Communication is critical for effective teams, and meetings are essential for effective communication. So scheduling meeting rooms should be quick and easy, right?

It's often not. Between finding an appropriate space, determining who should be included, what resources are needed and who to notify, scheduling dozens of meetings each month can eat into valuable time. If you're booking spaces for lessons or social events, the frustrations are the same.

The best way to streamline this additional task is through automation. This guide is designed to help software buyers learn the functionality and applications of room scheduling software so businesses and individuals can book rooms quickly and move on with their day.

We'll cover the following topics:

What Is Room Scheduling Software?

Common room scheduling software functionality, types of room scheduling software buyers, how is it priced.

As we mentioned, scheduling meetings involves gathering rooms, resources and people. Room scheduling software is designed to coordinate these various parts so planners can schedule with awareness of timing or resource conflicts.

No matter what type of room scheduling or reservations you're making, software makes the process quicker and simpler. This includes:

Booking a meeting room in an office

Reserving a space for private lessons

Renting equipment for a conference

These capabilities benefit everyone when used organization-wide, as the software offers a shared view into which spaces are in-use or claimed for a specific time in the future. And permission settings allow managers to restrict access to scheduling tools to avoid confusion.

Most vendors in this space offer similar functionality, so the biggest factors in your decision will include ease-of-use and cost. We'll review the common functionality below.

Room scheduling software is adaptable to most applications and industries, but the specific set of features you need can depend on your business:

Facilities managers. These professionals are responsible for creating a productive atmosphere for employees in an office building, and a critical part of this is managing spaces. Facilities managers can use room scheduling software to enable workers to reserve rooms, equipment and desks (called office hoteling , which can reduce facility costs).

Facilities managers of a college campus can also use software in a similar way to schedule and manage speaking or student association events in buildings across campus. Some systems can integrate existing student information system (SIS) data to help determine the most appropriate classroom assignments.

Event coordinators. Those who plan events, such as weddings or conferences , can use room scheduling software to send confirmation emails and receive registration information to better gauge attendee numbers. During events, the coordinator can use the system to ensure space is utilized efficiently.

Instructors and tutors. Independent teachers and tutors can use room scheduling software to manage their own private lessons. Students can access the online scheduling wizard to make appointments.

Users with their own studios and team of instructors can use it in the same way, but also be able to assign lessons and other teachers to specific rooms.

Pricing models for room scheduling software are generally consistent, but buyers should be aware of other limitations or added costs they may encounter when seeking a system.

Most vendors offer room scheduling software with a basic fee per month pricing , and these usually have limitations on the number of rooms to manage or number of users who can use the system .

However, it's not uncommon to see special pricing models that allow users to pay a flat fee for each event they schedule . These versions typically have more strict limitations on functionality.

Finally, keep in mind vendors often offer three or more versions of their systems, with the functionality increasing along with the pricing. It's crucial to carefully evaluate the differences in each version of the software to find the capabilities you truly need, and avoid paying for features you won't use.

University housing, what happened understanding room assignments, please note: most of the content on this page is applicable for room assignments made during the summer for the upcoming fall semester..

room assignment decoding

An explanation for students who don’t get their preferred room assignment.

With the annual summer release of room assignments, University Housing gets a number of phone calls from concerned students, family members, and sometimes even friends, who want to know: (a) why the student didn’t get their top-choice room assignment and (b) what can be done about it.

In an effort to answer some of these questions, we’ve created the following guide for students.

Why Didn’t I Get My Preferred Roommate?

Explanation: when two roommates do not have matching requests, it is possible that they will not be paired together.

Living Learning Community Preference The most frequent item that does not match will be Living Learning Communities. Since LLCs are University Housing’s top assignment priority, students may be assigned to their LLC, even if it means failing to grant a requested roommate. How can you tell if this happened to your request? Check the list of LLC locations below. If either student is placed in these areas, it means that they had an LLC request that broke the roommate pairing.

Roommate Preference At times, we see pairs of students who did not request each other, even though they think they did. In its most benign circumstance, this may happen if someone copied a UWM ID# wrong. However, every year we also see instances in which one roommate who backed out or failed to include the UWM ID#. You can tell if you and your roommate(s) requested each other by returning to your Contract Preference Page in MyHousing. If you see a “confirmed” note next to the UWM ID# of your roommate(s) it indicates that the numbers were properly entered by all parties. If you see “unconfirmed” than the numbers entered did not match up.

Returner Self-Assignment If one of the two roommates participated in Returner Self-Assignment (where the 2022-23 Housing Residents picked their rooms for 2023-24), they may have ended up in a suite that didn’t have space for a new student to be assigned, or a space where a first-year student may not be eligible to live (Sandburg East).

Explanation: this is a rare circumstance but happens every year as we reach the end of available spaces. Because students are assigned in an order determined by random lottery, we will reach a point where every double or triple room has one open spot, but not two. At this point, a roommate pairing will be broken. If this occurs, the assignment system will next try to assign two requested roommates relatively close to each other (often in the same suite, sometimes on the same floor or in the same building). However, because so many spaces are usually taken when we reach this point of assignments, it is not guaranteed.

Explanation: this occurs for a number of reasons. Your roommate may have never completed a University Housing contract, they may have completed a University Housing contract, but AFTER the priority deadline of May 1, or they may have canceled a previously submitted contract. In any of these cases, you would be assigned without them.

Why Didn’t I Get My Preferred Living Learning Community?

Explanation: most of our Living Learning Communities are reserved for students who are admitted to a particular school/college or have a particular major. The most confusing of these is Health Professions, which require students to be admitted to the College of Nursing or College of Health Sciences. Both of those are different than AOC-Nursing or AOC-Health Sciences.

Explanation: a few of our LLCs had more demand than there were available beds. In this case we continue to monitor vacancies and reassign from the waitlist when possible.

Why Didn’t I Get My Preferred Building/Room Type?

Explanation: Certain preferences take priority over others as we go through our lottery process. In order to maximize satisfaction on these priorities, other preferences may not be considered.

Living Learning Community Preference University Housing’s top priority is to assign a student to their preferred LLC. That means we would assign them to their LLC even if it meant not giving them the building or room type they requested.

Roommate Preference University Housing’s second priority is to assign a student with their preferred roommate. That means we would assign them to their preferred roommate even if it meant not giving them the building or room type they requested.

Explanation: Like all housing markets, there’s a balance between supply and demand. For instance: we have far more requests for singles and triples than for doubles. Of all the room types, triples are the smallest offering we have. If we didn’t have your top preference available, we considered second or third options. If none of those were available in the same building, then the student was likely assigned to a different building.

How Can I Tell If I’m In An LLC

The most reliable way to determine is based on your room assignment. General locations of LLCs are listed in the table below (though some suites in the identified floors may not be LLC suites).

So, what can I do now?

First, take a look and explore your newly assigned space. Every building (in fact, every home!) students will have for the rest of their life will have pros and cons. Learning about your new building, and how to maximize your satisfaction are important steps. We’ve got layouts of most buildings and room types available on the University Housing website at www.uwm.edu/housing . If you’re coming for New Student Orientation (or TASO), we offer tours of most buildings and would be happy to show you those spaces. We also offer tours throughout the week. Set up an individual tour by registering on our University Housing Tours site.

Second, if you would like to change part of your assignment in regards to an LLC, email [email protected] . This would allow you to change your LLC preference, which may in turn change your assignment.

Third, if you have a non-LLC room assignment concern and would like to request a room change of your assignment, you can complete a Summer Room Change Process Request Form at https://uwm.edu/housing/secure/assignment-change-request/ . All requests must be submitted by July 7, 2023. This is the form you use if you would like to re-request a roommate who you weren’t paired with, or if you’d like to move to a different building. University Housing cannot guarantee if your request will be granted, but historically, we’ve been able to accommodate more than 50% of requested changes.

Residents With Assignments Starting In January: University Housing does its best to accommodate the preferences you indicate when you sign your online contract, with room assignments made in a randomized order determined by lottery. (LLC requests are made by emailing [email protected], which are then added to the resident preferences before the lottery is run). Due to a very limited supply of available spaces, it is very difficult to match most preferences. Roommate and LLC requests are the most difficult to match, followed by room type. All residents who submit their Spring-only Housing Contract by December 1 have an equal chance in the lottery. If you would like to explore a room change, please discuss it with your RA after you’ve moved in.

You've probably been caught in one of these situations before. You want to have a quick meeting with someone without background noise . In this case, you can either walk around your office with the hope of finding an empty room, or frantically ask in Slack if there's a free conference room. Neither of which is a great use of your time.

assignment room

So what do you do?

We all know how important meeting rooms are for employee productivity and success. The first step is to create functional meeting spaces for employees, and the second step is to find a way to ensure they're used effectively and efficiently. We need a system to make sure everyone gets the most use out of these rooms as possible.

Enter the solution: room scheduling software.

Why should I invest in room scheduling software?

With room scheduling software, you'll eliminate two big problems: room hoarding and wasted meetings.

Room hoarding occurs when there's no set procedure for booking rooms. With competition for every spot, people will start showing up early to reserve their meeting rooms. People don't do this maliciously, rather it's a failure of the system to provide people with notice of when rooms will be available.

Wasted meetings are also a sore spot for meeting rooms without scheduling software. What happens when a meeting is canceled? When this space opens up, people don't know and your room sits empty. This room could be used by those looking to book an impromptu meeting or had to reschedule.

Room scheduling software lets employees see what rooms will be open when they want to meet. It'll also update as rooms become available. You won't need to sit in your room 30 minutes early to hold on to it. You can also view what equipment is in the room, such as video conferencing equipment .

Ready to solve these problems once and for all? Here are some room scheduling software options for your meeting rooms.

Best Room Scheduling Software

  • Office Space

Robin is one of the first room scheduling software providers that comes to mind. You're able to book your meeting rooms, as well as desks, workstations, and other areas.

You can also review the analytics of your meeting room and office space usage. View which rooms are most or least often booked to determine if you're using space effectively. You can also see which need equipment upgrades, or have maintenance needs.

Robin integrates with Slack , Zoom , Google Calendar , and other workplace apps to get the most out of your meeting rooms. Book a meeting room through your Slack channel, and it'll show up on your Google Calendar.

Skedda 's booking features can be used by music venues, sports facilities, offices, as well as meeting rooms. You might think that the software used by a music venue has no place in the office. However, the features shared between the two make it a great option for efficient use of space.

Skedda is a cloud-based software that manages the booking of all types of rooms across your organization. A key highlight is its control over who can view open spaces. As an admin, you can give out public links to those outside of your organization to view spaces. You're also able to keep control of those inside your organization. It makes it easy for those who share meeting rooms with other companies to view room openings across company lines. You won't have to make a separate calendar system or share sensitive data with each other.

Much like other room scheduling solutions, Teem is built to get the most out of your meeting spaces. With the ability to book across workspaces, you're covered no matter what you want to reserve.

Their app also makes it easy to book from your phone, without having to log into a web page. Tablet room displays can be mounted outside of each space so that meetings can be added or removed in person. Calendar plug-ins make it easy to schedule meetings across Outlook, Office 365, and Google Calendar.

Teem also offers secure visitor management systems as well. Visitors can sign in to a tablet at a front desk and complete any necessary paperwork at their arrival. The system then notifies you via Slack, email, or text that they're in your lobby.

iOffice provides room scheduling software along with dozens of other features that your office could need. Calendar and chat platform integrations, real-time room availability, and meeting room analytics are all offered. You can book rooms through their cloud-based web page, room booking tablets, or your phone.

The differentiator between iOffice and others is their in-room motion sensor device. Most other software requires the meeting owner to confirm if a meeting is taking place. iOffice uses motion sensors in each room to determine if the meeting is happening. If it senses that the room is empty after some time, it'll automatically re-open the room

The app also can filter rooms based on equipment or size needs, as well as requesting other services for specific rooms. That way your facility manager can know what needs to be set up for that room if they start to see multiple requests.

5. Office Space

Office Space is the room scheduling software built around your floor plan. After uploading a model of your office plan, you can dive right into booking your meetings. Check out room features, set up a meeting through Slack, and view room status through their app.

One unique feature of Office Space is its room sensor integration. Instead of having to pay for a motion sensor as part of your room scheduling package, you can use your own! Office Space integrates with your choice of motion sensor so you can use what's best for your price point.

Joan is another room scheduling software that excels with its hardware. It can be used to schedule your meetings, free up unused rooms, and integrate with your calendars and chat providers.

Joan's selling point is based on its tablet system. They stick onto a meeting room wall or door and have no outside cords, running on an internal battery. This isn't your run of the mill Duracell battery either - they last over three months. The tablets have customizable displays and  programmable commands so you can display welcome messages, notify others about meetings, or ask for IT assistance.

AskCody is optimized for Outlook and Office365 teams. If your company uses Microsoft and is looking for a way to get the most out of their meeting rooms, then AskCody is for you.

It integrates with your Outlook calendar so you don't have to worry about getting everyone on a separate calendar for meeting scheduling. You can set your equipment needs, room size, and meeting time and reserve a meeting room in a flash.

Another neat feature is its ability to work with catering services for your meeting. If you have a company kitchen service, you can request the refreshments you'd like in your meeting room. They'll get a direct message about your request and can plan ahead. You'll take the hassle out of finding all the right food for your big breakfast meetings.

8. OfficeRnD

OfficeRnD takes room scheduling software and applies it to coworking spaces. Running a coworking space requires efficient use of your rooms, so software like this is essential. You'll keep clients happy while keeping your costs to a minimum.

You can track the use of individual rooms as well as your users and determine what's best suited for them. Meetings can be booked by a space manager or by a user, keeping everyone in the loop. It'll take the hassle out of your client's hands if they're too busy to book something themselves. Members can notify a manager about equipment outages, and view what rooms are available as well.

  • Room Assignments

In order to be assigned a room in on-campus housing, a completely filled out and signed contract application, accompanied by the required $50 prepayment, must be received.

Fall 2024 Dragons: students are able to select their own room! Look for your email June 17 regarding your room selection period. Timeslots run after SOAR.

Applications and prepayments must be made in your housing contract .

  • Roommate Groups must be completed by June 15 ; this can be done within your housing application.
  • In most cases, current West Snarr second floor residents can continue living in the same room during the summer. To help ensure keeping your same room, complete your summer housing contract and submit to the Housing Office prior to May 1 .
  • If you would like to request a room change before Fall Move-In day, mid-semester or mid-year you can add yourself to the wait-list and one of our Room Assignment Coordinators will contact you if there is an opening that meets your request.
  • LC Residents with complete roommate groups will be assigned a room on their Learning Community floor in two waves; the first group will be assigned April 15th and the remaining LC residents will be the week of June 1.
  • To view your room assignment and meal plan, log back in to myHousing and select "Room Booking Info" in the top red menu bar.

Room Changes

Requesting a room change after move-in.

We offer Room Change Days during the second week of the Fall and Spring Semesters. Students with a housing assignment can request a room change via myHousing Forms. The Room Change Request form is always available; however, the request isn't instant. Students interested in making a room change should submit the form by 8am on Tuesdays.

How the Process Works

  • Student designates their room type preferences (including roommate preference) in the Room Change Request form.
  • Office staff may communicate with you via email regarding options if you did not specify a specific room.
  • The Housing Office will send out the Approved Room Change via email no later than Wednesday 12pm. It is imperative that students check their email as this is how they will be notified.
  • Students will begin moving on Thursday 2pm and complete it by Sunday 9pm.

While there is not a room change fee, if a student move to a more/less expensive room type, we will prorate the difference on their room charges for the remainder of the semester.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I swap rooms with another student? Yes, the two students who are swapping rooms can simply fill out the Room Change Form and indicate the swap in the comments.
  • Can I get a single room? There are very few single rooms on the main campus. You may add your name to the Single Room Waitlist by emailing [email protected]. Single rooms are assigned by gender on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Are rooms available throughout the semester for room changes? Yes! Students approved for a room change move and then their old room becomes available to others, so room availability is always changing.

New Approaches to Room Allocation or Which Room Gets Assigned to Which Guest?

Updated: Sep 14, 2023

Reservations are still primarily managed manually in most hotels. However, is this approach still appropriate given the current staffing levels and new employee profiles? Is manual room allocation truly the best method to optimize your room plan? What criteria influences these decisions? Or should we consider assigning rooms upon arrival and disregarding guest preferences?

Determining which room is assigned to each reservation has largely remained a completely manual process in the hotel industry. While there are Property Management Systems (PMS) that now automatically allocate reservations within categories, this is based on basic rules and often requires manual adjustments by staff due to changes in occupancy and demand. This can lead to reassigning previously allocated reservations to different rooms. The effort and time that hotels invest in room allocation and the regular shuffling (sometimes referred to as a "Tetris game") can take up several hours per day, especially for larger properties with high occupancy.

Effective room allocation that takes various criteria into account is not only labor-intensive but also results in accommodating guest preferences and profiles, allowing guests to check into the room that suits them upon arrival. For manual room allocation, there are numerous tutorials available, and hotel chains provide additional guidelines to be considered by the front desk team during the assignment process.

Some hotel employees, due to their long-term tenure at the same property, are not only highly skilled at performing this task but also find it fulfilling when they allocate reservations after hours of work, managing to create gaps for additional requests or fulfilling guest preferences.

However, reality presents a slightly different picture. On one hand, there's a shortage of skilled labor, and employees are expected to handle a wider range of tasks. On the other hand, there's a decreasing number of staff members who stay at the same property long enough to know every room and allocate reservations effectively. Manual room allocation and the need to make changes to a confirmed booking add extra (work) costs. These costs are often not accounted for in the hotel industry and are recorded as general front desk activities, which significantly reduce profits and guest-facing time. Reservations are sometimes assigned based on individual employee preferences, and under high pressure, reservations are shifted simply to fill gaps in the room plan as efficiently as possible, regardless of the room's value or category. Free upgrades become necessary in such cases. Optimizing the room plan is an ongoing process, especially during peak occupancy periods.

Why is it so difficult to implement room assignments correctly?

In addition to the multitude of criteria that an employee would need to consider when making assignments, the employee also needs a deep inventory knowledge to carry out a suitable allocation.

Among the additional criteria are, for example: guaranteed versus non-guaranteed bookings, direct bookings versus bookings through third-party channels or specific providers, bookings for families, seniors, guests requiring accessible rooms, adjoining rooms, specific bed configurations, and other guest preferences, repeat guests, check-in and check-out times, etc.

The complexity that comes with effective room allocation is undeniable. Additionally, gaps in the room plan must be minimized, especially since these gaps cannot be automatically sold and could lead to revenue losses, particularly during periods with minimum stay requirements if gaps cannot be sold – for example, over the phone.

While long-serving employees might still find this task meaningful, a closer examination of this workflow raises the question of how feasible and contemporary it is to carry this out with reduced staffing. It's worth considering whether younger generations of employees would value this task in the same way or simply view it as an additional burden to complete without taking into account the aforementioned points.

How can a room plan be optimally utilized?

One approach could be to only assign reservations upon arrival and disregard any preferences or requests. However, this contradicts the goals of any hotelier who aims to meet the needs of their guests and provide them with an unforgettable stay. Moreover, such a strategy is more likely to result in overbooking of room categories, an increased number of complimentary upgrades, and negative guest feedback. Effective demand management also involves considering stay restrictions to minimize gaps in occupancy, and last-minute room assignment is suboptimal in this context.

The fundamental issue lies not only in the lack of skilled personnel, lack of knowledge about the property, or time for allocation but mainly in the fact that room inventory isn't detailed enough in systems to be used as criteria for assignment.

However, who says that room inventory must continue to be managed solely within categories, and how can artificial intelligence be better employed in this case?

Room assignments using artificial intelligence every room assignment involves certain considerations: Should the guest's preference be taken into account to satisfy them, or should short-term revenue be optimized? With a detailed inventory structure and the use of artificial intelligence, an optimal room assignment solution can be created dynamically, adapting to the desired strategy with each new booking situation.

It's comparable to the invention of the washing machine: While you still need to put the laundry in the drum, set the wash program, and press start, from that moment on, you save an immense amount of time, and the result is much better than continuing to wash the laundry by hand.

The tasks and requirements for hotel employees are constantly changing, much like in many other industries. However, the hospitality sector is a service industry where the primary focus is on providing guests with a service and ensuring a positive stay experience.

The cloud-based technologies available in the hospitality industry not only allow many tasks to be carried out from different locations (remotely), but also enable employees to have more time available for guests. This is achieved by digitizing and ideally automating downstream operational processes.

assignment room

An optimized room plan is just one of many operational tasks that can be automated using intelligent technology in the future. Such automation could significantly reduce the current workload while simultaneously efficiently accommodating guest preferences and room plans to maximize revenue for the establishment.

Housing assignments.

Room assignments are made based on seniority. As a returning student, you will have an opportunity to sign up for housing at the end of the academic year for the next year.

As a new incoming student, you will need to submit your Housing/Commuter App on your Pride Page and then complete the roommate questionnaire at PAWS orientation. Once you have selected your roommate or one has been assigned to you, you will be assigned a room and will receive a confirmation email. You will receive your official housing assignment via your Greensboro College email address.

The first week of school, you and your roommate will fill out a roommate contract, which will be facilitated by your RA in order to help the two of you set some guidelines for sharing the room. The Office of Residence Life will make every possible consideration in pairing roommates based on information contained in your housing application. The assignment process is extremely time consuming and will be completed as soon as possible, usually by the end of July.

Room Changes

There will be a mandatory room freeze until the Add/Drop period is over. Requests for room changes will be accepted only after the Add/Drop period, and must be made in writing to your RA via a specific form available from your RA.

If you do not self-identify a new roommate, you will need to attend a round-table program in your hall to identify a new roommate. Once you have paired with a roommate, you will be re-assigned to an empty room in your hall.

A resident wishing to move may also select to a private room to move into. Private rooms have limited availability and require an additional cost and are space-limited. A resident requesting a private room will be placed on a waiting list and notified when a room becomes available.

Residents without a roommate after the Add/Drop period will be consolidated. Residents to be consolidated will be notified in writing of the process and timeline of the method. Consolidation will be completed before Fall Break. Any individual consolidation that is necessary after Fall Break will be accomplished on a case-by-case basis.

All room changes must be approved by the Director of Residence Life. Any resident who changes rooms without prior approval will be required to return to their originally assigned room and will be charged an unapproved room change fee. Fees are outlined in the current Pride Guide.

Living Off Campus

All Greensboro College students are required to live on campus until they have earned 60 credits. All students with fewer than 60 earned credits will be charged for room and board automatically. Exceptions to this policy will be granted based on the circumstances listed below.

Housing Waiver

Students wishint to live off campus must fill out a housing waiver form at the Office of Residence Life.

Waivers are due no later than April 15 for the following fall semester and December 1 for the following spring semester. If a spring waiver is granted, it will supersede the original, nine-month housing contract signed in the fall. Housing waivers are granted to:

  • Students who commute from their permanent home address within a 50-mile radius of campus.
  • Students who have earned 60 academic credits.
  • Students who are married.
  • A student must be 21 prior to Oct. 1 to be exempt from campus housing for the fall semester.
  • A student must be 21 prior to Feb. 1 to be exempt from campus housing for the spring semester.

Residence Life: Auxiliary Services

All residential students receive a mailbox on campus. Your mailbox assignment and your college address will be given to you during check-in. Mailboxes are located on the ground floor of the Student Center. Residents will retain the same mailbox each year they live on campus.

Renter’s Insurance

The Office of Residential Life highly recommends that each student at Greensboro College consider a form of renter’s insurance.Renter’s insurance often covers your belongings if they are damaged as a result of fire or flood as well as loss due to theft or vandalism.

Check with your family’s insurance policy to see if your belongings are covered when you are in college. You can also secure renter’s insurance on your own through a company like National Student Services Inc.

Computing Services

  • Each residence hall room has two Ethernet ports.
  • Internet access is granted free of charge to residential students.
  • Every residence hall is also set up for wireless capabilities. Dial-up modems are not permitted, nor are they necessary on campus.
  • Residents must provide their own computers and cables or wireless card for Internet access.

To report a computing issue, submit an IT ticket by emailing [email protected]

Mold and Mildew

We use water to heat and cool our buildings, and combined with North Carolina’s high relative humidity, this fosters an environment where mold and mildew can grow. To help prevent mold and mildew growth, it’s essential students do the following:

  • Report any water problems (sink or toilet leaks, excessive pipe condensation, dripping, etc.) immediately through the online work order system
  • Regularly clean your room and bathroom, including your shower liner in Hill Hall.
  • Do not leave wet towels or sweaty workout clothes or equipment lying around. Always hang to dry.
  • Do not leave wet laundry in the washing machines. Immediately, move them to a dryer.
  • If you see mold or mildew in your room or other places in your residence hall, submit a work order as soon as possible.

Tips for Allergy Sufferers

  • Take any medication that has been prescribed to you and follow the directions of your doctor. If you are symptomatic, you can visit the on-campus Health Center free of charge.
  • Regularly dust, vacuum, and clean your room to eliminate allergens from your room.
  • If you are extremely sensitive, you may want to invest in an air purifier for your room.

Description

The story of western correspondents in Russia is the story of Russia's attitude to the west. Russia has at different times been alternately open to western ideas and contacts, cautious and distant or, for much of the twentieth century, all but closed off. From the revolutionary period of the First World War onwards, correspondents in Russia have striven to tell the story of a country known to few outsiders. Their stories have not always been well received by political elites, audiences, and even editors in their own countries-but their accounts have been a huge influence on how the West understands Russia. Not always perfect, at times downright misleading, they have, overall, been immensely valuable.

In Assignment Moscow, former foreign correspondent James Rodgers analyses the news coverage of Russia throughout history, from the coverage of the siege of the Winter Palace and a plot to kill Stalin, to the Chernobyl explosion and the Salisbury poison scandal.

Advance Praise

“Reporting from Russia has never been easy; Rodgers vividly captures the changing fortunes of Moscow correspondents over the past hundred years, as they penetrated the mysteries of life in Russia and brought them to our newspapers and screens. Some were duped, some were fellow-travellers or spies; most battled against censors and blank-faced politicians; all have helped to shape our understanding of the world's biggest country.” – Angus Roxburgh, former Moscow correspondent for the BBC, Sunday Times and Economist

“Writing about journalism in Russia since the revolution, James Rodgers rightly emphasises that to understand Russia you have to talk to people of all kinds. But he argues that even correspondents who knew the language and the history found it hard to report dispassionately because of official obstruction and their own emotional involvement.” – Rodric Braithwaite

“A highly original, engrossing and accessible book, Assignment Moscow stands out among journalistic accounts of Russia for its subtlety, humility and historic scope. It tells the story of British and American journalists who aimed to throw light on Russia from Lenin to Putin, and in the process illuminated the West itself.” – Arkady Ostrovsky, Author of The Invention of Russia: The Rise of Putin and the age of Fake News, Winner of the 2016 Orwell Prize

“It is hard to believe that in the torrent of books published on Russia each year, that one could come along as original and valuable as Assignment Moscow. One comes to appreciate the service of our reporting men and women in Moscow. For all their fallibilities, without their dedication, we wouldn't have half the understanding of Russia that we have today, imperfect as it will always be. We therefore owe them – and especially Rodgers as journalist, teacher, analyst and cataloguer – a huge debt.” – James Nixey, Chatham House

ATTILA THE PUN: A Magic Moscow Story

by Daniel Pinkwater ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 5, 1981

This companion to last year's Magic Moscow is one of Pinkwater's trifles, not as far-out funny as its predecessor and thinner altogether, but a little better than its title and still containing enough throwaway laugh lines to uphold the joke-butt status of Hoboken, New Jersey--where a real comic-book collector named Steve actually does run a soft-ice-cream parlor called the Magic something-or-other and dispenses health-junk combinations almost as bizarre as the Nuclear Meltdown featured here. It's one of the regular Meltdown buyers, a fake ""mystic seer"" named Lamont Penumbra, who sets the action (such as it is) in motion in his loft above Hoboken's Parthenon Puerto Rican Restaurant. Armed with some old magic books acquired by Steve, and using Steve's kid helper Norman Bleistift (the narrator) as a go-between, Lamont sets out to summon ""a famous person from the past"" and gets Attila the Hun's less famous brother Attila the Pun. The problem then is what to do with this stomping, singing, sword-whacking, never-sleeping, and endlessly pun-cracking ghost--and the solution, dreamed up by Norman and following close on the heels of the problem's formulation, is to make him night watchman and Friday night comic at the Magic Moscow. ""It turns out that fifth-century Hun humor really goes over well in Hoboken,"" and Attila's act becomes the biggest show in town. Readers are treated to a sampling, and no doubt kids will take more enthusiastically than reviewers to Attila's puns.

Giants Make Subtle, Yet Potentially Important Change to Training Facility

The Giants are trying to cut down on the number of soft tissue injuries that force players to miss games and practice time.

  • Author: Michael Lee
  • Publish date: Apr 16, 2024

In this story:

Of all the categories in which the New York Giants have found themselves among the league leaders on an annual basis, the one category in which they would just as soon rank toward the bottom of the league rather than the top is injuries.

To hopefully end that streak, the Giants re-hired Aaron Wellman as the team's Executive Director of Player Performance. Wellman, who had an earlier stint with the team back in 2016-2019 as the strength and conditioning coordinator, helped the Giants curtail some of those nagging injuries that have seemingly spiraled out of control of late.

Now in his second tenure with the team and in charge of the entire performance program, including strength and conditioning, Wellman has wasted little time revamping the team's weight room to better reflect the tested philosophies he believes in.

Head coach Brian Daboll, speaking to reporters via video conference on the first day of the team's off-season program, mentioned one such change Wellman had made to the weight room: the addition of a piece of turf.

Why is that significant? Performing different movements and exercises on a carpet versus natural grass versus turf can change the exertion level on the body. For example, grass is known to give a little better than carpet, so the thought process is that if the players are going to be playing on artificial turf, it makes sense for them to do some of their exercises and movements on the same surface.

Whether this change reduces the number of soft tissue injuries remains to be seen. Still, the Giants have to do something to stop this seemingly annual rash of injuries that have repeatedly thwarted them.
