Papua New Guinea Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Updated: March 8, 2024

Papua New Guinea Visa

Visiting Papua New Guinea can be troublesome and dangerous with most of the world’s governments advising their citizens to reconsider travel. However, navigating the Papua New Guinea visa policy is not that difficult as many nationalities are eligible for an eVisa through the official government website.

PNG Visa on Arrival (VOA) facilities are also slowly being reintroduced.

Quick Summary:

  • PNG does not offer visa exemption, all visitors must obtain either an Easy Visitor Permit (eVisa), Visa on Arrival or a tourist visa online or from the embassy
  • eVisa is available to 96 nationalities, costs 50 USD and is approved in 1-4 days
  • VOA is available to 22 countries and territories, only obtainable at Jacksons Airport in Port Moresby and Wutung land border post
  • Tourist visas online or at the embassy are available to rest of the nationalities, the requirements are similar to an eVisa

In this article, you will learn about the requirements for PNG Visa on Arrival, eVisa, tourist visa from the embassy and the procedure for obtaining them.

Table of Contents

Visa policy and visa types.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) requires all incoming foreigners to have a visa before entering the country. No visa exemption is in place .

Visa on arrival is available to all Pacific Island Nations and territories and a select few other nationalities.

Evisas for PNG allow stays of either 30 days (for 26 countries) or 60 days (for 70 countries). The eVisa is formally called the Easy Visitor Permit .

All other nationalities must obtain a tourist visa either from a Papuan embassy or online.

Visa Requirements

Papua New Guinea Visa Requirements by Nationality

For the Easy Visitor Permit (eVisa), you are required to:

  • Provide a copy of your passport bio-data page. The passport must have at least 6 months validity on the date of arrival in Papua New Guinea.
  • Cover Letter
  • Evidence of Funds
  • Pay the US$50 fee

For the regular tourist visa (online), you must also submit:

  • A copy of your return/ongoing ticket.

If applying for a tourist visa at an embassy, they may request any number of other documents. Enquire in person for the precise list.

Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival (VOA) was suspended in March 2020 for all qualifying nationalities. It has since been renewed for ordinary passport holders only from these 22 countries or territories:

  • American Samoa (US Territory)
  • Cook Islands (New Zealand Territory)
  • French Polynesia (French Territory)
  • Guam (US Territory)
  • Marshall Islands
  • New Caledonia (French Territory)
  • Niue (New Zealand Territory)
  • Northern Mariana Islands (US Territory)
  • Solomon Islands
  • Tokelau (New Zealand Territory)
  • Wallis and Futuna (French Territory)

*Chinese tourists must be a part of an organized tour group to be eligible for a visa on arrival valid for 30 days.

Visa on arrival allows stays of up to 60 days. Travelers must show an onward ticket.

Visa on Arrival is available only at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby and Wutung land border post (aka Vanimo) between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

For more information, read the Papua New Guinea Visa on Arrival to learn about the documents required, fees and the procedure to obtain VOA at the airport.

eVisa (Easy Visitor Permit)

Papua New Guinea e-Visa Sample

The Easy Visitor Permit is the easiest way to travel to Papua New Guinea. It’s often referred to as Papua New Guinea eVisa.

The eVisa can be applied online on the official PNG eVisa website .

The Easy Visitor Permit is valid for 6 months from the issue date and allows stays for either 30 or 60 days. Some countries are eligible for both durations but since the cost and the requirements are the same, they are only included in the 60-day tier in the lists below.

Some countries are eligible for a Visa on Arrival but may still opt to get an Easy Visitor Permit beforehand, thus they are included in the lists.

It costs 50$ to apply for either duration. Processing time can vary. Some travelers get their eVisa within 24 hours, while others have to wait a few days.

Eligibility

30 days .

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • South Africa
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Vatican City

Required Documents

These are the required documents when applying for PNG eVisa:

  • Cover Letter (must include purpose of visit, places to visit, accommodation contact details)
  • Copy of Passport Bio page
  • Evidence of sufficient funds

For the cover letter, just a general idea of the plan is necessary: you do not need specific dates or a flight plan. Don’t book flights until you have the eVisa.

Allowed Ports of Entry

With an eVisa, you are allowed to enter Papua New Guinea only through the following border checkpoints:

  • Jackson’s International Airport, Port Moresby
  • Daru Island
  • Wutung (Vanimo)
  • Kagamuga Airport, Mt Hagen

For more information, read the Papua New Guinea e-Visa article for details on eligibility, photo requirements, visa fees and the application procedure.

eVisa (Tourist Visa Online)

Those not eligible for the Easy Visitor Permit can apply for a regular tourist visa online. The procedure and requirements of the Tourist Visa are quite similar to the Easy Visitor Permit. The only difference is that you must attach a return or onward ticket to your application for the tourist visa.

Tourist Visa from the Embassy

Papua New Guinea Visa Sample

An alternative to the online visa application is to apply at a Papuan embassy or High Commission.

The ICA website allows you to see the closest Papuan missions to your location by clicking “Find Nearest Office”.

Papua New Guinea missions may allow you to apply for a visa over the counter or via email.

The basic requirements are the same as for the eVisa, however, the embassy may request any number of additional documents. It’s best to ask your nearest embassy for details.

Visa Extension

Visa extensions are only given in limited situations. If allowed, a visa extension costs 150$ and requires a completed application form for entry permit extension .

For eligibility for visa extension, consult with Papuan Immigration .

Visa extensions are not permitted at all for the 30-day eVisa (Easy Visitor Permit).

Transit Visa

You don’t need a visa if you are staying within the airport’s transit zone for less than 8 hours.

Anything longer than that and you’ll need a regular visa as PNG does not issue transit visas.

A COVID-19 medical clearance certificate, also known as a COVID-19 health certificate or COVID-19 test result, is a document that confirms an individual's COVID-19 status based on a medical test. This certificate is often required for international travel or for entry into certain countries or venues during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Here are some key points to know about COVID-19 medical clearance certificates:

  • 1, Purpose: The certificate is intended to demonstrate that an individual has tested negative for COVID-19 or has met specific health criteria to be considered safe to travel or enter a specific location.
  • 2, Testing: The most common type of test used for COVID-19 clearance is the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. This test detects the presence of the virus's genetic material and is considered highly accurate. Other tests, such as antigen tests or antibody tests, may be accepted in certain situations or locations.
  • 3, Timing: The timing of the test is crucial. Most countries and travel destinations require the test to be conducted within a specific time frame before departure or arrival. The time window can vary, but it is typically within 72 to 96 hours before travel.
  • 4, Validity: The validity of a COVID-19 medical clearance certificate is often limited, usually ranging from 48 to 96 hours from the time the test was taken. It's essential to check the specific requirements of the destination or airline to ensure compliance.
  • 5, Certification and Documentation: The certificate should be issued by a recognized and authorized medical facility or laboratory. It typically includes the individual's name, date of birth, test date, type of test conducted, and the result (negative/positive). Some certificates may include additional information, such as the laboratory's details or a unique identification number.
  • 6, Requirements and Regulations: COVID-19 clearance requirements and regulations can vary between countries and even within different regions of the same country. It's crucial to stay updated on the specific requirements of your destination by checking official government websites or consulting with your airline or travel agent.
  • 7, Additional Measures: It's important to note that a COVID-19 medical clearance certificate does not exempt individuals from following other health and safety measures, such as wearing masks, practicing physical distancing, or complying with quarantine or testing protocols upon arrival at their destination.

Always refer to the official guidelines and requirements provided by relevant authorities, such as government health departments or immigration agencies, to ensure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 medical clearance certificates for your specific travel needs.

Hi there. It says on the website that one of the documents required is a covid medical clearance certificate. Did anyone apply for a visa recently? Are they still asking for that or a proof of vaccination is enough?

23 replies to this topic

' class=

you need the following additional documents - hi quality photos are accepted

Copy of Passport Bio page

Corona Virus Medical Clearance Certificate - NHS vaccination certificate

Cover Letter - (purpose, visit site, accommand contact details)

Evidence Of Funds - recent bank statement (redacted for privacy and security is OK)

Complete Corona Virus Supplementary Heath Form - download from their website, print and fill out

"Corona Virus Medical Clearance Certificate - NHS vaccination certificate"

Oh so, the medical clearance is not in fact clearance from a doctor that I don't have any symptoms?

Have you applied for a visa recently or now someone that had, and they accepted just the vaccination cert.?

Thank you very much for your answer and apologies for further questions, I'm just trying to do it right when I apply for a visa!

yes the medical clearence certificate is just your vaccination schedule - we have applied for and got e-visa using our NHS certificates

Thats great news!

I'm gonna bother you with another question: how do I go about the cover letter? We gonna be traveling around the country for a month with no fixed itinerary. Do we need to find a png citizen to write a letter or?

dont worry so much, just say you want to visit as a tourists and list the places you plan to go

Oh ok. Simpler than I though :D. Will do that! Once again thanks for your help!

' class=

Have not been vaccinated but have certified proof of having long-term antibodies after recovering from Covid-19. Will this satisfy the visa?

you have to try and see - it is a medical clearence cert they need not specifically a vax cert so it could work

' class=

A question on the covid certificate, PNG have lifted all Covid restrictions on 6th October 2022, including the need to be vaccinated, has anyone applied for a visa without being vaccinated, was it granted?

Thanks in advance!

Had no trouble entering PNG without proof of vaccination. I did provide a statement from my pharmacy stating I had the long term antibodies after having had Covid

A Sample Cover Letter for Tourist Visa and How to Create One

a sample cover letter

If you're planning to  travel abroad , in many cases you will need to obtain a visa beforehand. The requirements vary according to your country of origin and your destination. But for a lot of people, the process to be granted a visa can seem daunting and unclear. In this article, we share important tips about visas to equip you with the knowledge to prepare for your international trip. Read on to find out more about how tourist visas work, including a very useful sample cover letter for your tourist visa application.

What Exactly Is a Tourist Visa?

A tourist visa or visitor visa is an official document that allows you to get in another country. In general, you are likely to need one every time you visit another country. However, this depends on which country you are from and where you are going, as some countries have agreements that allow entrance even without it.

A tourist visa may take different forms: it can be a paper document, although it most often comes as a simple stamp in your passport . Some countries require you to arrange your visa before arriving in the country, while others issue it to you once you land at the airport.

A tourist visa indicates how long you are allowed to stay in the country. It also defines which activities you are allowed to participate in or not while there, such as working and studying.

Other Types of Visas

how long is a passport good for

A tourist visa is the most common and most acquired type of visa. It is usually only valid for a short period of time, commonly ranging from a few weeks to a couple of months.

This is what you will need if you are just planning to visit the country. A tourist visa however doesn't allow you to work and study while you are in a particular country.

Others types of visas include student visas, business visas, media visas, fiancé visas , and many others depending on the place you're travelling to.

Resident visas are also available for those who want to live in a particular country. You will normally need a valid reason to obtain this type of visa, as they tend to be the most difficult to get.

What You Need to Apply for a Tourist Visa

As mentioned above, tourist visa requirements vary with your nationality and your destination, as well as where you make your application. You should always check the instructions application to your specific situation on the relevant embassy or consulate website. Having said that, there are some general requirements and common documents that are needed for most tourist visa applications.

These include:

  • Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended period of stay
  • Duly filled out visa application forms
  • Confirmed round-trip tickets
  • Cover letter for tourist visa or letter to the consulate

Top tip: travel insurance for your visa application

Most tourist visa applications require you to show proof of travel insurance coverage for the duration of your trip. We use and recommend SafetyWing as our preferred travel medical insurance provider. It's the most flexible and affordable we've found, starting at just $1.32 per day. They can also provide a visa letter to support your application. If you're looking for more comprehensive coverage, World Nomads is also a reliable and very popular alternative among global travelers. Note: In our experience and to the best of our knowledge, these two travel insurance options fulfill the requirements for most tourist visa applications. However, please make sure to check that they meet the specific criteria applicable to your individual case.

The cover letter or letter to the consulate is necessary for tourist visas that require interviews. This letter needs to explain why you want to visit the country and where you will be staying in the country. It must also outline the intended dates and duration of your stay.

Moreover, this letter is your way to tell the embassy if you are getting a sponsorship from a friend, parents, or a romantic partner who are currently based in that country. It's important to take your time to write your cover letter, although you should also make sure to keep it to-the-point and not too long.

If the trip is going to be  sponsored by someone else , make sure to include the following details in the cover letter for your tourist visa application:

  • The name of the person who is going to sponsor your trip
  • The job or source of income of the person who is going to sponsor you
  • Your proof or relationship (normally pictures)
  • Proof of financial capability of your sponsor
  • The expenses your sponsor will cover

The cover letter is a really important document to provide before your trip. It states every important thing you want to tell the embassy or consulate. Make sure that it mentions and explains every document you've submitted.

To give you a better insight into how to create a cover letter for your visa application, here is a sample cover letter for a tourist visa needed to enter a country:
