The Holy Rosary

What is the rosary? It’s mainly a prayerful meditation on the life of Jesus. In other words it is “praying” the Gospel. The Gospel is the “good news” of Jesus Christ. The rosary is also a devotion in honor of the Virgin Mary, His mother.

The word rosary comes from Latin and means a garland of roses. The rose is one of the flowers used to symbolize the Virgin Mary, the mother of God.

How is it organized? The rosary consists of a set number of specific prayers. First are the introductory prayers:The sign of the Cross, One Apostles’ Creed, One Our Father (the Lord’s Prayer),Three Hail Mary’s, One Glory Be.

The Apostles’ Creed is so called, not because it was composed by the apostles themselves, but because it expresses their teachings. It was based on an early baptismal creed. The original form of the creed came into use around A.D. 125, and the present form dates from the 400s.

The Our Father is Biblical. That’s right. It’s the prayer Jesus specifically told us to pray each day. Do you know it by heart? As a Christian, YOU SHOULD.

The Hail Mary is the Heart of it.It is the center of the Rosary. The prayer begins, "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee." This is nothing other than the greeting the angel Gabriel gave Mary in Luke 1:28

The next part reads this way:"Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus." This was exactly what Mary’s cousin Elizabeth said to her in Luke 1:42. The only thing that has been added to these two verses are the names "Jesus" and "Mary," to make clear who is being referred to.

So the first part of the Hail Mary is entirely biblical. This is important to point-out, because many non-Catholics believe it is made up by the Church and has nothing to do with Scripture. Some even believe it is a prayer worshiping Mary. This, of course is not true!

Catholics do not worship Mary!We venerate, or honor her, because she is the Mother of God.She was the person closest to Jesus, while he was on the earth.Surely, she is due the highest respect!

The second part of the Hail Mary is not taken straight from Scripture, but it is entirely biblical, in the thoughts it expresses. It reads: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

The mother of Jesus Christ,Mary, was certainly a very holy woman. According to scripture, “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” Who could possibly be more righteous than the person, chosen by God the Father, to be the mother of his incarnate son?In praying the rosary, we are asking her to pray for us.Since she is the holiest of creatures, her prayers are very powerful.

The fourth prayer found in the rosary is the Glory Be "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen." The Gloria is a brief hymn of praise in which all Christians can join. It’s been used since the fourth century

We’ve covered the opening prayers of the rosary. In fact, we’ve covered all the prayers of the rosary except the very last one, which is usually the Hail Queen (Salve Regina), sometimes called the Hail Holy Queen. "Hail holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy mother of God, that we may be made worthy, of the promises of Christ. “

The Decades. So,those are the prayers of the rosary. Between the introductory prayers and the concluding prayer is the body of the rosary: the decades. Each decade—there are twenty in a full rosary (which takes about sixty minutes to say)—is composed of ten Hail Marys. Each decade is bracketed between an Our Father and a Glory Be, so each decade actually has twelve prayers. At Saint Elizabeth’s Church we include the prayer of Fatima. This makes a total of 13 prayers in the decade.

The prayer of Fatima.O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fire of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

The Mysteries…Each decade is devoted to a mystery about the life of Jesus, or his mother. Here the word mystery refers to a truth of the faith, not to something incomprehensible, as in the line, "It’s a mystery to me!" The twenty mysteries are divided into four groups of five: the Joyful, the Sorrowful, the Glorious, and luminous. When people speak of "saying the rosary" they usually mean saying any set of five (which takes about fifteen minutes) rather than the recitation of all twenty mysteries

Where did the rosary come from?Monks!

They began with the Our Father.Monks in the early Church recited all 150 psalms on a regular basis. As time went on, it was felt that the lay brothers, known as the conversi, should have some form of prayer of their own.

They were distinct from the choir monks, and a chief distinction was that they were illiterate. Since they couldn’t read the psalms, they couldn’t recite them with the monks. They needed an easily remembered prayer.

The prayer first chosen was the Our Father, and, depending on circumstances, it was said either fifty or a hundred times. These conversi used rosaries to keep count, and the rosaries were known then as Paternosters ("Our Fathers").

The rosaries that originally were used to count Our Fathers came to be used, during the twelfth century, to count Hail Marys—or, more properly, the first half of what we now call the Hail Mary. (The second half was added some time later.) Both Catholics and non-Catholics, as they learn more about the rosary, and make more frequent use of it, come to see how its meditations bring to mind the sweet fragrance not only of the Mother of God, but of Christ himself. ☺

The Holy Rosary

The holy rosary the sorrowful mysteries the sorrowful mysteries help us to think of mary s great sorrow when jesus suffered for our salvation. – powerpoint ppt presentation.

  • The devotion of the Holy Rosary has been treasured in the Church for many centuries. It is a summary of Christian faith in language and prayers inspired by the Bible. The Rosary is one of the best prayers that families are invited to recite.
  • Saint Dominic
  • Our Lady of Lourdes
  • Our Lady of Fatima
  • The origin of this devotion is traditionally connected with St. Dominic who was in Spain in the thirteenth century. He founded the Order of Preachers, or Dominicans. He went to France as a missionary to convert some people.
  • One day the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Dominic, holding a Rosary in her hand. She told him that the devotion of the Rosary would convert sinners and obtain great graces from God. She said, This is the precious gift which I leave to you.
  • Saint Dominic taught the people how to say the Rosary. Soon, more than one hundred thousand people were converted.
  • In 1858 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared eighteen times to Saint Bernadette, a humble peasant girl, at Lourdes in France. She appeared in a rocky cave in a glow of brightest light. She wore a white robe and a blue sash, and on each of her feet there was a golden rose. A white Rosary with a cross of gold hung from her right arm.
  • The beautiful Lady said the Rosary with Bernadette. She asked her little friend to tell the people to do penance for their sins and to pray. One day Bernadette asked, My lady, would you be so kind as to tell me who your are?
  • The Lady joined her hands and looking up to heaven, said, I am the Immaculate Conception.
  • On May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin appeared to three little shepherd children at Fatima, in Portugal. Their names were Lucy, Jacinta, and Francisco. The beautiful Lady was dressed in white, and she stood on a bright cloud over a small oak tree. From her right hand hung a white Rosary. She said to the children Have no fear. I come from heaven. I want you children to come here on the thirteenth day of each month, until October. Then I will tell you who I am.
  • On October 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary again appeared to the children of Fatima. She said I am the Lady of the Rosary. I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. People must not continue to offend our Lord, already so deeply offended. They must say the Rosary.
  • The Sign of the Cross
  • The Apostles Creed
  • The Our Father
  • The Hail Mary
  • The Glory Be to the Father
  • The Hail, Holy Queen
  • As we recite the prayers of the rosary, we think about certain stories in the lives of Jesus and Mary.
  • There are four sets of five mysteries, or stories, for us to think about while we pray the rosary. The stories tell of certain events in the lives of Jesus and Mary.
  • The Joyful Mysteries help us to think of Marys joy when Jesus came into the world. They are
  • The Annunciation
  • The Visitation
  • The Birth of the Child Jesus
  • The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
  • Finding of Jesus in the Temple
  • Usually said on Mondays and Saturdays except during Lent and the Sundays from Advent to Lent.
  • The Luminous Mysteries or the Mysteries of
  • Light help us to think of Marys joy, as the
  • first among believers, when Jesus began to
  • proclaim the Good News of salvation for all
  • who followed Him. They are
  • The Baptism of Jesus
  • Christs Self-Manifestation at Cana
  • Christs Proclamation of the Kingdom of God
  • The Transfiguration of Our Lord
  • Christs Institution of the Eucharist
  • Usually said on Thursdays, except during Lent.
  • The Sorrowful Mysteries help us to think of Marys great sorrow when Jesus suffered for our salvation. They are
  • The Agony of Jesus in the Garden
  • The Scourging of Jesus at the Pillar
  • The Crowning of Jesus with Thorns
  • Jesus Carries His Heavy Cross
  • The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus
  • Usually said on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the year and every day from Ash Wednesday until Easter.
  • The Glorious Mysteries help us to think of the glorious Resurrection of Jesus and the Crowning of Mary as Queen of Heaven. They are
  • The Resurrection of Jesus
  • The Ascension of Jesus into Heaven
  • The Descent of the Holy Spirit
  • Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • Usually said on Wednesdays (except during Lent) and the Sundays from Easter to Advent.
  • Hail, Holy Queen
  • Let us pray
  • O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life grant, we ask You, that, meditating upon these Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Rosary. The Rosary is a very ancient Catholic prayer. St. Dominic, who was born in 1170 encouraged all his monks to learn the Rosary, and even before his time, there are records of ‘Aves’ (Hail Marys) being prayed with beads in honour of Our Lady.

Children’s Eucharistic Revival Holy Hour: LIVE From Mother Angelica’s Hanceville Shrine on Feast of Our Lady of Fatima

The worldwide prayer event will gather young people in prayer across 160 countries around the globe on May 13.

Children adore Christ during a Holy Hour in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

Imagine a million children and youth praying the Rosary during a Holy Hour on the same day during the Eucharistic Revival.

It can be done because Eternal Word Television Network will broadcast the Worldwide Children’s Eucharistic Holy Hour to more than 160 countries around the globe from the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama. Children and youth everywhere will be able to join their peers gathered at the shrine for the blessed hour on May 13.

In a short video message , Bishop Andrew Cozzens of the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, chairman of the National Eucharistic Congress, links this event to the national Eucharistic Revival: “I’m inviting pastors, teachers, DREs and parents to request prayers from our children and youth for the following events. First, May 13, 2024, the 22nd-annual worldwide Children’s Eucharistic Holy Hour in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and July 17 to 21, the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, Indiana, inviting the entire world to spiritually unite in prayer for its success. In May, the children throughout the world will have been united in prayer for some time for the ongoing success of the worldwide Children’s Eucharistic Holy Hour and the National Eucharistic Congress, bringing the love of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist to the next generation.”

Father Joseph Mary Wolfe of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, who will lead the Children’s Holy Hour on EWTN, likewise connected it to the Eucharistic Revival. “This Children’s Eucharistic Holy Hour will be broadcast for the first time from the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville with the children from Sacred Heart Catholic School,” he told the Register. “The shrine is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. I believe Mother Angelica began a Eucharistic revival when she built this beautiful proclamation of the Real Presence. In fact, one of the Eucharistic Pilgrimages will be passing through the shrine, so it is fitting to have the children lead us in prayer.”

The St. Juan Diego Route of the pilgrimage will stop at the shrine on June 20 .

Father Wolfe said of the importance of including children in prayer, “The statue of Divino Niño in the piazza [at the Hanceville shrine] has a quote from Isaiah 11:6 ‘And a little Child shall lead them.’”

Connie Schneider, president of the Children of the Eucharist, Young Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary ( ChildrenoftheEucharist ) that founded and sponsors this Holy Hour, agreed, telling the Register that “the Child Jesus desires this. Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these’ (Matthew 19:14).”

Children adore Christ together

And the May 13 timing is providential.

“It will be the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, and many of the prayers are related to that apparition and to St. Francisco and St. Jacinta,” Father Wolfe explained. “Children, too, are called to be saints, and witnessing other children praying at the shrine will encourage them to love Jesus and Mary, too. St. Francisco spoke of loving the ‘Hidden Jesus’ in the Blessed Sacrament and St. Jacinta of offering to God all that is difficult in life. Those are such important messages for us today, young and old.”

Even before Our Lady appeared to the children at Fatima, she sent her Angel of Peace, who asked the three children to make reparation to our Eucharistic Lord. He held a chalice with the Host suspended above it, from which drops of Blood fell into the chalice. Leaving the chalice and the Host suspended in the air, he prostrated himself on the ground beside the children and made them repeat this prayer three times: “Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences with which He, Himself is offended. And through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg you for the conversion of poor sinners.”

The children explained later that, on May 13, the Blessed Mother appeared and was bathed in a light so brilliant and intense that its rays penetrated their hearts and they saw themselves “in God; we were moved by an interior impulse and fell to our knees, repeating: ‘O most Holy Trinity, I adore You! My God, my God, I love you in the Most Blessed Sacrament.’" In this same first apparition, Our Lady told them, “'Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.’”

This Worldwide Children's Eucharistic Holy Hour carries out the lessons of Our Lady’s first appearance at Fatima and will do so on the feast day itself during the Holy Hour.

Schneider shared some appropriate words St. John Paul II wrote to the young in his 1994 “Christmas Letter to the World’s Children.” He wrote: “Just as Jesus in the Gospel shows special trust in children, so his Mother Mary, in the course of history, has not failed to show her motherly care for the little ones. … It is absolutely true: Jesus and his Mother often choose children and give them important tasks for the life of the Church and of humanity. … The Redeemer of humanity seems to share with them his concern for others: for parents, for other boys and girls. He eagerly awaits their prayers. What enormous power the prayer of children has! This becomes a model for grown-ups themselves: praying with simple and complete trust means praying as children pray.”

Father Wolfe shared about how much Our Lady wants children to grow in faith. “I interviewed the postulator for the causes of St. Francisco and St. Jacinta, Sister Ângela de Fátima Coelho , and I asked her why the children were able to grow in heroic virtue at such a young age. She responded that Mary brought them quickly there. That is a beautiful, consoling truth for all of us. Notice how that began at that first apparition, something that this Children’s Holy Hour will be bringing together with Eucharistic adoration and the Rosary.”

Schneider emphasized that the Eucharistic Revival is also for the children of the world: “Bishop Cozzens recognized this and opened his heart to bring our Catholic-school children and all children to pray for the success of the Eucharistic Revival. If we have no Eucharist, we have no Catholic faith.”

Children pray the Rosary in Mary’s Shrine

Our Lady of Fatima is calling the children of the world to Eucharistic adoration and the Rosary, said Schneider, referencing, “Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:4).

In addition to taking part in the Holy Hour from EWTN, Schneider hopes that “pastors, teachers and parents could gather our students and children to visit Jesus before the Blessed Sacrament for a few minutes to pray the prayers of Eucharistic reparation. At Fatima, the Angel told the children that their prayers and sacrifices would bring peace to their country.”

Referring to the upcoming EWTN broadcast on May 13, Schneider concluded, “Imagine a children’s Eucharistic revival! It can happen if we unite.”

JOIN IN PRAYER

The Holy Hour will be broadcast on EWTN , Monday, May 13, at 10 a.m. Eastern. Note: This year, another Holy Hour will be held again in October (day and time to be determined).

First Catholic college in South Carolina to open in fall 2024

Rosary College log

By Kate Quiñones

CNA Staff, May 10, 2024 / 06:00 am

Author and Anglican convert Father Dwight Longenecker along with a number of Catholic scholars are launching the first Catholic college in South Carolina, a two-year liberal arts college set to open this fall.

Rosary College will offer an associate of Catholic studies in integrated humanities degree, which can be transferred to a number of other universities. The college offers “an affordable, transferable credit for students who are either going on to a four-year Catholic college or those who are going into the workforce and/or trade school,” Longenecker explained in a post on X .

“Our focus is with our foundation on truth, beauty, and goodness, and in alignment with our primary value of Catholic identity,” Mike Shick, founding president of lay-run Rosary College, told CNA in an interview. “We want to ensure that we’re in alignment with the magisterium of the holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.”

While 20% of Americans are Catholic nationwide, only 10% of South Carolinians are Catholic, according to Pew Research. South Carolina is predominantly Protestant (about 66%), while 19% of South Carolinians are unaffiliated “religious nones.”

Greenville, South Carolina, however,  has a “robust community” of Catholics, drawing people from all over the U.S., said Shick, who moved his family of 10 from Virginia to the city of 70,000 last year.

“While the percentage in the number of Catholics that are here [is low], many of the folks that are here now have come from various different areas around the United States, all because it’s, anecdotally, a fervent Catholic area,” Shick said.

Rosary College will take inspiration from the Benedictine tradition of prayer and work, Shick said, as they build the college “brick by brick.”

“We feel that calling to be able to support our students, be able to help them develop, through not only contemplation but … that they’re being able to evangelize through who they are, through their work,” Shick said. “Not through apologetics, but through being principled, having integrity, and [being] ordered toward truth, beauty, and goodness.”

The curriculum will include classes on Euclidean geometry, the foundations of science, and business while also offering various literature courses, Latin, philosophy, and Catholic theology.

“It helps our kids navigate those first two v[ery] tricky years of college successfully,” Longenecker explained in the post. “It consolidates the Catholic worldview necessary to keep the faith and succeed in life.”

To help students easily transfer their credits, Rosary College partnered with two Newman-guide recognized Catholic colleges: Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, Florida, and Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Rosary College also offers online classes through its program “Fiat.”

Renowned Catholic scholars Joseph Pearce, prolific author and host of an EWTN series about Shakespeare, and Jared Staudt, former dean of the St. Augustine Institute, are members of the board of trustees for Rosary College.

Tuition will be $450 per credit hour, with an estimated full-time student tuition of $7,150 per semester. For a non-student auditing a course, the cost will be $675 per course. For its first years, Rosary College will operate out of rented classrooms.

“We are much closer in alignment with the cost for tuition at local community college, secular community college,” Shick noted. “It’s not a one for one, but we’re a lot closer to that. And so from a price-point perspective, we are certainly well positioned for those families with a larger number of children and things of that nature. I got to tell you, as a father of eight, I certainly can appreciate that.”

But while their tuition cost is similar to community college tuition, Shick pointed out that “nearly all” of the faculty hold doctorate degrees.

“I’m just thrilled to be a part of… I wouldn’t call it a renewal, but setting a foundation to ensure that we are in alignment with the magisterium, that we can provide that authentic education that people are so much looking for, that’s rigorous and affordable,” Shick added. “I’m thrilled to be a part of it, and I’m really looking forward to the offerings and the things to come.”

Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday.
