Clinical Psychology PHD

Using the scientist-practitioner model of study, this program emphasizes the scientific basis of the field. That means students learn to critically evaluate research literature and approach assessments and therapy within a framework that is scientifically valid. Students complete a series of didactic courses that focus on research methodology, statistics, research design, and the implementation of scientific studies. The program is designed to be completed in five years, and awards a master’s degree along the way to the doctoral credential. Students spend the final year of their studies completing a 12-month pre-doctoral internship, which is preceded by multiple practica experiences. On average, students take 5.5 years to graduate, and between 2005-2013 95 percent of graduates chose to become professionally licensed after earning their degree.

Wyoming Psychology Doctorate Programs

As more Americans accept the idea that they would benefit from counseling or other treatments for mental health, anxiety or behavioral issues, the system for this care will continue to be stressed and struggle. In fact, this has been an issue in the U.S. since the 1960s and was a driving factor in the creation of the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), a doctorate that aims to provide the educational foundation of a clinical psychology practice.

But being able to practice professionally in the United States, including here in Wyoming, means first being licensed by the state where you want to practice. Before that can happen, people must first earn a doctoral degree in psychology, which can include a Psy.D. or a more traditional Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy).

List of PsyD Programs in Wyoming

There are currently no Psy.D. programs offered here in the state of Wyoming. However, there are a couple of online degree programs that could be appropriate. Students in Wyoming should note that one of the licensure requirements is 1,500 hours of clinical residency or internship as part of a degree program, and this may not come standard in many online programs. So students will need to be sure to advocate for themselves in any online degree program they select; if an internship is not possible, then it’s not the right degree program for them.

California Southern

CalSouthern’s online Psy.D. was constructed following California’s requirements for licensure, but the 100% online approach allows students across the country to benefit. An internship is optional with this program, so students in Wyoming will need to be sure to take that option.

University of Wyoming

The University of Wyoming’s Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology first earned the APA’s seal of approval in 1972, and today’s students can contribute research in a range of areas, including eating disorders, substance abuse, ADHD, aging and self-harm. UW also staffs and supports a community mental health clinic where students gain real-world experience. All 34 graduates over the past decade have earned professional licensure.

How to Become a Clinical Psychologist in Wyoming

A career as a psychologist in Wyoming begins with education, but the journey doesn’t stop there. Let’s take a look at the steps required to becoming professionally licensed to practice psychology in the state of Wyoming.

  • Complete your undergraduate education. Majoring in psychology is the most obvious bachelor’s degree path, but those with degrees in social work, biology or statistics, or some other subject, also can earn professional licensure eventually. Applicants to doctoral programs in psychology should be sure to closely check the admissions requirements of the institutions in which they are most interested, as some schools require all applicants to have psychology degrees, while others may accept those without.
  • Get your doctorate. The Wyoming Board of Psychology prefers licensure applicants who have completed an APA-accredited Psy.D. or Ph.D. degree, but those with a doctoral degree that’s not APA-accredited may still apply. The state will require additional documentation during the application procedure to validate that their doctoral program included at least three years of full-time study, plus at least 1,500 hours of clinical residency or internship.
  • Meet all other state standards. In addition to a doctoral degree, applicants for licensure must complete a total of 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience, all of which can be during their doctoral program. If their Psy.D. or Ph.D. program didn’t include at least 3,000 hours, then they must complete 1,500 hours of postdoctoral supervised professional experience. Additionally, applicants must score at least 500 on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology .
  • Keep up-to-date on your license. They expire annually in Wyoming, and psychologists are required to complete at least 30 hours of continuing education each year.

Wyoming Clinical Psychologist Salary and Job Outlook

An average full-time worker in Wyoming can expect to earn about $49,000 per year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says. But for clinical psychologists, the financial picture is usually better. That’s because clinical, counseling and school psychologists in Wyoming earn an average annual salary of more than $78,000 per year, and they can easily make more than $100,000 on the high end of the salary spectrum.

Additionally, the outlook for psychologists in Wyoming is good, with a robust 8% growth rate projected in employment over the next decade. This is considerably higher than the 5% rate that’s expected for all American jobs.

The Department of Veterinary Sciences offers interdisciplinary education with animal or public health focus. Our students have direct access to two unique training facilities, an atmospheric research aircraft, and one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. Many of our students have pursued careers with the National Weather Service or air quality agencies. Students earning a PhD in Botany will achieve a breadth of knowledge about plant biology and will be accomplished in their ability to extend knowledge through scholarly research. The School of Pharmacy offers only the four-year curriculum leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Students admitted to the professional pharmacy program follow a four-year program of study leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. Students complete a total of 146 hours.

Psychology, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychology: Students complete a four-year, on-campus sequence of required courses covering core areas of psychology and clinical competency. In addition, the following are required: successful completion of a thesis, a preliminary comprehensive examination, a dissertation, two summer clerkships, and a full-year APA-accredited internship. Social Psychology, Cognition/Cognitive Development, or Psychology and Law: Students complete course requirements in topics designated as core areas of psychology, a preliminary comprehensive examination, and a research-based dissertation.

The Board of Psychology was created in 1965 to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Wyoming by ensuring that those individuals licensed or certified to provide psychology services in this state are appropriately qualified. The Board operations are fully supported by fees established and collected and relies on no General Fund monies. During the 2022 Legislative Session, the Board was granted the authority to license behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts.

Wyoming Master’s in Psychology Degree Programs and Resources

The University of Wyoming is currently the only college in Wyoming that offers non-terminal (master’s in psychology with doctorate) postgraduate psychology degree programs. They do not accept students for a terminal master’s in psychology. Students who do not have a master’s degree can still earn one within the doctorate program. The programs the University of Wyoming provide include: PhD in Clinical Psychology; PhD in Psychology and Law; PhD in Social Psychology; and PhD in Cognition/Cognitive Development. There is a resource section under “Wyoming Psychology Resources” at the bottom of the page that itemizes sites with useful, local psychology information. Neighboring states offering graduate psychology degree programs are Colorado , Utah , Idaho , Montana , South Dakota and Nebraska .

Doctoral Internship in Clinical and Community Psychology Matches New Fellows

Yale doctoral internship in clinical and community psychology graduates celebrate.

The results of the national match were announced for psychology internship programs on Feb. 16. Through this process, the Yale Department of Psychiatry's Doctoral Internship in Clinical and Community Psychology selected its incoming class of 14 fellows who will spend a year training at one of nine clinical sites based at the Connecticut Mental Health Center and Yale New Haven Hospital.

Fellows were selected from a large pool of over 300 highly qualified applicants. Donna LaPaglia, PsyD, ABPP, the department's acting director of training, said, These individuals represent the future leaders of the field, I have no doubt that they will make significant contributions to our Yale community and to the field of psychology.”

The success of this year’s match speaks to the faculty and staff investment in the internship recruitment process. Rajita Sinha, PhD, deputy chair of psychiatry for psychology and chief of psychology said, "We have one of the largest Psychology Sections among academic medical centers across the country with stellar psychology faculty involved in this training program. Their efforts have yielded an exceptional internship program that draws the best graduate students from across the country. We look forward to training the next generation of health service psychology leaders.”

Jacob Tebes, PhD, chief of psychology at the Connecticut Mental Health Center, said, “We had another outstanding match this year, one of our best ever. We look forward to welcoming an exceptional group of psychology fellows.”

" We couldn’t be more pleased with the results of this year’s match," said Dwain Fehon, PsyD, chief of psychology at Yale New Haven Hospital. "The pool of applicants was quite competitive, and we were able to match with our top choices. We are truly looking forward to their arrival in July.”

Students typically complete this clinically oriented internship as the final year of a five-year program of graduate study, which leads to a PhD or PsyD. Additional information on the internship is available at www.psychologytraining.yale.edu .

Update to 2024 Best Graduate Schools Launch

D uring our regular rankings pre-publication process, U.S. News received and is currently reviewing queries from some graduate schools, including whether and to what extent affiliated institutions were considered in the bibliometric data used in the 2024 Best Medical Schools and 2024 Best Engineering Schools rankings, and which accrediting body was used as a source of reference for the 2024 Best Clinical Psychology Programs rankings. We take our role as a journalism enterprise very seriously and we will not publish information without full confidence in what we publish.

As a result, we have made the decision to delay the publication of the 2024 Best Medical Schools, Best Engineering Schools and Best Clinical Psychology Program rankings until such time that we can appropriately address these questions. All other graduate school rankings – across 82 professional fields – will be released as planned on April 9.

Our focus remains on providing the best information for prospective students.

Clinical science graduate student receives the caldwell award.

The Caldwell award recognizes a psychology graduate student who exemplifies public-spirited attitudes and actions that encourage bridging divides to discover unity in common purpose and to be a positive force for hope and possibilities.   

“We are proud to have Alex represent our graduate program,” said Dr. Ann Marie Ryan, director of the psychology graduate programs. “Alex’s nominators – peers, faculty and community partner – noted her dedication to service, her elevation of marginalized individuals within our community, her high-quality mentorship, as well as her own research focus.”  

Vazquez’s research focuses on the origins and development of resilience, and identifying factors that help individuals from historically disadvantaged backgrounds overcome environmental adversity. In addition to her research, Vazquez co-chairs the Clinical Area’s Diversity Sciences Committee and has been active in The Alliances for Graduate Education and Professoriate (AGEP). For years, she has also been dedicated to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.  

“It’s such an honor to get this award and to be recognized for the work that I’ve been doing for the past few years,” said Vazquez. “I could not be where I am today without a lot of the support from my community and from different mentors that I've had. I really try to pay that forward to my peers and to students that are carving out a path of their own."  

Research & Mentorship  

Originally from Chicago, Vazquez was in the McNair Scholars program at DePaul, which helps prepare first-generation students for further education. Vazquez credits that mentorship as crucial to her success.  

“I really needed that support to move beyond an undergraduate education and pursue graduate studies. That mentorship was invaluable for me,” said Vazquez. “Now that I’m in graduate school, I really try to help undergraduates by exposing them to research and helping them with their applications to graduate school. I find it really rewarding to give back.”  

As an undergraduate student, Vazquez worked with her mentor, Dr. Cecelia Martinez-Torteya, an alum of the MSU Clinical Science program, to study the socio-emotional development of children. As a post-baccalaureate, she also worked on the Violence Prevention Project at DePaul University’s Center for Community Research, which worked to implement and assess an intervention to promote well-being among high school students in the Chicagoland area, particularly in urban, low-income areas.  

As a graduate student, Vazquez works with Dr. Alex Burt , the co-founder of the MSU Twin Registry. They use behavioral genetics methods to narrow in on environmental and genetic factors influencing youth resilience. In her second year, Vazquez was awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship for her master's thesis project through the National Science Foundation. Last year, Vazquez was awarded a National Research Service Award for her dissertation project through the National Institute of Health which allowed her to stay for a 6 th year in the Clinical Science program to do further research.  

As the co-chair of the Clinical Area’s Diversity Sciences Committee, Vazquez has worked to create a space for conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion within their program. They’ve also tried to increase initiatives—including successfully proposing a new DEI brown bag series that will begin in the fall. 

Last year, they also made community service a part of their mission. After exploring potential collaborations, they began working with Haven House, a local organization that supports unhoused families. They’ve run charity drives and have also used their clinical expertise to train staff on how to navigate interpersonal challenges, assess therapy needs, and make therapy referrals.  

Recently, Vazquez matched for an internship with a medical center called Denver Health, the biggest safety-net hospital in Denver that works with under resourced folks and underserved populations. She’ll be working with substance use populations, as well as having the opportunity to work with Spanish-speaking populations.  

“A lot of the research that I work on can take years to see any effect. Being able to do something where you can see an immediate effect in your community is important to me. It really drives me,” said Vazquez. “I’m in a very privileged position where I can leverage my expertise, time, and knowledge to help the community. That’s something I’m passionate about.”

April, 2022 -- Matt Gray is the winner of the inaugural "Laramigo" Award for Community Engagement . The award recognized Dr. Gray's exceptional service work across the state, on campus, and in Laramie itself. 

April, 2022 -- Dora Montez, Accountant Associate Senior for the Psychology Department, received the True Grit Award. The award recognizes  UW staff members who are noted for their flexibility, consistency, vision, grit, and/or problem-solving skills.

April, 2022 -- Basia Dabrowski received the Stewart Family Serviceship Award  for her project entitled Developing Interventions to Address Social Isolation among Older Wyoming Residents at Risk for Nursing Placement

February, 2022 -- Wyoming Center on Aging is offering  free online workshops for people with chronic health conditions and their caregivers. "HealthyU" is a workshop with the goal of helping people better manage their health conditions and deal with the frustration, fatigue and pain that can accompany many different health conditions.

February, 2022 -- Dr. Kasey Stanton received funding for a graduate research assistant from the Wyoming  INBRE program .  

February, 2022 -- Dr. Kayla Burd was named as a Humanities Research Group Fellow from the Wyoming Institute for Humanities  for 2022-2023. 

May, 2021 -- Layla Elmi published her thesis entitled " Interpersonal Functioning and Trauma: The Role of Empathy in Moderating the Association of PTSD and Interpersonal Functioning " in the journal  Behavior Therapy.

Sept. 2020 -- We are sad to announce that the department lost two dear friends this summer. Elmer Kingsholm “Kim” Nelson passed away August 30, and Sue Rardin passed away July 21. Kim was a good friend to the department and participated in many events that celebrated his beloved aunt, June Downey. Kim came to visit whenever he could, and introduced us to so many members of the Downey family. Sue was the wife of our former colleague and Chair, Max Rardin. She, along with Max’s friends, started the Max Rardin Scholarship Fund, upon Max’s death.

August 30, 2020 -- Lexi Bammel had a paper that was awarded FIRST place in the annual American Psychology-Law Society’s best undergraduate paper award competition. Her poster is automatically accepted to the annual APLS conference.

May 14,2020 -- UW Clinical Psychology alums, Dr. John Moring and Dr. Christina Hassija Keeting, have published a very timely paper on trauma treatment in the COVID-19 movement via telehealth. Cognitive Processing Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder via Telehealth: Practical Considerations During the COVID‐19 Pandemic.

April 9, 2020 -- Morgan Longstreth is the recipient of the Marvin Millgate Student Engagement Award . The award recognizes one outstanding UW student or recognized student organization that is engaged in service-learning or other service opportunities that have made a tangible difference in the community.

Feb. 24, 2020 -- Cynthia Hartung, a professor in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Psychology, has received a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research next spring semester at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

UD programs remain among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report

In the 2025 edition of Best Graduate Schools , U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Delaware's graduate programs among the best in the nation.

“As we continue to enhance and expand our excellent graduate programs to meet the needs of our students and society, it is gratifying to see the expertise and hard work of our faculty and staff nationally recognized,” said UD President Dennis Assanis. “We are proud of the positive impact that our graduate students are making on the world, and we look forward to even greater successes ahead empowered by their UD education.”     

UD’s consistently top-ranked physical therapy program remained in the top three nationwide. This is the first year U.S. News and World Report ranked speech-language pathology programs with UD’s inaugural ranking at #32.

“Excellent graduate preparation is central to the University of Delaware's mission as a world-class research institution," said Louis Rossi, dean of UD’s Graduate College and vice provost for graduate and professional education.
