If you are on the journey of applying to universities, crafting a compelling personal statement can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. But fear not; we are here to help you navigate this path more easily. We have curated three exemplary personal statements that serve as shining examples of what universities look for in applicants.

These personal statements focus on Accounting, Biomedical and Engineering applications and embody quality, clarity, and individuality, compellingly showcasing how to present your academic interests, extracurricular activities, and personal experiences.

However, it is crucial to remember that these are examples to guide and inspire you, not templates to be copied. Growing up in Doha, Qatar, my educational journey significantly changed when my family relocated to Accra, Ghana. This transition was challenging, particularly as I grappled with foundational lessons in mathematics that I had missed in the first grade. However, under the guidance of a supportive teacher in year nine who recommended math tutoring, I discovered that practice and understanding the basics could help me overcome my struggles.

In secondary school, I ventured into commerce, accountancy, and economics. Initially, I was apprehensive about studying accountancy, associating it with my previous difficulties with math ematics .

However, under the mentorship of a dedicated teacher, I reali s ed that accountancy was a different realm altogether – one that I found surprisingly enjoyable.

My passion for accountancy was further ignited when I managed my uncle’s business accounts in Accra. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply the theoretical knowledge I had learned in school, deepening my interest in the field. This experience was further supplemented by a placement at a local accounting firm where I shadowed a practising accountant and auditor. These opportunities gave me a glimpse into the daily operations of an accounting firm, solidifying my aspiration to become a professional accountant.

I am determined to further my education at a high-ranking university in the UK and seek accreditation from the ACCA after completing my degree in the UK. The UK’s world-renowned education system, diverse culture, and the exciting opportunities it offers international students have always appealed to me. Moreover, the UK is the hub of many prestigious accounting firms, presenting numerous opportunities for internships and employment upon graduation.

To prepare for this journey, I have completed the International Foundation Year with NCUK, studying Mathematics for Business, Business Studies, and Economics, along with the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course.

This comprehensive program me has equipped me with the skills necessary to thrive in the UK’s rigorous academic environment.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I enjoy chess and volunteer at a local community centre in my spare time. These hobbies have honed my strategic thinking, logic, and teamwork skills, which will benefit my studies and future career.

I aspire to work with an international accounting firm, contributing to their success with my skills. Eventually, I aim to establish my accounting firm. A degree from your esteemed university will give me the knowledge, skills, and connections needed to achieve these goals.

In conclusion, I am eager to embark on this academic journey and am confident in achieving academic and non-academic success at your university.

Accounting Personal Statement

I am inspired and motivated by my family and by my own general aptitude for mathematical subjects to pursue a degree in accounting and to pursue a career in the field. During my summer vacations, I worked in the accounting department of my father’s company and observed the accountants at work and learned a lot from them. Upon graduation, my immediate plans are to return to my father’s business, assist him with his business, and gain experience that can be applied to my own company in the future. As China’s business environment continues to develop and expand at an unprecedented rate, I am eager to contribute to this new era of commerce. The versatility and variety of accounting appeal to me. Modern enterprises can benefit from the expertise of a well-qualified accountant in many ways, and a degree in business studies from a British university would be the best way to begin my career in this field, given the reputation of British universities and the business studies courses they offer. It is very important to my parents for me to take advantage of this opportunity to study in the UK and to expand my academic knowledge and skills.

Modern corporations, charities, governments, and individuals are eagerly seeking accountants from good universities with good degrees. The role of accountants in business planning and decision-making is becoming increasingly important, so they need good interpersonal skills in addition to academic aptitude. Complexity and analytical abilities are required for the job. In the same way that businesses rely on their lawyers, I understand that as an accountant I carry enormous responsibility. In addition to keeping up with tax and legal developments, the accountant must always be accurate and able to work under pressure. Being a member of a well-respected profession would be a great source of human satisfaction, both materially and personally. Prospects seem very promising to me.

Reading journals and following economics stories in the media has developed my interest in the business world and accountancy. Regularly updating one’s information is essential given that the situation is constantly changing. My communication skills and approachable temperament extend beyond the classroom. Both in everyday life and in my academic studies, I enjoy being part of a team. Being a team leader during my college’s summer campus taught me a lot about working with others and getting along with them. Being able to serve the needs of the elderly has always been rewarding for me as a volunteer in care homes in China. I love adventures, also I am open-minded and always ready to try new things and consider new ideas.

I have a number of languages, Chinese, fluent English and some Japanese and Korean. I believe that such skills are an immense asset in today’s increasingly international and globalised economic environment. I also have highly trained IT skills, which I know are now central to the accountancy profession. I am hard-working, reliable and mature in my attitude, and very much committed to my chosen career path. I have a number of friends with whom I would hope eventually to set up a joint venture company, after working for some time in my father’s firm. I am academically able, enthusiastic, energetic and ambitious, and very much look forward to a successful career. I can offer my total commitment to my chosen course and I hope you will consider my application.

Besides serving as the cornerstones of any successful business management , finance and accounting are also two of the most important building blocks of our contemporary society, and they become even more important during economic crises, like the one we are currently experiencing. Hence, I cannot see how anyone cannot become fascinated by learning more about the processes that govern capital flows and shape our world. I have grown steadily fascinated by these processes and developed an aptitude for and interest in mathematics throughout my school years, so I am confident I will be a motivated and ambitious undergraduate student in these subjects.

I have always enjoyed subjects which focus on numbers and mathematics. In addition to my studies, I also undertook maths challenges that aimed to make mathematics accessible and fun. It is this attitude to the subject that has inspired me to continue progressing to higher-level study in related subjects. My positive attitude to study also extends to other subjects, however, and I have gained valuable skills and experience from branching out into other fields. Studying Biology and Chemistry not only made good use of my mathematical skills but also encourage a logical, patient approach to problem-solving, while studying German inspired an interest in learning about other cultures and languages that will assist me in the increasingly international field of global finance.

Gaining experience within existing businesses offered an opportunity to begin to see how the principles of finance were applied in a real-world context. Through working as a customer adviser at Next, I have gained experience in working to daily targets, handling money and realising the importance of setting and adjusting financial expectations based on a variety of variables. Through occupying a customer service role I also gained the opportunity to hone communication and teamwork skills, allowing me to maintain excellent relationships with customers and colleagues. During my work experience with Edutech, I also utilised and developed these same skills, while undertaking repairs of school computers and increasing my knowledge of Information Technology and computer systems, so central to the contemporary field of finance.

I have been deeply involved in supporting both my academic and local communities, believing it is essential to help guide younger students at my school and in my neighbourhood. I have found serving as a role model for them as they overcome challenges to be immensely rewarding. I served as Senior Prefect and School Council Member, roles giving me a window into how funding decisions directly impact students – reinforcing the centrality of finance and accounting. I also volunteered with Oriel Youth Wing, establishing and running a youth club, an experience that taught me much about organization and time management while mentoring members through difficulties. Similarly, I mentored and supervised children of various ages through BEIS fun club and the Knowing Me Knowing You mentor scheme.

As a committed and ambitious student with an aptitude for mathematics, I believe I possess the intellectual ability and drive needed for undergraduate and potentially graduate studies in accounting and finance. More importantly, as someone with a well-developed social conscience, I will bring to my studies an awareness of the profound impact these subjects have on all our lives, creating extra motivation to understand and influence these fields after graduation.

Accounting and Finance Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

No one who has watched the news or read the newspapers over the last few years can doubt the importance of finance in the modern world. Since the economic crash of 2008, the economies of Britain, Europe and the wider world have been headline news, and the affects have been keenly felt by each and every one of us. I want to study finance at university not only to allow me to understand what is happening, but also to influence these events for the better.

With my parents running a long-standing family business, accounts and finance have been a large part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father has always involved us in the running of the business, explaining his decisions so that we could support him and know what was going on. However, it has been really difficult to watch as events way beyond his area of business, have caused his company to struggle, despite the hard work and dedication of him and his staff.

I have steered my studies towards the ecomomic subjects so that I can gain a better understanding of the wider picture and how this has affected my family business. I have studied maths and business studies, along with geography to give me a worldwide context for these events. As I have got older, I have also become more involved in the details of the company’s finances, gaining an in depth understanding of the mechanics of running a small business.

While I will ultimately inherit the family business from my father, I aim to spend the intervening time gaining as much experience in the wider world of finance and accounting as I can, in order to bring fresh perspectives to the way things are done. I believe the best first step on this road is to study finance and accounting at university, so that I can apply the very best practice to the business.

I am a subscriber to The Economist and regular reader of the Financial Times, which help by giving me different views and opinions on the key issues of the day. I am also a keen member of the school debating society, and enjoy being given a point of view to defend, especially if it is one that I do not personally agree with. I have even considered a career in law as a result of this, but I feel that finance and the economy are in my blood as part of my upbringing.

Of course, life is not all work, and I enjoy hill walking with my friends as well as playing for the school rugby and cricket teams. I was also part of a school project to build and race a go-cart, and was one of just a handful of people who stuck with the project to the end. This experience of working in a close-knit team was a valuable time for me and one that I will treasure, along with the second place trophy that we worked so hard for.

I believe that university life will be an education for me, not only academically, but also in a social and interpersonal way. The experience will prepare me for the working world and ultimately make me a worthy successor to my father as head of the family business.

How to Write a Personal Statement for Accounting (Best Tips)

Author: Rafal Reyzer

Your personal statement for accounting school application must reflect your deep interest in the field.

It should signify your love for numbers and your passion for business and finance. It should also provide an in-depth look into your personality and evidence that you are qualified for this course. This article will show you how to write a captivating personal statement for accounting school in the simplest yet most substantial form.

What is a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is a detailed yet concise essay that requires you to elaborate on your suitability for your desired admission program, scholarship, or job. It is a pivot part of the university and college admission procedure. Besides your academic record and experiences, the personal statement is an integral part of convincing the selection committee to consider you for admission.

young man doing research

What to Include in Your Personal Statement?

A personal statement is not a lengthy essay to be filled with your life story and fancy goals. It must be a concise, realistic, and compelling justification of why you’re the most suitable candidate to be granted admission.

Include these in your personal statement:

  • Reason(s) for choosing the
  • Proof of your deep understanding of the course you are going to study.
  • Mention academics and work experiences that apply to the course.
  • Relevance of the course to your goals.
  • The value that you can bring to the course, society, and industry.
  • Validation that you know the program and that you are making an informed decision.
  • Clear career plan after completing the course.
  • Brief of relevant skills, experiences, and potential to complete the course.

According to James Seymour, Director of Marketing and Student Recruitment at the University of Gloucestershire , universities do not want a beautifully written essay with tens of achievements but a realistic picture of a candidate with all efforts, traits, goals, and hardships that shaped him for an accounting major.

How to Write a Personal Statement for Accounting (Step-by-Step Guide)

Writing a personal statement for accounting differs slightly from writing a personal statement for other business schools. Accounting is a straightforward and practical subject, and you must justify your position in choosing such an intensive course that requires hard work. Since accounting has nothing to do with creativity, personal statements for accounting are precise, simple, short, and directly explain your interest in the subject. Here is a step-by-step guide to writing a personal statement for accounting:

1. Do Your Research

Be very sure about what and where you are applying for and why you are applying for it. Do your research on:

  • What is unique about the institute?
  • What does the course prospectus look like?
  • Who are the instructors and what is special about them?
  • What are the achievements of their alumni?
  • The importance of accounting in every industry?
  • How do technology and business dynamics affect accounting and finance ?
  • What would be the demand for accountants in the future?
  • What will you do after completing this course?
  • What value will you bring to society and industry after getting an accounting diploma?

This research will make you confident about your choice and your plans. Reflect the knowledge gained from this research into your statement. Tip: Do thorough research and make notes on the achievements of instructors, industry leaders, and related case studies. This will help you in compiling evidence-based personal statements.

2. Brainstorm and Write

Once you have done enough research and analysis on pursuing an accounting and finance program, the next step is to jot it down. Take a paper and pen, and write whatever comes to your mind regarding the course and your application. Leave the structure and language for now, and think and write whatever comes to your mind. Support your every thought with evidence from the research you did in step#1.

3. Filter it Out

Now you have a very long, unstructured, raw content, the next step is to read it and group your sentences into the following sections:

  • Introduction and Passion for the subject and institute
  • Academics and research
  • Work experience
  • The value you will bring to society and the industry
  • Hobbies, interests, and soft skills

Group sentences into the above sections and then write them in paragraph forms under each section.

arrange and refine your essay

4. Arrange and Refine

Once you categorized sentences, the next step is to arrange them in a sequence and flow. Write your sentences in sequence in each section. Refine each sentence to make it more logical, more relevant, and worth reading. Re-read each section many times and think of ways to improve it. Make sure that every single sentence is supported with an example or evidence. Tip: Instead of writing, “Accounting and finance was my favorite subject since grade 7”, write “I won a Kangaroo math and puzzle-solving competition in grade 7, which sparked my interest further in solving mathematical problems related to real-world business”

5. Analyze and Improve Sections

Once content under each section is written, the next step is to analyze each section to make it much better and more logical. Think of every section as a separate essay. Analyze each section and think about what the reader will get from it. Each section must justify your choice of accounting and finance.

6. Set the Flow

Once the content is completed, the next step is to arrange the paragraphs in a sequence. Read the individual paragraphs and make connections between them. Each new paragraph should be a smooth transition from the previous one. Arrange paragraphs in such a way that it keeps the reader engaged and gradually provides insights about you. Think of it as the art of storytelling . It goes from the introduction to the body of the story to the climax.

7. Proofread

Once done, proofread your personal statement. Re-read it several times to make it better. Make sure that it sounds strong and is not just a word waffle. Scan it for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and other errors. There are a lot of content writing and editing tools available for modern writers, one of which is Grammarly. If you are not using it yet, I suggest you download it immediately to your PC. It is very helpful.

8. Peer Check

After writing the final copy of your personal statement, get it reviewed by your friend, colleague, teacher, supervisor, and subject expert. Be open to critique. Listen to their reviews and comments, ask them what they thought while reading your statement, and then jot down the suggested improvements.

9. Don’t be Hasty in Submitting It

Yes, do not submit your personal statement along with your application if the deadline is still far off. Keep the final version with you and read it after a day or two. You will see lots of space for improvement after checking it with a fresh mind. Keep on improving and submit the best version a few days before the closing date. That’s it. We provided you with the best approach to writing a personal statement for an accounting school application. You may end up writing an amazing one if you follow these steps in a sequence. If you are still confused about structuring your accounting and finance personal statement, here is how you can do that.

How to Structure Personal Statement for Accounting and Finance

Making a general structure or outline for your personal statement will make your writing ten times easier and will give it a natural flow. The widely accepted personal statements usually follow the following structure:

Opening Paragraph

Begin your personal statement with an interesting opening paragraph. It is a very crucial part of your essay as it draws the reader in. Mention your interest in accounting and finance and explain what stokes your passion for choosing this course.

  • Keep it simple
  • Avoid cheesy, exaggerated, unrealistic, bookish, and cliche sentences
  • Express your strong passion for the subject
  • Grab the reader’s attention
  • Be very sure what you are getting into and how excited you are about it

Try to sum up the theme of your personal statement in the beginning lines. Don’t stress too much about it and keep it natural. The more you think, the more muddled your opening will become. Here is a complete guide for the opening paragraph of the personal statement.

Middle Part

Place your logical evidence in this part, showing your passion and suitability for accounting and finance. Prove it to the committee that you can do it.

You can divide this part into academics and work experience as follows:

  • Academics: Besides your academic track record, you can mention and elaborate on any book (print or ebook ), lecture, research paper, or case study that spiked your interest in the course.
  • Work Experience: Explain your past or current job and what learning experience in accounting and finance you got from them. If you do not have any work experience, then mention any online or offline courses you took or activities that show your passion for the subject.

Watch this and learn how to include academics and work experiences in your accounting and finance personal statement.

This part is a personal touch. This is where you can mention the least significant part of your story. Mention your interests, hobbies, and other activities and elaborate on how they help you develop relevant soft skills. Mention books, events, programs, or people by name that you follow. Tip: Even the least significant information must significantly relate to your passion for accounting and finance. For example, you can mention reading books like ‘Rich Dad, and Poor Dad’, listening to TEDx talks, etc. Check out this guide to learn how to talk about hobbies in a personal statement.

  • 3. Focus on elaborating details that are not anywhere else in your application.
  • 4. Emphasize your interest in mathematics, economics, and business.
  • 5. Be realistic and genuine. Do not flatter the admission committee.
  • 6. Realistically present yourself in the light in which the admission committee wants you to be.

  • Too many fancy words and unrealistic goals.
  • Showing off or exaggerating interests, goals, and skills.
  • Using flowery language.

Sample Personal Statement Accounting and Finance

The following personal statement is written by an applicant who got accepted to several top accounting and finance programs. Variations of this PS got accepted at the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt, and Indiana University. Read this personal statement to understand what a top essay in Accounting and Finance should look like.

Example Personal Statement Accounting and Finance

I have never made popular choices, whether academic or professional. Where high academic achievement irrefutably means pursuing a career in Medicine or STEM, I opted for a career in management. I was free to choose a path for myself, owing to my performance during an extensive pre-induction professional training program. Fortunately, I picked a path that everyone believed was insignificant.

My decision to move to a new city to pursue my path did not receive encouragement. Making my own decisions has given me the freedom to dream and make it a reality. It has strengthened my belief that I am the only one who can bring a difference for myself and those around me. Brazil’s institutions may seem frozen, yet, at the grassroots, Brazil is in perpetual motion with ceaseless creativity. To accelerate this motion, we need to bring better and more affordable solutions; I plan to do that.

Growing up in Brazil, I have constantly questioned why we are still not growing economically despite having abundant resources. I frequently discussed the economic factors affecting us with my father, leading me to work at local NGOs and attend voluntary programs. My interest intensified when I discovered during these experiences that the unequal distribution of resources was a major cause of our economic constriction.

Moreover, our medical, engineering and academic professionals would not work in rural areas due to a lack of facilities, further debilitating the imbalance. It made me realize that we could only reap the benefits of our efforts if there were a proportionate distribution of resources. Realizing how effective mobilization of resources can aid in eradicating social ills, I developed an interest in management. This equipped me with technical knowledge and provided room for opinion building.

Pursuing this path, I joined the leading undergraduate institution in the country. The zeal with which I made this decision led me to graduate summa cum laude. While studying, I taught communication skills to undergraduate business students from rural areas. Meeting these students compelled me to get involved even though I lacked formal teaching training. Through empathy and friendly get-togethers, I was able to help these students conveniently traverse in English. With this experience, I understood that my time and energy had been well spent and that as an agent of change, one does not necessarily need to be exceptional; instead, one requires creativity, patience, and emotional intelligence.

After graduation, I followed through with my goal of facilitating change by joining the banking sector as an accounting and finance trainee. By working in Brazil’s most vital financial sector, I was exposed to diversified experiences, from being as simple as issuing customer chequebooks to designing accounting and credit proposals to the tune of USD 1.2 billion. Furthermore, while working on individual projects, I developed an in-depth understanding of international accounting rules that regulated trade transactions; the learning opportunities were immense.

Two and a half years of experience in the finance sector brought me to work for the country’s central bank. The anxiety that accompanied moving away from home for the first time was overwhelmed by my professional and personal growth. Nine months of extensive training and on-the-job assignments exposed me to interminable learning opportunities. However, my real gain has been in the form of self-improvement and growth that accompanied my first experience living independently. Leaving the protective living that I enjoyed with my family is challenging, but it has developed and strengthened my capabilities of taking and owning my decisions. Above all, knowing that my family is not always around to guide me has instilled in me a greater sense of responsibility.

During the two a half years of experience in accounting and finance, I observed the financial exclusion experienced by some important yet financially constrained sectors of the economy. This exposure motivated me to join the Development Finance Department upon my appointment to the country’s central bank. Moreover, most of the firms operating in any country of the world are either small or medium enterprises. Thus, providing an enabling environment to such enterprises is significant for economic growth and employment generation.

In Brazil also, 90 percent of the enterprises are small and medium-sized, and lack of access to formal sources of finance is a significant impediment to these enterprises’ growth. Therefore, a huge room for improvement is available concerning the development of policy framework and market infrastructure for the financial inclusion of this sector. As a part of the central bank, I have been allowed to intervene in a system that is not effectively performing its role of financial intermediation. Innovation in financial products, development of accounting and risk mitigation strategies are requirements to alleviate this segment’s financial exclusion.

By broadening my exposure and enhancing my knowledge, I aim to equip myself better to address the shortcomings of one of the critical segments of the economy.

A personal statement is a required essay done by a prospective candidate in an educational setting whether they are applying for a scholarship, graduate school admission, studying abroad, fellowship program, etc. However, it should not be confused with being the same as a statement of purpose. A statement of purpose strictly focuses on how your achievements, such as professional or academic, can benefit the program you are applying to . In contrast, a personal statement allows more creativity and freedom to develop within the applicant. Occasionally, personal statements may come with specific questions about what to write about.

Why Should They Choose You?

Although it is important to emphasize your achievements, whether it be academic or professional, the person reading your statement wants to get to know you better through your background information and what inspired you to pursue your goals. Overall, it’s important to ask yourself these questions when considering writing a personal statement:

●  What exact moment led you to be where you are today?

●  What separates you from the rest of the candidates?

●  What personal traits or qualities do you have that will help you succeed?

●  What do your story, goals, or skills obtained bring to the table?

Are You the Right Fit?

Although the focus of a personal statement is yourself, you must consider that you’re applying to a specific institution or program that offers specific opportunities. Not everyone will be the right fit and that’s okay, there are many opportunities for you to join. However, if you truly want to get in and be accepted, you must try to make a connection with your audience. Mention how the school or program will help you succeed and accomplish your goals. This goes back to what you bring to the table.

The unique trait about personal statements is that no two are alike. Everybody’s story is different. The requirements for each application vary in length, format, and topics. Nevertheless, having a concrete idea of how to organize your thoughts and ideas before you submit your final draft saves a lot of stress and time when the deadline comes. If you need an idea of where to start, brainstorm, or organize your thoughts, below is an example of a structure for your layout that may help you in getting out of that writing block:

Introduction:

-   Introduce a memory that leads back to where your interest or passion started or motivated you be where you are today

-   Give a sneak peek to your reader in a quick summary as to what you’re going to be talking about in your body paragraph (background information, accomplishments, & future aspirations from being admitted into the school or program)

*Note: Introductions should be a brief paragraph of everything you’re going to be writing about, leave the details for your body paragraphs.

A) 1 st Paragraph (Background Information)

What’s your undergraduate major/degree or other educational history?

What part of your demographic information is relevant? (hometown, heritage, family

history, etc.)

What’s an obstacle or challenge that changed the way you viewed your life?

Make sure be able make one connection to all three, it’ll make it easier for your

reader to follow through with your story and understand your goals

If deciding to write about an obstacle or challenge, remember to not solely focus on

the negative experience of it. Instead, try thinking about what you were able to take

from the experience and how did it change you as a person.

B) 2nd Paragraph (Academic and Professional Achievements)

Any organizations you’ve joined or rewards you’ve obtained? (The more you have

done, the better)

What skills have you’ve obtained through participating in any organizations, events,

jobs, etc.? C) 3 rd Paragraph (Future Goals and Accomplishments)

What is the next step after being admitted?

What do you hope to learn or take from being part of the program?

How will you apply it to your desired goal?

Conclusion:

Restate your goals in one or two sentences

Talk about what you envision for your future, what do you hope to gain from all of this?

What will you benefit from being on the program?

What do you contribute to the program?

How will you apply everything you learned?

*Note: Your concluding/closing paragraphs are usually short with a maximum of three or four sentences, leave out any details.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, there are several things to remind yourself of when writing a personal statement: focus on answering the main questions, tell your story, and use examples of any challenge or obstacle that you faced throughout your life. If you decide to focus on a challenge or obstacle, think about the tone you will use. Writing about this challenge or obstacle focuses on the learning experience or the opportunity rather than solely on the negative parts. Remember, you’ve worked hard enough to get where you are today. Hopefully, you can get started on that personal statement you’ve been procrastinating on, and good luck on whatever path you decide to pursue.

Accounting and Finance Personal Statement

My interest in business mainly stems from my experience of selling various items independently in order to make a profit. I do this by purchasing them at low prices, and selling them to customers for a higher price. I recognised gaps in the market and using my initiative supplied products, such as rare clothing and shoes, to fill this gap. I have managed to enhance my trading skills such as negotiation and business skills for deciding prices.

My interest has been further stimulated by the impact Brexit has had on businesses. Due to the Brexit vote, businesses entered an interesting and challenging phase. The uncertainty over the UK's future relationship with the European Union is discouraging business investment as the pound depreciated in value immediately after the result, creating a challenge for firms based in the UK, as exports have become dearer and faced a fall in demand. This fuelled my curiosity for the accounting and financial side of business as I enjoy quantitative analysis and analysing strategies best for firms depending on their circumstances. I find the difficulties that businesses face very intriguing and would especially like to analyse business figures to help provide a solution to problems, such as cutting costs.

I attended a taster session for business management, as well as accounting and finance at City, University of London . This allowed me to not only explore the different options available, but also gain an insight into the skills needed to be successful. I learnt that application and analysis are skills that are very important and are needed to be successful, not only when studying towards a degree, but also when managing a business. Attending a placement at Barclays enabled me to explore the financial sector and gain an understanding into the role of a financial advisor. Some of the tasks I completed included aiding customers deposit money into their bank accounts, counting large amounts of money, and ensuring that the tills were balanced. I also got the chance to observe interviews between customers and advisors regarding the creation of new accounts and applications for loans.

Additionally, I observed the business manager give advice to business owners about their finances. This observation made me realise that there are a lot of roles available in the banking sector, all of which have different responsibilities. During my time at Barclays, I improved on my customer service skills, as well as extending my knowledge about the financial sector. I discovered the many tasks involved in being a financial advisor, as well as gaining experience on the tasks. I have another work experience placement at an accountancy firm in the upcoming months and I hope to further my knowledge. A part time job in retail as a sales associate has enabled me to interact with people from an array of different backgrounds, improving my interpersonal skills and communication skills. Working in a well built, international company has enabled me to gain business awareness. I have gathered knowledge into how the company operates, and the importance of customer relations. Balancing a part-time job in retail with my education and social life has prepared me for life at university as it has helped me to improve my time management and organisational skills.

Within my school community, I am a Year 11 House Prefect and a Business Prefect. I have the responsibility of supporting lower school students in their courses and any other issues they may face. I work with a team of students, which has enabled me to enhance my team-working skills. With the skills I have obtained and my genuine interest in business, I look forward to the challenges, opportunities and rewards life at university will bring and feel that I have the passion and skills needed to be successful.

Using a Personal Vehicle for Travel or University-Related Business

University employees may use their personal vehicles for travel or university related business, but are subject to certain limitations and guidelines.

The means of transportation you use should be determined by the most economical mode and most commonly traveled route consistent with the authorized purpose of the trip. If it’s more economical to drive, reimbursement for mileage may be claimed according to the established rate published by the Internal Revenue Service at the time of vehicle use.

View Mileage Rates .

What You Can be Reimbursed For

Mileage shall ordinarily be computed between the traveler's headquarters and the common carrier or destination. Expenses for travel between the traveler's residence and headquarters (commuting expense) shall not be allowed. Mileage expenses may be allowed between the traveler's residence and the common carrier or destination if university business travel originates or terminates during a regularly scheduled day off .

When a traveler is authorized to drive a private vehicle to or from a common carrier terminal, mileage may be reimbursed as follows:

  • One round trip, including parking for the duration of the trip; or
  • Two round trips, including short-term parking expenses, when an employee is driven to a common carrier.

Also, if an employee who is not on travel status has a temporary assignment away from campus, reimbursement shall be made for mileage expenses incurred between the campus and the assignment location, or home and the assignment location, whichever is less.

Documentation: Google Map or MapQuest showing the mileage from point A to point B, required documentation.

Surface Transportation Used in Lieu of Air Travel

If advance approval has been obtained, a traveler may use surface transportation for personal reasons even though air travel is the appropriate mode of transportation. The cost of meals and lodging, parking, mileage, tolls, taxis, and ferries incurred while in transit by surface transportation may be reimbursed.

However, such costs shall not exceed the cost of airfare, based on the lower of the regular coach fare available for the location of travel from a standard commercial air carrier or the campus travel program fare, plus transportation costs to and from the terminals.

When Flying is Cheaper: If a traveler chooses to travel by personal car when air travel is more economical, they should only be reimbursed for mileage up to a reasonable estimate of lowest coach fare that could have been purchased plus transportation costs to and from the terminals.

Fuel and Rental Cars: Mileage may not be claimed for rental cars, but fuel can be reimbursed when purchased for a rental car. Mileage must be claimed in a personal car, traveler does not have the option to have fuel reimbursed.

Insurance: Traveler must carry liability insurance on the personal vehicle in order for mileage to be claimed.

Ownership: It is not required that the car used is owned by the traveler.

Driving to Mexico: All drivers traveling into Mexico must obtain minimum liability and property damage insurance before crossing the border.

Martha E. Pollack

President Martha E. Pollack will retire on June 30.

After ‘transformational’ tenure, Pollack to retire June 30

By melanie lefkowitz, cornell chronicle.

President Martha E. Pollack, who oversaw the creation of significant interdisciplinary programs, including a new school of public policy; expanded the affordability and accessibility of a Cornell education; and whose navigation of the COVID-19 pandemic made Cornell a role model for institutions around the world, will retire on June 30, after serving for more than seven years as the university’s 14th president.

Provost Michael I. Kotlikoff will serve as interim president beginning July 1. At that time, Pollack will be given the title of president emerita by the Cornell Board of Trustees in recognition of her contributions and legacy.

“Serving as the president of Cornell has been an amazing privilege; there are few roles that afford so much opportunity to make a positive difference in the world,” Pollack said. “After seven fruitful and gratifying years as Cornell’s president – capping a career in research and academia spanning five decades – I’m ready for a new chapter in my life. I greatly appreciate the continued support of our Board of Trustees and the many faculty, students, staff and alumni who have shared words of encouragement through my time as president, especially over the past academic year.”

Under Pollack’s leadership, the university created the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy; named the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science and the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration; launched new programs in areas ranging from sustainability and digital agriculture to artificial intelligence and design and technology; and expanded external research expenditures by nearly 50%. She also oversaw upgrades to academic facilities, including the ongoing construction of a new building for Cornell Bowers CIS and the multidisciplinary Atkinson Hall.

Over the course of her tenure, Pollack has significantly expanded the accessibility and affordability of a Cornell education, from increasing by 1,000 the number of undergraduates receiving grant-based financial aid to creating a debt-free education program at Weill Cornell Medicine, among other measures. She enriched and enhanced the student experience in numerous ways, including through the Active Learning Initiative, which now reaches around 10,000 students a year; the implementation of an Intergroup Dialogue Program for all incoming undergraduate students; and the expansion of mental health services.

Pollack also advanced Cornell’s ongoing commitment to operational sustainability, spearheaded a communitywide effort to develop a statement of core values, and, in 2023, launched the university’s first-ever theme year celebrating free and open expression and inquiry.

“President Pollack has been a transformational leader of Cornell, and her positive impact on our university will be felt for decades to come,” said Kraig H. Kayser, MBA ’84, chair of the Cornell Board of Trustees. “Beyond her achievements in academics, research and affordability, I and my fellow trustees deeply value her intelligence, integrity, candor and warmth, as well as her unwavering commitment to Cornell being a community of belonging.”

Pollack, a professor of computer science, information science and linguistics, is an expert in artificial intelligence and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. Formerly provost and executive vice president for academic affairs of the University of Michigan, she succeeded the late Elizabeth Garrett as Cornell’s president in 2017. Pollack led Cornell through challenging times, navigating a global pandemic, a national racial reckoning, and the terrorist attack in Israel and subsequent war in Gaza – the impacts of which have continued to reverberate across the nation, particularly in higher education.

At the request of the Board of Trustees, Kotlikoff will serve a two-year term as interim president; the board will form a search committee to select Cornell’s 15th president six to nine months before Kotlikoff’s term ends. In addition to his nine years as provost, Kotlikoff previously served as acting president, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and professor of molecular biology.

“We’re confident that Provost Kotlikoff will do an exceptional job leading the university during this important transition,” Kayser said. An interim provost will be named before June 30, and Kotlikoff will then conduct a search for a permanent provost.

Cornell’s remarkable community and ethos ensure that it will have a bright future, Pollack said.

“Cornell is unique, embracing a combination of core values that make the university exceptionally well placed to have an outsized impact on the world – across and beyond its many areas of exploration,” she said. “Leading this institution, helping to build its strengths and realize its potential, and seeing the transformational impact of our teaching, research and engagement, has been a true joy.”

Accounting and finance personal statement example 18.

When thinking of how much power polymer notes hold, it was normal for a child like myself to ask, 'What is money?'. Looking back the answer was obvious. The literal meaning might be 'a medium of exchange' but I simply see it as 'to sustain'. I came to my interpretation of money through a trip to my motherland, Ghana.

For years, Ghana has experienced severe electricity supply challenges due to the economic crisis that led to the scarcity of consumers' payments. The frequent lack of electricity during my time there, impacted my daily activities. Although this was a short stay, having to come up with solutions everyday was frustrating, but it also made me think about the people who go through it every day.

This made me acknowledge the importance of business strategy and investment management. The ability of the Ghanaian government to come up with solutions for their monetary purposes is what inspired me to choose Accounting and Finance.

Studying A-Level Accounting has re-enforced the idea of wanting a to pursue a career in Accounting and Finance. I really enjoyed learning about suspense accounts due to their ability to give clarity to transaction errors along with doubtful entries. I believe that my further comprehension of basic accounting principles, shows transferable academic skills such as communication and debate. Heartland Payment Systems data breach in 2008 was the debate topic that questioned whether businesses should modernise their accounting records or not.

As a student of Business, A-level, I discovered how to form a profitable organisation through conducting internal and external analysis and judge financial performances. Learning about the techniques used in strategic analysis enabled me to assess the strategic position of a business, which is also one of the key components of a business' approach to become financially stable, and it’s something that’s vital to know for the work done in Accounting and Finance.

Studying Spanish and Italian, helped to improve my overall understanding and enhanced my knowledge on Spain's cultures and traditions along with both countries political and economic issues which were covered in the course. The courses brought various skills such as interpreting skills gained via translation and understating the link between ideas, acquired through linking topics of the course like financial impacts of tourism in Spain to employment.

The EPQ was an opportunity of fulfilling my curiosity gained from crime documentaries and series. Their cases are inhumane. This stimulated an interest to investigate an understanding of morality and the human brain distinctions. My independent study and time management skills have all come from the commitment and dedication I have put throughout the project, which shows traits that will support me in higher education.

When volunteering to the British Heart Foundation as a cashier, I realised the deeper sentiment of customer service. The existence of Gift Aid which I promoted when taking donations, is for charities to have extra money from HRMC but only if the donator pays tax. This gave me a broader understanding of the different types of businesses. To be more involved in the world of music, I learned guitar. I now play in my free time and I'm able to play complex pieces of music like 'Tears in Heaven' by Eric Clapton and thanks to joining a band, I played in a concert at the Staller Hall in Manchester in front of hundreds of spectators.

I’m eager to enhance my skills and I believe that my maturity, persistence, and curiosity are traits that will support me throughout the journey at university.

Additional context on the protest at Kelvin Smith Library Oval: May 6, 2024

To the Case Western Reserve community,

Today marks one week since protesters began an encampment on the Kelvin Smith Library Oval. The ongoing conflict at the center of this protest is a complex, often personal issue about which many in our university community feel passionately, but the devastating loss of Israeli and Palestinian lives should be a distress we all share.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to meet with elected undergraduate student leaders, who shared with me their perspectives—and those of the wide range of students they represent. I want to thank them for taking the time to have this discussion amidst finals, and for the care and commitment they show in their roles.

During our meeting, these leaders noted that many members of our community, especially students, are unaware of the history of administration’s attempts over the years at discussion with CWRU Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a student organization whose leaders are heading the protest on Kelvin Smith Library Oval. At the elected student leaders’ suggestion, I wanted to provide additional context that may help explain the ongoing encampment and the university’s response.

The protesters have issued a series of demands, several having to do with a 2022 resolution passed by the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) about which many current students may not be aware. To enable fuller understanding, I wanted to recap the situation briefly.

USG Resolution 31-51 called for the university to divest assets from “Israeli apartheid,” among other requests. In response, I sent this communication to the university community, and subsequently I met with USG leadership as well as leaders of CWRU SJP to more clearly express my intentions. Divestment—a key component of the protesters’ demands—is and remains something the university will not do.

I want to reiterate that individuals are free to express their opposition to the university’s position on any range of issues—including this one—in accordance with the guidelines in our freedom of expression policy . It is never acceptable, however, to protest with signs, chants or other actions that are intimidating to members of our campus community, as has occurred in some cases this past week at the Kelvin Smith Library Oval.

This academic year, there have been multiple instances in which CWRU SJP’s advocacy has violated the university’s community standards, including vandalism. Ultimately, after multiple attempts at engagement with CWRU SJP leaders, some of these actions led to an interim suspension of its student organization status, which our student conduct team has tried to work toward resolution.

On Monday, April 29, members of CWRU SJP and their allies formed an encampment on Kelvin Smith Library Oval—an act that violates multiple aspects of the university’s freedom of expression policy regarding the appropriate time, place and manner for such activities, including disruption of university operations.

Still, appreciating their commitment and in a gesture of trust, members of the administration worked with CWRU SJP leaders and made an exception on Monday to rules to allow students, faculty and staff (with CWRU IDs) to remain overnight if outside community members left by 8 p.m.—an approach that was followed effectively Monday night. On Tuesday afternoon, members of the administration held conversations with CWRU SJP leaders that yielded promises that were promptly broken, and by Tuesday evening, they violated the fundamental agreement when they allowed—and continue to allow—non-CWRU individuals to stay at all hours.

As a result, on Thursday afternoon, I communicated that protesting in the oval was no longer permitted, and charges and/or sanctions will be invoked. Since Thursday, protesters have escalated their actions, including expanding the perimeter of the protest to block access to buildings and disrupting campus operations in multiple ways. Case Western Reserve University police continue their presence, providing protection for the protesters and the rest of our community.

I share this information to assure you that the university is committed to working with student leaders—but working together requires all parties to work in good faith. As I noted in my email Thursday, we will not engage in discussion on the demands made until the encampment ends and protesters have completed any relevant conduct processes.

I hope this email provides more clarity on this evolving situation. Again, I want to thank the elected student leaders who met with me last weekend. Their constructive feedback, openness to discussion and advocacy for their peers are testaments to the strong leadership they display.
