CSE is the number four citation style with numbers

CSE (Council of Science Editors) style is is the standard format used in the physical and life sciences. This style features three types of citation systems: citation-sequence, name-year, and citation-name.

• Name-Year : In-text citations of this type feature the author’s last name and the year of publication in brackets. A bibliography at the end lists all references in full.

• Citation-Sequence : Every source is assigned a superscript number that is used as an in-text reference. The bibliography at the end lists all numbers with their references in the order in which they appeared in the text.

• Citation-Name : The reference list is organized alphabetically by authors’ last names; each name is assigned a number which can be placed in superscript as an in-text reference.

A numbered, or numeric, citation style uses superscripted numbers or numbers in brackets for in-text citations. The numbers correspond to a reference list at the end of the paper that features full bibliographic citations for each source.

A numeric style is not necessarily better or worse than an author-date style. The decision to use either one will depend on the topic you’re writing about, the field you’re studying, or your instructor’s preferences for the assignment.

When writing a paper for a research project, you may need to cite a research paper you used as a reference. The basic information included in your citation will be the same across all styles. However, the format in which that information is presented is somewhat different depending on whether you're using American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA), Chicago, or American Medical Association (AMA) style.

  • In APA style, cite the paper: Last Name, First Initial. (Year). Title. Publisher.

APA is used when citing sources for academic articles such as journals, and is intended to help readers better comprehend content, and to avoid language bias wherever possible. The APA style (or APA format ) is now in its 7th edition, and provides citation style guides for virtually any type of resource.

Chicago Style Citation Examples

The Chicago/Turabian style of citing sources is generally used when citing sources for humanities papers, and is best known for its requirement that writers place bibliographic citations at the bottom of a page (in Chicago-format footnotes ) or at the end of a paper (endnotes).

The Turabian and Chicago citation styles are almost identical, but the Turabian style is geared towards student published papers such as theses and dissertations, while the Chicago style provides guidelines for all types of publications. This is why you’ll commonly see Chicago style and Turabian style presented together. The Chicago Manual of Style is currently in its 17th edition, and Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations is in its 8th edition.

The world of citations may seem cut and dry, but there’s more to them than just specific capitalization rules, MLA in-text citations , and other formatting specifications. Citations have been helping researches document their sources for hundreds of years, and are a great way to learn more about a particular subject area.

Ever wonder what sets all the different styles apart, or how they came to be in the first place? Read on for some interesting facts about citations!

1. There are Over 7,000 Different Citation Styles

You may be familiar with MLA and APA citation styles, but there are actually thousands of citation styles used for all different academic disciplines all across the world. Deciding which one to use can be difficult, so be sure to ask you instructor which one you should be using for your next paper.

2. Some Citation Styles are Named After People

While a majority of citation styles are named for the specific organizations that publish them (i.e. APA is published by the American Psychological Association, and MLA format is named for the Modern Language Association), some are actually named after individuals. The most well-known example of this is perhaps Turabian style, named for Kate L. Turabian, an American educator and writer. She developed this style as a condensed version of the Chicago Manual of Style in order to present a more concise set of rules to students.

3. There are Some Really Specific and Uniquely Named Citation Styles

How specific can citation styles get? The answer is very. For example, the “Flavour and Fragrance Journal” style is based on a bimonthly, peer-reviewed scientific journal published since 1985 by John Wiley & Sons. It publishes original research articles, reviews and special reports on all aspects of flavor and fragrance. Another example is “Nordic Pulp and Paper Research,” a style used by an international scientific magazine covering science and technology for the areas of wood or bio-mass constituents.

By citing their sources regularly and accurately, students can easily avoid the trap of plagiarism , and promote further research on their topic.

They Create Better Researchers

By researching sources to back up and promote their ideas, students are becoming better researchers without even knowing it! Each time a new source is read or researched, the student is becoming more engaged with the project and is developing a deeper understanding of the subject area. Proper citations demonstrate a breadth of the student’s reading and dedication to the project itself. By creating citations, students are compelled to make connections between their sources and discern research patterns. Each time they complete this process, they are helping themselves become better researchers and writers overall.

When is the Right Time to Start Making Citations?

Make in-text/parenthetical citations as you need them.

As you are writing your paper, be sure to include references within the text that correspond with references in a works cited or bibliography. These are usually called in-text citations or parenthetical citations in MLA and APA formats. The most effective time to complete these is directly after you have made your reference to another source. For instance, after writing the line from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities : “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…,” you would include a citation like this (depending on your chosen citation style):

(Dickens 11).

This signals to the reader that you have referenced an outside source. What’s great about this system is that the in-text citations serve as a natural list for all of the citations you have made in your paper, which will make completing the works cited page a whole lot easier. After you are done writing, all that will be left for you to do is scan your paper for these references, and then build a works cited page that includes a citation for each one.

But before you run to the library and grab the first 20 books you can lay your hands on, keep in mind that selecting a source to include in your paper should not be taken lightly. Before you proceed with using it to backup your ideas, run a quick Internet search for it and see if other scholars in your field have written about it as well. Generally, the number system is favored in fields where you typically report experimental field or lab work. Technical fields such as materials science, aerospace engineering, and chemistry tend to favor the number system.

When you use the number system, your responsibility is to indicate in your text—either in parentheses or brackets—a number that corresponds to a source on your references page. The first source you cite in your text receives the number 1, the second number 2, and so on. If you repeat a reference to a source later in the text, it retains its original number—thus, all references to source number 4 receive a 4 after them in parentheses or brackets. You delay the appropriate punctuation until after the parentheses or brackets:

If the load on the thrust bearing can be decreased by some means, the life of the turbodrill can be significantly increased (1).

Many authors prefer to identify the source at the beginning of the reference, perhaps including the author’s name directly in the text:

Gould et al. (5) found a clear relation between. . .

The number system is especially handy for citing equations, because you can simply insert the citation number logically as you introduce the equation to avoid confusion with any other numbers:

The line’s slope is used in the following equation (7) to calculate. . .

Other In-Text Citation Practices

Slight but important mechanical differences exist among in-text citation practices, in particular when you are trying to conform to a specific style, such as MLA (Modern Language Association) or APA (American Psychological Association). For example, MLA style requires you to provide the page number of your citation in-text, but not the year, while APA style asks you to place a comma between author and year. Please feel welcome to explore all of these nuances for yourself if you wish, and recognize that some professors will insist that you conform to a particular style. When professors do not dictate a particular style, they will usually simply expect you to use the author-year or number system with consistency throughout the paper.

Remember, too, that journals within you field have already made informed decisions about which in-text citation practices they use. To settle on citation particulars, many writers model a journal in their field—mandatory, of course, if you submit material to a journal hoping for publication.

Research paper citation refers to the act of acknowledging and referencing a previously published work in a scholarly or academic paper . When citing sources, researchers provide information that allows readers to locate the original source, validate the claims or arguments made in the paper, and give credit to the original author(s) for their work.

The citation may include the author’s name, title of the publication, year of publication, publisher, and other relevant details that allow readers to trace the source of the information. Proper citation is a crucial component of academic writing, as it helps to ensure accuracy, credibility, and transparency in research.

How to Cite Research Paper

There are several formats that are used to cite a research paper. Follow the guide for the Citation of a Research Paper:

Purpose of Research Paper Citation

The purpose of citing sources in a research paper is to give credit to the original authors and acknowledge their contribution to your work. By citing sources, you are also demonstrating the validity and reliability of your research by showing that you have consulted credible and authoritative sources. Citations help readers to locate the original sources that you have referenced and to verify the accuracy and credibility of your research. Additionally, citing sources is important for avoiding plagiarism, which is the act of presenting someone else’s work as your own. Proper citation also shows that you have conducted a thorough literature review and have used the existing research to inform your own work. Overall, citing sources is an essential aspect of academic writing and is necessary for building credibility, demonstrating research skills, and avoiding plagiarism.

Advantages of Research Paper Citation

There are several advantages of research paper citation, including:

  • Giving credit: By citing the works of other researchers in your field, you are acknowledging their contribution and giving credit where it is due.
  • Strengthening your argument: Citing relevant and reliable sources in your research paper can strengthen your argument and increase its credibility. It shows that you have done your due diligence and considered various perspectives before drawing your conclusions.

About Citation Analysis

What is Citation Analysis?

The process whereby the impact or "quality" of an article is assessed by counting the number of times other authors mention it in their work.

Citation analysis invovles counting the number of times an article is cited by other works to measure the impact of a publicaton or author.  The caviat however, there is no single citation analysis tools that collects all publications and their cited references.  For a thorough analysis of the impact of an author or a publication, one needs to look in multiple databases to find all possible cited references. A number of resources are available at UIC  that identify cited works including: Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and other databases with limited citation data.

Citation Analysis - Why use it?

To find out how much impact a particular article or author has had, by showing which other authors cited the work within their own papers.  The H-Index is one specific method utilizing citation analysis to determine an individuals impact.

Web of Science

Web of Science provides citation counts for articles indexed within it.  It i ndexes over 10,000 journals in the arts, humanities,  sciences, and social sciences.

  • Enter the name of the author in the top search box (e.g. Smith JT).  
  • Select Author from the drop-down menu on the right.
  • To ensure accuracy for popular names, enter Univ Illinois in the middle search box, then select “Address” from the field drop down menu on the right.  (You might have to add the second search box by clicking "add another field" before you enter the address)
  • Click on Search
  • a list of publications by that author name will appear.   To the right of each citation, the number of times the article has been cited will appear.   Click the number next to "times cited" to view the articles that have cited your article

Scopus provide citation counts for articles indexed within it (limited to article written in 1996 and after).   It indexes o ver 15,000 journals from over 4,000 international publishers across the disciplines.

  • Once in Scopus, click on the Author search tab.
  • Enter the name of the author in the search box.  If you are using initials for the first and/or middle name, be sure to enter periods after the initials (e.g. Smith J.T.). 
  • To ensure accuracy if it is a popular name, you may enter University of Illinois in the affiliation field.  
  • If more than one profile appears, click on your profile (or the profile of the person you are examining). 
  • Once you click on the author's profile, a list of the publications will appear and to the right of each ctation, the number of times the article has been cited will appear.

Google Scholar provides citation counts for articles found within Google Scholar.  Depending on the discipline and cited article, it may find more cited references than Web of Science or Scopus because overall, Google Scholar is indexing more journals and more publication types than other databases. Google Scholar is not specific about what is included in its tool but information is available on how Google obtains its content .   Limiting searches to only publications by a specific author name is complicated in Google Scholar.  Using Google Scholar Citations and creating your own profile will make it easy for you to create a list of publications included in Google Scholar.   Using your Google Scholar Citations account, you can see the citation counts for your publications and have GS calculate your h-index.  (You can also search Google Scholar by author name and the title of an article to retrieve citation information for a specific article.)

  • Using your google (gmail) account, create a profile of all your articles captured in Google Scholar.  Follow the prompt on the scrren to set up your profile.   Once complete, this will show all the times the articles have been cited by other documents in Google Scholar and your h-index will be provided.  Its your choice whether you make your profile public or private but if you make it public, you can link to it from your own webpages.

Try Harzing's Publish or Perish Tool in order to more selectively examine published works by a specific author.

About the H-index

The h-index is an index to quantify an individual’s scientific research output ( J.E. Hirsch )   The h-index is an index that attempts to measure both the scientific productivity and the apparent scientific impact of a scientist. The index is based on the set of the researcher's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other people's publications ( Wikipedia )  A scientist has index h if h of [his/her] Np papers have at least h citations each, and the other (Np − h) papers have at most h citations each.

Below are instructions for obtaining your h-index from Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar.

Web of Science provides citation counts for articles indexed within it.  It indexes over 12,000 journals in the arts, humanities,  sciences, and social sciences.  To find an author's h-index in WOS:

  • To ensure accuracy for popular names, add an additional search box and enter "Univ Illinois" and then select “Address” from the field drop down menu on the right.
  • Click on Citation Report on the right hand corner of the results page.  The H-index is on the right of the screen.
  • If more than one profile appears, click on your profile (or the profile of the person you are examining).  Under the Research section, you will see the h-index listed.
  • If you have worked at more than one place, your name may appear twice with 2 separate h-index ratings.  Select the check box next to each relevent profile, and click show documents.

  Google Scholar

  • Using your google (gmail) account, create a profile of all your articles captured in Google Scholar.  Follow the prompt on the screen to set up your profile.   Once complete, this will show all the times the articles have been cited by other documents in Google Scholar and your h-index will be provided.  Its your choice whether you make your profile public or private but if you make it public, you can link to it from your own webpages.

Create a reference list

List the works cited, with corresponding numbers, on a new page after the text, titled References . Although the sample list below is not arranged alphabetically, you should arrange your reference list in alphabetical order.

Check James D. Lester, Writing Research Papers, 5th ed., pp. 231-237 (available in the Writing Center) or the documentation manual for your field for arrangement and numbering of the list and for style and order of elements within each entry.

Create in-text citations

When using numbered references, cite a source by using the number assigned to that source in the reference list.

Use the information below for guidelines on how to cite numbered references correctly in your text.

Number your citations

Depending upon the system used in your field, either:

  • Arrange the sources you cite alphabetically and then number them; or
  • Number the citations consecutively according to the first mention of each source in the text (using the same number for subsequent references to the same source).

Format your citations

  • Place the number in parentheses or in square brackets; or
  • Use a superscript (a number above the text line, as for a footnote).

Include a page number

Add a comma and the page number(s) of the source.

The method was described in 1979 (2, p. 885).

[The citation indicates that the method was described on page 885 of reference number 2 (Israel et al.) on the reference list in the Writing Center handout about numbered references entitled “The Reference List.” Notice that the period for the sentence comes after the closing parenthesis.]

Make the citation part of your sentence

Place the number directly after the author’s name or mention of the work :

How do I Find Citations to a Journal Article?

More and more databases are tracking citations now. Check the database that you normally use to find articles for your research. If you have questions about whether a particular database includes citation counts, ask a librarian for help and we can help you determine if your favorite database has what you need.

Below are listed several databases that do include citation counts that you can use as examples. The first, the citation databases (science, social science, and humanities) are all included in the Web of Science and are a good starting point for all fields. Next come Google Scholar and SocIndex.

Web of Science

From the library's website ( http://www.sdstate.edu/library ), click Databases A-Z, and search for "Web of Science."

Select Cited Reference Search, and follow the on-screen tips and examples to complete your search.

Fill out as many fields as you feel necessary to find the article you want to find citations to.

From the list of results, you can see the number of times your article has been cited in the Web of Science, you can look at more information for a particular article, or you can choose several articles from the list.

If you click on View Record, you can see who has cited the article and create an alert that will send you an e-mail every time another citation to your articl is added to Web of Science.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar counts the number of times it finds citations to a particular article; however, there are some reasons to be cautious in using the Google Scholar citations. First, Google Scholar does not evaluate the publications it indexes in any way. Other indexes use some sort of criteria to determine what they index so there is some quality control within the index. Google scholar does have some criteria but they are not quality control type criteria. The number may not be an accurate reflection of the number of individual publications that cite your work either.

For instance, if an article cites your work and the citing article is written by 6 people. After a few months (assuming those 6 authors were researching using federal grants), the article can be put on their individual web pages so each of those 6 people put the article on their web page and the journal makes the article available in some way that Google finds it on the journal web site as well. Google Scholar will count 7 citations to your work even though only 1 article cited it.

With those caveats, Google will pick up citations that other indexes don't so it is a good index to use for citation counts if you are careful.

Go to http://google.scholar.com .

If you have a Google account, you can log into it and Google will make searching for your citations very easy.

Fill out your profile.

Choose the articles you have written from the list that is discoverd for authors with your name. (This is an instance where you should be grateful if your parents gave you an unusual name.)

Once you have chosen yourself as an author and added the articles Google identified as yours, you will be able to follow those articles.

Search Google Scholar for a particular article

You can search Google Scholar for a particular article as well. In the search box type the title of the article (you can use quotation marks around the title to make Google search it as a phrase but this is often unnecessary).

Find the article in the results list and the citations to it will be at the botom of the citation.

(Note that this is the same article as the example in the Web of Science instructions, WOS has 185 citations, Google lists 237. Once you have checked for unique citations, you can list both numbers.)

Articles Indexed in PubMed & NIH-funded Research

Relative Citation Ratio (RCR)  and Field Citation Ratio (FCR)   These metrics compare a given paper to others in the same research area or field. The papers need to be at least two years old.  Dimensions database : Search this app to find RCR and FCR   at https://app.dimensions.ai/discover/publication .

Find the Citation Count for a Publication

  • Access Web of Science  (sign in for off-campus use, if necessary)
  • Click on "Cited Reference Search" tab. 
  •   In the "Cited Work" box, enter the journal abbreviation for a specific journal title. Use the journal abbreviation list, linked below the search box (View abbreviation list), to find the correct abbreviation of the journal name you are searching. Example: enter SCAND J SOC WELFARE  for Scandinavian Journal of Social Welfare
  • Click on the "Search" button. Once the results are posted, click on "Select All" and then on "Finish Search."
  • The results number should indicate how many articles in Web of Science cited the journal. Please note : The citation count will only include the number of times the publication was cited by specific articles from the journals that Web of Science covers. Web of Science does not count citations from every journal published around the world, nor does it count citations from books, conference proceedings, dissertations/theses, patents, technical reports or other types of publications.  

Find the Correct Author in Web of Science

Searching for a specific author can be difficult, especially if the name is a common one. There are options for identifying authors by an assigned identification number so that you can be sure the research of a particular individual is correct, whether there is a change in the name, it is listed differently or incorrectly, or if the researcher changes institutions.

  • Jennifer Smith is a researcher from the School of Public Health, University of Michigan.
  • Performing an author search using this name in Web of Science results citations from many disciplines ranging from Renaissance Studies, Marine Biology, Chemistry and others. None of the disciplines listed in the list of results include Public Health. 
  • It may take several steps to narrow this list of results to the correct author and still some articles may be inadvertently be missed or incorrectly included.

While many researchers on campus have an  ORCID  identification number which can be used in Web of Science, not all faculty members or researchers in the U.S. are using their identification number. You may want to use the author search suggested from the video below for a complete search strategy.

Get a Citation Analysis Report for an Author (or any parameter you define)

The Citation Report feature displays bar charts for the number of items published each year, the number of citations each year, the counts for the average number of citations per item, the number of citations per year per publication, average number of citations per year per publication, and the H-index.

A Citation Report can be generated from any set of search results.

Eliminate Self-Citations From a Citation Count

  • Click the the Search banner again and choose the  Advanced Search link.  
  • Combine your cited reference search for this author but eliminate the articles written by this author as well as cited by this author by using the connector NOT. Use the numbers in the search history, available under Advanced Search to  do this. Using the above examples you would enter the following in the advanced search box: #1 NOT #2

Perform a Cited Reference Search

​This video demonstrates how to find the number of times an article or an author has been cited within Web of Science. Remember, only citations from the set of journals, books and conference proceedings within this database will be included in this citation count. This will likely be a smaller number of citations for an author or article compared with Google Scholar or Scopus because Web of Science covers a smaller number of works than these other databases and is very concerned about quality compared with quantity. 

Create a Citation Analysis Report for a Department or Research Center

The Citation Report feature displays bar charts for the number of items published each year and the number of citations each year, plus counts for the average number of citations per item, the number of citations per year per publication, average number of citations per year per publication, and the H-index.

Be Aware: The Citation Report only analyzes the correct citations to the unit's journal articles published in the journals covered by the Web of Science; variant-citations are not covered, nor can an analysis be done on the unit's books, conference papers, patents, other non-journal documents or on articles from journals not covered by the Web of Science.

  •   Access Web of Science  ( sign in for off campus use, if necessary)
  • If there is a small set of articles you want to analyze, do a search for each article, searching by either the words in the title or a combination search for first author plus words in the title.   Use the Advanced Search feature to "OR" the sets together to get one combined set that includes all the articles.  Display the combined results set and click on the "Create Citation Report" link at the top upper right of the list.
  • Do an author search for each individual in the unit. Select "Author Search" in the pull-down menu. Use the author name with first initial, then then click on the "Add Author Name Variant" button to enter the author's name with first and middle initials.     Example: smith j   or smith jr After entering the author's name, click on the "Select Research Domain" button and select one or more research domains. After selecting research domains, click on the "Select Organization" button to select one or more research organizations. Some authors work for more than one institution/unit during their career and some are appointed to more than one unit at a time.  Whether the citation researcher finds this to be a PRO or a CON depends on if s/he is trying to find everything the author wrote or just what was written for a specific university/unit. 
  • If you have multiple sets of answers, use the Advanced Search feature to "OR" the individual results sets together to get one combined set.  Once you have all the results in a single set of references, click on the "Create Citation Report" link at the top upper right of the list.  

Find an Author's Most Highly Cited Papers

There are two methods for determining the most highly cited papers by an author: 

  •   Access Web of Science   (sign in for off campus use, if necessary)
  •   Use the "Basic Search" feature to find all the articles by an author. Recommended search: Use the author name with first initial, then add "OR author's name with first and middle initials". Example: smith j   or smith jr
  •   On the results page, change the “Sort by” box to (upper right of the list) to “Times Cited-Highest to Lowest”; the articles that then appear at the top of the list are the author’s most cited.
  • Be aware: Although easy to do, this method does not account for variant-citations and only includes the author’s articles from the journals covered by the Web of Science.  
  • Follow steps 1-5 above , finding all the correct citations and variant-citations for each of the author’s papers.  
  • Use whatever method you find most comfortable (paper, index/flash cards, word processor, spreadsheet, etc.) to keep track of the counts for each paper and when finished, sort the papers by the “times cited” count. 

Find the Most Highly Cited Papers for a Journal

This method can only be used for journals covered by the Web of Science; variant citations are not included in the citation determination.

  • Access Web of Science (sign in for off campus use, if necessary)  
  • Select "Basic Search." Enter the journal name (use the journal’s full name) and select "Publication Name" in the pull-down menu. Click "Search."    
  •   On the results page, change the "Sort by" box (upper right of the list) to "Times Cited-Highest to Lowest";  the articles that then appear at the top of the list are the journal's most cited.

Create a Citation Alert for a Journal Article

To be notified whenever an article of interest is cited, use the "Citation Alert" feature.   This feature is only available for articles that appeared in a journal covered by the Web of Science.

  • Access Web of Science (sign in for off campus use, if necessary)
  • Login to your personal account using the "Sign In" link at the top of the page. Citation Alerts require registration (free); to register, click on the "Sign In" link at the top of the page, in the left column, click on the "Register" link and follow instructions.
  • Use the "Search feature" to find the article. 
  •   On the results list, click on the item's title to display the full record.
  • In the right-hand column, click on the "Create Citation Alert" button. Alerts are automatically set for one year.
  • To remove an alert, click on the "My Citation Alerts" link at the top of the page; when your alerts are displayed, click on the "Modify Settings" button and mark which articles you wish to remove from your alerts.

13.1 Formatting a Research Paper

Learning objectives.

  • Identify the major components of a research paper written using American Psychological Association (APA) style.
  • Apply general APA style and formatting conventions in a research paper.

In this chapter, you will learn how to use APA style , the documentation and formatting style followed by the American Psychological Association, as well as MLA style , from the Modern Language Association. There are a few major formatting styles used in academic texts, including AMA, Chicago, and Turabian:

  • AMA (American Medical Association) for medicine, health, and biological sciences
  • APA (American Psychological Association) for education, psychology, and the social sciences
  • Chicago—a common style used in everyday publications like magazines, newspapers, and books
  • MLA (Modern Language Association) for English, literature, arts, and humanities
  • Turabian—another common style designed for its universal application across all subjects and disciplines

While all the formatting and citation styles have their own use and applications, in this chapter we focus our attention on the two styles you are most likely to use in your academic studies: APA and MLA.

If you find that the rules of proper source documentation are difficult to keep straight, you are not alone. Writing a good research paper is, in and of itself, a major intellectual challenge. Having to follow detailed citation and formatting guidelines as well may seem like just one more task to add to an already-too-long list of requirements.

Following these guidelines, however, serves several important purposes. First, it signals to your readers that your paper should be taken seriously as a student’s contribution to a given academic or professional field; it is the literary equivalent of wearing a tailored suit to a job interview. Second, it shows that you respect other people’s work enough to give them proper credit for it. Finally, it helps your reader find additional materials if he or she wishes to learn more about your topic.

Furthermore, producing a letter-perfect APA-style paper need not be burdensome. Yes, it requires careful attention to detail. However, you can simplify the process if you keep these broad guidelines in mind:

  • Work ahead whenever you can. Chapter 11 “Writing from Research: What Will I Learn?” includes tips for keeping track of your sources early in the research process, which will save time later on.
  • Get it right the first time. Apply APA guidelines as you write, so you will not have much to correct during the editing stage. Again, putting in a little extra time early on can save time later.
  • Use the resources available to you. In addition to the guidelines provided in this chapter, you may wish to consult the APA website at http://www.apa.org or the Purdue University Online Writing lab at http://owl.english.purdue.edu , which regularly updates its online style guidelines.

General Formatting Guidelines

This chapter provides detailed guidelines for using the citation and formatting conventions developed by the American Psychological Association, or APA. Writers in disciplines as diverse as astrophysics, biology, psychology, and education follow APA style. The major components of a paper written in APA style are listed in the following box.

These are the major components of an APA-style paper:

Body, which includes the following:

  • Headings and, if necessary, subheadings to organize the content
  • In-text citations of research sources
  • References page

All these components must be saved in one document, not as separate documents.

The title page of your paper includes the following information:

  • Title of the paper
  • Author’s name
  • Name of the institution with which the author is affiliated
  • Header at the top of the page with the paper title (in capital letters) and the page number (If the title is lengthy, you may use a shortened form of it in the header.)

List the first three elements in the order given in the previous list, centered about one third of the way down from the top of the page. Use the headers and footers tool of your word-processing program to add the header, with the title text at the left and the page number in the upper-right corner. Your title page should look like the following example.

The next page of your paper provides an abstract , or brief summary of your findings. An abstract does not need to be provided in every paper, but an abstract should be used in papers that include a hypothesis. A good abstract is concise—about one hundred fifty to two hundred fifty words—and is written in an objective, impersonal style. Your writing voice will not be as apparent here as in the body of your paper. When writing the abstract, take a just-the-facts approach, and summarize your research question and your findings in a few sentences.

In Chapter 12 “Writing a Research Paper” , you read a paper written by a student named Jorge, who researched the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets. Read Jorge’s abstract. Note how it sums up the major ideas in his paper without going into excessive detail.

Beyond the Hype: Abstract

Write an abstract summarizing your paper. Briefly introduce the topic, state your findings, and sum up what conclusions you can draw from your research. Use the word count feature of your word-processing program to make sure your abstract does not exceed one hundred fifty words.

Depending on your field of study, you may sometimes write research papers that present extensive primary research, such as your own experiment or survey. In your abstract, summarize your research question and your findings, and briefly indicate how your study relates to prior research in the field.

Margins, Pagination, and Headings

APA style requirements also address specific formatting concerns, such as margins, pagination, and heading styles, within the body of the paper. Review the following APA guidelines.

Use these general guidelines to format the paper:

  • Set the top, bottom, and side margins of your paper at 1 inch.
  • Use double-spaced text throughout your paper.
  • Use a standard font, such as Times New Roman or Arial, in a legible size (10- to 12-point).
  • Use continuous pagination throughout the paper, including the title page and the references section. Page numbers appear flush right within your header.
  • Section headings and subsection headings within the body of your paper use different types of formatting depending on the level of information you are presenting. Additional details from Jorge’s paper are provided.

Cover Page

Begin formatting the final draft of your paper according to APA guidelines. You may work with an existing document or set up a new document if you choose. Include the following:

  • Your title page
  • The abstract you created in Note 13.8 “Exercise 1”
  • Correct headers and page numbers for your title page and abstract

APA style uses section headings to organize information, making it easy for the reader to follow the writer’s train of thought and to know immediately what major topics are covered. Depending on the length and complexity of the paper, its major sections may also be divided into subsections, sub-subsections, and so on. These smaller sections, in turn, use different heading styles to indicate different levels of information. In essence, you are using headings to create a hierarchy of information.

The following heading styles used in APA formatting are listed in order of greatest to least importance:

  • Section headings use centered, boldface type. Headings use title case, with important words in the heading capitalized.
  • Subsection headings use left-aligned, boldface type. Headings use title case.
  • The third level uses left-aligned, indented, boldface type. Headings use a capital letter only for the first word, and they end in a period.
  • The fourth level follows the same style used for the previous level, but the headings are boldfaced and italicized.
  • The fifth level follows the same style used for the previous level, but the headings are italicized and not boldfaced.

Visually, the hierarchy of information is organized as indicated in Table 13.1 “Section Headings” .

A college research paper may not use all the heading levels shown in Table 13.1 “Section Headings” , but you are likely to encounter them in academic journal articles that use APA style. For a brief paper, you may find that level 1 headings suffice. Longer or more complex papers may need level 2 headings or other lower-level headings to organize information clearly. Use your outline to craft your major section headings and determine whether any subtopics are substantial enough to require additional levels of headings.

Working with the document you developed in Note 13.11 “Exercise 2” , begin setting up the heading structure of the final draft of your research paper according to APA guidelines. Include your title and at least two to three major section headings, and follow the formatting guidelines provided above. If your major sections should be broken into subsections, add those headings as well. Use your outline to help you.

Citation Guidelines

In-text citations.

Throughout the body of your paper, include a citation whenever you quote or paraphrase material from your research sources. As you learned in Chapter 11 “Writing from Research: What Will I Learn?” , the purpose of citations is twofold: to give credit to others for their ideas and to allow your reader to follow up and learn more about the topic if desired. Your in-text citations provide basic information about your source; each source you cite will have a longer entry in the references section that provides more detailed information.

In-text citations must provide the name of the author or authors and the year the source was published. (When a given source does not list an individual author, you may provide the source title or the name of the organization that published the material instead.) When directly quoting a source, it is also required that you include the page number where the quote appears in your citation.

This information may be included within the sentence or in a parenthetical reference at the end of the sentence, as in these examples.

Epstein (2010) points out that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (p. 137).

Here, the writer names the source author when introducing the quote and provides the publication date in parentheses after the author’s name. The page number appears in parentheses after the closing quotation marks and before the period that ends the sentence.

Addiction researchers caution that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (Epstein, 2010, p. 137).

Here, the writer provides a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence that includes the author’s name, the year of publication, and the page number separated by commas. Again, the parenthetical citation is placed after the closing quotation marks and before the period at the end of the sentence.

As noted in the book Junk Food, Junk Science (Epstein, 2010, p. 137), “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive.”

Here, the writer chose to mention the source title in the sentence (an optional piece of information to include) and followed the title with a parenthetical citation. Note that the parenthetical citation is placed before the comma that signals the end of the introductory phrase.

David Epstein’s book Junk Food, Junk Science (2010) pointed out that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (p. 137).

Another variation is to introduce the author and the source title in your sentence and include the publication date and page number in parentheses within the sentence or at the end of the sentence. As long as you have included the essential information, you can choose the option that works best for that particular sentence and source.

Citing a book with a single author is usually a straightforward task. Of course, your research may require that you cite many other types of sources, such as books or articles with more than one author or sources with no individual author listed. You may also need to cite sources available in both print and online and nonprint sources, such as websites and personal interviews. Chapter 13 “APA and MLA Documentation and Formatting” , Section 13.2 “Citing and Referencing Techniques” and Section 13.3 “Creating a References Section” provide extensive guidelines for citing a variety of source types.

Writing at Work

APA is just one of several different styles with its own guidelines for documentation, formatting, and language usage. Depending on your field of interest, you may be exposed to additional styles, such as the following:

  • MLA style. Determined by the Modern Languages Association and used for papers in literature, languages, and other disciplines in the humanities.
  • Chicago style. Outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style and sometimes used for papers in the humanities and the sciences; many professional organizations use this style for publications as well.
  • Associated Press (AP) style. Used by professional journalists.

References List

The brief citations included in the body of your paper correspond to the more detailed citations provided at the end of the paper in the references section. In-text citations provide basic information—the author’s name, the publication date, and the page number if necessary—while the references section provides more extensive bibliographical information. Again, this information allows your reader to follow up on the sources you cited and do additional reading about the topic if desired.

The specific format of entries in the list of references varies slightly for different source types, but the entries generally include the following information:

  • The name(s) of the author(s) or institution that wrote the source
  • The year of publication and, where applicable, the exact date of publication
  • The full title of the source
  • For books, the city of publication
  • For articles or essays, the name of the periodical or book in which the article or essay appears
  • For magazine and journal articles, the volume number, issue number, and pages where the article appears
  • For sources on the web, the URL where the source is located

The references page is double spaced and lists entries in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. If an entry continues for more than one line, the second line and each subsequent line are indented five spaces. Review the following example. ( Chapter 13 “APA and MLA Documentation and Formatting” , Section 13.3 “Creating a References Section” provides extensive guidelines for formatting reference entries for different types of sources.)

In APA style, book and article titles are formatted in sentence case, not title case. Sentence case means that only the first word is capitalized, along with any proper nouns.

Introduction

There are a number of different databases available to determine how many times an article has been cited by other articles.

Both Scopus and Web of Science can be used to find this information. Google scholar can also provide this information.  Keep in mind the number of citations of each of these databases will be different because of the way they pull the citation information.

Below we will provide instructions on how to use the databases to gather this information

Find Number of Citations on Scopus

How to find the number of citations on scopus.

  • Go to the CSHL Library website.
  • From there you can click on Resources.
  • Then click on Databases & Protocols.
  • Then chose Scopus.
  • Type in the Search Documents bar what article you would like to find or some key words.
  • To the right is the Cited by column with a number, which represents the number of citations.  If the number is greater than 0 then you can click on it and it will give you the papers that cited the one you had searched.

How to find the number of citations on web of science.

  • Then chose Web of Science.
  • To the right of the article is the number of citations.  If you click on the article, to the right, there is an overview of the references.
  • If you click on the number, the papers that cited the article will be displayed.

Cited Reference Search

Search for records that have cited a published work, and discover how a known idea or innovation has been confirmed, applied, improved, extended, or corrected. Find out who’s citing your research and the impact your work is having on other researchers in the world.

In the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, you can use cited reference search to find articles that refer to or include an illustration of a work of art or a music score; these references are called implicit citations .

  • You may also search on Cited Year(s), Cited Volume, Cited Issue, Cited Pages, Cited Title, or Cited DOI
  • Click Search; results from the cited reference index that include the work you’re searching appears on a table. Every reference on the cited reference index has been cited by at least one article indexed in the Web of Science. The first author of a cited work always displays in the Cited Author column. If the cited author you specified in step 1 is not the primary author, then the name of author you specified follows the name of the first author (click Show all authors). If you retrieve too many hits, return to the cited reference search page and add criteria for Cited Year, Cited Volume, Cited Issue, or Cited Page.
  • cited reference is not a source article in the Web of Science
  • reference may contain incomplete or inaccurate information, and can’t be linked to a source article
  • reference may refer to a document from a publication outside the timespan of your subscription; for example, if the article was published in 1992, but your subscription only gives you access to 20 years of data
  • cited item may refer to a document from a publication not covered by a database in your subscription
  • Click Search to view your results.

Cited Reference Search Interface

Click View abbreviation list to see the abbreviations of journal and conference proceedings titles used as cited works; this list will open in a new browser tab.

When you complete a cited reference search, the number of citing items you retrieve may be smaller than the number listed in the Citing Articles column if your institution's subscription does not include all years of the database. In other words, the count in the Citing Articles column is not limited by your institution's subscription. However, your access to records in the product is limited by your institution's subscription.

  • Enter the name of the first author of a multi-authored article or book
  • Enter an abbreviated journal title followed by an asterisk or the first one or two significant words of a book title followed by an asterisk.
  • Try searching for the cited reference without entering a cited year in order to retrieve variations of the same cited reference. You can always return to the Cited Reference Search page and enter a cited year if you get too many references.
  • When searching for biblical references, enter Bible in the Cited Author field and the name of the book ( Corinthinans* , Matthew* Leviticus *, etc.) in the Cited Work field. Ensure that you use the asterisk (*) wildcard in your search.

Follow these steps to find articles that have cited Brown, M.E. and Calvin, W.M. Evidence for crystalline water and ammonia ices on Pluto's satellite Charon. Science . 287 (5450): 107-109. January 7, 2000:

  • On the Cited Reference Search page, enter Brown M* in the Cited Author field.
  • Enter Science* in the Cited Work field.
  • Click Search to go to the Cited Reference Search table. This page shows all the results from the Web of Science cited reference index that matched the query.
  • Page through the results to find this reference:

Cited Reference Search Example

  • Select the check box to the left of the reference.
  • Click the See Results button to go to the Cited Reference Search Results page to see the list of articles that cite the article by Brown and Calvin.

Every cited reference in the Cited Reference Index contains enough information to uniquely identify the document. Because only essential bibliographic information is captured, and because author names and source publication titles are unified as much as possible, the same reference cited in two different records should appear the same way in the database. This unification is what makes possible the Times Cited number on the Full Record page.

However, not all references to the same publication can be unified. As a consequence, a cited reference may have variations in the product.

For example, consider these variations of a reference to an article by A.J. Bard published in volume 374 of Nature:

The first reference contains the correct volume number and other bibliographic information. The View Record link takes you to the Full Record, which has a Times Cited count of 31.

The second reference contains a different volume number and it does not have a View Record link. Because a journal cannot have two different volume numbers in the same publication year, it is obvious that this is an incorrect reference to the same article.

Click Export at the top of the Cited Reference Search table to export the cited reference search results to Excel.

Articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded cite books, patents, and other types of publications in addition to other articles. You can do a cited reference search for a patent to find journal articles that have cited it.

If you know the patent number, enter it in the Cited Work field. If you do not know the patent number, try entering the name of the first listed inventor or patent assignee in the Cited Author field. For example, to find references to U.S. patent 4096196-A, enter 4096196 in the Cited Work field. If you also subscribe to Derwent Innovations Index and the patent is included in the Derwent database, the patents you find in the citation index will be linked to the corresponding full patent records in Derwent Innovations Index.

Self-citations refer to cited references that contain an author name that matches the name of the author of a citing article.

You may want to eliminate self-citations from the results of a Cited Reference Search by combining a Cited Reference Search with a search by the source author.

  • Perform a Cited Reference Search to find items that cite the works of a particular author. Ensure that you complete both steps of a Cited Reference Search.
  • Go to the search page. Enter the name of the same author in the Author field. Click the Search button.
  • Go to the advanced search page.
  • Combine the two searches you just completed in a Boolean NOT expression (for example, #1 NOT #2 ). The results of the Search (the items written by the author) should be the set on the right-hand side of the operator.

Articles indexed in the product cite books, patents, and other types of publications in addition to other articles. You can do a cited reference search on a book to find journal articles that have cited it.

You should identify a book by entering the name of the first listed author in the Cited Author field and the first word or words of the title in the Cited Work field. Many cited works are abbreviated. If you are not sure how a word has been spelled or abbreviated, enter the first few letters of the word, followed by an asterisk. For example, to search for records of articles that cite Edith Hamilton's book Mythology , you would enter Hamilton E* in the Cited Author field and Myth* in the Cited Work field.

Do not enter a year in the Cited Year field. Authors often cite a particular edition of a book, and the cited year is the year of the edition they are citing. Generally, you want to find all articles that cite a book, regardless of the particular edition cited.

For example, enter the following data on the Cited Reference Search page, and then click Search .

Finding How Many Times an Article Has Been Cited, and by Which Articles (aka Cited Reference Searching)

Several UMGC Library databases and other resources can be used to find how many times a particular article has been cited and to also find a list of the documents that have cited the article. These resources include:

Scroll down the page or use the links above to jump down the page to learn how to find citation information in these resources.

Scopus's most complete citation information is for documents published during or after 1970.

To use Scopus to find how many documents have cited a given article, enter information about the article into the database, as shown in the screen shot below. It's generally sufficient to enter just the first few words of an article's title -- which should be put between quotation marks so that the words will be searched for as a phrase -- into the search box and to then select the Article Title option from the field selection menu next to the search box. You may also want to click on the + icon next to the field selection menu to generate a new line with a new search box into which you can enter the first author's last name and then select the First Author option. (In this case, the article of interest is Robert M. Grant's 1996 article from Strategic Management Journal entitled "Toward a knowledge-based theory of the firm.")

The number in the "Cited by" column shows the number of times that the article has been cited by other documents that are indexed by Scopus. In this case, when the screen shot below was taken, it showed that Grant's article had been cited by 8,494 documents indexed by Scopus :

Emerald Insight

To use Emerald Insight to find how many documents have cited a given article, go to the Advanced Search page and enter information about the article into the database, as shown in the screen shot below. It's generally sufficient to enter just the first few words of an article's title -- which should be put between quotation marks so that the words will be searched for as a phrase -- into one search box, selecting Title from the field selection menu next to the search box. You may also want to click on the "Add Row" button to generate a new line with a new search box into which you can enter an author's last name -- which should also be put between quotation marks if the last name consists of two or more words -- and select Contributor from the field selection menu next to the search box. (In this case, the article of interest is Jeroen P. J. de Jong and Deanne N. Den Hartog's 2007 article from European Journal of Innovation Management entitled "How leaders influence employees' innovative behaviour.")

You will then be taken to a page that will show how much attention the article has received on sources such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. Click on the Dimensions citations tab to find how many publications cite the article.

Google Scholar

To use Google Scholar to find how many documents have cited a given article, enter information about the article into the search engine's search box, as shown in the screen shot below. It's generally sufficient to enter just the first few words of an article's title -- which should be put between quotation marks so that the words will be searched for as a phrase -- along with an author's last name. Google uses an implied AND, so there's no need to put AND between an article's title and an author's last name. (In this case, the article of interest is Sara L. Rynes, Barry Gerhart, and Kathleen A. Minette's 2004 article from Human Resource Management entitled "The importance of pay in employee motivation: Discrepancies between what people say and what they do .")

It's generally sufficient to enter just the first few words of an article's title -- which should be put between quotation marks so that the words will be searched for as a phrase -- into one search box, selecting the Document title - TI option from the field selection menu next to the search box. You may also want to enter an author's last name in another search box and select the Author - AU option from the field selection menu next to the search box. (In this case, the article of interest is Fariza H. Rusly, James L. Corner, and Peter Sun's 2012 article from Journal of Knowledge Management entitled "Positioning change readiness in knowledge management research.")

Certain EBSCO databases, including Business Source Complete and PsycINFO , provide citation information for articles. To use those databases to find how many documents have cited a given article, enter information about the article into the database, as shown in the screen shot below. It's generally sufficient to enter just the first few words of an article's title -- which should be put between quotation marks so that the words will be searched for as a phrase -- into one search box, selecting the TI Title option. You may also want to enter an author's last name in another search box and select the AU Author option. (In this case, the article of interest is Dan Wheatley's 2012 article from New Technology, Work & Employment entitled "Good to be home? Time-use and satisfaction levels among home-based teleworkers.")

How To Do In-Text Citations with Multiple Authors in APA Format

APA (or American Psychological Association) Style   was introduced in 1929 to establish a consistent style guide for scientific writing. It sought to make scientific works easier to read and understand. However, the style guidelines have expanded to include many disciplines, such as the humanities and health care.

The APA’s Publication Manual does not cover the general writing style rules in other editorial style guides, such as the MLA Handbook . APA Style seeks to create uniformity of common writing styles relevant to behavior and social sciences primarily.

Consistent formatting allows the reader to engage with the presented ideas rather than be distracted by the author’s personal formatting preferences. It also helps readers quickly review the document for references and sources to aid their research. Using APA Style keeps authors transparent by providing rules about citing their sources and giving credit for others’ ideas.

Best practices and common mistakes

APA Style allows writers to credit and cite other works appropriately and avoid plagiarism through in-text citations. APA Style uses the author–date citation system, which requires notations to be included within the document to reference ideas, paraphrases and quotations from other bodies of work. Each in-text citation within the paper (or chart, footnote or figure) briefly identifies the cited work and guides the reader to a longer list of cited sources at the end of the document, called the reference list.

In-text citations can be written within a paper parenthetically or narratively. Both include the same information: the author’s last name and the publication date.

  • Parenthetical citation : Great falls can be caused by sitting on tall walls (Dumpty, 1797).
  • Narrative citation : Dumpty (1797) claims that great falls can be caused by sitting on tall walls.
  • Reference list entry: Dumpty, Humpty (1797). Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall. Nursery Rhymes, 100.

APA Style requires citations to conform to a set of guidelines , which includes proper spelling of author names, consistency between the in-text citation information and its reference list entry and rules about crediting all facts and figures mentioned – especially those which are not common knowledge.

Understanding “et al.” usage in APA

Et al. is an abbreviation used to indicate multiple people. It’s the abbreviated version of “et alia,” a neutral plural version of “and others.” Most commonly, et al. indicates more than one contributor, such as multiple authors or editors, in a work.

In APA Style citations, et al. is used to indicate a cited work with three or more authors and serves as a way to condense the in-text citation to avoid confusion and unnecessary length. An APA in-text citation with three or more authors will include only the first author’s name plus “et al.” in every citation.

Citing multiple authors in APA Style is similar to MLA Style . For one or two authors, list the last name(s) followed by the year of publication. 

  • One author: (Beyonce, 1997)
  • Contributors: Daryl Hall and John Oates

To cite three or more authors using APA Style, use only the first author’s last name listed, plus “et al.” 

  • Contributors: Earth, Wind and Fire

When two separate sources have the same abbreviated et al. form , spell out as many last names as needed to distinguish the sources from each other. It may include two last names followed by et al.

Similarly, when the first authors of separate sources share the same last name but have different initials, use their first initials in the in-text citations.

In-text citation for various author types in APA

You may face a challenging situation where you must cite a group author , such as an institution or university, rather than a list of authors’ names. In this instance, you’ll list the group or organization.

  • Group author: (Furman University, 2020)

If the group also has an abbreviation to its name, you may note the first and subsequent citations differently to be as concise as possible.

  • Group author with abbreviation – 1st citation: (American Psychological Association [APA], 2024)
  • Group author with abbreviation – 2nd citation : (APA, 2024)

The most common mistake when citing sources is forgetting to cite a source. One way to ensure you include all required sources is to document and manage your sources as you use their ideas within the document. This may mean you create the citations as you conduct your research, create your outline or type the final paper.

Some applications exist to help you manage and document citations, including EasyBib , Mendeley , EndNote and Zotero . Depending on your writing style, these applications can help you create citations, save your research sources, annotate documents and format references. 

Regarding best practices for in-text citations in APA Style, it’s good practice to proofread your citations and reference list together. When citing multiple authors, ensure all spellings are accurate and consistent throughout the document and reference list. Refer to the APA Style Publication Manual and other guideline reference documents to confirm your citing within the latest citation guidelines.

Giving credit to other authors who have shaped your research and ideas is incredibly important. You can do so without risking plagiarism accusations through in-text citations that are marked and referenced. Not only does it provide you with an honest and accurate reputation, but it also helps your readers gain more valuable knowledge from other sources.

Citing sources should not discourage you from sharing your knowledge within academic writing. Sooner or later, you’ll become a pro at in-text citations in APA style! The more you write, the more familiar you’ll become with the guidelines; you’ll no longer need to reference the style guides for help.

Research department working papers, income and the card act’s ability-to-pay rule in the us credit card market.

The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act of 2009 prohibits US lenders from issuing loans that credit card borrowers lack the “ability to pay” (ATP). The act requires issuers to consider ATP when originating a credit card loan and when increasing the credit limit on a card. This paper investigates the impact of the rule on the credit card market. In particular, it studies whether ATP has affected card issuers’ practices involving credit limit increases. It conducts the analysis by studying the accounts of five large banks that collectively comprise about half of the US credit card market.

    When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, like, for example, (Jones, 1998). One complete reference for each source should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
