In Rudyard Kipling’s “How the Camel Got His Hump,” a lazy Camel resides in the desert, avoiding work and surviving on thorny vegetation. When prompted by other animals to contribute, he responds with a snotty “Humph!” The Man, noticing the Camel’s refusal to participate, decides to let him be and assigns extra work to the Horse, Dog, and Ox to compensate. Summary of How the Camel Got His Hump

In this article, you will be reading How the Camel got his Hump Summary. This is a poem by Sir Rudyard Kipling. It is a fable. This is a story about a lazy camel. He would not work and would just say ‘Humph!’ to everyone who asked him to work. The horse, the dog, and the ox went to him to ask him to work. But he did not listen to them.

All three had to work double-time due to this. Thus, they decided to complain about the camel to the Djinn of All Deserts. When the camel did not listen to the Djinn also, he punished him by giving him a hump. With the help of this hump, a camel can now work for three days without even eating or drinking.

How the Camel got his Hump Summary in English

The poem describes a story about how the camel got his hump. The poet says that at the beginning of the world, everything was new. The animals had just started to work for human beings. The story is about a camel who lived in the middle of a Howling Desert. He ate sticks and thorns and was not interested to work for anyone. Whenever anyone spoke to him, he would say ‘Humph!’.

On a Monday morning, the horse went to him. He told him to come out and sprint. But the camel, as usual, said ‘Humph!’. The horse told this to the man. After some time, a dog came to the camel and asked him to work. But again, the camel said ‘Humph!’. Later, the Ox came to him. As per his habit, the camel replied ‘Humph!’ to him too.

The man summoned the horse, the dog, and the Ox. He asked them about the camel. All three animals told him what had happened. Even after hearing them, the man asked them to work double-time in order to compensate for the camel’s work. This made all three of them furious and angry. They decided to held a panchayat. In the panchayat, came the Djinn of All Deserts.

During the panchayat, the horse complained about the camel to the Djinn. He told him that the camel would not work and only say ‘Humph!’ all the time. The Djinn promised them that he will set the camel right.

The Djinn found the camel in the desert where he was looking at his reflection in the water. He asked the camel to work but as usual, the camel said ‘Humph!’. As soon as the camel uttered these words, he saw his beautiful back puffing up. This was very strange. The camel was very proud of his beautiful back but now it became ugly.

The Djinn explained to the camel that it was his own hump. He is only responsible for this as he did not work. The Djinn now asked the camel to work but he said he can’t work due to this hump. He told the camel that as he did not work for three days, with this hump he can now work for three days without eating or drinking. From that day, the camel has a hump but still, it has not learned to behave.

Short Summary – How The Camel Got His Hump

The poem relates the story of the origin of the camel’s hump. The poet claims that everything was brand-new at the beginning of the world. The creatures had only recently begun to work for humans. The narrative focuses on a camel that lived in the Howling Desert. He consumed thorns and sticks and had no desire to work for anyone. He would remain immovable and mutter, “Humph!

The horse arrived to him on a Monday morning. He instructed him to run outside. The camel, though, continued to hump as usual. The horse informed the man of this. A dog eventually approached the camel and requested him to work after some time. But the camel continued, “Humph!” The Ox eventually found him. The camel gave him his usual “Humph!” reaction.

The man called for the ox, the dog, and the horse. Regarding the camel, he questioned. All three creatures informed him of what had happened. Even after hearing them, the man insisted that they work twice as hard to make up for the camel’s work. All three of them became angry and furious as a result. They chose to summon a panchayat. The Djinn of All Deserts arrived in the panchayat.

The horse reported to the Djinn about the camel at the panchayat. He only used the word “Humph!” while informing him that the camel would not work. They were assured by the Djinn that he would make the camel right.

The camel was watching his reflection in the water when the Djinn discovered him in the desert. The camel gave him its usual “Humph” response when he ordered it to work. The moment the camel said these words, he noticed his lovely back puffing out. This was quite odd. The camel was extremely proud of his gorgeous back until it started to look ugly.

It was the camel’s natural hump, the Djinn said, explaining this to him. As he didn’t work, he is the only one responsible for this. The camel was now invited to work by the Djinn, but he refused because of his hump. According to him, the camel can now work for three days without eating or drinking because he hasn’t worked for three days. Since that time, the camel has grown a hump, but it has still not learnt how to behave.

Sir Rudyard Kipling is the author of this poem. It is fiction. This is the story of a sluggish camel. He would remain immovable and mutter, “Humph!

A story about camel who got his hump.

There was a lazy camel who did not want to work for humans. He ate thorns and sticks all day. A horse came and told him to work like him. “Humph!”, said the camel. A dog came and told him to fetch like him. The camel replied the same way, and the dog went to the man to tell him everything.

An ox came and advised him to plough like him, “Humph”, said the camel. The man summoned the dog, horse, and ox. He told them to work a double shift to compensate for the work the camel did not do. They held a panchayat, and the camel laughed at them.

A Djinn came visited there. He was in charge of the whole desert. The trio went to him to complain about the camel. Horse asked if it was all right not to work. “Certainly not”, the Djinn replied. They complained about the camel.

The Djinn went to the camel, who was looking at his reflection in the water. The Djinn asked him about his idleness. He replied with the usual, “Humph”. Soon, he developed a hump on his back. The Djinn advised him to work as he was the cause for the more than usual work of the dog, horse and the ox.

The camel said he could not work with a hump on his back. The Djinn told him that the hump was to store food and water since he had not worked for three days. So, he must not eat, and this hump would help him store food. 

The camel tried his best to work, but he could not catch the three days that he missed up to this day.

The world had just begun. The animals had started working for humans. The Horse, the Dog, and the Ox pulled loads and served man. But there was only one animal Camel that refused to work. It lived in the desert and ate thorny plants. When anybody spoke to him, he said ‘Humph!’.

One Monday morning the Horse came to the Camel. He told the desert animal to work like them. So did the Dog and the Ox. But they had no success. Then the three complained to Man against the Camel. But Man grew angry and asked them to work double to compensate Camel’s work. So the animals were not happy. They held a panchayat. The Camel laughed at them and went away.

- The Horse, the Dog, and the Ox complained to Man about the Camel. - The Camel refused to work while the other animals were pulling loads and serving humans. - The Horse, the Dog, and the Ox tried to convince the Camel to work like them, but they were unsuccessful. - Frustrated, they decided to complain to Man about the Camel's refusal to work. - Man, however, grew angry and instead asked the Horse, the Dog, and the Ox to work double to compensate for the Camel's lack of contribution. - Therefore, the reason why the Horse, the Dog, and the Ox complained to Man about the Camel was because the Camel refused to work.

Soon the Djinn or the Spirit in charge of deserts came there. He listened to their complaint and agreed with them. He decided to punish such an idle animal. He found the Camel looking at his own reflection in the pool of water. He had made the three other animals do extra work since Monday morning. When the Djinn aked him to clarify, the Camel only said ‘Humph’! He showed no willingness to work.

The Djinn put a curse on the Camel. Soon the Camel’s back puffed up into a big hump. It was Thursday. The Camel was told to work for three days without eating anything, because his food was stored in his hump. 

But the hump on his back made it difficult for him to carry the load. The Djinn said that it would serve as a storehouse of food. He also said that it would disappear when the Camel would learn to behave properly.

The Camel went away to join the Three. From that day he has been wearing a hump but there was no escape from work. He has, however, still not learned to behave.

Camel is a useful domestic animal which is tamed by human beings for thousands of years. It is popularly known as the “Ship of the Desert”. It is mainly found in the desert areas of Africa, Middle East Asia etc. In India it is found in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is able to walk for long distances in desert areas where neither water nor vegetation exists. Camels are mostly used by nomadic people of Africa and Asia; camel has a long neck and legs. People use to sit on the back of camel for riding in desert areas.

Camel is an animal which eats grass, leaves, fruits, vegetables etc, it can eat dry fodder also like dry grass and dry leaves. It can easily travel up to 40 to 50 kms if it is not carrying any kind of load.

Camel is an important animal of earth which mainly belongs to Arabia. It is a most useful animal in the desert because it runs fast on sand where vehicles can’t run. That’s why it is called as “Ship of the Desert”. They eat lot of food and drink lots of water at a time and store it in their hump which is on their back. The stored food and water in the hump helps the camel to walk and work tirelessly and they can live without food and water for many days.
