Job Summary
We are seeking to appoint four Clinical Research Fellow/Resident Medical Officers who will be involved in a major research project under the direction of a member of academic staff at Imperial College. The post holder will be expected to partake in a clinical RMO role with an on call commitment of 1 in 6 which has a prospective cover, looking after patients within an Imperial private healthcare facility.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with an interest in the following specialities:
Oncology, Women’s Oncology, Vascular, Haematology, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic, General Surgery, Urology, General Medicine, Endocrine, Anaesthetics, Orthopaedics, Neurology, HpB, Respiratory. You must be able to demonstrate some previous experience in research and must show evidence of ability to develop personal research projects.
During the course of the appointment the Clinical Research Fellow will undertake studies leading to a higher research degree. The appointee’s research work may take place in a Department other than the Division of Surgery. Clinical work will be undertaken to provide on-call/cover clinics only at the direction of the trust and as set out within the contract. The appointee cannot do any clinical work outside the employing organisation.
Duties and responsibilities
- You will be required to undertake a leading role in a major research project. The research project will entail project design, experimental work in addition to data analysis and reporting the results in peer-reviewed journals. Research projects will be in one of the Divisional themes including various surgical and cancer specialties, and safety and quality.
- You will provide a 1-in-6 which has a prospective cover on-site medical cover to a nominated private patient unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, including working hours and antisocial hours as required.
- The RMOs are expected to be readily available to attend the ward, hence during their shifts are not to routinely assist in theatre unless a case is a clinical emergency.
- The RMOs are expected to meet regularly with the clinical lead for their site to discuss any issues.
Essential requirements
- A degree in medicine (MBBS or equivalent) and full MRCS in surgery or MRCP in medicine equivalent is desirable, as is full General Medical Council registration and advanced Life Support training completed within six months prior to appointment.
- A completion of Foundation Year training is recured along with experience in acute hospital setting and experience in research.

Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Fellow in the Ataxia Centre, UCL/UCLH Department of Neuroscience and Neurogenetics, UCL Institute of Neurology, under the supervision of Prof Paola Giunti. The post offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience of translational research as part of an internationally recognised multi-disciplinary team
Main duties of the job
The postholder will be an essential member of the research team at the Ataxia Centre, providing clinical and research input into the Centre's research programme into Ataxia and will work closely with the Principal Investigators (PIs), Clinical Research Fellows and Clinical Trials nurses. Their primary role will be as sub-investigator in clinical drug trial: A phase 1/2a, open-label trial to investigate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of multiple ascending doses of intrathecally administered VO659 in participants with spinocerebellar ataxia types 1, 3. assessing the safety of this novel Antisense oligonucleotide(ASO) treatment in patients with these rare diseases. He/she will also have the opportunity to participate in current basic and observational research including longitudinal studies of dominant and recessive ataxias and at-risk groups and healthy volunteers to identify reliable biomarkers of disease and develop new therapeutic targets. The postholder will gain extensive experience in the set up and execution of clinical trials and laboratory based / translational research. They will also be involved in the clinical activity of the Ataxia clinics and the multidisciplinary meeting.

Job responsibilities.
Applicants should have a medical degree and full GMC Registration, and have previous experience in neurology, or general medicine and excellent skill in performing lumbar puncture. The successful candidate will have good inter-personal skills, the ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting and the ability to demonstrate a record of academic clinical excellence.

Knowledge and qualifications.
- Educated to degree level (Medical Doctor)
- Full GMC registration MRCP, or equivalent
- Experience in neurology, psychiatry or general medicine
- Proven knowledge of GCP guidelines
- Completed/working towards degree in the speciality or related field

- Previous experience in audit and evaluation
- Experience of phlebotomy, cannulation, and management of central lines,

- Experience of formal/informal teaching of patients and staff
- Experience in performing skin biopsies
- Clinical research experience/ understanding of research methodology
