Why congratulate your coworkers on new jobs?

When might you congratulate your coworkers, how to congratulate someone on a new job, 40 messages that say, “congratulations on your new job”, final tips for a memorable farewell.

It’s Monday morning. You’re sipping a coffee, scrolling through LinkedIn or checking your email as you prepare to start your day. Suddenly, you see it: one of your colleagues shared a new job or promotion announcement with the office.

Your reaction to this news will vary. You might be proud of your colleague’s achievement, disappointed you didn’t get the promotion , or relieved to have one less difficult coworker in the office. Regardless of your personal feelings, your next step is to say, “Congratulations on your new job.”

Naturally, though, your peer will likely receive an influx of identical-sounding sentiments. So, how do you get your message to stand out? Let’s explore how to recognize your coworker’s success warmly and professionally.

colleagues-at-work-celebrating

You’re not expressly obligated to congratulate someone on a promotion or new job. But offering your colleague a simple commendation is a nice thing to do — and it can benefit you and your company.

Saying “congrats” is a great way to strengthen and maintain your workplace relationships . Telling a colleague you’re excited for them and wishing them luck in their new chapter creates a positive and memorable impression — which can come in handy when networking in the future. And these kinds of connections are incredibly valuable: up to 80% of jobs are filled through networking .

In the same vein, congratulating an outgoing coworker can boost employee morale. Like those holiday messages and birthday wishes you share around the office each year, a celebratory note goes a long way toward creating a positive atmosphere — other team members will notice. Since a positive work environment can increase productivity and creativity , it’s wise to wish your outgoing coworkers “good luck” for the new journey ahead.

tree-men-shaking-hands-happy

You should congratulate your peers on any career development , from a new role to a professional anniversary. This rule goes double for managers and team leaders, as offering congratulations is a great way to recognize your employees’ hard work, which will, in turn, inspire and motivate them.

Be sure to offer sincere congratulations when anyone in your office:

Reaches a work anniversary

Moves to a new department

Earns a promotion

Starts a new job with a new company

Let’s say someone on your team is moving to a new workplace. You want to congratulate them before they leave, but are unsure how to go about it.

Extend your congratulations in a way that’s comfortable for you and your coworker. Try one of the following methods:

A greeting card: If a coworker is moving jobs (or even switching departments), you might pick up a “Congratulations on your new job” card for you and your colleagues to sign. You can share your excitement and admiration through your written message — just remember to leave some signing space for everyone else.

LinkedIn comments or messages: When someone lands their dream job, they’ll likely update their LinkedIn profile to reflect the upcoming transition. The resulting post is a great place to extend your well wishes. You could also message your colleague directly if you’d like to share a private congratulations on the platform.

Email: Your coworker may email the team to alert everyone of their promotion. Reply to the goodbye email with your congratulatory message — just ensure you follow proper email etiquette and think twice before hitting “reply all.”

Face-to-face: Sometimes, the best way to congratulate a colleague is to do it in person. Face-to-face communication is vital to office life — and, more broadly, the human experience — so don’t discredit the power of saying “congrats” in the break room or at an office party.

Figuring out how to congratulate someone on a new job is all about finding the right words and tone. Your message should be upbeat and celebratory, but it should also be professional. Here are a few messages you can use to inspire your next congratulations:

Good luck messages

One of the most thoughtful congratulatory messages you can share with a coworker is a simple “Good luck” for the future. Here are a few of our favorite good luck messages for your colleague, manager, or office bestie:

For a friend:

With skills like yours, you don’t need luck — but good luck in your new job, anyway!

Congratulations on the new job! You deserve it, and I know you’ll excel in your new role from the very first day.

I know you’ll be successful wherever you go. Best wishes for this new career opportunity.

Congratulations on this next step in your career. I can’t wait to celebrate with you and hear all about it!

For a colleague:

Funny messages

They say laughter is the best medicine, so why not share a little humor when your favorite coworker changes jobs? If you want your colleague to leave in stitches, we have a few funny congratulations messages you can use. (We don’t recommend these messages for your boss, though — keep it 100% professional there.)

Congratulations — fancy new job, fancy new parking spot! Here’s to you.

Glad to see that resume of yours get some new life! In all seriousness, you are so deserving of this new opportunity. Congrats.

Hope the new office has great coffee — I know you need a strong cup to kick off your day. Congrats on your new position!

Finally, a new deskmate. Just kidding — and congrats! I’ll miss you loads.

Don’t let your new job be an excuse for missing our lunch dates. Congratulations!

Congrats on the new job! Hope your new colleagues are as cool (and quirky) as us.

Congratulations on your promotion! Next stop: CEO.

Crossing my fingers that this new role comes with better coffee! Cheers to you and your success.

So, who gets dibs on your desk? Just kidding! Seriously, congratulations — you deserve it.

Inspirational quotes

If you’re unsure how to say “congrats” in your own words, using an inspirational saying is a nice touch. Try adding one of these quotes to your message:

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams!” — Henry David Thoreau

“Find a job you like, and you add five days to every week.” — H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

“A new job is not a new beginning. It is a path to create a new ending.” — Unknown

“Opportunities don't happen, you create them.” — Chris Grosser

Telling a coworker, “Congratulations on your new job,” can be bittersweet, but it’s an essential part of office life.

Remember to be kind, cheerful, and authentic in your farewell message . Your colleague will remember this meaningful interaction — and you always want to leave someone with a positive memory of you.

24 Ways to Say Wishing You the Best in Your Future Endeavors

Sharing is caring!

Wishing people well is an act of kindness.

This idea becomes more important in business settings because of the natural and constant need for professionalism.

There are multiple ways in which we can express our desire for others to be well in their future life; saying “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors” is one of them.

In our post today, we have prepared several ways to do so because, in reality, we want to be more creative to sound less monotonous.

First, let’s take a quick look at the meaning of “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors” before we go deeper.

What do we mean by “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors”?

“Wishing you the best in your future endeavors” essentially means that you wish someone success. It is usually (but not exclusively) used in a business setting to mean, “I hope all your future professional pursuits go well.”

“Wishing you the best in your future endeavors”: Meaning in detail

They say “be careful what you wish for” for both good and bad reasons – you either get it or you don’t.

Meanwhile, we say “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors” to wish for someone’s success in the future.

Dear Sally,     You have been one of the greatest people I have worked with my entire life. For that, I am truly saddened by your early retirement decision. On the flip side, I am also happy that you will now be able to spend more time with your family and hobbies. Please know that I appreciate you.

Wishing you the best in your future endeavors!

Oftentimes, we do this when someone leaves a company or any kind of organization they’ve been part of for some time.

Although with quite a similar positive connotation, this is different from wishing someone for the upcoming weekend in terms of time reference.

When we wish someone good luck for their future, we simply imply an indefinite period that is yet to occur.

Work anniversary wishes are also other forms of wishes that we can send to our colleagues on an annual basis.

These kinds of messages meanwhile help in maintaining healthy relationships within the walls of the company, which leads to better productivity.

To respond to these messages, you may also learn how to write a thank you reply for anniversary wishes in your free time.

Interestingly, whenever someone wishes you well in your future endeavors, it also means that you are likely not going to speak or interact closely with that person again.

That said, we can also understand the expression in our today’s discussion is also considered a goodbye or parting message.

In terms of grammar, people wonder whether “in your future endeavors” or “on your future endeavors” is the right way to go.

The grammatically accepted and widely-used preposition is “in” and not “on.” Therefore, we have to say “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors.”

Now that we have learned the basics, let us go over some other awesome alternatives for “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors.”

24 Alternatives for “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors”

Having a bunch of alternative expressions at the back of our heads allows us to communicate more effectively.

Using the same expression over and over again can make us feel like our mental bank is not flexible enough, which is not that good for our well-being.

So, here are twenty-four other ways to say “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors” that could help you express your inner thoughts better.

While some of these phrases are completely different from the original but can be regarded as some sort of synonyms, others are very close to the original phrase “wishing you the best in your future endeavors” and are, therefore, more like variations of the core phrase.

Depending on the circumstance, each of the following 24 phrases can come in very handy, though, that is for sure.

1. Wishing you the best in your future

“Wishing you the best in your future” is a short and snappy way of saying “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors.”

This alternative is great for making your wish more concise and less pretentious. You can make use of this expression when your message receiver is someone who is not that socially close.

Here’s an example of how it works in the business context:

Dear Helen,

We are sad to know that someone great like you is leaving the company. But, we do understand that you also have your own plans in life.

Wishing you the best in your future!

2.Wishing you the best in everything in life

Another simple message we can use is “Wishing you the best in everything in life.” This message is great because of its all-encompassing undertone.

You can use this expression, for example, when your mentor departs from the company or organization.

Dear Marie,

Please know that it has been a pleasure working with you over the past several years. You have been such a great mentor not only to me but to everyone on the team. I wouldn’t have been able to learn as much if not for your guidance.

Wishing you the best in everything in life!

Kind regards,

3. Wishing you the best in your new role

Sometimes, we know that people leave because they have been given a better and new opportunity somewhere else.

In cases like this, we can specifically use “Wishing you the best in your new role” altogether with some other personal statements.

Dear Justin,

Congratulations! Your transfer and promotion mean that I will not be able to work closely with you anymore, and I am sad about that. However, I am also very happy about what you have achieved.

Wishing you the best in your new role!

Warmest regards ,

4. Wishing you the best in your new journey

To be less specific, we can also use “Wishing you the best in your new journey” in our parting email message.

This expression is great when we do not necessarily know the reason behind the person’s departure from the team.

Dear Drake,

You have been such an amazing teammate, and I’m glad I have gotten to know you. Your decision might be disheartening for the rest of the team, but we completely understand that you also have other plans in life.

Wishing you the best in your new journey!

Sincerely yours,

5. Wishing you the best in your next chapter

Meanwhile, “Wishing you the best in your next chapter” is another general alternative expression we can make use of.

This is also great when we want to avoid specifying the reason behind the person’s decision to leave.

Dear Louise,

You truly are one of the most efficient co-workers I’ve ever had. That said, I am sad that you are leaving the company soon for some valid reason that I do understand.

Wishing you the best in your next chapter!

6. I wish you all the best in your chosen path

Something that bears a more personal and formal tone is “I wish you all the best in your chosen path.”

The tonality and formality of this message are changed because of the presence of the subject pronoun “I.”

Feel free to use this message for those people you’ve bonded well and long enough in the company.

Dear Ellen,

I am truly grateful for the past several years of working closely with you. You have certainly done great for your role as well as the company. I am sad to see you go, but I do understand your situation and decision.

I wish you all the best in your chosen path!

7. I wish you all the best and happiness in life

Still deliberately using the subject pronoun “I,” “I wish you all the best and happiness in life” is another effective well-wishing message.

Personal yet non-pretentious in connotation, this is great for messaging someone who has contributed significantly to the company.

Dear Albert,

We may not be able to work with other from now on, but please know that I truly appreciate everything you’ve done for our organization. You have the most creative mind on the team, and I am glad to have known you.

I wish you all the best and happiness in life!

Kindest regards,

8.I wish you all the best and success in life

Another message bearing a simple, personal, yet formal tone is “I wish you all the best and success in life.”

This message is awesome for those people that truly matter, such as immediate superiors and others who have imparted some form of mentorship.

Dear Tanya,

You truly are the best mentor in the world. I cannot thank you enough for everything you’ve shared with me including knowledge, patience, and dedication. Please know that I sincerely appreciate you.

I wish you all the best and success in life!

Warmest regards,

9. I wish you all the best ahead

Short and simple, “I wish you all the best ahead” is another great option we can use instead of the longer “Wishing you the best in your future endeavors.”

Professional yet also warm-sounding, this message is something we could use not only for immediate supervisors but also for anyone we’ve closely worked with.

Dear Alona,

It would be an understatement to say that I am grateful to you for being my immediate head for the past couple of years. You have been such an amazing mentor to me, and I earnestly thank you for everything you’ve taught me.

I wish you all the best ahead!

Best regards,

10. Good luck and all the best in your new career

Another message that we can use for those leaving the company for some new career-related reason is “Good luck and all the best in your new career.”

This is a great choice for those we know who are taking a new career path due to promotions or those who would like to start their own business.

I am sad about your decision to leave, but I am also happy about the reason behind it. Congratulations on your new role! I am rooting for you .

Good luck and all the best in your new career!

11. Good luck with your next adventure

“Good luck with your new adventure” is something we could use toward those who are leaving the company for educational improvement reasons.

This expression is great because it focuses on wishing for someone’s success in a more general way, thereby making it a flexible message.

Dear Cassy,

Educational improvement is one of the best reasons for leaving a job. I myself actually had to do the same earlier in life, which is why I understand your decision.

Good luck with your next adventure!

Yours sincerely,

12. Best of luck to you as you move into the next life chapter

If we want to say something warm and professional at the same time, “Best of luck to you as you move into the next life chapter” is a great choice.

Its rather long message length conveys more physical and mental effort. This is great if and when we want to convey civility toward the message receiver.

Your past several years of working for and with us are much appreciated. We are all sad to see you go, but we do understand that you also have your own plans in life.

Best of luck to you as you move into your next life chapter!

13. May you achieve everything you’ve hoped and worked for

Last but not least, rather long messages can also be used to convey warmth or personalization.

This is a great choice especially when the message receiver is someone that commands respect and thoughtfulness, such as in the next example.

Dear Mr. Samson,

You have safely kept our family members from road accidents for almost half of your life. For that, I and my whole family cannot thank you enough. You have been such a thoughtful and amazing driver, and we are all sad to see you go. But, we also understand that you want to spend more time with your family.

May you achieve everything you’ve hoped and worked for!

Adams Family

14. All the best in your future endeavors

Saying, “all the best in your future endeavors” is an expression of good will that deviates slightly from the classic phrase, “wishing you all the best in your future endeavors.”

Instead of spelling out that you are wishing someone the best, this phrase implies it. It is therefore a less formal way of saying, “I hope you succeed” or “I wish you success.”

Just as saying, “all the best,” is a short-hand way of saying, “wishing you all the best,” saying, “all the best for your future endeavors” means, “I wish you all the best for your future endeavors.”

If you are leaving a company or writing to someone who is, you might end your final email to your colleagues with this professional sign-off.

Example: How to use “All the best in your future endeavors” in an email

It has been a pleasure working with you these last five years. Your competence and friendly smile did wonders for the office, and you will be dearly missed.

I can’t wait to see what you do next. All the best in your future endeavors!

Warm regards,

15. All the best for your future endeavors

Saying, “All the best for your future endeavors” is a great way to communicate that you hope someone actualizes their professional plans.

It is a shortened variation of “I wish you all the best for your future endeavors.”

If you are on casual terms with the person you are corresponding with, it can feel unnecessarily formal to say, “I wish you all the best…” or “Wishing you all the best…”

To establish a sense of camaraderie and demonstrate that you feel warmly toward the person you’re speaking to, you can opt for this less formal alternative.

As with the other variations of this kind wish included in this list, this makes a great way to end an email. It also works well as a message to write in an office card to wish a departing co-worker farewell.

Example: How to use “All the best for your future endeavors”

Many thanks for being such a wonderful first grade teacher to Emily. She loved going to school this year and came home with countless stories about what a wonderful day she had.

We were so sad to hear that you were leaving Brentford Elementary School at the end of the year, because it means our youngest, Jemima, won’t get to be taught by you.

That said, we’re delighted that you’re moving on professionally and just wanted to write to say thanks and all the best for your future endeavors.

16. All the best for your future endeavours

If you’re wondering why some people say, “endeavors” and others say, “endeavours,” there is a simple explanation.

Basically, “endeavors” is the spelling used in the US (in American English), while “endeavours” is the preferred spelling in the UK (in British English).

If you are corresponding with someone from the British Isles, they may wish you “all the best for your future endeavours.” You can rest assured both that this isn’t a typo and that it means the same thing as the American spelling does.

Do you work for a company that partners with international companies? If so, you might be wondering how to wish someone the best professionally if they are from the UK or Ireland.

Don’t feel the need to use the British English spelling if you would normally use the US one. Your British and Irish colleagues will know what you mean.

Example: How to use “all the best for your future endeavours” in an email

Thanks for reaching out to let me know you are moving on professionally.

It has been a pleasure working with you (and adjusting to each other’s time zones).

All the best for your future endeavours!

Best,

17. All the best in your future undertakings

Saying, “All the best in your future undertakings” is a formal way of wishing someone professional success.

We only really tell people that we hope they achieve highly (or another synonym for success ) when we are parting from them.

If you are heading in a different career direction to a former colleague or collaborator whom you had a formal relationship with, you can say, “All the best in your future undertakings.”

If you want an even more formal alternative, you could say, “I wish you every success in your future undertakings.”

You could also use this if you are writing an out-of-office message when leaving a company and want to wish all your former clients well in your autoreply. z

Example: How to use “All the best in your future undertakings”

Many thanks for helping to facilitate such a positive working relationship between the South Denver Clinic and the Wellford Family Planning Service.

Since you are moving on professionally, I wanted to get in touch to thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our cooperative project.

All the best in your future undertakings.

Kind regards,

Dr. Janine Clapp

18. Good luck in your future endeavors

Wishing someone professional success basically means saying, “Good luck in your future endeavors.”

We say, “good luck” so often to simply mean, “I wish you success,” that we have almost forgotten what it actually means. What you are saying when you say “good luck” to someone is that you hope that fortune will look favorably upon them.

To use an analogy, you’re saying that you hope that when they drive up to a stop light, it turns green. Basically, you’re expressing the hope that the things that chance dictates turn out positively, and that this makes achievement easier.

Example: How to use “Good luck in your future endeavors”

I was delighted to hear that you passed your Real Estate exam with flying colors and have received your realtors’ license.

You were a pleasure to have in class. On behalf of everyone at Rutgers Realtors’ Training, I would like to wish you good luck in your future endeavors.

Warm wishes,

Hans Proctor

19. Best wishes for your future endeavors

Saying, “Best wishes for you future endeavors” is a highly versatile way to tell someone that you hope they achieve their professional goals.

You can say it to a colleague whom you are close to, as well as to someone you have collaborated with briefly and have no personal relationship with.

Best wishes is shorthand for “I am sending you my best wishes,” which is what makes this a great way to end an email professionally .

Example:  How to use “best wishes for your future endeavors” in an email

I was delighted to hear that you raised $550,000 in seed funding. Your hard work has paid off…and this is just the beginning.

Thank you for putting such faith in Norfolk West University’s MBA program and for helping to put us on the map.

We are reaching out to congratulate you on behalf of our current students, teaching staff, and administration.

Best wishes for your future endeavors!

Dr. Sharon Croke

20. Good luck on your endeavor

If someone is starting up a new project, you could send them a card or email saying, “good luck on your endeavor.” This is a kind way to tell them that you hope the effort they are currently putting in to setting up a new business or scheme pays off.

If you’re writing to someone at the end of a collaboration, you can wish them, “Good luck on your next endeavor.”

This is a way of marking the end of a project while also expressing that you hope their next professional undertaking is successful.

Example: How to use “good luck on your endeavor” in an email

It was a pleasure collaborating with you to set up Narrow Crypto last September.

Upon hearing that you are setting up a new e-currency trading platform, I wanted to get in touch to reach you good luck on your endeavor.

If your new project requires any app programming, you know where to find us.

Sarah von Bergen

21. I wish you success in all your future endeavors

The phrase, “I wish you success in all your future endeavors” is a fantastic way to wish someone success in general. It is a great alternative to “Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors,” and means more or less the same thing.

This wish is non-specific and not time restricted. You can use it at any point to refer to potential projects the person you’re speaking to will work on at any time in the future.

They don’t even have to know what those endeavors might be for this to be an appropriate phrase to use.

Example: How to use “I wish you success in all your future endeavors” in (business) correspondence

Thank you for your interest in publishing your poem, “Rough Patch” in the Garden Cage Literary Journal .

Unfortunately, your poem was not quite right for us. However, there is much to be commended in your writing and we would welcome submissions from you again for future issues.

I wish you success in all your future endeavors.

Best wishes,

The Editors

22. I wish you all the best for the future

If you want to wish someone the best without specifically talking about the world of work, you can use this more personal gesture of good will to sign off an email.

You can also shorten this alternative to “All the best for the future,” which would work particularly well as a card inscription.

Example: How to use “I wish you all the best for the future” in an email

It has been a pleasure working with you over the last few months. You will be sorely missed by everyone at Vaughn Insurance.

I wish you all the best for the future.

23. Congratulations on your new endeavor

If someone has just launched a new project, start-up, business, or initiative, you can congratulate them using this friendly line.

This makes a wonderful message to write in a card when someone starts a company.

Example: How to use “Congratulations on your new endeavor” in an email

You deserve all the success in the world. You’ve worked so hard to get here and I am so proud of you.

Congratulations on your new endeavor!

24. All the best in your future undertakings

You can also say, “All the best for your future undertakings” or “All the best with your future undertakings.” Both alternatives work well.

As with many of the other alternatives suggested in this list, you can use this line to close off an email to a collaborator once your shared endeavor has ended.

It has been fantastic working with you over the course of the last few months.

I’m sure we will work together again. In the meantime, all the best in your future undertakings!

Should it be “in” or “on” your future endeavors?

Did you get as far as “All the best…” and then pause and watch your curser appear and disappear repeatedly on the screen because you weren’t sure whether it should be, “on” or “in” your future endeavors?

If so, you aren’t alone. And the fact that you’ve looked it up just means you are a thorough person who pays close attention to detail, which is positive.

Here is the answer: It should be “in.” You can also use, “for” or “with.”

Here is a quick guide on how to wish someone the best in their future endeavors:

  • You congratulate someone “on” an endeavor.
  • You wish someone the best “for” or “with” or “in” an endeavor.
  • You wish someone good luck “for” or “in” or “with” an endeavor.

The difference between “endeavors” and “endeavours”

If you’ve seen the phrase as both “Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors” and “Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours,” you might be confused.

Which one is correct?

Well, the simple answer is that they both are! The (slightly) more complicated explanation is that “endeavors” is the American spelling, while “endeavours” is the British spelling.

Make sure you use the correct spelling for the regional dialect of English you are using.

Congratulations Messages For New Job

It’s so fun to share in our loved ones’ happy times — and a new job is no exception! Whether you want to wish a co-worker luck on a new endeavor or congratulate a friend on their newfound employment, we’ll help you with different ways on how to congratulate someone for a new job.

Acknowledging that someone’s landed a new job doesn’t have to  feel  like a job; we’ll make it easy for you!

Congratulations

This is probably the most obvious theme to include in a congratulation message for a new job, and there are lots of different ways to say it. We like pairing a simple congratulation with a little joke or some kind words about the card recipient, like this:

Congratulations + Kindness

To a friend or family member.

  • It makes me so happy to watch you chase your dreams (and catch them)! Congratulations on your new job!
  • Is it dorky to say I’m proud of you? Because I totally am. Congratulations!
  • All your hard work has paid off. Congratulations on your new job!
  • I’m so happy to hear about your new job — you deserve it! Congrats!

To a Co-Worker

  • You did great things here, and you’ll do great things there. Congratulations!
  • Your new place couldn’t have picked a better person to join them. Congratulations!
  • I’ve really, really loved working with you, and I’m so happy you got the job you worked so hard for. Congratulations!
  • Your work ethic and positive attitude have been an asset to this team and will take you far in your new venture. Congratulations!

Congratulations + Humor

  • Congratulations on your new job! Now you can buy me lots of awesome stuff! (Get yourself something pretty, too.)
  • You got a new job! So, drinks are on you next time, right? Congrats!
  • Hellz yes. Congratulations on the new job!
  • Congratulations on getting the hell outta here!
  • Congrats on the new job! Good luck finding co-workers as weird as us.
  • Way to go! Looks like you’ll be goofing off at a much more impressive job from now on.

You obviously want your friend or co-worker to totally rock their new job, and here are a few ways to tell them this:

  • Best of luck to you in your new job!
  • Good luck to a good friend!
  • With skills like yours, you don’t need luck — but good luck in your new job, anyway!
  • Good luck in your new venture!
  • I’m wishing you lots of success and happiness in your new job. Best of luck to you!

I’ll Miss You

Okay, so you’re happy for your co-worker, but you’re also kinda bummed they won’t be working with you anymore? We have just the right words for that. Here ya go!

  • Now  who am I supposed to ‘not-work’ at work with?! I’m gonna miss you!
  • This place won’t be the same without you. Your new co-workers are so lucky!
  • It’s hard to see you go, but I can’t wait for you to start your next adventure.
  • Well, looks like I’m going to be the only normal person around here now. I’ll miss you!
  • I’m so happy and so sad at the same time! Good-bye and good luck!

Dear Damian, It’s going to be hard to say goodbye, but I know this is the right move for you. May success follow you wherever you go . Yours, Toni Marsh

7. Best Wishes for the Future

We recommend using “best wishes for the future” to keep things more simple.

It’s a good choice for something more friendly and impersonal . So, it tends to work when saying goodbye to an employee you might not know well.

Even if you don’t know an employee well, it’s best to keep a positive and civil relationship with them.

That’s where a phrase like this thrives, as it implies you’re not all that close but you wish them the best.

We also recommend reviewing this example:

Dear Dean, I want to wish you the best wishes for the future . I’m sure you’ll find something that’s better for you. Yours, Scott Bradshaw

8. I Wish You All the Best in Your Upcoming Endeavors

Next, try “I wish you all the best in your upcoming endeavors.” Even if you don’t know exactly what someone’s plans are, this is a great phrase to use.

Include it when emailing a client . It shows that you’re following their work life closely and can’t wait to see what else they get up to (even if they’re moving away from your company).

Here’s a great example to help you understand it better:

Dear Mr. Kong, I wish you all the best in your upcoming endeavors . It sounds like this was the right move for you. My best, Greta Kingston

9. Good Luck on Your Journey to New Opportunities

Another way to say “good luck in your future endeavors” is “good luck on your journey to new opportunities.”

This is a positive and hopeful phrase. It works well when encouraging former colleagues who might be looking to find new jobs and roles to take on.

Generally, it’ll feel a recipient with hope. It’ll show them that you care and want them to succeed, regardless of what comes next in their life.

Feel free to also review the following email example:

Dear Jade, Good luck on your journey to new opportunities ! Let me know what you discover when you go searching. Yours, Ross Johnson

10. I Hope You Find Something That Suits You

You can also use “I hope you find something that suits you.” This one is more personal and sincere .

It shows that you’re invested in someone’s future and hope they find something that works for them.

Generally, this works best when saying goodbye to a coworker . It shows you have a closer connection with them and know they’re looking for something that suits them better.

Here is a great email sample to show you how to use it if you still need help:

Dear Thomas, I’m going to miss you when you leave. However, I hope you find something that suits you when you search for new ventures. All the best, Jade Lillian

8 Better Ways To Say “All The Best For Your Future”

When someone is leaving our place of work, or we won’t see them again, it might be time to come up with a useful farewell phrase. “ All the best for your future” works well, but there are better alternatives. This article will explore the best ones to help you.

What Can I Say Instead Of “All The Best For Your Future”?

We can use a few great options in place of “all the best for your future.” Some of the ones we want to go over are:

  • Best of luck in the future
  • Here’s to your future successes
  • I hope you get where you want to go
  • I wish you the best in all that you do
  • I wish you nothing but success
  • I hope your future brings you plenty of joy and happiness
  • All the best for what’s to come
  • Good luck with the next chapter of your life

better ways to say all the best for your future

The preferred version is “best of luck in the future.” It’s simple and gets the point across straight away. We use it to wish somebody “luck” for whatever comes next in their life. It shows that we care about them formally, and it is a kind way to say goodbye.

Best Of Luck In The Future

“Best of luck in the future” works when we don’t know exactly what’s coming for someone in the future. We can use it whenever someone moves on to more important things in their lives. If they haven’t been specific with where they’re going, “the future” works as a general phrase.

We could use this phrase well whenever someone has chosen to leave their current place of work. It’s mostly reserved for colleagues and other workmates since they won’t have much of an idea of how things go once you have left your former place of employment.

We could use this phrase in the following ways:

  • Best of luck in the future, my dear. I hope you’ll come back to see us once you’ve settled into your new place.
  • I wish you the best of luck in the future. You deserve the happiness that this new job will certainly provide.
  • Best of luck to you in the future. You’re going to do absolutely wonderful things, I can tell.

Here’s To Your Future Successes

“Here’s to your future successes” shows that we believe in the potential of someone when they leave. We want to show that we believe they will amount to great things as long as they apply themselves. It’s a kind way to part ways with a former colleague .

This is a great phrase that works when we know that people have potential in life. Again, though, it works well when talking to former colleagues since it’s not likely that we’ll be speaking to them again.

When someone is leaving, this is a great way to say goodbye, as you will see:

  • Here’s to your future successes. Of which, I have no doubt there will be thousands!
  • Here’s to your future successes, Matthew! You will be sorely missed around here.
  • I believe in you, and I always will do. Here’s to your future successes, my boy.

I Hope You Get Where You Want To Go

“I hope you get where you want to go” works when you have an idea of what someone is going to achieve. It’s effective when that person has made it clear they didn’t like working in their current place of employment, and you wish them well on their new journey.

If we know that people have struggled at work sometimes, then this phrase could be a useful one for us. It shows that we’ve understood their previous difficulties and issues, and we hope that whatever new venture they go for won’t be as challenging for them.

These examples are a great way to show you how it works:

  • I hope you get where you want to go. I know you’ve found the journey up till now to be difficult.
  • Times have been hard, but they’re about to change for you. I hope you get where you want to go.
  • I hope you get where you want to go! You absolutely deserve it.

I Wish You The Best In All That You Do

“I wish you the best in all that you do” again works well when you have an idea of what someone wants to do. It’s helpful because it shows that we care enough to wish them the best, and we hope that whatever they choose to do, they will be successful.

Keeping things simple is sometimes the most appropriate way to say goodbye to colleagues. It also works well if you’re a boss who wants to say goodbye to an employee who you know has great potential in life.

Here are a few ways we can use this phrase:

  • Here’s to you! I wish you the best in all that you do. I know you’ll be a great doctor.
  • I wish you the best in all that you do. Not that you’ll need it; you’re one of the smartest girls I know!
  • Okay, I wish you the best in all that you do! I hope you come back to visit sometimes, though.

I Wish You Nothing But Success

“I wish you nothing but success” is a useful general phrase. It works when we don’t know what they’re leaving to go and do, but we still wish them luck. Whether they have yet to decide on their new career or they haven’t told us, this phrase works wonders.

Remember, most of these phrases are simple ways to say goodbye to your colleagues. The implication is always that you won’t see them again (or if you do, it won’t be for long). Typically, we will not use these kinds of phrases for friends or family members.

There are plenty of ways we can use this, as the following will demonstrate:

  • I’ll be seeing you then! I wish you nothing but success in your future adventures.
  • I wish you nothing but success! Knock them dead when you get out on that stage, okay?!
  • I’m going to miss working with you. I wish you nothing but genuine success.

I Hope Your Future Brings You Plenty Of Joy And Happiness

“I hope your future brings you plenty of” is the start to any phrase when we want people to do well in their futures. “Joy and happiness” is just one example that works, but you can use any positive adjective to wish somebody well in whatever they do next.

The important thing to remember here is the use of the adjective. We can say almost anything we want to after “plenty of.” Whatever comes to mind first is most likely going to be the most impactful and kind thing you can give to a former colleague.

These examples will show you how to use it best:

  • I hope your future brings you plenty of joy and happiness. You truly deserve it.
  • I hope your future brings you plenty of great things. Of everyone here, you deserve it most.
  • I hope your future brings you plenty of excitement and wonder. I’m going to miss you around the office, though.

All The Best For What’s To Come

“All the best for what’s to come” is a simpler phrase we use when we want to wish someone luck. It helps when we know that they’re moving on to potentially bigger and better things. Again, it works well when we know they weren’t particularly happy at their current job.

Going back to basics is sometimes the best way to address someone. In this phrase, we drop “I wish you” from the start of the phrase to keep it short and sweet. The original “I wish you” phrase is still implied, but we do not need it for the sentence to be correct.

Here are some ways you can make it work:

  • (I wish you) All the best for what’s to come. You must stay in touch to let us know how you get on!
  • (I wish you) All the best for what’s to come. Don’t be a stranger, and come to visit.
  • (I wish you) All the best for what is to come. I know you’ll do well in your new endeavors.

Good Luck With The Next Chapter Of Your Life

“Good luck with the next chapter of your life” works when we know they have a job or plan lined up. The “next chapter” refers to that job or plan without thinking about whatever comes after it. We use it to wish them well for that specific moment in time.

Here are some examples of it in use:

  • I’m definitely going to miss you, but good luck with the next chapter of your life.
  • Good luck with the next chapter of your life! I know that when you apply yourself, you’re going to achieve some fantastic things.
  • Good luck with the next chapter of your life. If only I could be taking this dive with you!

Understanding Assignments

What this handout is about.

The first step in any successful college writing venture is reading the assignment. While this sounds like a simple task, it can be a tough one. This handout will help you unravel your assignment and begin to craft an effective response. Much of the following advice will involve translating typical assignment terms and practices into meaningful clues to the type of writing your instructor expects. See our short video for more tips.

Basic beginnings

Regardless of the assignment, department, or instructor, adopting these two habits will serve you well :

  • Read the assignment carefully as soon as you receive it. Do not put this task off—reading the assignment at the beginning will save you time, stress, and problems later. An assignment can look pretty straightforward at first, particularly if the instructor has provided lots of information. That does not mean it will not take time and effort to complete; you may even have to learn a new skill to complete the assignment.
  • Ask the instructor about anything you do not understand. Do not hesitate to approach your instructor. Instructors would prefer to set you straight before you hand the paper in. That’s also when you will find their feedback most useful.

Assignment formats

Many assignments follow a basic format. Assignments often begin with an overview of the topic, include a central verb or verbs that describe the task, and offer some additional suggestions, questions, or prompts to get you started.

An Overview of Some Kind

The instructor might set the stage with some general discussion of the subject of the assignment, introduce the topic, or remind you of something pertinent that you have discussed in class. For example:

“Throughout history, gerbils have played a key role in politics,” or “In the last few weeks of class, we have focused on the evening wear of the housefly …”

The Task of the Assignment

Pay attention; this part tells you what to do when you write the paper. Look for the key verb or verbs in the sentence. Words like analyze, summarize, or compare direct you to think about your topic in a certain way. Also pay attention to words such as how, what, when, where, and why; these words guide your attention toward specific information. (See the section in this handout titled “Key Terms” for more information.)

“Analyze the effect that gerbils had on the Russian Revolution”, or “Suggest an interpretation of housefly undergarments that differs from Darwin’s.”

Additional Material to Think about

Here you will find some questions to use as springboards as you begin to think about the topic. Instructors usually include these questions as suggestions rather than requirements. Do not feel compelled to answer every question unless the instructor asks you to do so. Pay attention to the order of the questions. Sometimes they suggest the thinking process your instructor imagines you will need to follow to begin thinking about the topic.

“You may wish to consider the differing views held by Communist gerbils vs. Monarchist gerbils, or Can there be such a thing as ‘the housefly garment industry’ or is it just a home-based craft?”

These are the instructor’s comments about writing expectations:

“Be concise”, “Write effectively”, or “Argue furiously.”

Technical Details

These instructions usually indicate format rules or guidelines.

“Your paper must be typed in Palatino font on gray paper and must not exceed 600 pages. It is due on the anniversary of Mao Tse-tung’s death.”

The assignment’s parts may not appear in exactly this order, and each part may be very long or really short. Nonetheless, being aware of this standard pattern can help you understand what your instructor wants you to do.

Interpreting the assignment

Ask yourself a few basic questions as you read and jot down the answers on the assignment sheet:

Why did your instructor ask you to do this particular task?

Who is your audience.

  • What kind of evidence do you need to support your ideas?

What kind of writing style is acceptable?

  • What are the absolute rules of the paper?

Try to look at the question from the point of view of the instructor. Recognize that your instructor has a reason for giving you this assignment and for giving it to you at a particular point in the semester. In every assignment, the instructor has a challenge for you. This challenge could be anything from demonstrating an ability to think clearly to demonstrating an ability to use the library. See the assignment not as a vague suggestion of what to do but as an opportunity to show that you can handle the course material as directed. Paper assignments give you more than a topic to discuss—they ask you to do something with the topic. Keep reminding yourself of that. Be careful to avoid the other extreme as well: do not read more into the assignment than what is there.

Of course, your instructor has given you an assignment so that he or she will be able to assess your understanding of the course material and give you an appropriate grade. But there is more to it than that. Your instructor has tried to design a learning experience of some kind. Your instructor wants you to think about something in a particular way for a particular reason. If you read the course description at the beginning of your syllabus, review the assigned readings, and consider the assignment itself, you may begin to see the plan, purpose, or approach to the subject matter that your instructor has created for you. If you still aren’t sure of the assignment’s goals, try asking the instructor. For help with this, see our handout on getting feedback .

Given your instructor’s efforts, it helps to answer the question: What is my purpose in completing this assignment? Is it to gather research from a variety of outside sources and present a coherent picture? Is it to take material I have been learning in class and apply it to a new situation? Is it to prove a point one way or another? Key words from the assignment can help you figure this out. Look for key terms in the form of active verbs that tell you what to do.

Key Terms: Finding Those Active Verbs

Here are some common key words and definitions to help you think about assignment terms:

Information words Ask you to demonstrate what you know about the subject, such as who, what, when, where, how, and why.

  • define —give the subject’s meaning (according to someone or something). Sometimes you have to give more than one view on the subject’s meaning
  • describe —provide details about the subject by answering question words (such as who, what, when, where, how, and why); you might also give details related to the five senses (what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell)
  • explain —give reasons why or examples of how something happened
  • illustrate —give descriptive examples of the subject and show how each is connected with the subject
  • summarize —briefly list the important ideas you learned about the subject
  • trace —outline how something has changed or developed from an earlier time to its current form
  • research —gather material from outside sources about the subject, often with the implication or requirement that you will analyze what you have found

Relation words Ask you to demonstrate how things are connected.

  • compare —show how two or more things are similar (and, sometimes, different)
  • contrast —show how two or more things are dissimilar
  • apply—use details that you’ve been given to demonstrate how an idea, theory, or concept works in a particular situation
  • cause —show how one event or series of events made something else happen
  • relate —show or describe the connections between things

Interpretation words Ask you to defend ideas of your own about the subject. Do not see these words as requesting opinion alone (unless the assignment specifically says so), but as requiring opinion that is supported by concrete evidence. Remember examples, principles, definitions, or concepts from class or research and use them in your interpretation.

  • assess —summarize your opinion of the subject and measure it against something
  • prove, justify —give reasons or examples to demonstrate how or why something is the truth
  • evaluate, respond —state your opinion of the subject as good, bad, or some combination of the two, with examples and reasons
  • support —give reasons or evidence for something you believe (be sure to state clearly what it is that you believe)
  • synthesize —put two or more things together that have not been put together in class or in your readings before; do not just summarize one and then the other and say that they are similar or different—you must provide a reason for putting them together that runs all the way through the paper
  • analyze —determine how individual parts create or relate to the whole, figure out how something works, what it might mean, or why it is important
  • argue —take a side and defend it with evidence against the other side

More Clues to Your Purpose As you read the assignment, think about what the teacher does in class:

  • What kinds of textbooks or coursepack did your instructor choose for the course—ones that provide background information, explain theories or perspectives, or argue a point of view?
  • In lecture, does your instructor ask your opinion, try to prove her point of view, or use keywords that show up again in the assignment?
  • What kinds of assignments are typical in this discipline? Social science classes often expect more research. Humanities classes thrive on interpretation and analysis.
  • How do the assignments, readings, and lectures work together in the course? Instructors spend time designing courses, sometimes even arguing with their peers about the most effective course materials. Figuring out the overall design to the course will help you understand what each assignment is meant to achieve.

Now, what about your reader? Most undergraduates think of their audience as the instructor. True, your instructor is a good person to keep in mind as you write. But for the purposes of a good paper, think of your audience as someone like your roommate: smart enough to understand a clear, logical argument, but not someone who already knows exactly what is going on in your particular paper. Remember, even if the instructor knows everything there is to know about your paper topic, he or she still has to read your paper and assess your understanding. In other words, teach the material to your reader.

Aiming a paper at your audience happens in two ways: you make decisions about the tone and the level of information you want to convey.

  • Tone means the “voice” of your paper. Should you be chatty, formal, or objective? Usually you will find some happy medium—you do not want to alienate your reader by sounding condescending or superior, but you do not want to, um, like, totally wig on the man, you know? Eschew ostentatious erudition: some students think the way to sound academic is to use big words. Be careful—you can sound ridiculous, especially if you use the wrong big words.
  • The level of information you use depends on who you think your audience is. If you imagine your audience as your instructor and she already knows everything you have to say, you may find yourself leaving out key information that can cause your argument to be unconvincing and illogical. But you do not have to explain every single word or issue. If you are telling your roommate what happened on your favorite science fiction TV show last night, you do not say, “First a dark-haired white man of average height, wearing a suit and carrying a flashlight, walked into the room. Then a purple alien with fifteen arms and at least three eyes turned around. Then the man smiled slightly. In the background, you could hear a clock ticking. The room was fairly dark and had at least two windows that I saw.” You also do not say, “This guy found some aliens. The end.” Find some balance of useful details that support your main point.

You’ll find a much more detailed discussion of these concepts in our handout on audience .

The Grim Truth

With a few exceptions (including some lab and ethnography reports), you are probably being asked to make an argument. You must convince your audience. It is easy to forget this aim when you are researching and writing; as you become involved in your subject matter, you may become enmeshed in the details and focus on learning or simply telling the information you have found. You need to do more than just repeat what you have read. Your writing should have a point, and you should be able to say it in a sentence. Sometimes instructors call this sentence a “thesis” or a “claim.”

So, if your instructor tells you to write about some aspect of oral hygiene, you do not want to just list: “First, you brush your teeth with a soft brush and some peanut butter. Then, you floss with unwaxed, bologna-flavored string. Finally, gargle with bourbon.” Instead, you could say, “Of all the oral cleaning methods, sandblasting removes the most plaque. Therefore it should be recommended by the American Dental Association.” Or, “From an aesthetic perspective, moldy teeth can be quite charming. However, their joys are short-lived.”

Convincing the reader of your argument is the goal of academic writing. It doesn’t have to say “argument” anywhere in the assignment for you to need one. Look at the assignment and think about what kind of argument you could make about it instead of just seeing it as a checklist of information you have to present. For help with understanding the role of argument in academic writing, see our handout on argument .

What kind of evidence do you need?

There are many kinds of evidence, and what type of evidence will work for your assignment can depend on several factors–the discipline, the parameters of the assignment, and your instructor’s preference. Should you use statistics? Historical examples? Do you need to conduct your own experiment? Can you rely on personal experience? See our handout on evidence for suggestions on how to use evidence appropriately.

Make sure you are clear about this part of the assignment, because your use of evidence will be crucial in writing a successful paper. You are not just learning how to argue; you are learning how to argue with specific types of materials and ideas. Ask your instructor what counts as acceptable evidence. You can also ask a librarian for help. No matter what kind of evidence you use, be sure to cite it correctly—see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial .

You cannot always tell from the assignment just what sort of writing style your instructor expects. The instructor may be really laid back in class but still expect you to sound formal in writing. Or the instructor may be fairly formal in class and ask you to write a reflection paper where you need to use “I” and speak from your own experience.

Try to avoid false associations of a particular field with a style (“art historians like wacky creativity,” or “political scientists are boring and just give facts”) and look instead to the types of readings you have been given in class. No one expects you to write like Plato—just use the readings as a guide for what is standard or preferable to your instructor. When in doubt, ask your instructor about the level of formality she or he expects.

No matter what field you are writing for or what facts you are including, if you do not write so that your reader can understand your main idea, you have wasted your time. So make clarity your main goal. For specific help with style, see our handout on style .

Technical details about the assignment

The technical information you are given in an assignment always seems like the easy part. This section can actually give you lots of little hints about approaching the task. Find out if elements such as page length and citation format (see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial ) are negotiable. Some professors do not have strong preferences as long as you are consistent and fully answer the assignment. Some professors are very specific and will deduct big points for deviations.

Usually, the page length tells you something important: The instructor thinks the size of the paper is appropriate to the assignment’s parameters. In plain English, your instructor is telling you how many pages it should take for you to answer the question as fully as you are expected to. So if an assignment is two pages long, you cannot pad your paper with examples or reword your main idea several times. Hit your one point early, defend it with the clearest example, and finish quickly. If an assignment is ten pages long, you can be more complex in your main points and examples—and if you can only produce five pages for that assignment, you need to see someone for help—as soon as possible.

Tricks that don’t work

Your instructors are not fooled when you:

  • spend more time on the cover page than the essay —graphics, cool binders, and cute titles are no replacement for a well-written paper.
  • use huge fonts, wide margins, or extra spacing to pad the page length —these tricks are immediately obvious to the eye. Most instructors use the same word processor you do. They know what’s possible. Such tactics are especially damning when the instructor has a stack of 60 papers to grade and yours is the only one that low-flying airplane pilots could read.
  • use a paper from another class that covered “sort of similar” material . Again, the instructor has a particular task for you to fulfill in the assignment that usually relates to course material and lectures. Your other paper may not cover this material, and turning in the same paper for more than one course may constitute an Honor Code violation . Ask the instructor—it can’t hurt.
  • get all wacky and “creative” before you answer the question . Showing that you are able to think beyond the boundaries of a simple assignment can be good, but you must do what the assignment calls for first. Again, check with your instructor. A humorous tone can be refreshing for someone grading a stack of papers, but it will not get you a good grade if you have not fulfilled the task.

Critical reading of assignments leads to skills in other types of reading and writing. If you get good at figuring out what the real goals of assignments are, you are going to be better at understanding the goals of all of your classes and fields of study.

‘I understand the assignment.’ A packed Rupp Arena welcomes new Kentucky coach Mark Pope.

Herald-Leader Staff Report

Kentucky introduces new basketball coach Mark Pope

Click below to read more coverage from the Lexington Herald-Leader and Kentucky.com about the introduction of former UK player Mark Pope as the new Kentucky men’s basketball coach.

New University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach Mark Pope decided there was no time like the present to connect with Big Blue Nation on Sunday afternoon.

As fans lined up eager to get inside for their first live look at the new boss in Kentucky blue, Pope surprised the throng by walking among them on his way inside Rupp Arena for his open-to-the-public introductory news conference.

Amid speculation that Kentucky basketball might be too big for a coach with Pope’s level of experience, the former BYU head man took that challenge head on, showing he’s a “man of the people” on his first day on the job.

With the limelight — and the sunshine — on full blast, Pope high-fived, fist bumped and hugged fans thrilled with their first impression of the head coach.

Once inside, Pope was greeted by a cheering, chanting crowd that filled Rupp Arena to capacity — assembled on a warm spring day for a press conference.

‘Crazy’ Kentucky fans? There you go.

If you’re still waiting outside, probably best to go somewhere and find a TV. Rupp Arena is full. pic.twitter.com/Pdolmo6i2s — Ben Roberts (@BenRobertsHL) April 14, 2024

It was so crazy, in fact, that Pope’s arrival was delayed more than 15 minutes to allow more fans into the arena.

The atmosphere inside, complete with music, scoreboard video, the UK band and live TV coverage, was every bit the match for some of the biggest games played in Kentucky’s basketball palace.

Pope arrived inside Rupp Arena aboard a bus filled with former UK players and others associated with the program through the years.

Pope stepped out of the bus holding up the 1996 national championship trophy, the team for which he was captain.

Tom Leach, radio voice of the Wildcats and emcee for Sunday’s event, welcomed Pope with the words “The captain is now the coach!”

After introductions by athletic director Mitch Barnhart, who presented the new UK coach with a Kentucky jersey, Pope stepped up to the microphone and addressed the fans.

“You’ve all seen these things all the time,” Pope said as he surveyed the crowd. “But nobody in the world has ever seen anything like this.”

Pope then had to pause his remarks as a chant of “Go Big Blue” thundered throughout Rupp Arena.

“Every coach in America comes to these introductory press conferences and tries to manage expectations,” Pope said. “We don’t do that at Kentucky. ...”

“I understand the assignment. We are here to win banners.

“And as we go through this journey. We’re here to win banners in Nashville because you guys turn out in Nashville like nobody else and that matters,” Pope added, in reference to the annual Southeastern Conference Tournament.

“And our job here is to win banners in the Final Four and the national championship. That’s our job.”

Pope also said he embraces the pressure that comes with Kentucky basketball.

“With those high expectations inevitably is going to come criticism,” he said. “But I don’t want you guys to worry. Because I’m on a group chat with every single one of my ‘96 championship teammates. And they will destroy me every time something goes wrong.”

Pope later proceeded to lead the Rupp Arena crowd in an enthusiastic chant of “C-A-T-S, Cats, Cats Cats!”

Pope then introduced his family —wife Lee Ann and daughters Ella, Avery, Layla, and Shay.

“This is 100 percent a true story,” Pope said. “When Mitch offered us the job, he gave us a couple hours to consult as a family. We didn’t need it. He knew I would walk all the way here to take this job. But as we gathered the girls from all their various places, (daughter) Layla Pope walks in the door and, I kid you not, her first words were, because she knows the deal, ‘Tell me who’s in the house tonight, U-K! She did exactly that.”

Pope numerous times during his introductory remarks referenced his reverence for the Kentucky program.

“It is the greatest honor that I will ever have in my professional, or this family, career to be able to come back here and do this with you.” Pope said. “The difference between Kentucky and every other program in the country is that this is not my team. It’s not even our team (pointing at those assembled on the floor). It is OUR team (gesturing to the entire arena).”

Seven ways the 2024 federal budget affects your finances, from selling your cottage to RESPs

all the best in your new assignment

An employee works on a modular home component at NRB Modular Solutions in Calgary on April 5, 2024. Jeff McIntosh/The Canadian Press

The Trudeau government had already announced a slew of affordability initiatives ahead of the release of its 2024 federal budget, but there were also a number of pocketbook measures in the spending plan that Ottawa had mostly kept mum about.

Arguably the biggest surprise was a proposed increase in the capital gain inclusion rate, a change the government says will boost revenues by raising taxes on the wealthy but experts warn could also hit some middle-class taxpayers.

Ottawa also provided a target start date for the much-anticipated Canada Disability Benefit for low-income, working-age Canadians.

Aside from the well-telegraphed array of new housing policies, the budget outlined a smattering of small tax benefits and consumer protection measures, from tweaks to the alternative minimum tax to changes to registered education savings plans (RESPs).

Here are some of the highlights on the key measures that affect Canadians’ bottom lines.

Raising taxes on capital gains

The budget proposes to increase the capital gains inclusion rate for individuals from half to two-thirds for annual profits above $250,000, effective June 25.

A capital gain occurs when someone sells an asset – such as a property or a stock – for a higher price than what they originally paid for it. Currently, only 50 per cent of that profit is included in tax calculations. Half of the capital gain is added to a taxpayer’s annual taxable income and taxed at their marginal tax rate. With the new inclusion rate, two-thirds – or 66.7 per cent – of an individual’s annual capital gain above $250,000 would be taxable.

The government said the measure will boost revenues by raising taxes on a small minority of Canadians with very high incomes. But the higher inclusion rate described in the budget would also hit middle-class Canadians who experience a one-off financial windfall from certain types of asset sales, said John Oakey, vice-president of taxation at Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada.

While the sale of a primary residence is exempt from the capital gains tax, Canadians selling a vacation home or rental property would be subject to the higher inclusion rate for net capital gains above the $250,000 threshold, Mr. Oakey said. The same holds for profit realized on investments held in non-tax-advantaged accounts.

The higher inclusion rate would apply to all capital gains realized by a corporation or trust.

A federal disability benefit

The budget also pledges to start funding the new Canada Disability Benefit. Payments of the federal benefit, which is meant to top up existing financial support for low-income working-age Canadians with disabilities, would starting in July 2025, the government said.

It will provide $2,400 a year to Canadians between the ages of 18 and 64. But eligibility for the benefit will be tied to the Disability Tax Credit, which has been widely criticized for being difficult to access for many Canadians with disabilities.

It’s also unclear whether the provinces and territories will heed Ottawa’s calls not to claw back assistance for those who’ll receive the new federal benefit.

Housing affordability

Among the widely publicized measures is the introduction of 30-year amortization periods on mortgages for first-time homebuyers who have a down payment of less than 20 per cent and want to purchase a newly built home.

Ottawa is also proposing to increase the amount first-time buyers can withdraw from an RRSP through the Home Buyers’ Plan from $35,000 to $60,000 and temporarily extend the grace period homeowners enjoy before they have to start putting money back into their retirement savings accounts.

The budget also proposes automatically opening an RESP for eligible children born in 2024 and later years starting in fiscal year 2029. This will ensure an additional 130,000 children will receive up to $2,000 through the Canada Learning Bond, which helps low-income families save for postsecondary education.

While the aid isn’t tied to contributions, families must have an account open to receive the funding.

Tweaks to the alternative minimum tax

The budget includes a new round of proposed tweaks to the alternative minimum tax, which is meant to ensure that wealthy tax filers are subject to a certain minimum tax rate, no matter how many credits and deductions they can claim.

The Trudeau government’s efforts to tighten the AMT had stoked concerns that the new rules would discourage charitable donations from high net-worth donors. Under the new rules, individuals would be allowed to claim 80 per cent (instead of the previously proposed 50 per cent) of the Charitable Donation Tax Credit when calculating the AMT, among other changes.

Switching internet and phone plans

Ottawa is proposing to bar carriers from charging extra fees when consumers switch their internet or phone plans to a competitor.

Capping non-sufficient funds fees

The government also wants to apply a cap of $10 to non-sufficient funds fees, which are charged when an account holder doesn’t have enough money to cover a cheque or pre-authorized debit transaction.

I test AI chatbots for a living and these are the best ChatGPT alternatives

Claude 3, Gemini and more all impress

Copilot, Gemini, Claude

  • Best overall: Claud 3

Best for Live Data: Google Gemini

Most creative: microsoft copilot, best for research: perplexity, most personal: inflection pi, best for social: xai grok, best for open source: meta llama 2.

Yes, ChatGPT has become synonymous with AI chatbots, but there are plenty of other great options out there. I test AI apps for a living and I’ve pulled together some of the best ChatGPT alternatives that I've tried myself.

Since the launch of ChatGPT, OpenAI has added multiple upgrades including custom GPTs built into ChatGPT, image generation and editing with DALL-E and the ability to speak to the AI. You can even use it without an account .

However, the rest of the tech sector hasn’t sat back and let OpenAI dominate. Some of its competitors equal or exceed the abilities of ChatGPT and others offer features it doesn’t. From Claude and Google Gemini to Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity , these are the best ChatGPT alternatives right now.

Best Overall: Anthropic Claud 3

Claude 3

Claude 3 is the most human chatbot I’ve ever interacted with . Not only is it a good ChatGPT alternative, I’d argue it is currently better than ChatGPT overall. It has better reasoning and persuasion and isn’t as lazy. It will create a full app or write an entire story.

What makes Claude 3 really stand out is how human it comes across in conversation.

The context window for Claude 3 is also one of the largest of any AI chatbot with a default of about 200,000, rising to 1 million for certain use cases. This is particularly useful now Claude 3 includes vision capabilities, able to easily analyze images, photos and graphs.

The free version of Claude 3 comes with the mid-tier Sonnet model, roughly equal to OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 or Google’s Gemini Pro. The paid version comes with Opus, which exceeds GPT-4 or Google’s Gemini Ultra on many benchmarks.

Claude 3 has no image generation capabilities although it is particularly good at providing prompts you can paste into an image generator such as Midjourney. It is also better at coding than some of the other models.

Pricing: Claude 3 costs $20 a month for the Plus version with Opus. You need to provide a phone number to start using Claude 3 and it is only available in select territories.

Google Gemini

Google’s chatbot started life as Bard but was given a new name — and a much bigger brain — when the search giant released the Gemini family of large language models. It is a good all-around chatbot with a friendly turn of phrase. It is also one of the most cautious and tightly moderated .

Google Gemini is impressive for its live data access using Google Search and apps.

Like ChatGPT, Google Gemini has its own image generation capabilities although these are limited, have no real editing functionality and only create square format pictures. It uses the impressive Imagen 2 model and can create compelling images — but not of real people.

Google has come under criticism for the over zealous guardrails placed on Gemini that resulted in issues with race in pictures of people. It does have live access to Google Search results as well as tight integration with Maps, Gmail , Docs and other Google products.

The free version uses the Gemini Pro 1.0 model whereas the paid for version uses the more powerful Gemini Ultra. There is also a new Gemini 1.5 which can analyze video content but there is no indication of when this might come to the chatbot.

Pricing: Gemini Advanced is the paid for version and is available for $19.99 bundled with the Gemini One subscription service. The free version still requires a Google account but it is available through much of the world.

ChatGPT

Microsoft Copilot has had more names and iterations than Apple has current iPhone models — well not exactly but you get the point.

Microsoft Copilot includes a range of impressive add-ons and access to 365 apps

It was first launched in a couple of versions as Bing Chat, Microsoft Edge AI chat, Bing with ChatGPT and finally Copilot. Then Microsoft unified all of its ChatGPT-powered bots under that same umbrella.

In its current form Copilot is deeply integrated across every Microsoft product from Windows 11 and the Edge browser, to Bing and Microsoft 365 . Copilot is also in enterprise tools. While it is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4-Turbo, Copilot is still very much a Microsoft product.

Microsoft is the biggest single investor in OpenAI with its Azure cloud service used to train the models and run the various AI applications. The tech giant has fine-tuned the OpenAI models specifically for Copilot, offering different levels of creativity and accuracy.

Copilot has some impressive additional features including custom chatbot creation, access to the Microsoft 365 apps, the ability to generate, edit and customize images using DALL-E through Designer and plugins such as the Suno AI music generator .

Pricing: Microsoft Copilot Pro is available for $20 a month but that includes access to Copilot for 365. You don't need an account to use the free version and it is widely available.

Perplexity

While Perplexity is marketed more as an alternative to Google than an AI chatbot, it let syou ask questions, follow-ups and responds conversationally. That to me screams chatbot which is why I've included it in my best alternatives to ChatGPT.

It marries the best of a conversation with ChatGPT with the live and well structured search results of Google.

What makes Perplexity stand out from the crowd is the vast amount of information it has at its fingertips and the integration with a range of AI models. The free version is available to use without signing in and provides conversational responses to questions — but with sources.

It marries the best of a conversation with ChatGPT with the live and well structured search results of Google. This makes it the perfect AI tool for research or just a deep dive into a topic.

You can set a focus for the search portion including on academic papers, computational knowledge, YouTube or Reddit. You can also disable web search and just use it like ChatGPT.

Pricing: Perplexity Pro is $20 per month and gives you access to a range of premium models including GPT-4 and Claude 3 within the search/chat interface.

Pi AI

Pi from Inflection AI is my favorite large language model to talk to. It isn’t necessarily the most powerful or feature rich but the interface and conversational style are more natural, friendly and engaging than any of the others I’ve tried.

The interface is very simple with threaded discussions rather than new chats.

Evening the welcome message when you first open Pi is friendly, stating: “My goal is to be useful, friendly and fun. Ask me for advice, for answers, or let’s talk about whatever’s on your mind.” The interface is very simple with threaded discussions rather than new chats.

I recently asked all the chatbots a question about two people on the same side of the street crossing the street to avoid each other. Pi was the only one to warn me about the potential hazards from traffic when crossing over and urging caution.

Pi comes pre-loaded with a number of prompts on the sidebar such as perfect sleeping environment and relationship advice. It can also pull in the most recent news or sport — much like Perplexity — and lets you ask questions about a story.

Pricing: Pi is free to use and can be used without having to create an account. It also has a voice feature for reading messages out loud.

xAI Grok

Elon Musk’s Grok is almost the anti-Pi. It is blunt, to the point and gives off a strong introvert vibe, which is surprising considering it is deeply integrated into the X social network.

Its guardrails are less tightly wound than others.

Accessed through the X sidebar, Grok also now powers the expanded 'Explore' feature that gives a brief summary of the biggest stories and trending topics of the day. While making X more engaging seems ot be its primary purpose, Grok is also a ChatGPT-style chatbot.

Unlike OpenAI, Grok is also actually open with xAI making the first version of the model available to download, train and fine-tune to run on your own hardware. The big differentiator for Grok is what Elon Musk calls “free speech”. Its guardrails are less tightly wound than others.

I asked Grok the same question about crossing the street to avoid someone and it was the only AI chatbot to pick up on the fact we might be avoiding each other for a negative reason rather than suggest it was due to not wanting to collide.

Pricing: Grok is now available with an X Premium account. It previously required Premium+. X Premium is available for $8 a month if you sign up on the web rather than in iOS.

Llama 2 on Groq

Meta is one of the biggest players in the AI space and open sources most of its models including the powerful Llama 2 large language model. It will also open source Llama 3 when it comes online this summer. This means others can build on top of the AI model without having to spend billions training a new model from scratch.

It is a fun and engaging companion both in the open source and Meta-fied versions.

Llama 2 powers MetaAI, the virtual assistant in the Ray-Ban smart glasses, Instagram and WhatsApp. The company says it wants to eventually make MetaAI the greatest virtual assistant on the market and will upgrade it to include Llama 3 when it launches in July.

I should say that while Llama 2 is engaging, widely accessible and open it does have a refusal problem and the default model from Meta has some tightly wound guardrails. The company says this will be solved with Llama 3.

Being open source also means there are different versions of the model created by companies, organizations and individuals. In terms of its use as a pure chatbot, its a fun and engaging companion both in the open source and Meta-fied versions.

Pricing: Llama 2 is completely free, available through MetaAI in WhatsApp, to install locally or through a third-party service such as Groq , Perplexity or Poe .

RimWorld’s new horror expansion also happens to be its best

Anomaly changes up the game’s rhythm — and I love it

Share All sharing options for: RimWorld’s new horror expansion also happens to be its best

A RimWorld settlement plunged into unnatural darkness. Shady shadow creatures are attacking the colonists.

In RimWorld , you play as crash-landed survivors who have to eke out a new existence on a hostile planet, surviving and perhaps thriving between raider attacks, AI uprisings, and swarms of hostile insects. The game has a handful of expansions with new events, and the latest, Anomaly , is the scariest one yet . If you only have the spare scratch to pick up one RimWorld expansion, Anomaly is by far your best choice.

RimWorld is a game about rolling with the punches , which are doled out by the game’s storyteller, who manages the rate at which random events occur. For example, Phoebe Chillax trends toward the Stardew Valley side of the game, allowing the player to build farms, stockpile foods, and focus on the colonists’ day-to-day lives. Cassandra Classic, meanwhile, slowly ramps up the tension with escalating events, only pausing after particularly tough encounters.

A tough colonist might be able to fend off a raider attack only to get a deadly infection. I might stumble upon a temple full of riches only for it to be full of killer robots. A prison warden will get so mad over his girlfriend saying no to a proposal that he punches a turret until it explodes, killing him instantly. It’s this inevitable tragedy that makes RimWorld so compelling.

The game’s other expansions are Ideology , Royalty , and Biotech , each of which adds new ways to build up your colony and alter your colonists. Having to follow a set of religious tenets in Ideology makes for a fascinating social challenge, and I always have fun creating new genetic templates for my colonists in Biotech . But none of the expansions feel like they dramatically change the cadence of the game. I always just build up my base and wait for bots, bugs, or bullies to assault me. Once I win that battle, I put out all the fires (both physical and metaphorical) from the aftermath and build back up — rinse and repeat. It’s certainly fun, but on a long timeline, it makes the game feel a little stale.

A laboratory in RimWorld, showing containment cells built to lock in dangerous monsters and cryptids from the Anomaly expansion pack.

Enter Anomaly , an expansion inspired by The Thing , The Cabin in the Woods , and other horror media. New settlements are always filled with ruins and resources, but now there’s a new feature: an ominous monolith. Attuning a colonist to the monolith triggers Anomaly events. This includes new enemies, of course, like stealthy shadow figures and giant slugs that can gobble down my poor settlers in one gulp. If I want to overcome these new challenges, I need to build containment fields, capture these baddies, and then study them for new technologies and rituals.

As anyone who has ever watched a single horror movie knows, this is a situation that’s absolutely ripe to go wrong. But there are tons of new, non-monster-related events that dramatically change the game and force me to play in a whole new way. I control the escalation of events by studying the monolith; the more I poke at it, the bigger a problem it becomes. This means I can’t get too overwhelmed by new events, and I have to take my time studying test subjects and preparing for the next step of escalation.

Take, for instance, the troubling instance of the golden cube. I got a call from a trusted ally asking me to take something off their hands. They’d even give me a whole bunch of extra supplies and military gear as a thank-you. Perhaps I should’ve been suspicious, but I’m a giver at heart, so I agreed. They sent a cargo pod, and inside was a fist-sized golden cube.

At first, everything was great. My villagers liked to look at it, and it put them in a good mood. I had my lead researcher take a gander at it, but she didn’t see anything alarming at first glance. But things quickly got complicated. My settlement’s cleric began to stop doing her regular duties in favor of wandering around and thinking absentmindedly about the cube. Then, she started building little cube statues from dirt and metal scrap. Finally, she stopped working on things altogether. Other colonists started to join her, and before long, you couldn’t walk a few steps in my settlement without tripping over a cube.

An obelisk in RimWorld’s Anomaly expansion has backfired, creating dozens of clones of one colonist, who is trying to fight them off to no avail.

Afflicted colonists weren’t doing anything productive because they were too focused on the cube. They couldn’t leave the colony, either, or they’d get too upset about leaving the glorious cube behind. By the time my researcher realized there was a way to break the bond, a good chunk of my population was afflicted. Breaking the bond made them all go berserk, and a civil war broke out in my colony between the cube-afflicted and the cube-immune. I lost my cleric and a couple of other guys, but I made sure the funeral was nice.

You would think that’d be the end of my troubles, but shortly after, another faction offered me a nonspecific gift. This time it was a mysterious obelisk that duplicated my best miner, Paul. I now had two identical miners, both of whom claimed to be the real Paul. This seemed like a great resource, and I started harnessing the power to pump out a multitude of Pauls. But then I learned each clone would inevitably get organ failure. Luckily, RimWorld allows you to harvest organs from your enemies, and raiders still occasionally showed up at my base. So I managed to improvise a solution for Pauls’ various failing organs, and all it required was for me to set up a shady harvesting room.

This wild variety of events in Anomaly means that RimWorld feels much more fresh. The other expansions will affect what happens in your downtime, but the regular flow of combat and conflict feels the same. Anomaly adds so many weird and absurd events, and few of them can be boiled down to “a bunch of bad guys are running at your base.” These new forms of conflict can come from within, as a The Thing -style entity takes over your cultists’ bodies, or they can come from below, as a giant pit full of fleshbeasts opens up in the ground. Either way, I love these new and terrible stories that emerge from Anomaly , and it feels essential for shaking up a well-worn RimWorld experience.

RimWorld Anomaly was released on April 11 on Windows PC. The expansion was reviewed on Windows PC on a Steam Deck using a version bought by the writer. Vox Media has affiliate partnerships.
