Finding one of the best laptops for writers isn't as simple as just turning up and choosing the biggest or most powerful. Word-processing software isn’t too taxing on laptops, so you won't need a gaming-spec powerhouse – but there are still plenty of other factors to consider.  

The most obvious requirement is a good keyboard. While you’re at home, you might be happier using an external keyboard, but when you’re away from your desk, it’s essential to have a laptop that is comfortable to write on for long periods with well-spaced keys that are easy to use. 

Likewise, the screen needs to be suitable for long writing sessions to minimise the strain on your eyes and give you enough space to work with. Some writers might prefer height to width, opting for a 3:2 aspect-ratio screen over the standard 16:9 widescreen to reduce the amount of scrolling needed when reading back through lengthy documents.

The 2020 MacBook Air remains our top pick as the best laptop for writing overall. It's wonderfully thin and light and offers brilliant battery life, making it perfect for taking it out and about with you. It also comes with a great keyboard – one that's thankfully been significantly improved from the keyboards in older Macs – so don't be put off if you've found them uncomfortable in the past. The 2020 MacBook Air's keyboard is much more tactile and feels nice to write on now.

The M1 MacBook Air is Apple's most accessible MacBook, but still offers much more power than what you'll need for writing alone, making it ideal for writers who might also need to use their laptop for other things. It also comes with a great-looking screen that's easy on the eye, making it a great choice for writers who will be working for long periods of time. Best of all, the 2020 model has been coming in for more regular discounts now that the new 2022 M2 MacBook Air has been released.

02. Acer Chromebook 314

If you're looking for a cheap laptop for writing, a Chromebook is probably the way to go. They cost less than Windows laptops, and much less than the MacBook Air above, but offer great battery life since they require little power. Just bear in mind that Chromebooks take their name from the fact that they run Chrome OS, not Windows, so you can't use every Windows app you might be used to. 

That isn't a problem for writing since there are word processors available for Chrome OS, including both Microsoft Word and Google Docs. This Chromebook also has very little internal storage, so you'll be saving work to the cloud. Unlike in the past, you no longer need to be connected to the internet to use a Chromebook though, so you can work pretty much wherever you want.

Some Chromebooks feel a little too small to be comfortable as laptops for writers but when we reviewed it, we found the 14-inch Chromebook 314 to be a nice size, and the keyboard is well laid out and comfortable to use. We found the screen to be good for writing too, with an anti-glare, matte finish. All in all, this is a solid alternative to a Windows laptop for writers on a budget.

03. Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio

If you want to treat yourself to a truly premium Windows laptop for writing, then the Surface Laptop Studio fits the bill. It offers a lot more power than you need for word processing – and costs a lot more than you really need to pay for a laptop for writing – but the keyboard is a pleasure to write on, the screen is gorgeous, and the touch screen has stylus support, which could come in handy for note-taking. 

This is a 2-in-1 device, which means it also converts into a tablet format, which can be useful for reading over your work when you're on the move, even on the train. It's not the most portable 2-in-1 but you get great battery life and when we reviewed it we found it runs Windows 11 incredibly well.

04. Acer Aspire 5

The Surface Laptop Studio is a laptop for writers who are feeling flush – if you want to wait until you get that deal for your first novel before splashing that much money on a computer, there are plenty of much more affordable Windows laptops for writers. The Acer Aspire 5 is a good laptop for writers who want a solid and dependable device without spending a fortune. With a plastic body, it doesn't exactly have a premium feel but it's solid enough to carry around.

It also performs well considering the price, especially if you're going to be sticking to word processing tools. The keys don't have the most travel, but the keyboard is well laid out for writing on. Overall, the Acer Swift 3 is a great affordable laptop for writers on a budget but feel that a Chromebook like number 2 on our list would be too restrictive.

05. Huawei MateBook X Pro

Most laptops have a traditional widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9. That's great for watching movies, but not necessarily the most convenient format for writing, which often requires scrolling up and down vertically oriented documents. An aspect ratio of 3:2 gives you more vertical space, allowing you to see more text on the screen at once. And it also works better for graphic-design work, so is the perfect ratio if you're a writer who also likes to or needs to work on more demanding visual software.

Huawei delivers all of that with the MateBook X Pro, and a very nice touchscreen it has too. This latest MateBook is a great performer – more than powerful enough for writers who also need to use design software regularly – and the keyboard is comfortable to work on. The downside is that if you're in a country like the US, which has blocked access to many Huawei devices and services, you don't get the benefits of the wider Huawei ecosystem. However, if you don't care for ecosystems and just want a premium laptop for writing and doing visual work on, the Huawei MateBook X Pro is a decent option.

06. Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook

If you want a really cheap laptop for jotting down notes on, no matter where you are, then the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet is a great choice for those looking for the best laptop for writers on a budget. It comes with a detachable keyboard, so it's incredibly easy to carry around, and as it's a Chromebook, it's also very cheap.

It also boasts almost 22 hours of battery life, so you could comfortably take this away with you and write somewhere remote for a few days, and still have battery life left.

There are some downsides though. The keyboard is small and not as comfortable as other laptops in this list. This is why we'd suggest using the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet for quickly jotting down notes, rather than typing up pages and pages of text in one go. But, with the portability and long battery life, the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet lets you note down your thoughts whenever inspiration strikes.

07. HP Chromebook 14

If you want a dependable laptop for writing on while keeping your costs as low as possible, the HP Chromebook 14 is a great choice. It's extremely affordable, but offers good performance when using word processing apps. As it's a Chromebook, that means Google Docs and Microsoft's online Word app are particularly well served.

Its keyboard is excellent for a cheap laptop, so you can tap away for hours on end, and the screen is bright and vibrant, so you won't get eye strain or fatigue when using the Chromebook 14 to write on. While it's not the most powerful laptop, and doesn't come with any glamorous bells and whistles, for a straightforward no-nonsense budget laptop for writing on, you won't go wrong with this.

08. LG Gram 17 (2021)

LG Gram 17 (2021) is a large but light laptop, which makes it an unusual one for my list. The great thing about writing is that you can do it almost anywhere, but in the past, if you wanted something extremely lightweight to carry around with you, you had to make do with a small screen. Larger laptops didn't tend to be light and portable enough to make them good companions for travel writers. 

However, the LG Gram 17 isn't just one of the lightest laptops in the world (so light, you can hardly notice it when you carry it in a bag), but it also offers a large 17-inch screen, which is ideal for writers.

Inside, it's also packed with some great tech, including 11th generation Intel processors, and a long battery life. The keyboard is also comfortable to use. If you do a lot of travelling while you write, then this is a great investment. Sure, there are cheaper laptops out there, but none offer such a large screen while keeping the overall weight of the laptop down.

09. Microsoft Surface Laptop 4

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is older than the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio above, but it's a great option for a cheaper alternative to the Studio or an all-around laptop that's truly great for writing.

The screen comes in two size options, 13.5 or 15 inches. The 13.5-inch model is cheaper, and still large enough for any writing endeavour so we can heartily recommend the base spec as one of the best laptops for writers anywhere. The tall 3:2 aspect ratio screen makes it very comfortable to write on, and it's a touchscreen too, perfect if you like to make tactile-feeling notes on your work. 

The battery life is excellent too, so you can travel about all day without worrying about finding a seat next to a power outlet on a train or in a café. And as it's been superseded by the newer Studio model and the Surface Laptop 5, expect to see discounts for this laptop popping up more regularly.

What makes a good laptop for writing.

As we mentioned in our introduction, some of the key factors in choosing the best laptop for writers include comfortable screens and keyboards, battery life and portability. If you can find a laptop that delivers in these areas, you’re on to a winner.

There are some other nice to have features to look out for, too - for example, anti-glare screens if you work outside often. You might also value having a touch screen or writing pad if you’re an avid note-taker.

Historically, storage has also been a consideration, but with the rise of cloud storage, many writers only worry about this if they don’t have regular WiFi access - plus, USB storage is a perfectly viable option.

How do I choose the best laptop for writing?

We think the laptops above are some of the best around for writing, but you’ll want to think about your own budget and needs as well as our recommendations. Setting a budget and sticking to it is important, especially in light of the increased cost of living, so we’ve included laptops at a variety of price points to cover all bases to help you choose the right model for you.

An Apple MacBook Air (M1, 2020) might be stylish and sophisticated, but a more reasonably-priced Acer model like the Aspire 5 or Chromebook 315 might give you everything you need.

Thinking about which value-adding features you’ll actually use is key, too - for example, a touch screen is nice to have, but if you’re unlikely to make use of it, it’s not worth the extra investment.

Should I get a MacBook or a Windows laptop?

Ultimately, this is a question of preference, but there are a few differences between MacBooks and Windows laptops for writers. While many writers have more experience with Microsoft Word, the software will set you back financially whereas the slightly less sophisticated Pages on Mac comes free. Of course, you could also just use Google Docs if you're regularly connected to WiFi and confident in its Offline Mode. 

MacBooks are generally more pricey, as are Mac-compatible peripherals, but can last longer than more budget-friendly Windows laptops. 

We can’t definitively say Mac or Windows is better for your personal writing preferences, but we will say that the MacBook Air (M1, 2020) is at the top of our list for a reason.

1. Google Pixelbook Go

Google Pixelbook Go may not be the most powerful Google Chromebook – that title belongs to Google Pixelbook – but it is currently the best Chromebook in our view. It’s also still plenty powerful without the premium price. 

Additionally, it has a few things going for it beyond the specs. Its battery life, for instance, is a little over 11 hours, so you can write for ten hours and still have enough juice left for unwinding with a good Netflix show. It also boasts an incredible keyboard, perfect for long hours of typing, and that rare 1080p webcam so you come out sharp as a tack when video conferencing with clients. 

Microsoft may have sacrificed some useful features for the price, but overall, this is an excellent laptop for writers.

2. Surface Laptop 4

As writers, we know what it takes for a laptop to be an excellent portable for wordsmiths, and we recommend this new entry to Microsoft’s Surface line. It comes with a comfortable keyboard, a stunning screen, and an Alcantara finish that helps make typing a more luxurious experience. 

Writers who travel a lot or prefer to work at cafes will appreciate its lightness. At just 0.57 inches thick and weighing in at just 2.79 pounds (1.3 kg), it makes it a breeze to carry around in your bag while commuting. But even with the Surface Laptop 4 being so thin, it still feels incredibly robust. 

Freelancers will also love that it’s affordable. Its insufficient ports cannot stop this from being a great laptop for writers.

Apple first rolled out its much-talked-about M1 silicon chip on the MacBook Air (M1, 2020), and so far, it’s been a real game-changer, especially for creative professionals who swear by MacBooks for their daily workload. 

While still the company’s thinnest and lightest laptop for writers, this M1-powered Air is more powerful than ever, touting a performance worthy of video and photo editing, let alone seeing writers through that book or those articles they’re working on. 

That’s without mentioning its brilliant battery life, which is a boon for those always on the road. According to Apple, you'll enjoy up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing or up to 18 hours of video. That's a full day's work before needing to plug it in - especially handy if you're regularly on the move.

4. HP Spectre x360 14-inch

Everyone is on the 14-inch bandwagon, including HP’s flagship line, the Spectre x360. The older 13-inch model has always secured a place in the best laptop guides, so it’s no surprise that the 14-inch is following in its footsteps. 

This new model comes with the same attractive gem-cut design and prowess, if just a bit more, thanks to the Tiger Lake chips that power it – only, it comes with a larger screen and, therefore, more screen real estate.

6. Dell XPS 15 (2021)

The Dell XPS 15 is back and better than ever, this time around offering a great leap in specs with the RTX 3050, RT 3050Ti, and 3.5K OLED display options – not to mention up to 8TB of storage (though note in the UK and Australia you'll be limited to 2TB.)

Dell is gunning for that pro-level status here, perhaps to compete with Apple’s M1-powered offerings, and it’s almost there. 

This model, even the OLED configuration, is snappy and can see you through the more modest creative workloads. Although the RTX 3050/3050Ti graphics are a bit underwhelming in performance, this is still a terrific companion to creative pros looking for a PC they can travel with. Go for the OLED version, and you’re also getting an incomparable, stunning visual experience.

7. Acer Swift 3

Beyond the Acer Swift 3's modest exterior, you'll find an excellent laptop with plenty of power for work and study. The Swift 3 (not to be confused with the Switch 3, another laptop from Acer) is inexpensive; however, that plain chassis is all aluminum and packed with beefy components. 

In terms of performance, it gets surprisingly close to the far more expensive Microsoft Surface Laptop. Its display is a little lower-res, but the two are strikingly similar - other than the price. 

This laptop is also incredible to use, with its roomy trackpad and backlit keyboard that offers a comfortable typing experience with decent travel. If you're going to be writing a lot – whether traveling or at the office, this is one of the best laptops for writing on offer.

8. Surface Pro 8

The Surface Pro line has struggled for a few years due to its aging design and Microsoft’s refusal to give it a proper, much-needed overhaul. Luckily, the Surface Pro 8 has changed all that. 

Microsoft finally took the aging design and completely modernized it with a gorgeous new look, a bigger display, and, finally, Thunderbolt 4. It also comes with the new Windows 11 operating system pre-installed and one of the best webcams we’ve used on a laptop. 

Sadly, it’s not without its share of flaws – the battery life, for example, is a paltry 6-hour affair, which is a disappointment. However, those who’ve been waiting a few years to upgrade their Surface Pro won’t find that a deal-breaker. The price increase might leave some to reconsider, however.

When choosing the best laptop for writers, there are several key factors you'll want to consider when weighing up your options. First and foremost, have a budget in mind. Given the wide range in costs, this could immediately whittle down the options, allowing you to focus only on those you're able and willing to afford. 

Next, consider any platform preferences you have. Used to working with Windows? Will you only consider Apple? Happy to go for Google? This factor will ensure you're only looking in the right place.

This keyboard is snappy and responsive, with our reviewer going so far as to claim it's his favorite laptop keyboard, period. 

The X1 Carbon also boasts outstanding battery life, managing 15 hours and 39 minutes of runtime on the Laptop Mag battery test at 1080p (web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits). 

The X1 Carbon can also survive under harsh conditions, as it’s been tested against 12 military-grade durability tests , and that is despite having an ultra-slim 0.6-inch chassis that weighs only 2.5 pounds. This makes it a good choice for writers on the go. And although the 1080p X1 Carbon starts at a premium price, it’s worth it for those looking for fast performance, a lightweight but durable design, a satisfying keyboard and decent battery life.

3. Dell XPS 13 (2020) 9310

The Dell XPS 13 excels in almost every category. The XPS 13 dedicates as much room on the deck as possible to the keyboard; this edge-to-edge design means the keys are even larger, and there’s more than enough room to accommodate those with larger hands. Beyond that, the keyboard is also relatively comfortable and satisfying to use.

While the 4K model doesn't boast the best battery life, if you drop down to one of the 1080p display options it delivers excellent battery life, with the 2020 model hitting 12 hours and 39 minutes on our Laptop Mag battery test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits). The Acer Swift 3x is a great choice for those needing a laptop that can go the extra mile in performance. It’s a mighty machine that absolutely demolished our tests: Its processing speeds are higher than other laptops in its category, it can transcode a 4K video to 1080p faster than any other laptop of a similar price, and its 1TB SSD has a lightning-fast transfer rate.

The Intel Iris Xe Max is a discrete GPU, which means the Swift 3x won’t handle gaming or intense video editing too well; if you expect to balance writing and light editing work, this laptop will be more than enough.

However, this power does come with a caveat. On the Laptop Mag battery test, the Swift 3x lasted only 7 hours and 53 minutes. If you’re looking for power, the Swift 3x is a good pick, but don’t expect it to last too long on a charge.

The best laptop for writers we've tested is the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022), a newer version of the very popular Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020) . It's an exceptionally well-built and compact laptop with a sharp and bright display, a comfortable keyboard, and an outstanding haptic touchpad, arguably one of the best touchpads on the market. Its M2 SoC is more than powerful enough to handle most writers' workloads, like text processing, web browsing, and video playback, and its battery lasts easily a full day. The only downside is its limited port selection, as you only get two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 and a MagSafe Charging port.

If you find the M2 MacBook Air too expensive, you can get the older M1 model, which is still available alongside the 2022 version. Plus, it starts at a lower price and is often on sale. Its battery lasts longer, but it has an older design, a worse 720p webcam, and a slightly slower M1 SoC. For Windows users, we recommend the Dell XPS 13 (2021) , the equivalent of a MacBook Air in the Windows world. You can configure it with a 1080p or 4k display and an Intel 11th Gen. Core i3, i5, or i7 CPU. There's already a newer 2022 model of the XPS 13 with Intel 12th Gen. CPUs, so if the 2021 model isn't available or you can find the 2022 model at the same price, then go with the newer model, as Intel's 12th Gen. processors perform much better in multi-threaded workloads.

Best Upper Mid-Range Laptop For Writers

Our best upper mid-range pick is the Lenovo Yoga 7i 14 (2021), a 2-in-1 convertible Windows laptop. It's available with Intel 11th Gen. processors and up to 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage. It has a sharp 14-inch display, a comfortable backlit keyboard, a reasonably large touchpad, and a good port selection that includes two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports. You can use it as a tablet since it's a 2-in-1, and it supports pen input, although you'll have to buy the stylus separately. Portability isn't a problem, thanks to its thin and light design, and its battery lasts comfortably through a whole day. Other features include a fingerprint sensor for quick logins and a privacy cover for the webcam. Our main complaint with this laptop is that the display doesn't get very bright, meaning visibility can be a problem in very well-lit or sunny rooms.

Best Mid-Range Laptop For Writers

If you want to save money with a more modest mid-range option, go with the Acer Swift 3 14 (2020). It's a sturdily built ultraportable with a battery that lasts nearly 14 hours of light use. You can configure it with an Intel 11th Gen Core i5 or i7 and up to 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage. Its 14-inch display looks sharp and provides enough room for split-screen multitasking, but it doesn't get very bright, so it isn't ideal for well-lit settings or outdoors in broad daylight. The keyboard feels decent to type on; it just feels a little cramped. As for the touchpad, it's on the smaller side but reasonably responsive to all movements and gestures. The only major downside is the webcam, as the image looks soft and underexposed, and the microphone sounds staticky. On the upside, you get a great port selection that includes two USB-As, one USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, a full-size HDMI, and a headphone jack.

Best Budget Laptop For Writers

If you're shopping on a very small budget, get the Lenovo Chromebook C340 15 (2020). This 15.6-inch Chromebook has a thin and light design, making it easy to carry around, and its battery lasts comfortably through a full workday. You can configure it with an Intel Pentium Gold or Core i3 CPU, both of which are powerful enough to provide a smooth desktop experience on Chrome OS. Unfortunately, you can only get a maximum of 4GB of RAM, which means it'll stutter if you have too many things running.

Another compromise is the display's brightness; it only gets bright enough for use in a moderately-lit room. The keyboard feels great to type on, and while the touchpad is small, it tracks all movements and gestures well. As this is a 2-in-1 convertible, you can set this laptop up in tent mode for media consumption or flip the screen all the way and use it as a tablet. It doesn't support pen input, though, which might be disappointing to fans of handwritten notes.

Finding a great laptop, let alone the best laptop for writers, is challenging. There are a lot of great laptops out there and a lot of terrible ones. Some have really uncomfortable keyboards, some are sluggish, and others just have short battery life. To help you find a new writing laptop for yourself or as a gift for a writer , we compiled a list of the best laptops for writers so you can be sure to buy one that is well-equipped to handle your next blog post or novel. Read on to learn which ones we recommend.

What Makes a Great Laptop for Writers?

A great laptop for writing has several main features including battery life, storage, type of keyboard, and more. Below are our recommendations for great laptop features if your primary purpose for using the laptop is writing.

Recommended Laptop Specifications for Writers

Storage:   These days, at least 250GB is ideal. If you travel a lot, you may want to look into an SSD drive upgrade . If you need more, you can always use a storage system like  Dropbox ,  OneDrive , and  iCloud .

Screen: Screen size is personal preference. Most laptops these days around 13″ to 14″. If you plan to write outside a lot, we recommend getting an anti-glare screen.

Battery Life:   Most laptops these days have plenty of battery life, but we recommend looking for one with at least 4 hours of battery life unless you plan to be tethered to a desk all day.

Keyboard: The most important factor for a keyboard is comfort. It’s hard to find laptops with comfortable keyboards, but you can always buy a lightweight wireless keyboard . “Bounce” and loudness of keyboard keys (the “clickety” sound) is personal preference so we cannot make any recommendations here. We highly recommend getting a backlit keyboard so you can write in low light.

Weight: Choose something lightweight (less than 4lbs) if you will carry it often.

Touchscreen/Writing Tablet: This is an optional feature, but you may want to get a touchscreen or writing pad if you plan to take a lot of handwritten notes.

RAM:   Buy at least 4GB, but more than 8GB is preferred.

Software:   Buy Windows or Mac OSX and your preferred word processor.

Processor: You should get an Intel i5 or better these days.

Ports: HDMI, USB 3, USB-C ports are de facto these days. Make sure you have at least one of each of these ports so that you can connect all of your devices.

Graphics: Getting a discrete graphics card is recommended, but not necessary.

Best Laptops for Writers

1. lenovo ideapad 3 – best laptop for writers.

Our team has been using Lenovo laptops for the last decade so we have a ton of experience using them. The Lenovo Ideapad received a major upgrade this year with the all-new Ideapad 3. The laptop now features 12GB of blazing-fast DDR4 Ram, a 512 GB SSD, and an 11th generation Intel processor. It even comes with Windows 11 built-in.

Lenovo is known for making quality, lightweight laptops. The Ideapad has always been one of their most value-driven laptops available making it perfect for the budget-conscious writer.

• Lightweight
• Fast Quad-Core processor
• 6-hour battery life

It comes with an Intel Core i3-1115G4 3.00 GHz Dual Core Processor, 12GB of DDR4 RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and great battery life.

Even with all of these features, the Ideapad weighs a mere 4.07lbs and is only 0.8 inches thick, so your backpack won’t be weighed down by this laptop.

Another great alternative is the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 which has a backlit keyboard.

2. Google Pixelbook Go – Best Chromebook for Writers

The Google Pixelbook Go could be one of the best investments you make. It has an extra long battery life (12 hours), a backlit keyboard with Hush keys for quiet typing, and weighs just over 2lbs.

The Google Pixelbook Go packs a 13.3 inch full-HD touchscreen, an 8th Gen Intel processor (M3, i5, or i7) and 8 or 16GB of RAM depending on the configuration you choose. The backlit keyboard with Hush Keys means you can write day or night without slowing down or waking anyone up. The laptop also has no fan so you won’t have to worry about it being noisy when the processor gets busy.

• Lightweight (2 lbs)
• Great battery life
• Touchscreen
• Runs ChromeOS (some apps will not work)

The only downside to this laptop is that it runs on Chrome OS so you need to be comfortable using Google Docs and other Google products for your content creation.

3. MacBook Air

The MacBook Air is the most portable laptop on this list. While it is one of the more expensive laptops, it weighs only 2.95 lbs, making it the lightest laptop on this list and a great choice for writers on-the-go. It has everything a writer needs and the Mac OS makes it extremely simple to use.

The MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch display, 8GB RAM, a 128GB SSD, and up to 12 hours of battery life. The MacBook Air doesn’t have a retina display so as to limit the amount of extra weight added from a bigger battery and graphics processor.

We recommend the MacBook Air if you want a lightweight laptop that features the Mac operating system. The asking price of ~$900 may be off-putting, but if you love the Apple ecosystem, this is the laptop for you.

I personally use the MacBook Air as a backup to my Lenovo laptop. While I prefer the Windows OS, the MacBook Air is convenient and lightweight enough that I don’t mind taking it on trips with me.

4. HP Spectre ×360

While the exterior casing might be the first thing you notice about the HP Spectre, the insides are amazing as well. HP’s 2-in-1 flagship laptop got a major (and really needed) refresh this year offering superior power and capabilities to make it one of the best writing laptops out there.

First and foremost, the keyboard is extremely comfortable. It will let you write for hours without fatigue. Second, the Intel 10th generation processor will make sure you have plenty of computing power to handle any writing or content creation application.

The battery life did declined slightly this year, but the laptop should still last over 12 hours.

5. Asus Chromebook Flip

While it may not pack the same power as the other laptops on this list, the 2-in-1 ASUS Chromebook doesn’t need to since it makes up for it in portability. It has a 12.5-inch screen touchscreen that converts to a writing tablet,  4GB of RAM, and an Intel M5 processor.

It only has 64GB of flash storage which is plenty since you can store everything else in the cloud. The tablet runs on Chrome OS so like the Pixelbook you will need to be ok with using Google Docs.

The battery lasts for up to 10 hours which should give you plenty of time to write off-grid.

6. MacBook Pro

The MacBook Pro 13.3-Inch Retina Display, 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, and up to 12 hours of battery life. It is also one of the lightest laptops on this list. It has a backlit keyboard for writing in low light and a spacious palm rest.

We recommend the MacBook Pro if you prefer the Mac OSX operating system environment or prefer a really great screen resolution. The asking price may be off-putting, but if you love the Apple ecosystem, this is the laptop for you.

I think that for whatever profession that you have and you are looking for a new laptop it is important to consider how you are going to use it. I think it is important to utilize cloud storage as well as it is helpful for the times you may have problems with your equipment – you will be able to access it from anywhere. The no.1 choice should be a Thinkpad – they have the best keyboards by far!

This is a great list and covers a lot of aspects that are important for writers. The only thing missing, from my perspective, is a description of screen brightness for each laptop.

I love sitting outside in the sunshine to write, but I usually end up leaning forward and squinting at the screen when it’s a bright day – an issue made even worse if the screen is reflective as well.

With this additional criterion I believe this list could be a one-stop shop for any writer who is looking for a new laptop! 🙂

In my opinion you’re missing the #1 most important factor in a laptop for a writer, and that’s having a keyboard where you don’t accidentally brush your thumb against the touch pad and move your cursor, or accidentally hit some key that pulls up some weird function you don’t care about.

A writer-friendly laptop would have something like an “I’m in the zone” mode where you can only write, and other functions are temporarily shut off.

That’s a fantastic idea! You should patent it!

I actually have a wireless keyboard I love that I use with any laptop. I can sit back in my chair, get comfy and type with it on my lap or on a tray and watch the screen from a comfortable distance. It makes it easier finding a writing laptop, because I don’t care about the keyboard on it, or worry about accidently touching the mouse pad. I used to do that so often, which is why I decided to go with the wireless keyboard to begin with. Best purchase I ever made.

I agree with Greg. I like a keyboard with plenty of ‘bounce’ for accurate touch-typing, (also at least 15.5 screen for artwork). I don’t need a thin model as I rarely take it out of the house, but I do move it from room to room and take it outside. The only suitable ones I can find are reconditioned. I’m by no means the only person who has these requirements. Does anyone know of a suitable current model? Message to manufacturer’s: this is a gap in the market – get in there!

This is absolutely spot on. And the number 1 on this list? I have the Ideapad 3, and by this criteria, it’s absolutely the worst laptop I’ve ever had. It’s a terrible laptop for writers, because of the stray thumb problem, on the touchpad. Several times per hour, suddenly I’m typing in the middle of the wrong paragraph, violating the middle of a word! This hardware, with Windows 10, simply has no setting, no solution, no 3rd party app that will help. I have contacted the mfg, and MS, and many gurus and experts, and there’s no hope. Are all laptops like this now? (and yes, there’s a F6 key that completely turns off the touchpad, and it’s useful, but sometimes, when editing, a writer *wants* to use the touchpad, for cursor placement, etc.) So disappointed in this *new* hardware/software. For writers, computers peaked about a decade ago. Does anybody have solutions? Will follow for helpful/commiserating comments!

Hello Camillo. I was wondering about your problem of noise. My old laptop has a deep ‘bounce’ keyboard and is almost silent. Maybe you think they are like separate keyboards (with towers and monitors etc)? Now they can be a bit noisy. I don’t think that would bother me anyway, as I lose myself into what I’m writing. This is a really great list and I have been researching a lot for a good new laptop for myself, I am about to be in my final year of my graphic design degree and was wondering if you think its necessary to have a 2 in 1 or just to have a powerful laptop + separate tablet. My current set up is an Acer Aspire 5 , Intel i5, 8GB Ram, 256 ssd and a small XP-PEN Star G640 drawing tablet. The laptop was great while it lasted but is just super heavy (15.6in) and I just really like all the new 2 in 1, especially since the latest models have a screen that has the ability to draw. “The pen is mightier than the sword” may have been true in 1839, but most writers today have traded their pen for a laptop. What kind of laptop does a writer need? Typically they don’t need the most powerful model. However, one that’s compact and has a comfortable keyboard is a good start. Next comes the choice of display, and here the writer needs to decide whether his or her priority is portability or screen real estate.

Choosing the best laptop for writing means understanding your preferences and making the right compromises. A larger screen requires a larger, heavier laptop. A more comfortable keyboard will add some thickness. A long-lasting battery means the computer will weigh a bit more.

You need to decide whether to prioritize price or power. A powerful processor and graphics card is nice, but necessary only if you use your laptop for more than writing.

The  MacBook Air  is almost the perfect tool for a writer, and it’s the one I chose for myself. It’s highly portable and has stellar battery life. That’s because it doesn’t offer any more power than is necessary. The new model now offers a Retina display, and it’s housed in a strong, unibody aluminum shell for maximum durability.

But some writers do need a more powerful computer. For example, if they also work with video, develop games, or want to use their laptop for gaming. In that case, it’s hard to overlook  Apple MacBook Pro . It’s not cheap but offers plenty of RAM, a fast multi-core processor, discrete graphics, and a terrific display.

For the budget-conscious, many inexpensive laptops are capable writing machines. We include a number of them in our roundup. Of these, the  Lenovo Chromebook C330  offers exceptional value. It’s inexpensive, highly portable, and the battery life is fantastic. And because it runs Chrome OS, it is still fast despite its low specs.

For those who require Windows and can live with a little less battery life, we recommend the  Acer Aspire 5 .

I love laptops. Until I started working full-time from my home office, I always used one as my primary machine. I currently have an 11-inch MacBook Air, which I use when working away from my iMac. I’ve been using it for over seven years, and it still runs like new. Though it doesn’t have a Retina screen, it has more than enough pixels to write productively, and I find its keyboard incredibly comfortable.

I started using laptops in the late 80s. Some of my favorites have been an Amstrad PPC 512 (the “512” means that it had 512 kilobytes of RAM!); notebook computers from HP, Toshiba, and Apple; subnotebooks from Olivetti, Compaq, and Toshiba; and netbooks from Asus and Acer. I also regularly use an 11-inch iPad Pro in my writing workflow. I value portability!

I’ve earned my living writing for more than a decade. I understand what works and what doesn’t. I know how the needs of a writer can evolve, and I love that we can now do a full day’s work on a single battery charge.

As I started to work full-time from my home office, I began adding a few peripherals: external monitors, an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, a trackpad, external backup drives, and a laptop stand. The right peripherals can enhance your productivity and give your laptop the same abilities as a desktop computer.

In choosing which laptop models to include, I consulted dozens of reviews and roundups by writers. I ended up with a list of eighty different models.

I checked consumer ratings and reviews for each one, looking for highly-rated models that were being used by hundreds or thousands of users. I was surprised by how many promising laptops were disqualified during this process.

From there, I considered the design and specifications of each model, taking into account that different writers have different needs, and chose the 12 models we recommend in this review. I chose three winners based on portability, power, and price. One of these should suit most writers, but the remaining nine models are also definitely worth considering.

The MacBook Air is close to the perfect laptop for writers. It’s what I use personally. I can vouch for its durability. Mine is seven years old now and still running just like the day I purchased it.

While expensive, it’s the cheapest Mac laptop you can buy. It doesn’t offer more power than necessary, and its slim profile makes it perfect for carrying around with you so that you can write on the go.

You should be able to type on the Air for 18 hours on battery alone, allowing for a full day’s work without having to whip out your AC adapter. Its keyboard is backlit and offers Touch ID for easy and secure login.

The downsides: you can’t upgrade the Air after you purchase it, so make sure you choose a configuration that will meet your needs for the next few years. Some users wish the laptop came with more ports. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports will be hard for some users to live with. A USB hub will go a long way if you need to add peripherals like an external keyboard or hard drive.

While I believe this Mac offers the best experience to those wanting a quality, portable laptop for writing, there are other options:

• If you want a similar laptop that comes with Windows out of the box, the Microsoft Surface Pro may suit you better.
• If you use your computer for more than just writing, you may need something more powerful. The MacBook Pro may be a better fit for you.

The MacBook Pro offers more computing power than many writers need. It’s capable of audio production, video editing, and game development, and can be configured more powerfully than any of the other laptops in our roundup.

So if you value functionality over portability, this is an excellent choice. Its backlit keyboard has more travel than the Air’s, and its 11-hour battery life is impressive.

Even more impressive is the 16-inch Retina display. Not only is it larger than any other laptop in our roundup, but it has far more pixels as well. Its 3456 by 2234 resolution means almost six million pixels. Its closest competitors are Microsoft’s Surface Pro with five million pixels, and the Surface Laptop and other MacBooks, which have four million.

When working at your desk, you can plug in an even bigger monitor or two. Apple Support says the MacBook Pro 16-inch can handle two 5K or 6K displays.

Like other laptops, it lacks USB ports. While three USB-C ports may work for you, to run USB-A peripherals, you’ll need to purchase a dongle or different cable.

While this is the best laptop for writers who need more power, it’s not your only option. There are more affordable options that will suit Windows users:

This laptop may be inexpensive, but it has a lot going for it—especially if you value portability. It’s even lighter than the MacBook Air (though not quite as sleek) and has impressive battery life.

To keep the size down, it comes with an 11.6-inch screen with a relatively low 1366 x 768 resolution. While that’s the lowest resolution of any laptop in this review (along with the Acer Spin 3), it’s the same resolution as my old 11-inch MacBook Air. It’s rare for me to run into issues related to screen resolution.

Despite the laptop’s low specs, it runs Chrome OS superbly. You won’t have the same range of applications to choose from as if you were using Windows or macOS, but if you can live with Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Grammarly, and Evernote, you’ll be fine.

Users seem to love this laptop and rate it highly. But they make it clear in their reviews that they realize this isn’t a drop-in replacement for a Windows laptop, and adjust their expectations accordingly. They comment that the keyboard is nice to type on, the scrolling is smooth, and the pixels are easy to read. Microsoft Office works fine, and you can watch Netflix when taking a break.

Many love the touch screen and use it to take notes with a stylus (which is not included). The hinge is designed so that you can flip the keyboard behind the screen and use the laptop as a tablet.

I often use my 11-inch iPad Pro for writing, and currently pair it with Apple’s own Smart Keyboard Folio. It’s quite comfortable to type on and also serves as a case for the iPad. For longer writing sessions, though, I prefer to use one of Apple’s Magic Keyboards.

There are plenty of writing apps available for the device (I use Ulysses and Bear on my iPad, just like I do on my Macs), and also take handwritten notes using the Apple Pencil. The screen is clear and bright, and the processor is more powerful than many laptops.
