How to Fix PS4 Proxy Server Error?
So, you’re ready to hop into a Rocket League match on your PS4.
However, you notice that before you launch any game, you need to connect it to the internet.
When you try to do so, the console asks whether or not you use a proxy server .
You select No , but it spins the loop animation and asks the same thing again.
You click No once again but to no avail.
All players stuck in this process ask themselves the same question – Why is мy PS4 asking for a proxy server ?
In this post, I’ll look at all the potential reasons why this never-ending cycle occurs. In addition, I’ll list all common fixes for the problem.
Don’t worry. You’ll be scoring goals with those rocket-powered cars in no time.
What is a Proxy Server on PS4 ?
A proxy server on PS4 acts as an intermediary between the player requesting a resource and the server providing it .
Those who are into IT are already familiar with this computer networking term. For others, this may be the first time encountering proxy servers , and learning more about them is a great place to start.
Proxy servers simplify the complexity of multiple client requests, balancing the network traffic load along the way. They also protect against cyber threats like malware and ensure online anonymity .
Players generally use a proxy server on PS4 to boost their gaming experience.
The console needs high internet speed to provide smooth and lag-free gameplay. Poor connection doesn’t only cause lag, but it sometimes disconnects players in the middle of the game. For many popular titles, this means the player is out of the match, and it counts as a loss.
Achieving good connectivity isn’t always easy. That’s where a proxy server comes into play. Players can get a 99.99% uptime and uninterrupted gaming session by using one.
Using a proxy server on PS4 is also the best way to get the console to a secure connection and circumvent geolocation blocks . This is because PlayStation doesn’t support VPNs directly. Players who want to use one must either set it up on their router or rely on a smart DNS .
A proxy server also hides the player’s IP address and effectively disguises their actual location. The only downside is that it doesn’t encrypt data .
Why is My PS4 Asking for a Proxy Server ?
Now you know how a proxy server helps enhance your gaming experience. However, that doesn’t explain why the device asks for one when you want to connect it to the internet.
Let’s check out the potential reasons:
Internet Connectivity Issues
Quite often, your PS4 wants to use a proxy server because the console isn’t detecting your connection correctly .
This scenario often indicates that there’s something wrong with your network. Perhaps your Wi-Fi has lost internet connectivity.
Unsecure Wi-Fi Connection
Have you ever taken your PS4 on vacation and wanted to play in the hotel? Or do you have a deal with the coffee shop owner that you and your friends can play there?
If that’s the case, and you want to connect to the place’s Wi-Fi network, chances are you won’t be able to do it. That’s because the console will see it as an unsecured Wi-Fi connection. As a result, it’ll ask you to use a proxy for PS4 .
Power Failure
Corrupted data can cause all sorts of problems within a console. This can happen if a file is incorrectly written to a storage device . A common reason behind this is not properly shutting down the device when there’s a power failure.
Hardware Failure
A hardware failure is also likely to cause the PS4 proxy server address error. If you’re getting it, it may indicate that there’s something wrong with your Wi-Fi chip.
Other pieces of hardware that may be defunct are your Wi-Fi router and ethernet cable.
PlayStation Network Ban
Another reason why you may be experiencing the PS4 proxy server error is that you’ve been banned from the PlayStation Network. It’s a good idea to look at the terms of service on the PlayStation website and check if you’ve broken any of them.
Remember that the platform has a near zero-tolerance stance on players owing it money. If your account is empty or you’ve asked your bank to stop all your payments, that could be the problem.
Try the recommendations listed below to solve the proxy server PS4 error.
Check the PSN Status
Checking the PSN (PlayStation Network) status is a great place to start. If PSN is offline, there’s nothing wrong with your device. All you have to do is wait for it to become available again . You can report the problem on the platform’s official website if you want to.
It’s common for players to misdiagnose outages on the PlayStation level as a problem with their network connectivity, creating unnecessary confusion.
Reboot Your PS4
If PSN is up and you still get the proxy server address PS4 error, try rebooting your console. This can sometimes solve the issue if there’s nothing wrong with your hardware or internet connection.
It’s important to fully power down the console and then turn it back on instead of having it enter Rest Mode and waking it up. Only turning it off fully can help in this situation.
If that doesn’t work, it’s a good idea to restart your modem and router as well. Restart both devices and then do the same with your console afterward.
Check Internet Connectivity
Obviously, you need an internet connection if you want the console to go online. Check if your other devices, such as your phone and computer, are connected to the network. If not, it indicates there’s something wrong with your internet connection, and that’s why you see the proxy server for PS4 error.
Move the Console Closer to the Router
The physical distance between the wireless router and the console may also be behind the problem. If you suspect that’s the case, move the console closer to the router .
Keep in mind that obstructions such as walls and reinforced doors can impede the signal.
Check PS4 Network Settings
The next place you can look is under Network Settings on your console. Sometimes, Wi-Fi connectivity problems revolve around the PS4 DNS settings . Try modifying the addresses used with your Wi-Fi network.
Once you do that, reboot the console and check if your PS4 keeps asking for a proxy server .
Look for System Software Updates
Another possible solution is to update your PS4 system software to the latest version. To do that, follow these steps:
- Go to the PS4 home screen
- In Settings , select System Software Update
- If updates are showing, select Next and then Update
- Wait for the updates to download
- Select Downloads and install the updates
- Restart your PS4
Once you complete all six steps, check whether the issue persists.
Try Logging into Your Account from Another Device
If you suspect PlayStation has banned your account, you can try signing into it from your phone or computer browser. If you can do it, it means your account is working, and there’s something wrong with your device or connection.
Contact PSN Support
If your account has been banned, your best shot is to contact PSN support and try to retrieve it. If you succeed, the PlayStation 4 proxy server issue should be resolved.
Similarly, if you have exhausted all other options, you can try talking to PlayStation’s agents and see if they can help.
Factory Reset the PS4
After trying everything and still getting the PlayStation proxy server error, the one last thing you can do is restore the console to its factory settings. Keep in mind that you should only do this as a last resort .
Back up all your data and save your games before attempting it.
Proxy servers can help PS4 players achieve a better, uninterrupted gaming experience and ensure online anonymity .
However, when your console keeps asking whether or not you use one no matter your response, it indicates something’s wrong.
The proxy server error can be extremely frustrating, and many players struggle to identify the right fix.
Give all solutions listed in this post a go, and chances are you’ll find your way around the problem.
Once you do, it’s time for your gaming session to finally start.
Do you need to use a proxy server on PS4?
You don’t have to use a proxy server on PlayStation 4 . If the console keeps asking for one while connecting to your network, it usually indicates something’s wrong with your device or network.
What does a proxy server do on PS4?
A proxy server helps you improve your connection speed, stay anonymous online, and ensure you won’t get disconnected during gaming sessions.
How do I make my PS4 connection better?
Connecting to a proxy server is a great way to improve your connection. It can reduce lag and lower the risks of disconnecting. You can learn more about it in my comprehensive Why is My PS4 Asking for a Proxy Server post.

Here it is 01/11/19 and the above mentioned steps didn’t work for mine. And its brand new just came in the mail yesterday. It was shipped with 6.0.2 and the steps above didn’t work. Updated it to 6.2.0 and nothing yet again. Same error every time regardless of if I try wifi or lan
Still can’t connect to the internet after trying all of these steps.

have you tried other networks?
You’re a genius (Y) thank you
Always there to help 🙂
I did all these steps and it still won’t connect. I can’t use a lan cable because it’s a family wifi router and my mam usually works from home. My internet works on my phone and laptop and all the other devices in the house but not the ps4. And yes I did check for any new updates for games and the system. 1/2/19
you tried using mobile hotspot too? If that’s the case then you should contact your isp and say them to change your ip address if you can do it.
If the above DNS don’t work, one that worked for mine is primary 4.2.2.1 and secondary 4.2.2.6 Haven’t seen those except for one place. It worked and gave me the wifi speeds I needed. The others made my wifi work but only gave me 400kbs on a 400mb internet connection. Lol.
Worked great! Thanks!
Thanks 🙂 glad it helped
An Error Has Occurred: CE-3285-7
try the fixes 🙂
After putting in the password it goes straight to the error of cannot connect within time limit. I get no option to change DNS
did you try manual option while connecting ps4
This doesn’t work on my ps4 and yes I’ve used two different routers at different houses and I just bought the ps4 not too long ago and it never connects to internet neither WiFi or Cable
My error code is NW-31286-4 I believe, but I tried everything. It just won’t work
Contact your isp for new ip 🙂
Came online and ps4 got the endless proxy loop despite nothing changing on my network. Set the DNS numbers suggest. Not only did it work, but I went from NAT type 3 to type 2. You’re a good kid.
I have a solution. Most of the time my PS4 Pro won’t identity my Wireless Network. I do following steps: 1)Go to Modem admin section. Mine address is: http://192.10.1.1 2) Go to Security Now here is the trick. Use any method 1) Change your Network SSID name and restart router 2) Enable or Disable Encryption 3) Remove Password of your wifi by selecting option ‘Open’
By doing any of the above steps my PS4 Pro always recognizes my Wifi Connection.
Try, and share your thoughts.
Thanks for the share. I will also add this as a solution 🙂
Brand new PS4 opened last weekend. I have tried everything listed above and on other websites but still cant connect. I have a Xbox One, Xbox 360, and a Wii all in the same location and they connect fine with now issues. I use an extender in the room so every device including the PS4 shows 100% signal strength. I’m about to take this POS back to Game Stop and get my money back!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have you tried contacting your isp?

Sony and Playstation are complete TRASH when it comes to connecting to the internet! This is why they need Microsoft help with their online service!
We have this problem. I am watching shows on my PS4 and suddenly it wont connect to the internet. I restored to default settings and it still will not connect. We swapped out our Modem/Router combo. The PS4 worked for a day and then we have the same problems. Now, my wifi speed is supposed to be around 300 but sometimes it is only around 120. I am wondering if this is the issue, that the damn internet company is purposefully reducing the download speeds so that we will buy the next package. Now, here’s the twist. My computer wifi is working fine, but I cannot access Hulu or Vudu there as well.
have you tried using new DNS for the router I have got an article on how to use DNS for faster download speed and unblocking sites link is https://ps4dns.com/fastest-dns-servers-ps4/
This solution worked for my son! Thank you so much!!
You are welcome and if you nee any more ps4 related help you can check other post 🙂

Why Is My PS4 Asking for a Proxy Server?
Is your PS4 asking for a proxy server but have no idea what to do? Here, you will learn various reasons for such an error and how to fix it.
Many people complain that their PS4s are not launching on their networks anymore. It is always asking if there’s a proxy server in use. But when they say no, it spins a loop and goes back to the same proxy server question. If they click yes, it will ask for the server address, and they have no idea.
So what could be the problem? Could it be that the PlayStation 4 is faulty and won’t launch? If you have been facing these issues, worry not, we will help to clarify this issue. You will have your PS4 up and running in a few easy ways. Read on to find out!

There are various reasons why your PS4 can ask for a proxy server connection. Proxies help the console have a better and more stable connection, especially when playing online. That’s not to mean that you can’t play it offline. Here are some reasons your gaming console is asking for a proxy server.
The Wi-Fi Connection Is Unsecure

If you’ve been out of your hood with your gaming console, you may have noticed that it has trouble connecting. The most likely reason is that it recognizes the new connection. It then brands it as insecure, which is why it asks for a proxy. It may also be that the WiFi is far from your console. In this case, try using a WiFi booster or have it closer to your internet source. You can also try and use a wired connection instead.
You Have Power Issues

Power issues in your PS4 are caused by various factors. Some of these could be dirt, dust, or insects inside your console. It can also be corrupted data from a wrongly written file. Corrupted data happens because of failure to shut it properly when there’s a power outage. Try and unplug your power cable for 30 minutes before reconnecting it back to the console and powering it up.
Network Ban by Playstation

Sometimes people get banned from the PlayStation network because of breaking the terms and conditions set by the network. There are various reasons for getting banned among them being unpaid account debts. Whatever the reason, you may notice the PlayStation asking to connect to a proxy server.
Incorrect Network Settings on PS4

Other times, your network settings may be why your gaming console is asking for a proxy server. To solve this issue, go to the settings tab on your PS4. Select “ Network ”, then go to “ Set Up Internet Connection ”. While there, choose “ Your Network ” and then go to ” Custom ”. Select “ Do Not Specify Or Automatic ” then click “ Don’t Use For Proxy Server ”. The issue should be resolved once you’ve saved the settings.
You Have Hardware Issues
The proxy server issue could be due to hardware problems. Some of these hardware issues include bad HDMI or USB ports, or the WiFi chip not functioning properly. Other issues can include your TV connection, hard drive issues, or overheating. Thoroughly check your console for these issues if all else seems to fail.
How to Fix the Error?
Below are recommendations that you can use to fix proxy server issues in your PS4.
Adjust Your PS4 Settings

You can start by checking the console's network settings. Connectivity issues can be resolved by reviewing DNS settings. You can do this by modifying your network address settings. After this, reboot the gaming console to know if the problem is solved.
Check if Your Internet Is Connected

To play online with your gaming console need an internet connection. Your connection is mostly bad if other devices are also not connecting. That could be your laptop or phone. If none is connecting, your console will prompt you for a proxy address.
Update Your PS4 System Software Updates
Maybe you’re not using the latest version of PS4 software. In this case, follow the following steps to update your PS4 system software.
Step 1: Go to settings on your home screen
Step 2: Choose “ System Software Updates ”
Step 3: If there are any, click next to update
Step 4: Give time for the updates to download
Step 5: Go to downloads to install the update
Step 6: After successful installation, restart the gaming console
Step 7: Check if the proxy issues persist
Your Console Should Be Near the Wi-Fi Router

Sometimes the console may be far from the router. At that range, your gaming console cannot receive the needed internet to operate online. Therefore, move it closer to where the router is and try to reduce any obstructions like doors and walls.
Do a PS4 Reboot
Another way to fix the error is by rebooting your gaming console if the PlayStation Network is up. If nothing is wrong with your connection to the internet and the hardware, this solution might just solve the proxy error issue. Remember that the console must fully power down before booting it up. If nothing happens, try restarting your internet connection together with your PS4.
Get in Touch With PSN Support
