We offer over 70 competitive events for HOSA members to choose from. They fall into three categories— tests, skills, and presentations— some are individual, some require a partner and some a group. In MN we have two conferences that you can compete at Mid-winter and State Leadership Conference (SLC). If you place top three in any event at SLC you can advance to the International Leadership Conference .

Behavioral health.
Behavioral Health Guidelines
Event Summary Behavioral Health provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills surrounding psychology, the mind, mental health, and substance use disorders. This competitive event consists of a written test with a tiebreaker essay question. This event aims to inspire members to learn about and promote mental health resilience as well as learn how to support those in recovery, their families, and the health community.
Dress Code Competitors must be in official HOSA uniform or proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress.
Cultural Diversity & Disparities
Cultural Diversity & Disparities Guidelines
Event Summary Cultural Diversity & Disparities in Healthcare provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills regarding cultural competence in the promotion of better health. This competitive event consists of a written test with a tiebreaker essay question. This event aims to inspire members to learn about cultural diversity, identify disparities in healthcare, and understand cultural differences. Dress Code Competitors must be in official HOSA uniform or proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress.

Human Growth and Development Guidelines
Event Summary Human Growth & Development provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills regarding biophysical, mental/cognitive, social, and emotional development in the human lifespan. This competitive event consists of a written test with a tiebreaker essay question. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about growth and development across the life span.

Medical Law & Ethics
Medical Law and Ethics
Event Summary Medical Law & Ethics provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills regarding U.S. medical law, ethics and bioethics. This competitive event consists of a written test with a tiebreaker essay question. This event aims to inspire members to learn about ethical and legal terms, as well as how to analyze, synthesize and evaluate information related to this field.

Medical Math Guidelines
Event Summary Medical Math provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to identify, solve, and apply mathematical principles. This competitive event consists of a written test with tiebreaker questions. This event aims to inspire members to learn about the integration of mathematics in health care, including temperature, weights, and measures used in the health community.
Medical Reading
Medical Reading Guidelines
Event Summary Medical Reading provides Secondary and Postsecondary/Collegiate members with the opportunity to improve their reading comprehension and understanding of special topics related to leadership development and the health community. This competitive event shall be a written test consisting of information and knowledge gained from reading the selected books for the current year. Competitors will apply, analyze, synthesize and/or evaluate the reading material in a multiple choice test and one tiebreaker essay question. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and apply the knowledge gained from reading medical and leadership books.
Medical Spelling
Medical Spelling Guidelines
Event Summary Medical Spelling provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills regarding definitions and spelling of medical terms. This competitive event consists of two rounds. Round One is a written, multiple choice test and Round Two is a “spelldown” where competitors spell terms in front of judges. This event aims to inspire members to become skilled in medical spelling.
Dress Code Competitors must be in official HOSA uniform or in proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress in Round One. Competitors who are not dressed appropriately for Round Two will not be allowed to compete.
Medical Terminology
Medical Terminology Guidelines
Event Summary Medical Terminology provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills regarding prefixes, suffixes, word roots, as well as anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and occupations related to the health field. This competitive event consists of a written test with tiebreaker questions and aims to inspire members to learn about terms used in health professions and health specialties.
Nutrition Guidelines
Event Summary The Nutrition test provides HOSA members with the opportunity to explore and learn about the relationship of nutrition and wellness and to assess knowledge common in this health field. This competitive event consists of a written test with a tiebreaker essay question. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and to apply and analyze information related to nutrition and health.

Clinical Speciality
Clinical Speciality Guidelines
Event Summary Clinical Specialty provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills about a health career of their choosing. This competitive event consists of three items: the development of a career portfolio, a video demonstration of a selected skill common to the chosen health career and a live presentation to the judges. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about a health-related career and become skilled future health professionals.

Dental Science
Dental Science Guidelines
Event Summary Dental Science provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required for dental careers. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds. Round One is a written, multiple-choice test and the top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for the skills assessment. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about careers in the dental field.
Family Medicine Physician
Event Summary The Family Medicine Physician competitive event provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge about this career path through interviews, research, and a peer presentation. Competitors will conduct interviews to learn more about family medicine, and then will share their finding with their peers through a presentation. Competitors will present their peer presentation to a panel of judges, showcasing what they have learned. This event aims to inspire members to learn about the dynamic field of Family Medicine and ultimately help AAFP in their goal to ensure that no less than 25% of medical school seniors select family medicine as their specialty by the year 2030.

Event Summary The phlebotomist event provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required in phlebotomy. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds. Epidemiology Guidelines
Event Summary Epidemiology provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge about health and disease in populations. This competitive event consists of a written examination of concepts related to the study of epidemiology with a tiebreaker essay question. Competitors are expected to recognize, identify, define, interpret and apply these concepts in a multiple-choice test. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and improve their scientific literacy as well as provide insights into public health careers.

Mental Health Promotion
Mental Health Promotion Guidelines
Technology Addiction: How To Protect Ourselves
The Mental Health Promotion event provides HOSA members with an introduction to Mental Health topics with a grounding in prevention. The event is built on the understanding that “mental health IS health” and that we must think about taking care of our mental health just as we do our physical health. This competitive event consists of a team of 2 to 6 members. All team members must first complete the Be There Certificate online course to help increase their mental health literacy. Teams will then create and publish a social media campaign for their peers centered on building and promoting protective factors around a selected mental health topic. This social media campaign will be pre-judged digitally prior to ILC. Teams will present their social media campaign and process to a panel of judges at ILC. This event aims to provide information on how to support someone struggling with their mental health and to inspire future health professionals to promote the importance of mental health in their schools and communities.
Competitors shall wear the official HOSA uniform or proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress. All team members must be properly dressed to receive bonus points
Public Health
Public Health Guidelines
Public Health provides HOSA members with the opportunity to develop an effective, dynamic, and creative presentation that informs the public about an important public health issue. The team consists of 2-6 members. The event consists of two rounds. In the initial round the team has the opportunity to convince a panel of judges of the need to view their entire presentation. The highest scoring teams will advance to Round Two where a panel of judges will view the entire presentation. The event aims to inspire members to be proactive health professionals by producing a presentation that educates the public about a selected public health topic.
2022-2023 Public Health Topic: Heart Healthy for Life: What You Need to Know Now The World Health Organization lists the number one cause of death globally as ischemic heart disease – 16% of the world’s total deaths is due to ischemic heart disease. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is happening to younger adults at a greater frequency. Heart disease can happen at any age. Further, it is noted that conditions and risks are appearing at younger ages. Increasing the overall cardiovascular health in adults is listed as a 2030 objective in HealthyPeople.gov. Explore healthy living @ heart.org or texasheart.org as starting points to determine how youth can prevent the development of cardiovascular conditions. In your public health presentation, your team should educate the public about a heart healthy lifestyle for life. Information should be provided on the impact of cardiovascular disease and how to obtain heart health for life.
Competitors may wear official HOSA uniform, proper business attire, costumes or any attire appropriate to the presentation. There will not be a dress bonus for presentation dress since teams may wear whatever they wish to wear.

Event Summary Extemporaneous Writing provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required for writing an essay. This competitive event consists of a secret topic related to health and a written essay based on the given secret topic. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about health through learned writing skills.
Health Career Photography
Health Career Photography Guidelines
Event Summary Health Care Photography provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge about different health careers and analyze them through the medium of digital photography. Competitors will photograph three different health professionals performing an aspect of their job, edit the photos using computer software technology as needed, provide a written description of the career and then may present their three printed pictures to a panel of judges. This event aims to inspire members to use photography as a means to explore health careers.
Healthy Lifestyles
Healthy Lifestyles Guidelines
Event Summary Healthy Lifestyle provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to understand healthy living and the impact on health throughout the life span. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds. Round One is a written, multiple choice test and the top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for a presentation. In addition, each competitor will focus on one personal healthy lifestyle goal and document his or her efforts in a personalized portfolio. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about health literacy topics and to develop healthy habits for a lifetime.

Interviewing Skills * (IDEA)
Interviewing Skills Guidelines (Must have an IEP)
Event Summary Interviewing Skills provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to successfully apply and interview for employment and internship opportunities (for college, medical school, professional career, etc.). This competitive event requires competitors to prepare a personal statement, resume, and digital profile and then participate in a mock job interview with judges. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about applying and interviewing for health-related positions and experiences. This event is specifically for HOSA members who are classified under IDEA.
Job Seeking Skills
Job Seeking Skills Guidelines
Event Summary Job Seeking Skills provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to successfully apply and interview for employment and internship opportunities (for college, medical school, professional career, etc.). This competitive event requires competitors to prepare a personal statement, resume, and digital profile and then participate in a mock job interview with judges. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about applying and interviewing for health-related positions and experiences.
Organizational Leadership
Organizational Leadership Guidelines
Event Summary The purpose of the event is two-fold: 1) To assist State/Chartered Associations with selecting their Voting Delegates if a method does not already exist and 2) To encourage HOSA members to develop and apply their knowledge of the HOSA organization and Parliamentary Procedure to represent their State/Chartered Associations at the International Leadership Conference as an official Voting Delegate.

Event Summary Prepared Speaking provides HOSA members with the opportunity to improve knowledge and skills surrounding effective oral communication. This competitive event requires competitors to develop a speech related to a selected national topic. The topic for the year aligns to the HOSA membership theme, which is announced at the conclusion of the International Leadership Conference every year.

Researched Persuasive Writing and Speaking
Event Summary Researched Persuasive Writing and Speaking provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required for researching a health issue, preparing written documentation supporting a thesis, and presenting information orally. This competitive event requires competitors to develop a speech and written paper, either for or against, the provided annual health topic.

Research Poster Guidelines
Event Summary Research Poster provides HOSA members with the opportunity to think critically about a health-related issue in their community; pose a research question surrounding the chosen topic; and conduct research on that topic. All competitors will develop a Research Poster showcasing their findings and present their research to a panel of judges.

Teamwork Events
Biomedical debate.
Biomedical Debate Guidelines
Event Summary Biomedical Debate provides members with the opportunity to use debate as a platform for researching the pros and cons of a biomedical issue and showcasing what has been learned. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds and each team consists of 3-4 people. Team members will participate in the Round One written test containing questions about the annual biomedical topic. The teams with the highest average score from the test will qualify for the Round Two debate(s). This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals by researching a given health topic, evaluating, discussing, and thinking critically about the issue, and refining verbal communication skills surrounding a complex biomedical issue.
Dress Code Competitors shall wear the HOSA uniform or proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress. All team members must be properly dressed to receive bonus points.
Community Awareness
Community Awareness Guidelines
Event Summary Community Awareness provides HOSA members with the opportunity to educate their community about one health and/or safety related issue of local, state and/or national interest. Teams of 2-6 members plan a community campaign surrounding a selected topic that will impact the community as a whole. Teams develop a portfolio that documents and explains the community campaign and activities. The team presents the community campaign to a panel of judges, using the portfolio as documentation of their accomplishments. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and promote community awareness of health related issues.
Dress Code Competitors must be in official HOSA uniform or in proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress. All team members must be properly dressed to receive bonus points.
Creative Problem Solving
Creative Problem Solving Guidelines
Event Summary Creative Problem Solving provides members with the opportunity to analyze the problem-solving process and to work as a team to apply their problem-solving skills in creating a solution to a hypothetical health or HOSA-related problem. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds and each team consists of 2-6 people. Round One will consist of a written test and the score will be used to qualify the team for Round Two. In Round Two teams will be given a potential problem related to HOSA, the health community, or a specific health issue and have 30 minutes to analyze the problem. At the end of the preparation time, teams will have eight (8) minutes to present their solution to a panel of judges. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and utilize higher order thinking to solve complex challenges.
Dress Code Competitors shall wear the HOSA uniform or proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded in both rounds for proper dress. All team members must be properly dressed to receive bonus points.

Event Summary Forensic Science provides HOSA members with the opportunity to work as a team to apply their knowledge and skills in creating a solution to a forensic science-related problem. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds and each team consists of 2 people. Round One is a written test and will evaluate the team’s understanding of forensic science. The test score from Round One will be used to qualify the team for Round Two. In Round Two, teams will be given a case study to analyze that may include physical evidence and written information such as police reports and an autopsy. Teams will have six (6) minutes to view the “crime scene” and thirty (30) minutes to write their conclusions with supporting evidence. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and critically examine elements of a forensic case.
Dress Code Competitors shall wear the HOSA uniform, proper business attire, medical scrubs, or polo and khakis. Bonus points will be awarded in both rounds for proper dress. All team members must be properly dressed to receive bonus points.

Event Summary Health Career Display provides members with the opportunity to research a career of interest, create a display board of associated career materials, and improve their presentation skills as they communicate the career information to others. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds and each team consists of 2 people. Round One is the judging of the Health Display Board. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two for the presentation. This event aims to inspire members to become future health professionals by exciting them about a career of their choosing.

Health Education Guidelines
Event Summary Health Education provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to select a health- related concept or instructional objective, then prepare a lesson for a targeted group of learners, provide instruction, and evaluate results. This competitive event consists of a portfolio and presentation to judges and each team consists of 2-6 members. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals by educating others on health-related concepts.
HOSA Bowl Guidelines
Event Summary HOSA Bowl provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills on various topics and situations in health, current health topics, HOSA, and parliamentary procedure. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds and each team consists of exactly four (4) members. Round One is a written test. Top scoring teams advance to Round Two and compete by giving appropriate responses to items presented by a moderator in a “buzzer style” round. These items may be in the form of questions, incomplete statements, and/or definitions and may be multi-answer items. Winners will be determined by a series of elimination rounds as described in the event tournament bracket. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and motivate them to participate in teams, while learning about health, HOSA , current health topics and parliamentary procedure topics.
Dress Code Competitors must be in official HOSA uniform or in proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress in Round One. All team members must be properly dressed to receive the bonus points. Teams who are not dressed appropriately for Round Two may not be allowed to compete.
Medical Innovation

Event Summary Medical Innovation provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to impact the future of health and or the delivery of healthcare through the development of a new medical innovation. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds and each team consists of 2-4 people. In Round One, judges will evaluate the created medical innovation and the top scoring teams will advance to Round Two for the oral presentation. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals by sharing their medical innovation, understanding, and outcomes with others.

Parliamentary Procedure
Parliamentary Procedure Guidelines
Event Summary Parliamentary Procedure provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to conduct a simulated business meeting by using parliamentary procedure. This competitive event consists of two rounds and each team consists of 5-8 members. Round One is a written test and the top- scoring teams will advance to Round Two to conduct a demonstrated meeting with a secret topic. The demonstrated meeting should show the participant’s knowledge of parliamentary procedure and should follow the agenda given. The secret topic will include four subsidiary and privileged motions commonly used during a business meeting. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals by learning the importance of cooperation, fair decision-making, and competitive performance.
Dress Code Competitors shall wear the HOSA uniform or proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress in both rounds. All team members must be properly dressed to receive bonus points.

Yearly Topic : Fentanyl Will Kill You
Event Summary Public Service Announcement provides members with the opportunity to use technology to produce a video public service announcement that informs the community about an important health issue. This competitive event consists of one round and each team consists of 2-6 people. All teams will show their PSA to a panel of judges as well as give a presentation about their creative process. This event aims to inspire members to be pro-active future health professionals by producing a PSA to promote a health service organization, bring awareness to a health situation, or educate the public at large regarding health and well-being. 2022-2023 PSA Topic: How to Talk to Friends and Family about Mental Health According to Health and Wellness Magazine, the COVID – 19 pandemic has had a significant impact on people’s mental health. A study completed by Boston University shows that depression rates tripled during the first year of the pandemic. The website, mentalhealth.gov, provides important information about recognizing signs of mental health problems and connecting people to help. Further, it provides information on how to start a conversation regarding mental health and how to find help for a friend in trouble. Successful PSA’s will educate the community on the resources available and helpful strategies for talking to those suffering with mental health issues. Let’s make sure our friends and family know there is help available for them and how much they matter to us!

If the event you are competing in includes an "R", you must start at the Regional Conference to qualify for SLC.
If the event has only an S/I, you must qualify for SLC via Online Testing (with the exc e ption of Recognition Events).
Top 7 at each Regional Conference qualify for SLC, and top scores (number is variable by event) on online testing in those events qualify for SLC.
Top Three in each event at SLC will advance to the International Leaders hip Conferenc e!
Recognition Events have no qualifier in order to attend SLC. Just follow the guidelines to determine whether/how you would be able to receive recognition at the SLC.

CALL FOR POSTER AND SHORT RESEARCH PRESENTATION ABSTRACTS
We are pleased to accept abstracts for our virtual short research presentations and rapid-fire poster session. The deadline to submit an abstract is September 3, 2024, at 11:59 PM CT. Please note that you DO NOT have to be formally associated with any National Institutes of Health (NIH) Centers for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), IDeA Program Infrastructure for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR), or IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) to submit an abstract.
After submission, all abstracts will be reviewed by the participating COBRE, IDeA-CTR, and INBRE review teams. If necessary, independent reviewers with subject-matter expertise may also review submissions.
Authors whose abstracts are selected will be notified via e-mail by Friday, September 27, 2024. There will be two short research presentation sessions on November 6, 2024. The first session is scheduled for 1:00pm-2:00pm CT (2:00pm-3:00pm ET) and the second session is scheduled for 2:30pm-3:30pm CT (3:30pm-4:30pm ET). The rapid-fire poster session is scheduled for November 7, 2024, from 1:00pm-2:30pm CT (2:00pm-3:30pm ET). A timeline of important dates is provided below.

For this year’s virtual symposium, those selected to participate in the short research presentations should prepare a presentation lasting no longer than ten minutes in length (and with a slideshow not to exceed 12 slides). Slides will be required to be submitted to the RDAR COBRE by Monday, October 28, 2024. Time and slide limits are in place to ensure that presenters will be able to overview their research within each session’s allotted time (exactly one hour).
A NOTE ON THE RAPID-FIRE POSTER SESSION:
The goal of the rapid-fire poster session is to provide an energetic, fast-paced format to showcase a multitude of projects in substance use research. Those selected to participate in the rapid-fire poster session will be given three minutes to present their poster to the audience. Successful applicants will be expected to provide a single poster slide to the RDAR COBRE by Monday, October 28, 2024.
