Sound of Silence Reviews

sound of silence movie review 2023

While the filmmaking is skilfully inventive, packed with touches that catch the eye and ear, the script feels perhaps underpowered, relying on scary-movie gimmicks rather than suspense or resonance.

The horror movie Sound of Silence over-relies on annoying sound effects as a distraction from the very limp and predictable story. Note to filmmakers: Repeating loud noises doesn’t automatically make a horror movie scary.

Sound of Silence perhaps struggles because it tries to do so much. In its efforts, it at times spins wildly between being hectic and being flat, between being an homage and striking out alone. But there are good elements in here, and these deserve credit.

‘SOUND OF SILENCE’ (2023): Effective Haunted Object Horror – Movie Review

Kenn Hoekstra February 20, 2023 Movie Reviews , News , Reviews Comments Off on ‘SOUND OF SILENCE’ (2023): Effective Haunted Object Horror – Movie Review

The tagline for Italian directing trio T3’s SOUND OF SILENCE (2023) promises: “A chilling and stylish haunted house horror movie with a twist in the vein of The Conjuring and Oculus .” That was enough to sell me on the idea of catching this new offering from XYZ Films. Did it live up to the hype?

Watch the trailer below, then read on for our spoiler-free review!

Sound of Silence (2023) Synopsis

When her father is gravely injured, Emma returns to her family home in Italy. Alone in the house while her father recovers, she encounters a haunted radio – and the evil entity behind it. With the supernatural force growing stronger by the hour, Emma must reveal the dark secret behind the radio’s curse to survive the night.

Alessandro Antonaci, Stefano Mandalà, and Daniel Lascar wrote and directed the film. It stars Penelope Sangiorgi, Rocco Marazzita ( You Die , TV’s Jack Stall Dead ), Lucia Caporaso ( Baggage Red ), Daniele De Martino ( House of Gucci ), Chiara Casolari, Peter Stephen Wolmarans, and Alessandra Pizzullo ( At War with Love ).

Here’s a look at the poster art.

Sound of Silence (2023)

A Haunted…Radio?

I was told there would be a haunted house in this film, but it’s not really about the house. What we have here is essentially a haunted radio. No big deal. There’s usually a mystery to be solved whenever you find a cursed object, and that’s all part of the fun. So it goes, here, with Sound of Silence . The film opens, just as the trailer does, with a man breaking out an antique radio and tinkering with it in his workshop. Of course, it doesn’t take long to realize that this movie isn’t about the weekly top 40. It’s about history. And fear.

The old guy’s encounter with the radio doesn’t end so well, and soon his daughter is off to visit him to see if she can help. She, too, discovers the radio and must unlock its secrets before it drives her insane…or worse. What unfolds is a fairly straightforward chiller that is less about a “twist,” and more about the discovery of this radio’s dark history. Don’t touch that dial!

Sound of Silence

There are some pretty effective thrills and chills in here. It has jump scares galore, but it’s not just that. The makeup and visuals and glowy eye effects and the whole nine yards are also pretty creepy. There’s some good misdirection in here, too. When you think a GOTCHA is coming from one direction, it hits you from another. I got my fair share of tingles and goosebumps watching this.

I checked this out late at night on a tablet while wearing Bluetooth earbuds, and that experience really made me take notice of the audio. It’s safe to say that with a name like Sound of Silence , and a plot that involves a radio, it’s fair to expect the film to focus on the aural. It does. From the heroine being an aspiring singer to the showdown in a recording studio and all kinds of other sound-related things, the motif really works to pull everything together. We all know how much any good movie scare can be amped up by a good audio cue. That’s certainly the case here.

My main regret with this one is watching the trailer. The trailer really does show a lot, and while it was enough to hook me and make me want to watch (the goal of every trailer, I suppose), a lot of the most effective stuff from the film is in there, and that left me wanting more. Stuff appearing when you turn the radio on and off, in particular, is attention-grabbing, so it’s a shame the trailer shows so much of it. The trailer does not show EVERYTHING , however. You still need to find out what this radio’s deal is, and there’s some pretty eerie stuff in the final scene. It’s nice to get one big final shock that ends the film on a high note.

Sound of Silence

Sound of Silence – Final Thoughts

Sound of Silence is an effective cursed object thriller with solid acting performances and enough chills to make it worth your time. Turn off the lights and crank up the audio for maximum effect. I think you’ll like what you see…and hear.

Sound of Silence hits video-on-demand and digital platforms on March 9, 2023. Watch for it!

Sound of Silence (2023) Review: Yet Another Cheesy Horror Flick

Movies like Sound of Silence are the reason horror is never respected as a genre, always getting snubbed out of award shows and seen as a collection of make-up and jump scares. While the genre has many masterpieces to offer, many of which were made in the last few years to prove that there are still good and original stories to be told within the horror realm, it is sadly plagued by hundreds of these cheesy flicks that all follow the same formulaic approach that results in clones of the same cheesy concept, and therefore, confirmation of the general public’s opinion of horror cinema.

An old man is busy at work in his attic fixing an old radio on a desk. It’s filled with broken things that he likes to fix as a hobby. Soon, his wife calls him for dinner, but he is focused on the old radio until it starts working again. And to his terror, he finds out that turning it on summons a spirit that tries to kill him and his wife, landing them in the hospital.

High On Films in collaboration with Avanté

Thousands of miles away in New York, his daughter comes back home to her partner. She has had a failed audition and receives a call from her mother telling her they are in a hospital.  Subsequently, she flies to Italy with Saba, her boyfriend, to join her parents. Upon arriving, her mother begs her not to spend the night at home. But of course, she ignores her warning and heads there with Saba. The old radio contains a mystery and horror that will haunt them throughout the night as they try to understand it to defeat it.

This jumbled plot appears to be a random conglomeration of horror genre tropes: haunted house, old spirits, an item that contains evil, etc. It’s all there in a mishmash that hopes to terrorize the viewers. Yet all it does is add to the mediocrity of the film. The build-up sections of the film, usually reserved for furthering the plot and explaining its details, end up being a complete bore. The viewer might painfully feel that these scenes are just a badly done parody of a hundred other better films. The climactic scenes are nothing but full of jump scares. Moreover, there are “scary” voices by haunted victims, like a poor impression of The Exorcist.

Sound of Silence Movie Review

When it comes to cinematography, Sound of Silence went for a grayish palette in literally all of its scenes. Whether it’s indoors, outdoors, or in a different country…it’s all gray. A choice meant to instill feelings of fear and impending doom ends up adding to this film’s boredom fest. This seems to be a general issue with the film. When making a horror film, a director is presented with numerous options and inspirations from genre classics. However, the film’s directors chose only a few and either used them too much or too little.

Acting is an element that Sound of Silence excellently butchers. Being set in Italy, the first few scenes excited me with their “bad” acting, making me think that this would be a modern Giallo, which is a subgenre of horror cinema that spawned in Italy in the ’60s and ’70s. Giallo is characterized by many elements, one of which is a general disregard for the quality of acting in favor of gratuitous violence and gore. But I soon realized that the bad acting in Sound of Silence isn’t ironic. It is just bad. It lacks any emotion, it feels bland and tasteless. In fact, it’s ultimately one of the biggest weaknesses of a film that boasts so many.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario where I would recommend Sound of Silence to anyone. It could’ve been decent with better pacing and acting and with better attention to its plot. Nevertheless, it just ends up being just a collection of jump scares separated by long, boring scenes that could challenge even the most patient of horror fans.

For something that was directed by three people, you'd expect a well-thought-out execution of an otherwise derivative and referential horror film. I wanna say I misunderstood this when I got through the middle of it but the negatives were tingling my sensations more and eventually got me irritated. This has some of the worst writing choices for a character I've ever seen. She kept instigating or even perhaps teasing the spirits or ghosts when she knew they'd appear if she turns that radio on. I understood the purpose of why she had to do it but it was just done so annoyingly and repetitively.

If you have an affinity towards "happens in one night" kind of horror then I'd say…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

This has an obviously low budget but interesting premise. Despite old school visuals (think early 90s television), some of the jump scares starting out - and before they are seen a hundred times - are effective.

It's intriguing that common transmissions tunneling its way inside - such as radiowaves, telephone calls, satellite signals and even the doorbell - are the conduits for the spirits.

With the repetition I was worried that was going to wear out that premise... And I was right to be worried.

It's a very basic ghost story but with the microbudget the effects are often so cheap they're laughable... And, tragically, it descends into small tropes and the typical responses drowning any early promise of this…

Sound of Silence had a sound story but not enough to push the potential to be a solid horror.

The story felt familiar to movies like Insidious and The Conjuring to some extent while trying to be its own thing. The atmosphere and drama was there. However, the potential felt a bit lacking in make some solid scares and convincing characters worth investing into.

The movie wasn't a bad watch. In fact this was pretty passable with how they used the audio and hitting into some past trauma. Overall this was an okay watch for this mild horror thriller.

Italy’s attempt at birthing a franchise based on cursed artifacts à la The Conjuring is mostly a dud.  There’s actually some decent atmosphere early on before it dissolves into something entirely silly.  The movie is also overly reliant on jump-scares.  Some are effective but a majority of them are executed in the most predictable manner.  Also, once shit hits the fan, it annoyed me that the lead didn’t have a sense of urgency to get out of the house.  Instead, it felt like she was toying and purposely provoking the ghosts LOL. Then, she would start hollering and run away when they did appear.  Wut?

The acting is somewhat poor.  I understand English might not be all of the…

Do you want to watch the scariest horror film in 2023 so far?  Then watch this film. I think it’s a scary movie. Something is going on in Emmas parents home. The Dad brought home a radio and on certain frequencies “ it talks”!  The Dad freaked out and hit the Mom. Both are in hospital, so Emma and Peter are in the house while parents get better. Emma tells Peter she is scared. Peter hears nothing. But then a story is told about “ a quiet game” the family must play when Dad comes home because “ the War” effected him badly. Ok so these voices are in radio because of “ Dad”. They get rid of radio! The radio is sold to a collector.  I see reviews which trash this movie, but it scared me!

RAVING REVIEW: Today, we're in for a hauntingly unique time as we delve into SOUND OF SILENCE, a horror film that will keep you guessing throughout the film. This film takes a unique approach to exploring the afterlife, as we witness a haunted item terrorizing the protagonist in her family's Italian home.

The movie is split into three parts; while the film showed some improvement as it progressed, it had a steep hill to climb. However, the payoff is worth it as the story continues, leading to the film's crescendo, which has a solid ending. The film's directors succeeded in seamlessly connecting the themes of obsession and a haunted…

SOUND OF SILENCE is brought to us by T3, a writer/director trio consisting of Alessandro Antonaci, Stefano Mandalà, and Daniel Lascar. The group divides up other individual creative positions, with (at least for SOUND OF SILENCE ) Antonaci as cinematographer, Mandalà as production designer, and Lascar as stunt coordinator.

This suggests a lot of teamwork that could go either way. In this case, it adds up to a visually stylish ghost story that makes up in jump scares what it lacks in plot complications.

Margherita (Alessandra Pizzullo) and Peter (Peter Stephen Wolmarans) are a nice middle-aged couple living in a pleasant, somewhat isolated two-story house in the Italian countryside. Peter likes to tinker with fixing up old technology, which can be found all over their home (check out the manual typewriter and rotary phone, for starters).

So, when Peter starts repairing a ‘30s-style radio in his attic workshop, it seems like no big deal – until a ghost appears, coming closer every time the radio makes a sound.

In an American big city (we know this because the clock radio cheerily broadcasts, “Good morning U.S.A.!”), Margherita and Peter’s daughter Emma (Penelope Sangiorgi) freezes up on a singing audition. We gather from her boyfriend Seba’s (Rocco Marazitta) reaction that this isn’t the first time.

Before Seba can get too far into the “You’ll nail it next time” pep talk, Emma receives a phone call that both of her parents are in the hospital. She of course is on the next plane to Italy, accompanied by the devoted Seba.

The doctor thinks that Peter has been abusing Margherita and she fought back, but Emma can’t believe it, and we know better. Margherita tells Emma not to go to the house, but since mother doesn’t tell daughter why she shouldn’t go to the house, Emma decides she and Seba will stay there.

We can guess a lot of what’s going to happen, although the food truck in the absolute middle of nowhere is an interesting touch (not being conversant with the placement of such businesses in Italy, this reviewer cannot ascertain whether this is normal or not).

What makes SOUND OF SILENCE work is that, despite the general familiarity of the story, the T3 filmmakers create an environment that’s legitimately spooky.

There’s also a consistent visual aesthetic. Even though we’re mostly in the present, there’s a spareness and sepia tones in the art direction and cinematography that suggest the old-fashioned tone is deliberate.

SOUND OF SILENCE doesn’t try to reinvent the horror wheel. It just wants to be reasonably creepy without being dated. In this, it succeeds.

In English and Italian.

‘The Sound of Silence’ Review: Plenty to Hear, but What Does It Mean?

Peter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones star in a drama for your ears that brings big ideas but does more telling than showing.

sound of silence movie review 2023

By Aisha Harris

There’s something about a movie that goes out of its way to embrace the quiet — to make the audience really listen and be fully aware of every snippet of sound or sliver of silence — that feels refreshingly rare. In a medium that can be so reliant on character banter and song-stuffed sound cues, it can be powerful to be forced to concentrate on hearing noiselessness, so that the little sound that does occur is that much more meaningful .

“ The Sound of Silence ,” the feature debut of the director Michael Tyburski (who also wrote the screenplay with Ben Nabors), attempts to wield this power but does more telling than showing. Peter Sarsgaard plays Peter Lucien, a professional house tuner in New York City who assesses the ambient noise in people’s homes (electrical appliances, wind patterns) to pinpoint the source of their anxiety, depression or fatigue. Peter, a quiet observer deliberate in his choice of words, is painstaking in his efforts: The job is his life, and when he’s not acting as an apartment-whisperer, he’s out and about all over the city with tuning forks, mapping out the sonic patterns of each block and neighborhood.

Peter’s near-fanatical devotion to his work has served him well as the movie begins: His many satisfied clients leave him voice mail messages of effusive praise for changing their lives; he’s been profiled in The New Yorker. But he becomes unsettled when his diagnosis and proposed solution for Ellen (Rashida Jones), a nonprofit worker, fails to solve her chronic sleep issues. As he tries to get to the root of her problems (including the lingering pain from the demise of a long-term relationship), they develop something like a friendship, or an amiable case of opposites-must-interact.

The movie swells with grand ideas about our relationships with sound and with one another, often put forth through Peter’s soft-spoken voice, which oscillates between calming and eerie, or through the quiet and hum of city noises and orchestral music. But there isn’t much there there — the film’s sonic experimentation is decoration hung on a thin character. As stirring as Sarsgaard is in conveying Peter’s eccentricities, he can’t quite transcend the well-worn narrative trope of the obsessive oddball (usually a white man) who is unable to connect deeply with others.

Tyburski and Nabors do question their enigmatic protagonist somewhat: Though Peter’s research attracts the interest of a tech company hoping to capitalize on his findings, it’s met with skepticism from the academics and scholars he wants to please most. The suggestion that Peter, like the Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, might not be as groundbreaking as he thinks is the most compelling and least proverbial conflict raised in the movie — yet the screenplay skims over it to focus on the conventional dynamic between the often irascible Peter and the more optimistic Ellen, who challenges him on his rigid view of the world.

“The Sound of Silence” wants to be heard, but, in the end, doesn’t have much to say.

In this ambitious, tonally intriguing comedic drama, Peter Saarsgard plays a self-described “room tuner.” He provides a useful service to troubled New Yorkers who can’t quite put their fingers on what’s costing them sleep and/or a general sense of ease. He examines their dwelling spaces, armed with tuning forks and an array of vintage-looking audio equipment. He identifies an out-of-tune element—frequently it’s a toaster with a dissonant, barely audible hum—mutes or replaces it, and voila, the inhabitant is able to rest again.

The New York City in which the character, Peter Lucian, lives and works is itself oddly more quiet than the real-life Manhattan. This detail is one of the several crucial ways in which the movie misfires. Directed by Michael Tyburski , who cowrote the script with Ben Nabors (elaborating on a prior short film that the two collaborated on), the movie is a distinctive showcase for Saarsgard’s lowkey intensity. He’s utterly convincing as a deep wonk, standing in Central Park, oblivious to the life around him, preoccupied with his tuning forks.

Lucian has a kind of unified field theory of urban acoustics, and it’s attracting attention from a big bad corporation at the same time that he’s failing to find a solution for one of his clients, Ellen, played by Rashida Jones at a register far more subdued than we’re accustomed to. The mystery Lucian can’t get his head around may have more to do with an absence of sound than anything currently in Ellen’s apartment—he dimly declines to follow-up when Ellen lets him know that a boyfriend has recently moved out.

For Lucian, the tuner gig is more about the individual he’s helping; as much as the potential money involved in selling out may smell sweet, he can’t bear the thought of being commoditized. A research assistant ( Tony Revolori ) detects no such downside. An editor of a scholarly journal responds with incredulity to Lucian’s personal approach, saying she thought his theories a joke.

As treatments of obsession go, the movie pitches itself significantly to the right of such antecedents as “ The Conversation ” and “ Pi .” As eaten up as he gets, Lucian remains quiet, bottled up, reticent. In keeping with his tweedy clothing, the cinematography takes on a dun, at times almost sepia tone—this is a New York in which it’s almost always autumn, it seems. The approach is intriguing but gets a little monochromatic after a while.

I used to work in consumer electronics, and I actually knew people who styled themselves as room tuners, pros who put pillows up in corners and optimized speaker placement so you could get the most out of your hi-fi equipment. Contemporary A/V receivers come with little microphones you use for the box to “sweep” the room and optimize the surround output. This movie seems to delight in showing a lot of vintage electronics equipment: microcassette recorders, transcribing pedals, devices for taking down “room tone.” If you’re a maven or even vaguely curious there’s a lot of production value value to be derived here. The human story that the filmmakers want to drape over their atmosphere, though, never quite connects.

After using the Lenire device for an hour each day for 12 weeks, Victoria Banks says her tinnitus is "barely noticeable."

Imagine if every moment is filled with a high-pitched buzz or ring that you can't turn off.

More than 25 million adults in the U.S., have a condition called tinnitus, according to the American Tinnitus Association. It can be stressful, even panic-inducing and difficult to manage. Dozens of factors can contribute to the onset of tinnitus, including hearing loss, exposure to loud noise or a viral illness.

There's no cure, but there are a range of strategies to reduce the symptoms and make it less bothersome, including hearing aids, mindfulness therapy , and one newer option – a device approved by the FDA to treat tinnitus using electrical stimulation of the tongue.

The device has helped Victoria Banks, a singer and songwriter in Nashville, Tenn., who developed tinnitus about three years ago.

"The noise in my head felt like a bunch of cicadas," Banks says. "It was terrifying." The buzz made it difficult for her to sing and listen to music. "It can be absolutely debilitating," she says.

Tinnitus Bothers Millions Of Americans. Here's How To Turn Down The Noise

Shots - Health News

Tinnitus bothers millions of americans. here's how to turn down the noise.

Banks tried taking dietary supplements , but those didn't help. She also stepped up exercise, but that didn't bring relief either. Then she read about a device called Lenire, which was approved by the FDA in March 2023. It includes a plastic mouthpiece with stainless steel electrodes that electrically stimulate the tongue. It is the first device of its kind to be approved for tinnitus.

"This had worked for other people, and I thought I'm willing to try anything at this point," Banks recalls.

She sought out audiologist Brian Fligor, who treats severe cases of tinnitus in the Boston area. Fligor was impressed by the results of a clinical trial that found 84% of participants who tried Lenire experienced a significant reduction in symptoms. He became one of the first providers in the U.S. to use the device with his patients. Fligor also served on an advisory panel assembled by the company who developed it.

"A good candidate for this device is somebody who's had tinnitus for at least three months," Fligor says, emphasizing that people should be evaluated first to make sure there's not an underlying medical issue.

Tinnitus often accompanies hearing loss, but Victoria Banks' hearing was fine and she had no other medical issue, so she was a good candidate.

Banks used the device for an hour each day for 12 weeks. During the hour-long sessions, the electrical stimulation "tickles" the tongue, she says. In addition, the device includes a set of headphones that play a series of tones and ocean-wave sounds.

The device works, in part, by shifting the brain's attention away from the buzz. We're wired to focus on important information coming into our brains, Fligor says. Think of it as a spotlight at a show pointed at the most important thing on the stage. "When you have tinnitus and you're frustrated or angry or scared by it, that spotlight gets really strong and focused on the tinnitus," Fligor says.

"It's the combination of what you're feeling through the nerves in your tongue and what you're hearing through your ears happening in synchrony that causes the spotlight in your brain to not be so stuck on the tinnitus," Fligor explains.

A clinical trial found 84% of people who used the device experienced a significant reduction in symptoms.

"It unsticks your spotlight" and helps desensitize people to the perceived noise that their tinnitus creates, he says.

Banks says the ringing in her ears did not completely disappear, but now it's barely noticeable on most days.

"It's kind of like if I lived near a waterfall and the waterfall was constantly going," she says. Over time, the waterfall sound fades out of consciousness.

"My brain is now focusing on other things," and the buzz is no longer so distracting. She's back to listening to music, writing music, and performing music." I'm doing all of those things," she says.

When the buzz comes back into focus, Banks says a refresher session with the device helps.

A clinical trial found that 84% of people who tried Lenire , saw significant improvements in their condition. To measure changes, the participants took a questionnaire that asked them to rate how much tinnitus was impacting their sleep, sense of control, feelings of well-being and quality of life. After 12 weeks of using the device, participants improved by an average of 14 points.

"Where this device fits into the big picture, is that it's not a cure-all, but it's quickly become my go-to," for people who do not respond to other ways of managing tinnitus, Fligor says.

One down-side is the cost. Banks paid about $4,000 for the Lenire device, and insurance doesn't cover it. She put the expense on her credit card and paid it off gradually.

Fligor hopes that as the evidence of its effectiveness accumulates, insurers will begin to cover it. Despite the cost, more than 80% of participants in the clinical trial said they would recommend the device to a friend with tinnitus.

But, it's unclear how long the benefits last. Clinical trials have only evaluated Lenire over a 1-year period. "How durable are the effects? We don't really know yet," says audiologist Marc Fagelson, the scientific advisory committee chair of the American Tinnitus Association. He says research is promising but there's still more to learn.

Fagelson says the first step he takes with his patients is an evaluation for hearing loss. Research shows that hearing aids can be an effective treatment for tinnitus among people who have both tinnitus and hearing loss, which is much more common among older adults. An estimated one-third of adults 65 years of age and older who have hearing loss, also have tinnitus.

"We do see a lot of patients, even with very mild loss, who benefit from hearing aids," Fagelson says, but in his experience it's about 50-50 in terms of improving tinnitus. Often, he says people with tinnitus need to explore options beyond hearing aids.

Bruce Freeman , a scientist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, says he's benefitted from both hearing aids and Lenire. He was fitted for the device in Ireland where it was developed, before it was available in the U.S.

Freeman agrees that the ringing never truly disappears, but the device has helped him manage the condition. He describes the sounds that play through the device headphones as very calming and "almost hypnotic" and combined with the tongue vibration, it's helped desensitize him to the ring.

Freeman – who is a research scientist – says he's impressed with the results of research, including a study published in Nature, Scientific Reports that points to significant improvements among clinical trial participants with tinnitus.

Freeman experienced a return of his symptoms when he stopped using the device. "Without it the tinnitus got worse," he says. Then, when he resumed use, it improved.

Freeman believes his long-term exposure to noisy instruments in his research laboratory may have played a role in his condition, and also a neck injury from a bicycle accident that fractured his vertebra. "All of those things converged," he says.

Freeman has developed several habits that help keep the high-pitched ring out of his consciousness and maintain good health. "One thing that does wonders is swimming," he says, pointing to the swooshing sound of water in his ears. "That's a form of mindfulness," he explains.

When it comes to the ring of tinnitus, "it comes and goes," Freeman says. For now, it has subsided into the background, he told me with a sense of relief. "The last two years have been great," he says – a combination of the device, hearing aids and the mindfulness that comes from a swim.
