Alumni of Ph.D. programs say one valid reason to exit a Ph.D. program is if having a Ph.D. is not necessary for you to achieve your professional aspirations.

Earning a doctorate of any sort is difficult. After years of study, candidates must pass a qualification exam, write a lengthy dissertation or complete a capstone project, and defend their research and conclusions in front of a panel.

And unlike most other degree programs, research doctorates - commonly known as Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D., degrees - frequently do not have precise parameters on how long they take to finish.

Uncertainty surrounding when graduation day will arrive is one of the challenging aspects of these programs, and Ph.D. students often struggle to plan for the future when they don't have an end date in mind, says Adam Ruben, who has a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.

"It's so indeterminate, how long it will last," says Ruben, who wrote a satirical book called "Surviving Your Stupid, Stupid Decision to Go to Grad School."

"People ask you how long it will be until you graduate, and most of the time you tell them you have no idea," he adds. "It's not really until that last six-month stretch or so, when you have a thesis defense date scheduled, and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, that you know how long it is going to be."

Students who have started to regret their decision to enter a Ph.D. program should carefully evaluate whether it makes sense to stay in graduate school, experts say.

"Sometimes, openly considering quitting as a real option can help you to reconnect with why you started the PhD in the first place, and why you would like to stay," Katherine Firth, an academic adviser at the University of Melbourne in Australia, who has a Ph.D. and supervises Ph.D. students, wrote in an email.

Noncompletion and Academic Delays

Many people who enroll in Ph.D. programs leave those programs without Ph.D. degrees or take longer than eight years to finish their studies.

Ph.D. completion statistics from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences reveal that only 42% of humanities Ph.D. students in the U.S. who began pursuing their degrees sometime between 1996 and 2006 had doctorates eight years later.

Research on Ph.D. program attrition indicates that conflict between Ph.D. students and their academic advisers increases the odds that students will leave grad school. Frustration that arises while coming up with ideas for a dissertation or capstone, completing that project and defending it can be a major source of stress for Ph.D. students, many of whom leave their programs after completing doctoral coursework but before finalizing and successfully defending their work, research shows.

Additionally, Ph.D. students often express a need for additional funding, mental health services and professional mentoring.

Ph.D. program alumni often say they were mistreated by faculty during graduate school. A global survey of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers at academic science institutions, published in May 2021, revealed that 84% of current and former science Ph.D. students and postdocs felt that an academic supervisor had treated them abusively.

"Cases where people are facing harassment, bullying or exclusion for example, might mean a person decides the only safe option is to quit, but a better academic culture would let them stay and complete," says Firth.

Reasons to Leave a Ph.D. Program

When a ph.d. won't help you get where you want to go.

Lt. Col. Robert Solano, a U.S. Army aviator and commander for the federal Defense Contract Management Agency, exited a distance learning, predominantly online Ph.D. program in aviation science several years ago. He realized he could advance in the military and thrive as an entrepreneur and investor without a doctorate.

"You don't need Ph.D. behind your name to show the world your self-worth and the value that you bring," he adds. "I wish I'd understood that sooner in the process."

Solano, who was a part-time Ph.D. student with a full-time military career and military scholarships, had acquired around $15,000 of debt to finance his Ph.D. studies, he says.

"One of my biggest deciding factors was that I felt like the dissertation process didn't allow me to be creative and pursue research that was going to be really meaningful and impactful in my career and my life," Solano says, adding that he submitted three dissertation research proposals that were rejected. "I could not imagine doing that for the next two to four years of my life, struggling with a dissertation board, and I think that was really the biggest factor for me."

When Your Well-Being Is at Risk

Experts say it's worth considering pausing or ending your studies if they are significantly interfering with other important aspects of your life, such as your family, health and relationships.

For Solano, the volume of Ph.D. reading and writing assignments he had to complete often felt overwhelming when combined with his professional duties. "I was declining in happiness and declining in health," he says.

Solano also worried that time spent on doctoral studies would take away from time with the woman who later became his wife, he says.

"If I could have done one thing differently, it would have been paying closer attention to that and not sacrificing those two things - my happiness and health," he says.

When You Find Another Way

Sometimes Ph.D. students receive job offers for their dream positions during their Ph.D. studies. In those cases, "they might choose to leave because they have already achieved their goals," Firth says.

Another valid reason to leave a Ph.D. program, she says, is if a student discovers that the actual experience of obtaining a Ph.D. "is not what they signed up for, and it doesn’t suit them after all."

What to Do if You're Considering Quitting

Ask for advice from someone other than your thesis adviser.

Certain problems with Ph.D. programs, such as disagreements and misunderstandings with advisers, may be addressed by seeking help from various faculty members or administrators at your grad school and outside experts who aren't on your thesis committee, experts say.

"There are other folks that (students) can go to for help and perspective, on and off campus," says Jennifer Polk, a Ph.D. recipient who provides career consulting to Ph.D. students and alumni via her consulting firm, "From Ph.D. to Life."

Ph.D. students often feel disempowered and isolated, Polk says, but "if the decision is whether to quit or not, that actually gives you power."

"If you're willing to walk away, you have power, so you can go and talk to other professors," she adds. "You can go and talk to the chair of the department. ... You can escalate to the graduate dean. There might be other offices you can go to before you burn it all down."

Firth notes that sometimes changes to a Ph.D. program – such as a switch from one adviser to another or a change to a thesis committee – can address a Ph.D. student's concerns and negate the desire to quit. Transitioning to part-time study or taking a leave of absence could make sense, and so could shifting between locations if a university has multiple campuses, she adds.

"Sometimes people think they have to quit, but they could seek out other adjustments," Firth wrote. It's also important for Ph.D. students in distress to evaluate whether their "current problems might go away with time or are here to stay," she says.

Consider Whether You Are Being Too Self-Critical

It is common for Ph.D. students to have a crisis of confidence in the middle of their studies, but Ruben cautions that doubts about personal competence may simply be impostor syndrome in disguise.

Though skepticism is frequently beneficial when conducting academic research, it can become destructive if it compromises someone's faith in themselves, he says.

"The problem is if you apply that skepticism to your own abilities and you apply it too harshly and say, 'I'm no good. I'm the worst person here. I don't deserve to be here,'" Ruben says. "You're going to feel terrible and you may also make some decisions that you wouldn't necessarily have made if you had a better sense of your own abilities and interests."

Amid lab shutdowns and cancelled fieldwork, many PhD students are facing tough choices regarding the future of their research career.

Roughly 45% of PhD students expect to disengage with their studies within the next six months due to financial hardship related to the pandemic, according to a new survey of 1,020 doctoral candidates in Australia.

While walking away without a doctorate will be the right choice for some – and perhaps the only choice for those with inadequate financial support - it’s important to ask the right questions before making a decision.

“Students need to separate the fake and real reasons for leaving,” says Shane Huntington, deputy director of strategy and partnerships at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences in Australia.

“Some of the most common reasons students quit have nothing to do with their ability to do a PhD.”

Below are three questions that can help a candidate decide whether to quit or continue with their doctoral studies.

1. Are your problems solvable?

A disengaged supervisor, toxic lab culture, or a string of failed experiments might feel like reason enough to quit your PhD, but these are not insurmountable problems.

Huntington suggests switching labs if poor supervision or an overly competitive environment are causing you distress.

“I try to get students to determine whether their reasons for wanting to quit are really about them, and not just due to systemic problems. My advice is to map out what the problems are and explore how they can be solved.”

Struggling with specific tasks, such as writing, isn’t a sign to start drafting a withdrawal letter, says Inger Mewburn, director of research training at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“This is a fixable problem,” says Mewburn, who edits a popular blog called The Thesis Whisperer .

“But if you just aren’t enjoying what you’re doing each day, then those feelings need to be critically examined.”

2. Have you talked to someone about it?

It can be difficult for students to admit that they’re struggling, but reaching out to supervisors and other lab members can offer some much-needed perspective, says Frey Fyfe.

“There is a lot of pressure to only convey the positive,” says Fyfe, who quit their PhD in volcanology at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom in 2018, and has not returned to academia.

“I wish I had spoken to someone in my research group, as pretty much every PhD student wants to quit at some point.”

Huntington recalls that a quick chat with his PhD supervisor saved him from quitting his own PhD in physics in the late 1990s. The discussion led to weekly meetings where other lab members could help him find solutions to his experimental problems.

“My supervisor told me that most students want to quit at least three times, which sort of gave me permission to feel the way I did,” says Huntington.

He says the weekly meeting helped him feel supported. “We were able to work through the low points.”

Fyfe says that viewing a supervisor as a fellow collaborator, rather than someone to win approval from, can make it easier to communicate more openly.

“It’s not a one-way street,” says Fyfe. “You need to be able to communicate what’s going right and what isn’t.”

3. Does your PhD fit with your long-term goals?

Embarking on a PhD is a major career milestone for many students, but it’s important to consider how it will further your aspirations in the long-run, says Mewburn.

For example, if a candidate wants to end up in a research-focussed job that doesn’t involve teaching, gaining experience from an industry placement could be a more strategic investment than spending years on a PhD.

“You’ve got to explore your options,” says Mewburn. “Is there even going to be a job in your field when you finish your PhD?”

A common mistake students make when deciding whether to quit or continue is focussing on the sacrifices they have made, instead of considering where they want to head next.

“People often think of the past, rather than the future. There’s a lot of guilt about what they’re giving up [if they quit],” says Huntington. “But it’s a myth, because you are not giving up on all the hard work, you’re just taking it in a different direction.”

Whether choosing to quit or stay, it ultimately comes down to feeling confident about your underlying reasons, says Huntington.

“Students should have some power over their destiny. Make the right decision on the right basis, and feel good about the choice you’ve made.”

I highly recommend that you have a co-supervisor during your PhD so that if one of the supervisor relationships breaks down you always have a backup.

The project is poorly designed

Sometimes the best plans can go badly.

It is worth quitting your PhD if you have got nowhere with your research after two years. Sometimes research does not reward you for hard work and it can be a very frustrating time.

Look at the progress of your research and focus on stuff that is working. Ultimately, at the end of your PhD you are expected to write up a dissertation or a number of peer-reviewed papers to show that you have contributed enough novel work to be admitted into your doctorate.

If you are unable to satisfy this, you will simply fail to obtain your PhD.

A good project is one that is relatively flexible and can pivot to other areas if one section of the plan is not working.

Mental health issues

Mental health issues are also another reason why you should consider quitting your PhD or, at least putting it on hold.

Your PhD is only as good as your mental health. You will be the one responsible for pushing the project forward when things are going badly and this takes a fair amount of resilience and persistence.

Resilience and persistence are at their best when your mental health is too.

Financial issues

Many people want to quit their PhD due to financial stress.

Earning a student stipend for multiple years can be a very stressful and miserable time for those who have got expenses and debts. Some people get a job alongside their PhD but this is not realistic for most.

Finally, be sure to reach out for support from family and friends during this time. Quitting a PhD can be a difficult and stressful experience but having a strong support network can make it much easier.

Here are some steps you can take to ease the transition.

Take some time off – Pause your studies

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is to take a break.

Step away from your research and give yourself some time to relax. You may be able to give yourself up to a year off from your research. I have spoken with PhD students have done this and they are able to re-enter their PhD with much more focus and motivation.

Try to come back to your research with fresh eyes and a clear mind.

Leave your PhD amicably

If you decide to leave your PhD program, it is important to do so amicably.

This means that you should try to maintain a good relationship with your advisor and committee members. You should also let them know about your decision as soon as possible. A committee member may be able to help you find a new advisor.

Finally, it is also a good idea to write a letter of resignation. This will help you to state your intentions in a professional manner and it will also give your supervisor time to adjust or find a replacement PhD student for the project.

A letter of resignation can be an extremely difficult thing to write. However, it is important that you take the time to write one so that your supervisor and the University know that you are leaving.

What are your next career plans?

Before leaving your PhD you need to ask yourself what is next for your career.

What excites you? What job would you be excited to turn up to every day?

Most people will need to find work as soon as they leave their PhD in order to live comfortably. Think about what you’d like to do and your plans for after you quit.

This will help you consider whether or not quitting is the right decision for you and help ease the transition as you will be excited for your next adventure.

We know that 30 to 50 per cent of PhD candidates don’t complete globally. Countries such as the UK and Australia, where about a quarter of students don’t finish their PhD, actually congratulate themselves on their efficient completions. While my day job involves trying to help more people finish on time, I also know that choosing to stop can sometimes be the right decision.

People stop their PhD for a variety of reasons, including to pursue job opportunities, to focus on external life priorities or simply because they lose interest. Over the past two years, there have been even more disruptions than usual: researchers haven’t been able to travel or do fieldwork; they have had to give up in-person conferences and avoid busy labs and libraries; they got sick or the pandemic exacerbated existing health conditions; or their priorities changed.

Supervisors, candidates and universities need to be more open to having conversations about quitting. Why do candidates choose to quit, how many people do so and what happens to them afterwards? It’s almost impossible to get detailed, accurate data about completion rates. People who quit leave the university and, therefore, we often don’t see what they do next. If we don’t talk openly about stopping, people who are considering it feel isolated and uncertain. But it isn’t rare, and supervisors are in a privileged position to recognise the signs early – and then, as appropriate, support their candidates as they successfully navigate away from the PhD.

Academics don’t always like to acknowledge it, but your health, family, career and community are more important than any scholarly accolade. People generally think about quitting for reasons including family responsibilities, mental health or their financial situation. Or they choose to leave because other opportunities come up. These can be rational, practical choices with sensible long-term outcomes.

After all, graduating with a doctorate is not the only pathway towards contributing to knowledge, discovering new information or being recognised as an expert. That incomplete doctorate might be suitable for a patent or to spin out into an industry application. Perhaps it makes sense to publish your findings in an academic article – or a public-facing book. Similarly, the skills that candidates have already developed in pursuing their research might be an asset in their job beyond academia.

It’s important for candidates to know that not finishing a PhD doesn’t make you a failure, and it doesn’t mean you’ll never have the opportunity to do a research degree in the future. Sometimes, now is not the right time or you’re not in the right field. You wouldn’t be the first person to return to academia after a decade in industry, or when your circumstances changed, or when your research project was safe to pursue again. The past two years have been particularly challenging for researchers who had to totally change their planned research projects. When it is just not possible to pursue the PhD you signed up for, it can be a valid decision to do something else instead.

However, I wouldn’t want to suggest that the only two options are gritting your teeth or leaving. Universities increasingly have opportunities for flexibility or support, which candidates should explore. Some adjustments are quite common if you ask around. It’s often possible to press pause on your candidature, take a leave of absence or change to part-time study. Work with the equity team or researcher development team to improve accessibility or get support. It might also be helpful to negotiate changes in the supervision team – realigning it to better support your methods, specialisation or preferences.

There are more drastic options, too. It’s possible to convert your PhD to a master’s by research. Candidates might even explore taking their project to another faculty, another university or another country where it fits better. Leaving your current situation might mean losing out on your funding or burning bridges or hurting feelings. It tends to require a lot of extra time, effort and work. It’s an extreme option, but if you’re already thinking about leaving, you are already considering radical action.

In our experience working with thousands of doctoral candidates around the world, having non-judgemental conversations about quitting frees people from having to pretend that everything is fine.

Supervisors, peers and mentors can also help identify what changes are possible to make or support candidates to weigh up their options and make a considered decision about whether to carry on or put down the doctorate, for now or for good, and pursue other priorities. PhD researchers are smart, resilient, persistent problem-solvers, and they contribute in so many ways to our world, whether or not they gain the title “doctor”.

Should you quit your PhD? There wasn’t a day that went by during my PhD when I didn’t think about quitting at least once. I’d ask myself why I was putting myself through the roller coaster, and whether I had made a mistake.

It’s comforting – or perhaps also a little worrying – to know that these feelings are largely normal. For many PhD students, working to overcome this inner voice is part of the challenge of completing a PhD.

PhDs are hard, there’s no escaping that, and at times stressful, but they shouldn’t be unbearable, at least not for any continued length of time. But there’s a danger that we risk telling students to ‘suck it up’ and in the process normalise suffering and genuine feelings of dissatisfaction. For many, quitting a PhD is the wrong decision. For those students, sure, they need to ‘suck it up’. But for others, quitting is the right decision. For those, sucking it up is the worst possible advice.

This article speaks to those who are thinking of quitting their PhDs, and instead of telling you to suck it up, it talks frankly about why you might want to and how to navigate such a decision. It is my hope that you might understand whether the feelings of dissatisfaction and overwhelm you might have for your PhD are normal, or whether you really are better off doing something else.

Deciding to quit anything, not least a PhD, is often laden with emotional weight, uncertainty, and implications for your future. Even the term quitting is so laden with negative connotations that it’s almost a slur. I almost contemplated avoiding the word entirely in this article. Quitting implies failure, rejection, not having what it takes. But whilst there’s a lot to be said for sticking with adversity, the emotional and cultural baggage around the very idea of quitting can be unhelpful for those who are ill-suited to academia, or those who are really having a horrid time. The stigma around quitting a PhD is naive, when you consider how many people actually do. In the US, for example, around 50% of people drop out of PhD programmes.

The decision to quit your PhD or stick with it is yours and yours alone. It’s not up to me or anyone else to tell you you should or shouldn’t quit. The difficulty in such a decision is understanding – truly understanding – whether any sense of dissatisfaction you’re feeling with your PhD journey is on the ‘normal’ end of the spectrum, or whether it’s on the problematic end. In other words, whether you should suck it up or move on to other things.

What can be helpful in working out where on that spectrum you are is to understand the reasons why other people decide to drop out.

Common Reasons for Wanting to Quit a PhD

Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of academic research around this topic. In an extensive review of the literature on this topic, Sverdlik, Hall, McAlpine & Hubbard (2018)  categorised the factors that influenced this decision as external or internal to the student.

External factors

Supervision.

The most influential force in the doctoral experience is the supervisory relationship. When it is open, supportive and communicative, you can assume that students feel more successful and satisfied. Compatibility, whether in terms of research interests or working style, between the student and the supervisor, is also important. When these are missing, and when the supervisory relationship itself turns into a source of stress and anxiety, it’s not uncommon for students to feel a great deal of dissatisfaction.

Departmental structures and organisation

From the students we speak to, particularly those in our writing group , we know how important it is to feel connected and to feel as though you’re part of something bigger. Departments have a huge role to play in addressing this need, and when this type of support and integration is missing it can damage our feelings of belonging and overall morale.

There are two dimensions at play here. On a formal level, departments can do a lot to integrate and socialise students into departmental life, through things like funding opportunities, sharing information, teaching opportunities, and clear communication. On an informal level, there’s much they can do to make you feel welcome, such as socialising you into the departmental culture and making you feel as though you’re a valuable member of the department.

Where there is a mismatch between you and your department, whether informally or formally, it can be very easy to feel isolated and make the decision to leave the programme easier. This of course has not been helped by the pandemic. During the pandemic, and particularly lock-down, this isolation was particularly acute, for obvious reasons. But from our experience working with students since the pandemic, often things never really returned to the way they were before. There’s more time alone, more time on Zoom, less time in the department and less time interacting in the real world with peers. The ability to feel part of something bigger and supported by department structures is now more strained as a result.

Financial opportunities

It is perhaps unsurprising that whether or not funding opportunities are available can have a huge impact on your overall sense of worth and well-being, and can be a major driver in deciding whether or not to quit the PhD programme. For many, the years doing a PhD are years that could be spent in industry starting a career (and getting paid accordingly). As the years on the PhD programme go by, a fear of missing out kicks in, and you may start to question your financial acumen in deciding to go down this path. I certainly did; my stipend was around £12,000 per year, which was far, far less than I could have earned elsewhere, and well below minimum wage when taking into consideration the number of hours I was spending on the PhD. I was grateful to receive it of course, but fully aware of the opportunity cost of the PhD on any alternative careers or income.

On a more pragmatic level, the issue isn’t so much what you could be earning elsewhere, rather the more immediate concern of not having enough money in the first place. Academia is an elite institution, with too few students from working class and marginalised backgrounds. When me and other PhD students I worked with – all comfortable in our middle class lives – complained of having no money, what most of us really meant was ‘not having as much as we’d like’.

For many on our programme and many elsewhere though, not having enough money means just that. It means having to hold down one or more part-time jobs, and miss out on conferences, events, and other things crucial both to professional and personal wellbeing. For some,  the decision to drop out can be a purely financial one, or one borne out of the stress and exhaustion that comes from simply staying afloat.

Another significant factor affecting a decision to stay in the programme is what happens after you graduate. For many disciplines and in many countries, the academic job market is poor, with little promise of job security or salaries to match the expertise and experience you have. Where there are limited job options or poor salary prospects, the decision to quit a PhD can become easier.

Internal factors

A common reason for quitting a PhD is a lack of motivation. The unstructured nature of PhD work, and the fact that you have to self-regulate and self-manage, means that motivation can be difficult to conjure up.

There is obviously a close relationship between the other factors I’ve discussed elsewhere and this one. Motivation might wane where there is a poor supervisor relationship, for example, or once you realise that there are poor job prospects. But it can also be influenced by why you decided to do a PhD in the first place. Broadly, we can break down a student’s motivations for starting a PhD into two spheres: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic reasons are a passion or interest for the subject. Extrinsic reasons are things like boosting your CV. Students who pursue a PhD for intrinsic reasons – because they’re passionate about a topic – are more likely to stick with it and feel more satisfied.

Self-worth and efficacy

At the heart of many PhD students’ struggles is a sense of not being ‘worthy’ of a PhD, or not having what it takes. Countering this prevailing self-depreciation is a big part of what we try to do here, because such self-critique is more often than not based on a faulty assessment of our own abilities and skills. When we think we’re worthless, the cost of quitting decreases significantly.

Personal and social lives

PhDs require a huge amount of physical and emotional energy. The often extensive demands of both formal and informal doctoral work means that health, wellbeing and social lives can go out of the window. It is when we fail to manage our well-being and maintain a holistic personal life beyond the PhD that we experience burnout, depression and low well-being. And when they rear their heads, you’re far more likely to want to leave.

There’s no getting away from the fact that the PhD will demand a huge amount of your time. But there’s absolutely no need to feel guilty about taking time away from it and focusing on your own health and your own personal life instead. Indeed, work-life balance is the strongest predictor of psychological distress in PhD students.

Assessing your situation.

Whilst the research above looks at why students have dropped out, what it doesn’t look at is whether they’re the ‘right’ decision to drop out. I use the word ‘right’ here cautiously. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ reason for dropping out. Rather, there is just ‘a’ decision to drop out. What we might think of instead is whether the struggles and strains are on the normal, to-be-expected end of the PhD spectrum or whether life really is miserable and you really are better off leaving.

But how can you know on what end of the spectrum you lie?

It’s entirely normal in a PhD to feel like you’re not making any progress and to feel completely out of your depth. Research is an exercise in failing, over and over again. In order to work out what the correct path is, you need to go down all the wrong paths, find the dead ends, and retrace your steps to find another path to take. Eventually, you get to the end, perhaps without ever noticing when you finally made it onto the right path.

This trial-and-error approach, informed of course by an intelligent reading of the literature and your data, is, counterintuitively, how we make progress in research. We throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks. Further aggrevating that though is the fact that you’ve never really done any of this stuff before. You’re in at the very deepest end, learning on the job and, as we’ve seen, continually making mistakes.

It can be easy to see these mistakes as your failure, as something innate to your abilities (or perceived lack of them). But they’re not. Failure is progress, after all. And all that work is just plain hard. And isolating. If a PhD was easy, everyone would have one. But they’re not, so they don’t.

All this is to suggest that perhaps you shouldn’t quit a PhD if you feel like an imposter, or you feel like you’re making too many mistakes and haven’t got what it takes. Or if you find the work too hard (everyone does, and it gets easier).

But perhaps you should quit a PhD if you’ve traded your health (particularly your mental health) to stay on the journey. Or, because the more you go down the path the more you lost interest in the subject or the more you see that the career that lies ahead isn’t for you.

Consequences of Quitting

But as much as it is a personal decision, there are real-world, often external consequences. This step will have ramifications for your career, your sense of self, and possibly even your social circle. Before deciding to leave your programme, it’s important to know what you’re really signing up for.

Professional Implications

Choosing to step away from a PhD might feel like veering off an established career path. Within academia, the finished thesis is the route to a research or teaching position. But outside the academic walls, the reality is different. Many industries and sectors deeply value the skills you’ve acquired during your PhD journey—skills like in-depth research capabilities, critical thinking, and proficient project management. Even without that final thesis, and no matter how far through you end up, you come armed with a unique set of competencies that can be invaluable in various roles and settings.

Personal Growth

Irrespective of your decision about the PhD, the journey itself offers invaluable lessons about personal growth. Throughout this experience, you’ll discover more about yourself: the environments in which you flourish, the challenges you willingly embrace, and the aspects of work you truly value. Deciding whether to continue or step back isn’t just about the degree; it’s an extended exercise in self-awareness and in understanding your priorities. Whether you proceed or drop out, these insights into your character and preferences will guide many of your future choices.

Financial Considerations

The financial dimension of quitting a PhD is complex. You need to be mindful of existing funding agreements, scholarships, and any potential repayment obligations. Beyond that, consider the financial landscape of transitioning into a new field or profession. While the initial phase might come with financial challenges, especially if you’re retraining or shifting sectors, remember that many industries might value the unique skills and perspectives you bring from your PhD experience. Balancing immediate financial concerns with long-term prospects can help you make an informed decision.

Social Impacts

Making the decision about your PhD is deeply personal, but its ripple effects touch the people around you. You might find yourself on the receiving end of a spectrum of reactions from peers, mentors, family, and friends. While some might stand firmly by your side, understanding and supporting your choice, others might struggle to grasp the reasons behind your decision. During such times, it’s crucial to lean on a supportive network. Engaging in open conversations and seeking understanding can be cathartic. Surrounding yourself with empathetic individuals who respect your choices, even if they don’t fully understand them, can make this transition smoother and more reassuring. But above all, remember that is your choice alone to make, and you don’t need to justify it to anyone.

The Emotional Weight of Considering Quitting

Quitting your PhD is not a simple binary decision, and the weight of the decision is not just academic but emotional, affecting not just your work, but your sense of self and your future.

A key part of the challenge is that it can feel as though your entire education has led to you doing a PhD. That your entire identity is wrapped up in being an academic, and being smart, and the PhD is the final piece of the puzzle that is so tantalising close and worth risking everything for. This is largely nonsense. You will still be smart if you drop out. You will still have all the skills and experience you’ve gained in your education so far, and plenty of non-academic employers would love to hire you for them.

Quitting a PhD should therefore be seen as a positive. It’s you taking control over your well-being and changing something that wasn’t working for you. It’s you taking a risk, putting yourself first, and refusing to put up with something that you know isn’t good for you.

But nonetheless, you’re likely to go on an emotional rollercoaster in the run up and aftermath to leaving your programme.

Guilt and Shame

It’s entirely natural for you to grapple with feelings of guilt and shame when thinking about leaving a PhD behind. Societal norms, combined with personal expectations, can paint a picture where deviating from the path feels like a defeat. The weight of the world and your own aspirations can press heavily, making you feel like you’re not measuring up or that you’re letting yourself and others down. The idea of quitting is often shrouded in taboo, further intensified by the sunk cost fallacy – the notion that you’ve already invested so much time, energy, and perhaps finances, that turning back feels wasteful. However, it’s vital for you to remember that your journey is unique, and measuring your decisions against societal standards or past investments might not always reflect what’s best for your current and future well-being.

Contemplating the idea of stepping away from the PhD might initially be fraught with hesitations and doubts. However, as you delve deeper into the thought, you might find a palpable sense of relief washing over you. This emotional response can be enlightening. If merely considering a different path brings such a strong sense of relief, it might be an indication that redirecting your journey could indeed be the right choice for your well-being and future goals. Listening to this inner emotional compass can be crucial in making decisions that resonate with your true desires and needs.

Fear of the Unknown

Stepping into an uncertain future, especially when it deviates from a long-held plan like completing a PhD, can be incredibly daunting for you. The questions might swirl in your mind: What opportunities await without that coveted doctoral degree? How will the professional landscape perceive you? The ambiguity of not knowing can sometimes overshadow the reasons that led you to consider a different path. But remember, every significant life decision comes with its share of uncertainties. Embracing them, rather than fearing them, can open doors to opportunities you hadn’t previously imagined.

Embarking on a PhD is often a decision driven by your passion, curiosity, and aspirations for the future. But as the journey progresses, you might find a growing disconnect between the academic path and your evolving personal and professional goals. Recognising this misalignment isn’t a sign of failure but rather an act of self-validation. Understanding that the path you once felt was perfect might not align with your current aspirations is empowering, and a sign of a deeper understanding of your own needs and desires. This realisation isn’t about admitting defeat, but rather about acknowledging your evolving self-awareness and priorities. By doing so, you’re not only giving yourself the permission to seek out paths that resonate more with your current goals but also embracing an authentic commitment to your personal growth and future.

Alternatives to Quitting

Remember that quitting is not your only option, even when it feels like it. Whether it’s considering a leave of absence, consulting with mental health professionals, or even shifting your research focus, there are ways to make your PhD journey more bearable. Yes, you read it right—you don’t have to face the monumental task of single-handedly revolutionising your field. It’s your apprenticeship into academia, not a Nobel Prize race.

Considering a Leave of Absence

Before making a final decision, remember that many institutions provide an option to take a break. Opting for a leave of absence might offer you the breathing room you need, allowing you to step back, recharge, and assess your choices with a clearer mind. This pause can be instrumental in reevaluating your commitment to the program, granting you the time to contemplate whether your struggles are temporary setbacks or indicative of a deeper misalignment.

Reassessing Supervisory and Project Dynamics

If the crux of your unease stems from challenges with your supervisor or the nature of your research project, there’s a potential remedy. Consider discussing a switch in supervision or even pivoting your research direction. Sometimes, reshuffling these foundational elements can reignite your passion and satisfaction with the PhD journey, altering the course of your experience.

Weighing the Part-time PhD Option

The rigours of a full-time PhD can be overwhelming, especially if you’re juggling other life responsibilities or commitments. Some universities accommodate by offering a part-time PhD track. This could be a balanced middle-ground, allowing you to continue your academic pursuits at a more manageable pace while also engaging with other aspects of your life.

Turning to Counseling or Therapy

The emotional and mental strains of a PhD can be taxing. Engaging in counseling or therapy sessions can provide you with a space to articulate and process your feelings. A professional can offer insights, coping mechanisms, and strategies to manage stress, potentially equipping you with the tools to navigate the challenges of the doctoral journey.

Steps to Take If You Decide to Quit

If, after thorough reflection, you decide that leaving is the best course of action, there are official routes and less formal pathways out of your PhD. Exit degrees, other academic pursuits, or a pivot into industry could all be next steps in your post-PhD life.

Engaging with Your Supervisor and Department

Your decision impacts not just you but also your academic ecosystem. Open dialogue with your supervisor and department is crucial. These discussions offer clarity, ensure all parties understand the reasons behind your choice, and can sometimes open doors to alternative solutions you might not have considered.

Understanding the Withdrawal Process

Deciding to leave is more than just an emotional choice; there’s an administrative aspect to it. Familiarize yourself with the withdrawal process of your institution. Be clear on any obligations, potential repercussions, or financial considerations associated with your decision.

Your skills and experiences acquired during your PhD journey are valuable and transferrable. Career counseling can guide you in identifying these strengths and navigating job markets, ensuring you’re positioned favorably for roles outside of academia that resonate with your aspirations.

Exiting a PhD program doesn’t necessitate severing ties with the academic world. The relationships, networks, and bonds you’ve forged can continue to serve you well in various capacities. Maintain these connections; they can be sources of references, collaborations, or even job opportunities.

Wholeheartedly Embracing Your Decision

Whatever your choice, remember it’s grounded in your well-being and aspirations. It’s an act of courage and self-awareness. Celebrate this bravery and move forward with optimism and confidence, knowing you’re aligned with a path that resonates with your current and future goals.

Choosing to quit your PhD is an intensely personal decision that comes with its own set of complexities. Just like when you’re wrestling with your day-to-day PhD challenges, it’s crucial to be realistic about what you can and cannot do. If you decide to leave your PhD programme, know that it’s a decision that should be made with the utmost care, with due consideration given to both your present circumstances and your future prospects. But know that only you can make the decision, and being able to make it in good faith depends on whether you’re able to fully understand the feelings that you have and the relationship you have with your PhD. Is what you’re feeling a ‘normal’ part of the journey, or a cause for concern? It is my hope that this article has helped you to undersatnd the answer to this question a bit more clearly. My guess is that you’ve landed on this post because you’ve thought about quitting your PhD program?

Believe it or not, many students have been in your shoes.

In fact, for a while, I was one of those people who wanted to quit her PhD.

I didn’t quit but I know at least three people personally who quit and live fairly satisfied lives.

While I cannot talk about why some PhD students quit, I can talk about my reasons for seeing it through.

Towards the end of this post, I will also share three introspective questions to consider before you quit your PhD.

Why I didn’t quit my PhD

I was an international student.

International students in the United States hold F-1 visas that only allow you to continue living in the States as long as you are a student. I came to the US as an international student and my family did sacrifice a lot for me to get to that level of education.

Thus, even though things got tough during my PhD and there were days when I really wanted to quit, keeping the sacrifice my family had made for me in mind kept me going.

Now, I know that this goes against the “if it is not making you happy then you should quit” philosophy. I know! If you no longer want to read this post for this reason, that is okay. But please realize that while the above is a nice, motivational bit, not everyone has the luxury of doing so.

In my case, visa restrictions and the fact that my family had given a lot for me to be in the US played into why I did not quit.

I wanted to increase my chances of landing specific roles

My PhD is in the biomedical sciences and while you can certainly land good-paying roles with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, I knew getting my PhD would allow me to shoot for the top.

For instance, in the biotech world, you could work as a scientist with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. However, most senior scientist roles or leadership roles require that you have a PhD. A person with a masters may get to the same level with years of experience and competence, but I learned quickly that (sometimes) having a PhD gets you there much faster.

Furthermore, one of my career interests involved teaching at a university. Most of those roles required a PhD as well.

So yes, I am one of those people who went through with my PhD because I wanted to improve my chances at being chosen for the job.

I learned I didn’t have to stay in academia

I think I did a dance when I learned I did not have to stay in academia when I finished my PhD.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I taught community college for three semesters and I loved every bit of it!

But I honestly did not want to have to think of research projects and constantly write grants for research.

I did not want to stay in a place for ten years chasing the trophy of tenure while making less than I knew I was worth.

So the day I did a Google search and found out I could take the skills from my PhD and translate them into another career path, I was ecstatic. I started learning everything I could about medical writing and I researched medical science liaison roles. Informational interviews became my favorite thing to do. I even started a freelance writing business on the side to practice my skills. That side business became handy when in 2018, I was suddenly laid off from my post-doc due to funding cuts (ha, I told you academia was unreliable).

The skills I was learning in my PhD and in my post-doc were valuable and they were usable in other industries.

Today, I know I would not have built up those skills if I had quit in the midst of my frustration.

Should you quit your PhD program?

If you want to quit your PhD, I understand you.

Perhaps, if things I had been different for me and I had figured out a career path I could be happy with, I would have.

Take this from someone who cried on her way to school one day because the rigor of the program finally got to me – I get you.

If you’re thinking of quitting your PhD, I challenge you to think about these questions.

  • Are you experiencing stress? As PhDs, we study subjects and topics very few people in the world are studying. This in of itself can feel mentally isolating. And this isolation can have an impact on your mental health. Is this what is happening to you? If it is, then you should take a break. This may involve speaking with your PI. It may also involve you seeking counseling with a professional. Please don’t feel like you just have to “suck it up”. You may find that after you take a break and get counseling help, you are better equipped to handle the stress that comes with a PhD program. If these don’t help at all, quitting might be the right path for you.
  • Will a PhD change your prospects for a fulfilling career? Of course, a PhD is not required for a fulfilling career, in general. But for the purposes of your goals, will a PhD change or improve your prospects? In my case, I found out that it did. This where you have to do your research. Are there people in your field, doing the kind of work you want to do without a PhD? Find out how they did it. If you can repeat their process, quitting your PhD may be the right thing for you.
  • Should you change what you’re studying? Maybe, it is not your PhD program. Maybe it is what you’re studying. Sometimes people change what they are studying at the PhD level and voila, the problem is solved! Or perhaps they decide to go to law school or medical school instead.

In conclusion

Like I mentioned in the beginning, I know three really smart people who quit their PhD programs and are thriving in life.

Quitting your PhD program is not the end of everything. Life goes on and it can be beautiful.

So once you’ve made the decision to quit, I encourage you to take the plunge and carve a path that suits you.

All I ask is that you think about the three questions above and answer them for yourself before you do.

Enrolling for a PhD requires a big commitment from your side. This is because, in order to complete your research successfully, you will need to put in a lot of effort. Typically, PhD researchers study topics that have not been researched before, meaning that they need to be dedicated to their research and manage their time diligently. This is where some students or researchers can start having second thoughts. Many researchers start thinking about quitting when things are not going well. But is giving up half way through really worth it? This article will help you in making the decision.

Why You Should Keep Going

When you begin to doubt your capabilities, you need to refocus on the potential benefits that could be attained from the PhD. This refocusing exercise will help in refreshing your mind and remembering why you started your PhD journey in the first place. There are several benefits of attaining a PhD, and it can help your career massively in the long run. According to estimates, nearly 86% of PhD graduates are employed in either full-time or part-time work. This is a highly significant number, indicating that PhD graduates are very employable, and the degree will therefore prove to be beneficial. In addition, it is also estimated that the remaining 14% of graduates are also likely to be self-employed or studying further. A PhD is a very versatile qualification because it allows you to choose various forms of employment. You could either choose to work for someone else or become an entrepreneur. In addition, you could also become a professor at a university. Thus, attaining a PhD opens up a lot of options for you. Leaving your research unfinished may lead to regrets and therefore you will find that most people would advise for you to keep going, even when you face challenges.

While pursuing a PhD, there are several phases when you feel demotivated and begin to consider your options. This may be due to lack of time, feeling overwhelmed, or being unhappy with the results that you have been obtaining. In such cases, you should look to find motivations that can drive you towards your goal of completin+g the PhD. For instance, along with a PhD comes the honour of being able to contribute to human knowledge. This is a key motivating factor that could inspire you to continue your degree. In case you are reconsidering your options and are unsure of what to do, you need to remember why you chose to pursue a PhD in the first place. This will make you realise the key motivation that you originally had. It can also help you in finding a purpose. If you are able to contribute to humanity and play your part in building a better society, it could prove to be a major achievement. By focusing on such goals, you can ensure that you continue your efforts towards graduating. This way, you will continue to remain on track and ultimately achieve your goals.

Reasons for Quitting

On the other hand, there are times when you simply cannot continue pursuing your PhD. This situation arises when you begin to feel that even after years of efforts, you have not made any progress. Such a state of affairs can prove to be extremely disheartening, and as a result you may find that you do not have any motivation for conducting your research and are simply forcing yourself to continue. In such a critical scenario, it can be a wise decision to move on. This is because our physical and mental well-being is of paramount importance. It should be placed above all other factors. If continuing your research makes you miserable, it is simply not worth it. Also, pressuring yourself to continue unnecessarily can cause permanent damage to your aspirations in life. Rather than allowing this to happen, it is always better to realise when is the right time to move on. Thus, if you feel that you have given it all you had and are still not achieving any results, it may be a mature decision on your part to quit.

Another aspect that you need to consider is the financial requirements of a PhD. Attaining such a degree does not come cheap. You have to make a lot of investments in your research, especially if the university is not providing you with sufficient funding. If you begin to feel that you have invested a majority of your funds towards your PhD and are still unable to make any progress, it may be a good decision to quit. Often, researchers tend to continue investing funds towards their PhD in the hope of recouping those investments in the future. However, they are not always able to perform to the best of their abilities after completing their PhD. In such cases, they begin to feel regretful about the investments that they have made towards the degree. Therefore, it is always advisable to cut your losses and move on when you feel that you will not be able to complete the PhD without raising additional funding. Rather than borrowing funds and ending up with even more debt, it is better to know when to quit.

Thus, to sum up, it is clear that attaining a PhD can be good for your career. However, this often comes at a cost. One has to invest a lot of time and put in dedicated efforts in order to attain a PhD. If you begin to lose motivation, it is always advisable to think about the reasons why you enrolled in the first place. This could help you in getting back on track. However, if you are unable to motivate yourself despite repeated efforts, it is advisable to quit. No degree is worth it if it begins to cause actual damage to your physical and mental well-being. How to Know When It’s Time to Quit Your Ph.D. Program

Earning a doctorate of any sort is difficult. After years of study, candidates must pass a qualification exam, write a lengthy dissertation or complete a capstone project, and defend their research and conclusions in front of a panel.

And unlike most other degree programs, research doctorates – commonly known as Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D., degrees – frequently do not have precise parameters on how long they take to finish.

Uncertainty surrounding when graduation day will arrive is one of the challenging aspects of these programs, and Ph.D. students often struggle to plan for the future when they don’t have an end date in mind, says Adam Ruben, who has a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.

“It’s so indeterminate, how long it will last,” says Ruben, who wrote a satirical book called “Surviving Your Stupid, Stupid Decision to Go to Grad School.”

“People ask you how long it will be until you graduate, and most of the time you tell them you have no idea,” he adds. “It’s not really until that last six-month stretch or so, when you have a thesis defense date scheduled, and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, that you know how long it is going to be.”

Students who have started to regret their decision to enter a Ph.D. program should carefully evaluate whether it makes sense to stay in graduate school, experts say.

“Sometimes, openly considering quitting as a real option can help you to reconnect with why you started the PhD in the first place, and why you would like to stay,” Katherine Firth, an academic adviser at the University of Melbourne in Australia, who has a Ph.D. and supervises Ph.D. students, wrote in an email.

Noncompletion and Academic Delays

Many people who enroll in Ph.D. programs leave those programs without Ph.D. degrees or take longer than eight years to finish their studies.

Ph.D. completion statistics from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences reveal that only 42% of humanities Ph.D. students in the U.S. who began pursuing their degrees sometime between 1996 and 2006 had doctorates eight years later.

Research on Ph.D. program attrition indicates that conflict between Ph.D. students and their academic advisers increases the odds that students will leave grad school. Frustration that arises while coming up with ideas for a dissertation or capstone, completing that project and defending it can be a major source of stress for Ph.D. students, many of whom leave their programs after completing doctoral coursework but before finalizing and successfully defending their work, research shows.

Additionally, Ph.D. students often express a need for additional funding, mental health services and professional mentoring.

Ph.D. program alumni often say they were mistreated by faculty during graduate school. A global survey of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers at academic science institutions, published in May 2021, revealed that 84% of current and former science Ph.D. students and postdocs felt that an academic supervisor had treated them abusively.

“Cases where people are facing harassment, bullying or exclusion for example, might mean a person decides the only safe option is to quit, but a better academic culture would let them stay and complete,” says Firth.

Reasons to Leave a Ph.D. Program

When a Ph.D. Won’t Help You Get Where You Want to Go

Alumni of Ph.D. programs say one valid reason to exit a Ph.D. program is if having a Ph.D. is not necessary for you to achieve your professional aspirations.

Lt. Col. Robert Solano, a U.S. Army aviator and commander for the federal Defense Contract Management Agency, exited a distance learning, predominantly online Ph.D. program in aviation science several years ago. He realized he could advance in the military and thrive as an entrepreneur and investor without a doctorate.

“You don’t need Ph.D. behind your name to show the world your self-worth and the value that you bring,” he adds. “I wish I’d understood that sooner in the process.”

Solano, who was a part-time Ph.D. student with a full-time military career and military scholarships, had acquired around $15,000 of debt to finance his Ph.D. studies, he says.

“One of my biggest deciding factors was that I felt like the dissertation process didn’t allow me to be creative and pursue research that was going to be really meaningful and impactful in my career and my life,” Solano says, adding that he submitted three dissertation research proposals that were rejected. “I could not imagine doing that for the next two to four years of my life, struggling with a dissertation board, and I think that was really the biggest factor for me.”

When Your Well-Being Is at Risk

Experts say it’s worth considering pausing or ending your studies if they are significantly interfering with other important aspects of your life, such as your family, health and relationships.

For Solano, the volume of Ph.D. reading and writing assignments he had to complete often felt overwhelming when combined with his professional duties. “I was declining in happiness and declining in health,” he says.

Solano also worried that time spent on doctoral studies would take away from time with the woman who later became his wife, he says.

“If I could have done one thing differently, it would have been paying closer attention to that and not sacrificing those two things – my happiness and health,” he says.

When You Find Another Way

Sometimes Ph.D. students receive job offers for their dream positions during their Ph.D. studies. In those cases, “they might choose to leave because they have already achieved their goals,” Firth says.

Another valid reason to leave a Ph.D. program, she says, is if a student discovers that the actual experience of obtaining a Ph.D. “is not what they signed up for, and it doesn’t suit them after all.”

What to Do if You’re Considering Quitting

Ask for Advice from Someone Other Than Your Thesis Adviser

Certain problems with Ph.D. programs, such as disagreements and misunderstandings with advisers, may be addressed by seeking help from various faculty members or administrators at your grad school and outside experts who aren’t on your thesis committee, experts say.

“There are other folks that (students) can go to for help and perspective, on and off campus,” says Jennifer Polk, a Ph.D. recipient who provides career consulting to Ph.D. students and alumni via her consulting firm, “From Ph.D. to Life.”

Ph.D. students often feel disempowered and isolated, Polk says, but “if the decision is whether to quit or not, that actually gives you power.”

“If you’re willing to walk away, you have power, so you can go and talk to other professors,” she adds. “You can go and talk to the chair of the department. … You can escalate to the graduate dean. There might be other offices you can go to before you burn it all down.”

Firth notes that sometimes changes to a Ph.D. program — such as a switch from one adviser to another or a change to a thesis committee — can address a Ph.D. student’s concerns and negate the desire to quit. Transitioning to part-time study or taking a leave of absence could make sense, and so could shifting between locations if a university has multiple campuses, she adds.

“Sometimes people think they have to quit, but they could seek out other adjustments,” Firth wrote. It’s also important for Ph.D. students in distress to evaluate whether their “current problems might go away with time or are here to stay,” she says.

Consider Whether You Are Being Too Self-Critical

It is common for Ph.D. students to have a crisis of confidence in the middle of their studies, but Ruben cautions that doubts about personal competence may simply be impostor syndrome in disguise.

Though skepticism is frequently beneficial when conducting academic research, it can become destructive if it compromises someone’s faith in themselves, he says.

“The problem is if you apply that skepticism to your own abilities and you apply it too harshly and say, ‘I’m no good. I’m the worst person here. I don’t deserve to be here,'” Ruben says. “You’re going to feel terrible and you may also make some decisions that you wouldn’t necessarily have made if you had a better sense of your own abilities and interests.”

It’s OK to quit your PhD

Occasionally I’m asked about quitting, particularly “quitting” a PhD program. This happened several times last week, when I was in Vancouver.

Contrary to what you may hear or what your own internal critics tell you, there’s no shame in moving on. I remember a long post on a Versatile PhD forum from “PJ,” an ABD thinking about leaving instead of spending another two years (minimum) to finish their PhD. In response, one commenter wrote, “But the real question is, do you want to be a quitter? Now, not everyone will view that question the same, and I’m sure many will say that equating quitting a PhD program to being a quitter is not valid, but in reality, it is.” No! Thankfully, most other commenters on the thread offered more nuanced and helpful reflections and advice. “Finishing is not just about the destination,” one former tenure-track professor pointed out. “If that’s the only thing you want, then it’s a tough few years ahead.” Indeed.

Before you make the decision to leave, separate your inner critic – who may well be reflecting outer critics in your life – from what you know is right for you. Trust your gut, not your gremlin. In my experience, this is a decision that individuals make and re-make over time. I’ve worked with a few clients who’ve contemplated not finishing their PhD programs. While you figure out what you want, it’s ok to be ambivalent, carrying on the work but distancing yourself psychologically and emotionally from academia. What are your goals? Once you know them, you can determine the correct strategy to move toward them. (With thanks to Harvey P. Weingarten’s recent post .)

The “no one likes a quitter” attitude that exists in graduate school and perhaps in academia writ large isn’t warranted. There is nothing inherently good or bad about completing a PhD. It’s only a good move for you if it is a good move for you. While individuals who depart sans degree will come to their own personal conclusions about their decisions, the wide world rarely cares. It’s instructive that in PJ’s original post, they mentioned that their former undergraduate professors were unanimous in advising them to quit. I’ll let English professor (and graduate advisor) Leonard Cassuto speak for ideal advisors everywhere: “Most of my advisees finish their dissertations and get jobs. I’m proud of them. But some walk away – and of that group I’m just as proud” ( Graduate School Mess , p. 121). I feel the same way about my own clients, whatever path they choose to take.

A while back Christine Slocum reflected on her career journey in a Transition Q & A post . She’d completed an MA and then two years of a PhD program, then moved on before achieving ABD status. In her post she explains there were several reasons for her choice, including feeling burnt out, lack of community in her department, and desire to start a family. Pursuing the doctorate no longer meshed with her goals: “After some soul searching, I remembered that the reason I was pursuing sociology in the first place was to better understand the mechanisms of social stratification because I wanted to better understand how to undo it. ​Four years of graduate study [later,] I felt like I had enough that the next five years would be better spent working for an NGO, nonprofit, or government position getting practical experience in the field.”

Heather Steel made a similar decision when she decided not to continue her PhD in the midst of dissertating. She learned important information about herself during graduate school. “There were parts of my program that I enjoyed very much (classes, having the chance to read and think, teaching, and my colleagues), but in the end,” she realized, “sitting for hours in front of a microfilm reader to write something that few people would actually read was not fulfilling.” Heather learned that she enjoys “research in small doses, not projects that take years to see results.” When I did an informational interview with her during my transition, I learned that she didn’t regret her choices. Her career has continued to progress since then.

When I was in Vancouver, a graduate student in the audience at one of my talks shared his own story: He’d been enrolled in a PhD programs years before, then left. But here he was back doing another doctorate! He was nearly done, and this time around he knew it was the correct path for him. I know several people who’ve done similar things, for a variety of reasons. Fascinating, eh?

If completing your PhD is the right move for you, carry on. Get support and help wherever you can find it, go part-time, or take a break or leave or absence. Make whatever changes you need to smooth your journey. But if the doctorate no longer makes sense — your goals have changed, you’ve learned more about yourself over the years — then I’ve got your back (in spirit) in deciding not to continue. You’re not “quitting” or “leaving”; instead, you’re embarking on a new, better-for-you path, taking what you learned and experienced and applying it in a context that’s more suitable to who you are, how you work best, and where you want to go. That’s risky and brave, but it’s also just you standing up for yourself. It took me until after my PhD to do that. Feel free to do as I didn’t.

Of course it’s okay to quit. If fact, I would encourage anyone to quit who would clearly be better off leaving a program and getting on with their lives. Life is precious and there are a lot of better ways to spend it than wasting away in a grad program.

It’s a sad statement on higher ed that an article like this has to even be written. Why should a student feel obligated to work away on a degree, when there are little to no job opportunities with the degree in hand? Especially if they don’t have funding and are going into debt?

I heard an employer once say that they’d be more likely to hire someone who quit a PhD program, since it would demonstrate that they could see it was not a good use of time and resources.

Years ago I was an ABD. I was married with 3 children and struggling financially. I was offered a position at a very attractive salary. I accepted the position and left the Faculty of Graduate Studies in “Good Standing”. A few years later an opportunity arose at my workplace which allowed me to complete a Doctorate at a different university in a different program. Leaving the original program and university was not the end of the world.

What is being ignored here is the nobility-like status of being able to add “Dr.” in front of your name. Even if others find it laughable, internally, this could be a motivation and feeling that you have achieved something in life that the majority of others didn’t (not saying they couldn’t but they didn’t!).

Also, throughout your life you are likely meet individuals who would show tremendous respect to the fact that you have a PhD whatever the field might be, even if they don’t offer you a job or pay you more money.

The internal and sometimes external respect and the sense of belonging to a select group is important in my view, and at least for me was an important part in motivating me to pursue my PhD was the fact that I could put “Dr.” in front of my name and belong to a select club.

I see what you mean, but I also think the value of the “Dr” is over-inflated in academia and those of us who are from that culture. Don’t get me wrong. I still get a kick out of being called a Dr… at the same time that it’s incredibly awkward. Depending on the company–for instance, if I’m around people who couldn’t access postsecondary education, let along secondary, which I do at times in my work–it can feel embarrassing to flaunt my title and my privileged access to (and resources to finish) a graduate degree. And I don’t need the title, at least not always, to get respect. It has strategic uses, but almost 3 years after graduating, I’m more energized when people recognize the work I do currently, which is outside of academia. I do want my more senior colleagues to address me as Dr. in professional settings, but only because it is appropriate–I work with many medical doctors and getting them to recognize that “I’m a Dr too!” has been a bit of a struggle.

Talking to friends who are in the process of finishing their degree (with a very real possibility that they won’t due to various barriers), I see the reverse of the pride and prestige associated with the Dr status rear its ugly head — shame. I think THAT more than the prestige of the title itself is concerning. Those of us who managed to finish our degrees should definitely feel proud of what we did and relish that title. But for those who did not finish their degrees to feel shame or be shamed is really unfortunate… because we achieve so much more than our degrees in our graduate programs, that are not recognized by the academic industry (because the truth is, education IS an industry). Defending our dissertations is just one milestone among many.

So yes–I agree that we shouldn’t undermine the value–external and internal–placed on the Dr status. But I also think both can happen at the same time: recognizing the prestige of the status AND moving away from shame-based discourse around not finishing/quitting/leaving the PhD process, whatever the reason might be.

Very nice to hear this discussion. I, like the audience member in their second doctorate program, quit my first then went back to complete a second doctorate. Unfortunately when I finished, I realized that my motivations were not the best ones for such an investment of time and money. So I learned, later than I wished, that sticking with the first decision to quit was actually the better one. No on should feel ‘less than’ for reevaluating their choices and finding what works; there are so many great adventures out there!

There were parts of my PhD that were fun and there were parts that made me want to quit and give up. Part of the process for me was learning which aspects of my academic program appealed to me and learning to be resilient regardless of the situation. I graduated and now I work for a company that recognizes my degree.

In high school, I knew college would be an important step toward success and a career. Nonetheless, my deeper desires involved finding "the one" — friends-to-lovers style.

I had a full scholarship to the college of my dreams, but I quickly shifted focus from my studies to my personal development. I wanted to know more about myself than my classes.

And that's what I did. I created a podcast with my friends. I fell in love with my best friend and got my friends-to-lovers romance. We even got married in college. I also discovered my passion for mental health.

But by the end of my senior year, reality started to set in. I became so fearful of graduation because I had no job prospects or future plans. I suddenly realized I would become a stay-at-home wife , and that terrified me even more.

To avoid that, I desperately searched for a career and enrolled in a graduate program I wasn't interested in.

I quickly lost interest in my Ph.D. program

I was among a small number of students who were able to get into a Ph.D. program directly from undergrad.

I was an academic in training, which meant having two part-time jobs, doing side research projects, and attending class. I saw my husband less, but he supported the sacrifice as long as I got what I wanted. I started working at 8 a.m. and finished around 7 p.m. I worked on the weekends, too.

The Pinterest-inspired home I hoped to have would have required my creativity and time, both of which are limited resources when you're running the career race. So, we kept the white walls, with no time to hang the framed pictures of our wedding day .

I started therapy during this time, and I was forced to address the fear and anxiety that had pushed me to jump head-first into a career I wasn't sure about. Toward the end of my first semester , I knew this career was not for me. I wasn't able to invest in my marriage. I wasn't able to write creatively on topics that mattered. I wasn't becoming who I wanted to be.

So, I left the program, prompting everyone in my life to wonder why I would leave a school that would earn me the highest degree you can get in academics.

I chose to be a wife and mother instead

After leaving my program, I felt relief, then sadness, and then relief again. Undergrad was about becoming myself, but graduate school showed me the realities of unbecoming — unbecoming a perfectionist, unbecoming a planner, and unbecoming a high-achiever . The pain of unbecoming had given me the freedom to change.

When I let go of grinding toward a career, I learned about my desire to be a mother. I wanted to share the beauties of the world with someone else, someone I created. Now, I'm pregnant .

When I let go of the negative connotations of being a stay-at-home wife, I realized my desire to make my home into a creative and comfortable space. So, I created it. When I let go of the fear of being a wife, I saw my husband as a compassionate, servant, and loving person who needed it in return. Now, I give love freely. When I let go of the fear of people seeing me as wasted potential, I found writing again. So, I write.

This is not what I expected for my post-graduation life , but my life is both better and different than my expectations.

In the year after graduation, I've learned that becoming's shadow is unbecoming. They exist together. The becoming is full of excitement and hope. The unbecoming is full of pain, truth, and even fear. But there's hope on the horizon.

Dissertating Like a Distance Runner: Ten Tips for Finishing Your PhD

Farah become a British hero when he and his training partner, Galen Rupp, won the gold and silver medals in the 10k at the London Olympic Games.

I had the honor of racing against Rupp at Nike’s Boarder Clash meet between the fastest high school distance runners in my home state of Washington and Rupp’s home state of Oregon. I’m happy to provide a link to the results and photos of our teenage selves since I beat Galen and Washington won the meet. (Note: In the results, ‘Owen’ is misspelled with the commonly added s , which I, as a fan of Jesse Owens, feel is an honor.) By the time we were running in college—Rupp for the University of Oregon and myself for the University of Washington—he was on an entirely different level. I never achieved anything close to the kind of running success Rupp has had. Yet, for most of us mortals, the real value in athletics is the character traits and principles that sports instill in us, and how those principles carry over to other aspects of life. Here I want to share ten principles that the sport of distance running teaches, which I found to be quite transferrable to writing my doctoral dissertation.

To provide some personal context, I began as a doctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham in 2014. At that time my grandparents, who helped my single father raise my sister and me, continued their ongoing struggle with my Grandfather’s Alzheimer’s. It was becoming increasingly apparent that they would benefit from having my wife and I nearby. So, in 2015 we moved to my hometown of Yakima, Washington. That fall I began a 2/2 teaching load at a small university on the Yakama Nation Reservation as I continued to write my dissertation. Since finishing my PhD four years ago, in 2018, I have published one book , five research articles , and two edited volume chapters related in various ways to my dissertation. As someone living in rural Eastern Washington, who is a first-gen college grad, I had to find ways to stay self-motivated and to keep chipping away at my academic work. I found the following principles that I learned through distance running very helpful.

(1) Establish community . There are various explanations, some of which border on superstitious, for why Kenyan distance runners have been so dominant. Yet one factor is certainly the running community great Kenyan distance runners benefit from at their elite training camps, as discussed in Train Hard, Win Easy: The Kenyan Way . Having a community that values distance running can compel each member of the community to pursue athletic excellence over a long period of time. The same can be said for academic work. Many doctoral researchers have built-in community in their university departments, but for various reasons this is not true for everyone. Thankfully, alternative ways to establish community have never been easier, predominantly due to technology.

Since my dissertation applied Aristotelian causation and neo-Thomistic hylomorphism to mental causation and neural correlates of consciousness, I found it immensely helpful to meet consistently with neuroscientist, Christof Koch, and philosopher of mind, Mihretu Guta. Mihretu does work on the philosophy of consciousness and Christof propelled the dawn of the neurobiology of consciousness with Francis Crick . Though Mihretu lives in Southern California, we met monthly through Skype, and I would drive over the Cascade Mountains once a month to meet with Christof in Seattle. As my dissertation examiner, Anna Marmodoro, once reminded me: the world is small—it’s easier than ever before to connect with other researchers.

It can also be helpful to keep in mind that your community can be large or small. As some athletes train in large camps consisting of many runners, others have small training groups, such as the three Ingebrigtsen brothers . Likewise, your community could be a whole philosophy department or several close friends. You can also mix it up. As an introvert, I enjoyed my relatively small consistent community, but I also benefitted from attending annual regional philosophy conferences where I could see the same folks each year. And I especially enjoyed developing relationships with other international researchers interested in Aristotelian philosophy of mind at a summer school hosted by the University of Oxford in Naples, which Marmodoro directed. For a brief period, we all stayed in a small villa and talked about hylomorphism all day, each day, while enjoying delicious Italian food.

Whatever your community looks like, whatever shape it takes, what matters is that you’re encouraged toward accomplishing your academic goal.

(2) Know your goal. Like writing a dissertation, becoming a good distance runner requires a lot of tedious and monotonous work. If you don’t have a clear goal of what you want to achieve, you won’t get up early, lace up your running shoes, and enter the frosty morning air as you take the first of many steps in your morning run. There are, after all, more enticing and perhaps even more pressing things to do. Similarly, if you don’t have a clear goal of when you want to finish your dissertation, it is easy to put off your daily writing for another day, which can easily become more distant into the future.

(3) Be realistic about your goal . While it is important to have a clear goal as a distance runner and as a doctoral researcher, it is important for your goal to be realistic. This means your goal should take into account the fact that you are human and therefore have both particular strengths and limitations. Everyone enters the sport of distance running with different strengths and weaknesses. When Diddy ran the city it would have been unrealistic for him to try to break the two-hour barrier in the marathon, as Eliud Kipchoge did . If Diddy made that his goal, he probably would have lost all hope in the first mile of the marathon and never finished. Because he set a more realistic goal of breaking four hours, not two hours, he paced himself accordingly and actually finished.

The parent of two young children who is teaching part-time can certainly finish a dissertation. But the parent will have a greater likelihood of doing so with a reasonable goal that fits that individual’s strengths and limitations. If the parent expects to finish on the same timescale as someone who is single with no children nor teaching responsibilities, this will likely lead to disappointment and less motivation in the middle of the process. Motivation will remain higher, and correspondingly so will productivity that is fueled by motivation, if one’s goal is realistic and achievable.

Another element of having a realistic goal is being willing to adapt the goal as your circumstances change. Sometimes a runner might enter a race expecting to place in the top five and midway through the race realize that she has a great chance of winning (consider, for example, Des Linden’s victory at the Boston Marathon ). At that point, it would be wise to revise one’s goal to be ‘win the race’ rather than simply placing in the top five. At other times, a runner might expect to win the race or be on the podium and midway realize that is no longer possible. Yet, if she is nevertheless within striking distance of placing in the top five, then she can make that her new goal, which is realistic given her current situation and will therefore sustain her motivation to the finish line. Sara Hall, who could have and wanted to crack the top three, held on for fifth at the World Championships marathon because she adjusted her goal midrace.

The PhD candidate who initially plans to finish her dissertation in three years but then finds herself in the midst of a pandemic or dealing with a medical issue or a family crisis may not need to give up on her goal of finishing her dissertation. Perhaps, she only needs to revise her goal so that it allows more time, so she finishes in five years rather than three. A PhD finished in five years is certainly more valuable than no PhD.

(4) Know why you want to achieve your goal . My high school cross-country coach, Mr. Steiner, once gave me a book about distance running entitled “Motivation is the Name of the Game.” It is one of those books you don’t really need to read because the main takeaway is in the title. Distance running requires much-delayed gratification—you must do many things that are not intrinsically enjoyable (such as running itself, ice baths, going to bed early, etc.) in order to achieve success. If you don’t have a solid reason for why you want to achieve your running goal, you won’t do the numerous things you do not want to do but must do to achieve your goal. The same is true for finishing a PhD. Therefore, it is important to know the reason(s) why you want to finish your dissertation and why you want a PhD.

As a side note, it can also be immensely helpful to choose a dissertation topic that you are personally very interested in, rather than a topic that will simply make you more employable. Of course, being employable is something many of us must consider. Yet, if you pick a topic that is so boring to you that you have significant difficulty finding the motivation to finish your dissertation, then picking an “employable dissertation topic” will be anything but employable.

(5) Prioritize your goal . “Be selfish” were the words of exhortation my college cross-country team heard from our coaches before we returned home for Christmas break. As someone who teaches ethics courses, I feel compelled to clarify that “be selfish” is not typically good advice. However, to be fair to my coaches, the realistic point they were trying to convey was that at home we would be surrounded by family and friends who may not fully understand our running goals and what it takes to accomplish them. For example, during my first Christmas break home from college, I was trying to run eighty miles per week. Because I was trying to fit these miles into my social schedule without much compromise, many of these miles were run in freezing temps, in the dark, on concrete sidewalks with streetlights, rather than dirt trails. After returning to campus following the holidays, I raced my first indoor track race with a terribly sore groin, which an MRI scan soon revealed was due to a stress fracture in my femur. I learned the hard way that I have limits to what I can do, which entails I must say “no thanks” to some invitations, even though that may appear selfish to some.

A PhD researcher writing a dissertation has a substantial goal before her. Yet, many people writing a dissertation have additional responsibilities, such as teaching, being a loving spouse, a faithful friend, or a present parent. As I was teaching while writing my dissertation, I often heard the mantra “put students first.” Yet, I knew if I prioritized my current students over and above finishing my dissertation, I would, like many, never finish my dissertation. However, I knew it would be best for my future students to be taught by an expert who has earned a PhD. So, I put my future students first by prioritizing finishing my PhD . This meant that I had to limit the teaching responsibilities I took on. Now, my current students are benefitting from my decision, as they are taught by an expert in my field.

While prioritizing your dissertation can mean putting it above some things in life, it also means putting it below other things. A friend once told me he would fail in a lot of areas in life before he fails as a father, which is often what it means to practically prioritize one goal above another. Prioritizing family and close friendships need not mean that you say ‘yes’ to every request, but that you intentionally build consistent time into your schedule to foster relationships with the people closest to you. For me, this practically meant not working past 6:00pm on weekdays and taking weekends off to hang out with family and friends. This relieved pressure, because I knew that if something went eschew with my plan to finish my PhD, I would still have the people in my life who I care most about. I could then work toward my goal without undue anxiety about the possibility of failing and the loss that would entail. I was positively motivated by the likely prospect that I would, in time, finish my PhD, and be able to celebrate it with others who supported me along the way.

(6) Just start writing . Yesterday morning, it was five degrees below freezing when I did my morning run. I wanted to skip my run and go straight to my heated office. So, I employed a veteran distance running trick to successfully finish my run. I went out the door and just started running. That is the hardest part, and once I do it, 99.9% of the time I finish my run.

You may not know what exactly you think about a specific topic in the chapter you need to write, nor what you are going to write each day. But perhaps the most simple and helpful dissertation advice I ever received was from David Horner, who earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Oxford. He told me: “just start writing.” Sometimes PhD researchers think they must have all their ideas solidified in their mind before they start writing their dissertation. In fact, writing your dissertation can actually help clarify what you think. So “just start writing” is not only simple but also sage advice.

(7) Never write a dissertation . No great marathoner focuses on running 26.2 miles. Great distance runners are masters of breaking up major goals into smaller goals and then focusing on accomplishing one small goal at a time, until they have achieved the major goal. Philosophers can understand this easily, as we take small, calculated steps through minor premises that support major premises to arrive at an overall conclusion in an argument.

Contained within each chapter of a dissertation is a premise(s) in an overall argument and individual sections can contain sub-premises supporting the major premise of each chapter. When you first start out as a doctoral researcher working on your dissertation, you have to construct an outline of your dissertation that maps out the various chapters and how they will relate to your overall conclusion. Once you have that outline in place, keep it in the back of your mind. But do not focus on writing the whole, which would be overwhelming and discouraging. Rather, focus on writing whichever chapter you are working on. The fastest American marathoner, Ryan Hall, wrote a book that sums up the only way to run long distances in the title Run the Mile You’re In . And Galen Rupp discusses in this interview how he mentally breaks up a marathon into segments and focuses on just finishing one segment at a time. Whatever chapter you’re writing, make it your goal to write that chapter. Once you’ve accomplished that goal, set a new goal: write the next chapter. Repeat that process several times and you will be halfway through your dissertation. Repeat the process a few more times, and you will be done.

By the time you have finished a master’s degree, you have written many chapter-length papers. To finish a dissertation, you essentially write about eight interconnected papers, one at a time, just as you have done many times before. If you just write the chapter (which you could call a “paper” if that feels like a lighter load) you’re writing, before you know it, you will have written a dissertation.

(8) Harness the power of habits . Becoming a great distance runner requires running an inordinate number of miles, which no one has the willpower to do. The best marathoners in the world regularly run well over one hundred miles a week, in addition to stretching, lifting weights, taking ice baths, and eating healthy. Not even the most tough-minded distance runner has the gumption to make all the individual decisions that would be required in order to get out the door for every run and climb into every ice bath apart from the development of habits. The most reliable way around each distance runner’s weakness of will, or akrasia , is developing and employing habits. The same can be true for writing.

If you simply try to write a little bit each weekday around the same time, you will develop a habit of writing at that time each day. Once you have that habit, the decision to write each weekday at that time will require less and less willpower over time. Eventually, it will take some willpower to not write at that time. I have found it helpful to develop the routine of freewriting for a few minutes just before starting my daily writing session of thirty minutes during which I write new content, before working on editing or revising existing content for about thirty minutes. My routine helped me develop the daily habit of writing, which removes the daily decision to write, as I “just do it” (to use Nike’s famous line) each day.

I have also found it helpful to divide my days up according to routines. As a morning person, I do well writing and researching in the morning, doing teaching prep and teaching during the middle of the day, and then doing mundane tasks such as email at the end of the day.

(9) Write for today and for tomorrow . Successful distance runners train for two reasons. One reason—to win upcoming races—is obvious. However, in addition to training for upcoming races, the successful distance runner trains today for the training that they want to be capable of months and years ahead. You cannot simply jump into running eighty, ninety, or one-hundred-mile weeks. It takes time to condition your body to sustain the stress of running high mileage weeks. A runner must have a long-term perspective and plan ahead as she works toward her immediate goals on the way to achieving her long-term goals. Similarly, for the PhD researcher, writing a dissertation lays the groundwork for future success.

For one, if the PhD candidate develops healthy, sustainable, productive habits while writing a dissertation, these habits can be continued once they land an academic job. It is no secret that the initial years on the job market, or in a new academic position, can be just as (or more) challenging than finishing a PhD. Effective habits developed while writing a dissertation can be invaluable during such seasons, allowing one to continue researching and writing even with more responsibilities and less time.

It is also worth noting that there is a sense in which research writing becomes easier, as one becomes accustomed to the work. A distance runner who has been running for decades, logging thousands of miles throughout their career, can run relatively fast without much effort. For example, my college roommate, Travis Boyd, decided to set the world record for running a half marathon pushing a baby stroller nearly a decade after we ran for the University of Washington. His training was no longer what it once was during our collegiate days. Nevertheless, his past training made it much easier for him to set the record, even though his focus had shifted to his full-time business career and being a present husband and father of two. I once asked my doctoral supervisors, Nikk Effingham and Jussi Suikkanen, how they were able to publish so much. They basically said it gets easier, as the work you have done in the past contributes to your future publications. Granted, not everyone is going to finish their PhD and then become a research super human like Liz Jackson , who finished her PhD in 2019, and published four articles that same year, three the next, and six the following year. Nevertheless, writing and publishing does become easier as you gain years of experience.

(10) Go running . As Cal Newport discusses in Deep Work , having solid boundaries around the time we work is conducive for highly effective academic work. And there is nothing more refreshing while dissertating than an athletic hobby with cognitive benefits . So, perhaps the best way to dissertate like a distance runner is to stop writing and go for a run.

A doctoral degree is a major commitment. Think carefully.

I appreciated reading Kara Miller’s The Big Idea column “PhD: Pretty heavily disappointed” (Business, May 22), about people with doctoral degrees struggling to build careers in academia. It made me think back to a conversation I had when I was about to graduate from high school.

I happened to run into a former track coach of mine, and as we were reminiscing he asked me what I planned as a major in college. “History,” I responded. He said, “Why don’t you take some computer classes also? It never hurts to be able to do something useful.”

I did not reflect on his motivation at the time, but my track coach was a young guy, and he was probably giving me advice straight from his own life, as a parent trying to raise his own young children. I did take computer classes in college and ultimately received a PhD in chemical engineering. I always remember that conversation as being a kind of turning point.

Earning a doctoral degree is a life commitment of great proportion. It can take, as Miller notes, between four and seven years. If we think of working life as roughly between the ages of 22 and 65, then a PhD requires more than 10 percent of a person’s working life. People need to think carefully about that investment.

Two powerful arguments in favor of the path of science, technology, engineering, and math are that there tend to be more STEM jobs for PhDs, and many universities’ STEM departments are generous in covering their PhD students’ tuition and cost of studies, including a stipend toward food, rent, and other expenses.

As I prepared to graduate in 1995 with a doctor of education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, my mother memorably said to me, “Of my four children, you are the one with the most education and the smallest salary.” Apparently not much has changed in 30 years.

I must congratulate these students, however, on following their passion rather than following the money. I can’t help but think that their lives, though stressful, may contain greater happiness.

Not enough turnover from tenured professors, leaving little space for new faculty. Although the tenured, well-established professors are needed, it’s the junior faculty who are hungry and with new ideas that help build new programs. The whole graduate program model is a bad model. I worked two jobs, had my tuition and some type of minimal student health insurance and could barely cover the rent with my stipend, and the second job paid for everything else. Though I was working on many faculty projects, it was the faculty who said this would be good for me. Never did they say it was also good for them. (TravelerofNJ2)

I just retired from a tenured faculty position in science. I’m in my early 70s. I have colleagues who are still doing what they do well into their 70s, a couple approaching 80. There is no active incentive from the university to move the older faculty on, to make way for a new generation. (Lola-lola)

As an attorney, she really did not make that much money and was not doing the field of law of her choice. How many real estate closings can you do without dying of boredom? There's been plenty of back and forth this week about Diane Abbott, who had the Labour whip restored yesterday.

Despite this, questions remain over whether she will be able to stand for the party - with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer insisting she is not barred.

Speaking at a rally in her Hackney North and Stoke Newington constituency, she said: "By any means possible I will continue to stand as the candidate for Hackney North."

"I'm not going to allow myself to be intimidated or frightened by forces beyond all of our control," she added.

The rally was only organised last night when reports first emerged that she might be barred from standing.

Ms Abbott said she was "shocked" to hear the reports.

She didn't make clear during her speech at the rally whether she'd be prepared to run as an independent.

Earlier today, Darren Jones, Labour's shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, accused the Tories of launching a "severe" threat to family finances with their campaign pledges so far.

He claimed that the policy proposals - such as national service and a "triple-lock plus" for pensioners - could cost as much as £350 a month to mortgage holders.

Responding to this, a Conservative Party spokesman claimed "their own promises would come to a staggering £196.4bn of unfunded annual borrowing" under the same analysis.

The Tories claim this is "whacking Brits with a 6.9% interest-rate rise".

The spokesman said: "Really this is pathetic, desperate stuff from the Labour Party as they scramble to distract from the fact it has been proven Keir Starmer lied on multiple occasions about the Diane Abbott investigation.

"Now the Labour leader is embroiled in a ‘he said, she said’ with the veteran Labour MP, sending their limp campaign into even more of a tailspin.

"Instead of sticking out shoddy documents with made-up figures, Keir Starmer needs to explain why he repeatedly lied about the status of the Diane Abbott investigation, and when he plans to apologise to the British people."

The Democratic Unionist Party has just launched its general election campaign, and with it ratified Gavin Robinson as the new leader.

This comes afters meeting of the party's ruling executive on Wednesday.

Mr Robinson has been serving as interim leader since early April, when Jeffrey Donaldson resigned from the DUP and was suspended from the party after being charged with historical sexual offences.

"It is with honour, humility and commitment that I look forward to leading our party into the future," the new leader said.

On 12 June, Sky News will be hosting an election leaders event in Grimsby - a key marginal seat and one of our Target Towns this election year.

The Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and the Conservative leader Rishi Sunak have been invited to attend, and we are looking for a live audience to join us on the night.

Sir Keir has agreed to take part, with talks ongoing with Mr Sunak's team.

"This will give viewers the best opportunity to see the clear choice the country faces at this election."

Peter Craig , a journalist who has worked in Grimsby for 40 years, said this year's general election is "undiscovered territory" for the constituency.

The constituency of Grimsby and Cleethorpes is historically Labour, but switched to Conservative at the 2019 general election.

He says: "This is undiscovered territory, it's like shifting sands every day.

"We've got two of the main candidates announced, but we've also got a Conservative defection - a young Conservative councillor who has gone to be a Reform UK candidate for Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

"So you can't keep your eye off it for a minute."

Sophy Ridge   is presenting her show tonight from Grimsby, a key target town for Labour and the Tories.

She spent some of the day meeting voters to get their take on the election campaign so far - and asked them what they'd ask Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer if given the chance...

Sophy Ridge 's conversation with shadow social care minister  Andrew Gwynne now turns to the NHS - and plans to bolster appointments and cut waiting lists.

"We know that we are going to inherit an NHS that is struggling with a huge backlog of over seven million people on the waiting list," he says.

"If this backlog can't be curtailed, the kind of growth that we are seeing under the Conservatives… the list will just continue to grow and grow.

"This is a real concern."

Turning to Labour's policy to curtail this, Mr Gwynne says the party will send in "crack teams" to "work at cutting NHS waiting lists from day one of a Labour government".

This includes introducing 40,000 extra appointments a week.

He says this will be funded by "clamping down on tax dodgers".

Sophy questions this, saying such a pledge is becoming "meaningless" given it only seems to come up during election campaigns.

But Mr Gwynne insists this NHS plan has been costed for "some time".

Up next on the show is shadow social care minister  Andrew Gwynne  of Labour. 

He's asked by Sophy what the latest on Diane Abbott is, given the degree of confusion surrounding the current state of play. 

"She is a Labour member of parliament for as long as this parliament has left, which is a few hours, before it's dissolved [tomorrow]," he says. 

He then says there is still a process that needs to take place before she is allowed to stand for re-election in Hackney North and Stoke Newington.

"Firstly, you have to confirm to the party that you intend to be a candidate at the next election, and then you have to be approved by the National Executive Committee - and we all have to go through that process."

He says that decision is not up to him, but adds he "believes she has a future" in the party. 

'No decision has been taken'

"She has been that trailblazer for black and minority communities," he says.

"She's apologised for the hurt she caused by some careless comments that she made, [but] she is now a member of the parliamentary Labour Party again, but does have to go through the same process that every other Labour MP seeking re-election has to go through."

"Keir Starmer has made it very clear today no decision has been taken in respect of Diane Abbott," he concludes. 

Next, Sir Mark Spencer is asked about former prime minister Liz Truss - who will be appearing on the right-wing podcast "Lotus Eaters".

This is run by former UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin, who has previously said that he "wouldn't even rape" Labour MP Jess Phillips.

Asked about this, Sir Mark said these seem like "pretty abhorrent comments".

He said he would be surprised if Liz Truss "didn't think those comments were abhorrent as well".

"Liz Truss is of very solid moral fibre and would not support any abhorrent comment like that," he adds.

So should she appear on the platform?

Sir Mark doesn't say, only stressing that MPs appear on "all sorts of platforms".

Sir Mark Spencer , the food, farming and fisheries minister, now discusses his thoughts on apprenticeships. 

This comes after we reported that the Conservatives will promise to replace "rip-off degrees" with 100,000 apprenticeships each year by the end of the next parliament if they win the general election.

Rishi Sunak said the Conservatives will replace "under-performing" university courses with "high quality apprenticeships", which he said would leave them financially better off and provide better opportunities.

"This is about actually giving young people opportunity, both in their education, to make sure they go on to great careers," Sir Mark says. 

"I think the apprenticeship route actually is the best route for many of those young people. 

He explains that some will of course want to go to university - giving examples of wannabe lawyers and doctors - but other career paths may be better served by apprenticeship schemes.
