Remember that you are responsible for scheduling your thesis defense in the semester in which you plan to file. Work with the graduate assistant to find a room once you and your committee have settled on a time. Allow two hours for the defense.
Writing the MA Thesis in Linguistics
An MA thesis represents an original investigation into a problem or a research project that contributes new knowledge to the field. A thesis is not required in our MA program. You should undertake an MA thesis if some idea or observation intrigues you so much that you want to pursue it in depth, and you wish to have the experience of organizing and executing your own research project. Beyond this, some students may be motivated to write the MA thesis in order to produce a writing sample for PhD applications or because the MA degree may carry more weight professionally if associated with a thesis. Note that students who elect to write a thesis may count the oral thesis-defense as the concluding exam for the program in place of the written comprehensive exam taken by non-thesis-writers.
- Select a topic, enlisting the help of an advisor or advisors (official or not). This is very important. Most students will try to tackle a project that is much too big for the time and resources available. So you will need faculty help in refining your research question(s) and your methodology into something that can be managed for this project. You should do this no later than the middle of your second semester in the program ; the earlier, the better.
- At the same time, you will select an official advisor. Faculty are not obliged to take on thesis projects, so listen to the feedback you receive from faculty and be prepared to ‘sell’ your idea to your chosen mentor. Eventually you will need to recruit a committee of three faculty members (including your advisor, two of whom must be from the Linguistics department), but many thesis projects get most of their input from a single advisor. Unlike a PhD thesis committee, an MA committee need not contain an external member (a CU faculty member from outside LING) . You are welcome to invite an external member to serve as the third member of your thesis committee, but faculty members from institutions outside CU are not permitted to serve on MA thesis committees. You must have your committee in place by early March (or late October for fall graduation) of your last semester in the program. Notify the Linguistics program assistant of your committee’s composition to be recorded in your file.
- Start early and observe the work schedule religiously. Scrambling to get everything done in the last two weeks of the semester is neither fun nor good scholarly methodology, and it does not endear you to your faculty committee.
There are strict Graduate School procedures and deadlines governing the preparation and submission of the thesis. Be sure to follow them . The Schedule
Work backwards. If you plan to graduate with a completed thesis in May of 20xx, you must file your completed thesis by mid-April of 20xx (exact date set by the Graduate School each Academic Year). Before your thesis is filed, it must be researched, written, read by the committee, defended, revised, and re-read by the committee, and the defense and revision always happen at a time of the semester when both you and the faculty are extremely busy. You must allow enough time between the defense exam and the filing date to make required revisions and allow the faculty readers sufficient time to evaluate the document carefully. Be aware that if you do not allow at least two weeks between your defense date and the thesis filing date, you will probably postpone the awarding of your diploma until the following graduation date (at least).
So for a spring graduation , your backwards schedule might look like this (the dates for a particular year will vary):
- late-April : File the thesis with the Graduate School by the thesis filing deadline, ensuring that you have conformed to the thesis specifications.
- early-April : Submit the final version of your thesis, incorporating revisions required by your thesis committee, to your thesis committee. Make sure to do this well ahead of the thesis filing deadline. While they read it, make sure all Graduate School procedures are understood and being followed.
- mid- to late-March (ideally before spring break) : Take the thesis defense exam. You must work with your committee and the program assistant in Linguistics to fix the time and room for your thesis defense. Allow two hours for the defense . Be sure to check with your thesis advisor about the appropriate format for the defense (e.g., how long your presentation should be, how many minutes to set aside for questions).
- early March, depending on defense arrangements : Submit the completed thesis to your committee (at least two weeks before the defense date). Make certain that the exam report form, containing the names of your thesis committee members (and which your committee will sign once you have taken the exam), has been sent to the Graduate School at least two weeks in advance of the defense date.
- March 1 or earlier : Submit the final draft of your thesis to your advisor. The advisor needs time to read this draft before giving you clearance to circulate it to the rest of the committee. Expect to do some revising between now and the date when you will give the document to the whole committee.
- February or earlier : Make certain that all three of your desired committee members are willing to serve. Ensure that you have notified the Linguistics program assistant of your committee’s composition.
- February 1, graduation year : File the Application for Candidacy form with the Graduate School (see below).
- April 1, first year (second semester in program) : Submit a thesis proposal (2 pages) that outlines your topic and methods to your advisor and one additional committee member. Notify the Linguistics program assistant of your advisor to be recorded in your digital file. To be safe, double-check during advising to make sure that this information is in your official Record of Progress. You now have nearly a year in which to do the project and write the thesis.
- December, first year (end of first semester in program) : Express "soft intent" to do a thesis. This means that you have discussed the thesis possibility with at least one interested faculty member and the Grad Advisor. At this point, you are not yet obligated to write a thesis; however, you are encouraged to take the Research in Linguistics course in Spring to further explore your interests.
Additional Regulations
- Credit hours : You must take (i.e., pay for) at least four, and may take up to six, credits of the course listed as MA Thesis in order to graduate under the thesis plan. You can register for those hours at any time that is convenient (financially most advantageous) for you and your advisor; the timing of the credits does not have to be the same as the timing of your work on the thesis. You may take all the credits in one semester if you wish. Those 4-6 credit hours substitute for course credits and contribute to the 30 total hours you need to graduate.
Master's Thesis Plan Form : Students completing a written thesis must now submit a Master’s Thesis Plan Form contained in this link: https://www.colorado.edu/graduateschool/content/masters-thesis-plan-form This form should be submitted as early as possible in the graduate career and at the latest it should be submitted by the deadline to graduate posted for the semester in which the student plans to graduate.
Candidacy application : The Candidacy Application is a form required by the Graduate School before you can take your final exam (which, for thesis writers, is the thesis defense). It is due very near the beginning of the semester in which you expect to take the exam. The candidacy form must be completed before the thesis defense and approved by the Graduate School at that time.
- Comprehensive exam : Starting July 2024, students will have the option to either write an MA thesis or take the comprehensive exam in order to complete the MA degree requirements. Students who pass the thesis defense are not required to take the written comprehensive exam.

Master’s thesis guidelines.

A master’s student with a thesis requirement will submit the file through Brown's electronic theses and dissertation (ETD) system . The system is designed to collect and archive the thesis or dissertation as a text-based PDF file. An electronic file submitted through the ETD will appear in the Library's discovery service and in the Brown digital repository .
Web Searches and Unrestricted Downloads
In the spirit of the dissemination of new knowledge that is a hallmark of higher education, a thesis or dissertation will be subject to web searches and unrestricted downloads unless the student requests to opt out of the system and have the thesis or dissertation unavailable for download outside of the Brown community. A request to restrict download access to a thesis or dissertation has an initial two-year window from the time of degree conferral. Guidelines associated with restricted dissertation access are:
- The full text version will be available for download only to members of the Brown community.
- Web searches including the citation and abstract of restricted theses or dissertations will continue to be available to the general public.
- After two years the restriction will elapse.
- Restrictions on full text download may be renewed for two-year periods up to a total of ten years from the date of degree conferral. Requests for additional two-year restrictions should be made to the Graduate School.
- Any requests to extend the restriction beyond ten years must go to the Graduate Council for approval.
- In cases where the thesis or dissertation is a co-worked piece and there is disagreement between the student and the advisor over whether the material will or will not be available for download outside of the Brown community, the dispute will be brought before the Graduate Council for resolution.
To use the ETD system, the student must possess a valid username and password for accessing Brown’s computer network. If you are unable to create an account in the system, please contact [email protected] for assistance.
Graduate students are eligible to have degrees conferred, and to receive their diploma, at three different times over the course of the academic year.
For students who complete their degree requirements the preceding summer term. The Application to Graduate opens on July 1, 2024 and closes on September 6, 2024. Degrees are conferred on October 20, 2024.
For students who complete their requirements the preceding fall term. The Application to Graduate opens on October 1, 2024 and closes on January 10, 2025. Degrees are conferred on February 9, 2025.
For students who complete their requirements over the preceding spring term. The dissertation deadline is May 1, 2024. Please note, the Application to Graduate deadline is April 19, 2024.
The master's thesis and all of the associated forms and documents related to the completion of the degree must be submitted to the Graduate School by the deadlines listed above.
Registration
If a student registers for Semester I and completes all of the requirements for the degree during that semester, a fee for Semester II will not be charged.

The Signature Page
As part of the overall completion process, the student must separately submit one signature page, which may be sent electronically to [email protected] . The signature page should bear the signature of the director (not the graduate representative or chairperson). The typed name of the director should appear under the signature line. Electronic signatures are acceptable. An unsigned copy of the signature page should be uploaded to the ETD system .

Every effort should be made to have the manuscript as perfect as possible in form and appearance. Pages containing handwritten corrections, typewritten strikeovers and unsightly erasures and the like will not be accepted. Good references for editorial details are the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Modern Language Association), Kate Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations (University of Chicago Press), and The Chicago Manual of Style (University of Chicago Press). The department should also be consulted regarding its policies or preferences in matters of format and style.
If publication of the thesis is anticipated, the medium of publication likely to be used should be considered when preparing the manuscript. If it is known in advance that the thesis will be published by a particular publisher or journal, the editorial practices of that publisher or journal should be followed. The form of footnotes and bibliography, in particular, may vary with different publishers and journals.
Type and Spacing Standard
Typefaces set to print at 10-, 11-, or 12-point font are acceptable. Typing or printing should be double-spaced, except for footnotes (single-space footnotes, with double spacing to separate one note from the next).
Page Numbers
Be consistent. Either put all page numbers (both Roman and Arabic) at the top of the page, or put all page numbers (both Roman and Arabic) at the bottom of the page.
Most theses consist of preliminary pages which are numbered using Roman numerals, and the thesis proper, which is numbered using Arabic numerals.
The preliminary pages must appear in the following order:
- Title page (do not number)
- Signature page (ii)
- Vita* (iii)
- Preface and acknowledgments (iv)
- Table of contents (v)
- List of tables vi List of illustrations (vii)
Should any element of the preliminary pages be longer than one page, number the pages consecutively. The preliminary pages should appear in this order but not necessarily with the page numbers shown above.
The thesis proper (including introduction, main body of the text, illustrations, appendices, and bibliography) is numbered using Arabic numerals. The numbering begins with 1 and runs consecutively to the end.
* The vita is an optional statement giving a short biography of the candidate, including institutions attended, degrees and honors, titles of publications, teaching or professional experience, and other pertinent information. Do not include date or location of birth or phone numbers.
Dating the Thesis
Because degrees are conferred three times a year, the title page should include the date that the degree is conferred.
The Abstract
If it is appropriate for the thesis to be accompanied by an abstract, it should, in a concise manner, present the problem of the dissertation, discuss the materials and procedure or methods used, and state the results or conclusions. Mathematical formulas, diagrams, and other illustrative materials should be avoided. The abstract should not be part of the thesis itself nor should it be included in the table of contents. It should be headed as follows:
Abstract of (TITLE OF THESIS), by (AUTHOR'S NAME), Degree [A.M., or ScM.], Brown University, May (YEAR IN WHICH DEGREE IS TO BE AWARDED).
The abstract should be prepared carefully since it will be published without editing or revision. The abstract should be double-spaced and may not exceed 350 words (maximum 2,450 characters — including spaces and punctuation — about 70 characters per line with a maximum of 35 lines).
Submission of Final Thesis
When the thesis is submitted electronically to the Graduate School, it must be in final form. It may not be revised in any way after it is presented. See the list of required items below and note that some, where noted, may be sent electronically to the Graduate School’s Academic Affairs Manager, Barbara Bennett. The thesis will not be accepted and the student’s degree will not be conferred if any item from this list is missing or incomplete. The online submission system will send notifications when each document has been received and approved by the Graduate School.
- One copy of the title page, which may be sent electronically.
- One signed signature page, which may be sent electronically to to [email protected] .

Publishing the Master's Thesis
It is University policy that all research done at the University under its sponsorship must be freely published without restriction. Since 1954, the Graduate School has required that dissertations be published. In 1985, the Graduate Council reaffirmed that decision and approved the following policy:
"All Ph.D. dissertations and Master's theses will be open documents. The Graduate Council will not recommend the awarding of the Ph.D. or Master's degree until the dissertation or thesis is submitted to the Graduate School and accorded unlimited distribution status."
Exceptions to this requirement will be made only if there is a letter from a publisher stating that the dissertation will be published within one year after the degree is awarded and that requests that circulation of the dissertation be withheld for twelve months after the degree is conferred. Six months will be allowed for the clearing of a patent.

The Diploma
The Office of the Registrar's Application to Graduate provides the degree candidate with an opportunity to indicate how the diploma name should appear. Otherwise, the name that will appear on the diploma and in the Commencement program, and under which the Library will catalog the dissertation, is the name under which the candidate is officially registered. Any request for a change of registered name should be addressed to the Office of the Registrar and accompanied by supporting legal documentation, such as a court order, marriage license, passport, driver’s license, or social security card.
Certificate of Completion
If all academic requirements for the degree and all financial obligations have been met before May 1, the Office of the Registrar will issue a certificate of completion within three weeks of the candidate's request.

Signum University
M.a. in language and literature.
The M.A. in Language and Literature is an academically rigorous degree program at the graduate level.
Signum University’s M.A. in Language and Literature focuses on close, critical readings of classical and contemporary texts in their historical and conceptual contexts.
Program Goals
The Master’s Degree in Language and Literature is designed with the following objectives in mind:
- To equip our students to rediscover languages in their literary contexts by pursuing language acquisition for scholarly research.
- To develop in our students the ability to enjoy, research, and discuss literary texts in a meaningful way, bringing depth and creativity to ongoing academic conversations.
- To encourage our students to connect with other scholars and creatives in their specific fields of interest.
- To guide our students through the process of creating and presenting a quality capstone project.
These goals have informed the following four expected Program Outcomes for students who successfully complete the Master’s Degree in Language and Literature:
Graduates will be able to understand and interpret texts in at least one historical language through acquired language skills or philological methods.
Textual Analysis
Graduates will be able to use independent research and analytical readings of primary and secondary sources to develop oral and written evidence-based arguments about literary texts and their origins, contexts, or long-term influence.
Graduates will be able to contribute to academic conversations in which they evaluate and support the ideas of others in meaningful, constructive ways.
Graduates will be able to compose and defend substantial scholarly works, including a thesis, that demonstrate independent research and textual analysis and contribute to further discourse in their areas of interest.
M.A. Degree Requirements
The M.A. in Language and Literature requires a total of 36 credit hours. These credits are divided as follows:
- 3 credit hours LITZ 5302 Foundations in Critical Reading and Research
- 6 credit hours dedicated to any of Signum’s language courses*
- 6 credit hours dedicated to any of Signum’s literature courses*
- 12 credit hours dedicated to a combination of Signum’s language or literature courses

*Some classes may be eligible for either literature or language credit. For special circumstances, speak with your advisor or contact the University .
The University offers a flexible timeframe to complete these requirements: Students are granted a minimum of two (2) years and a maximum of eight (8) years to finish their degree program. During that time, students are welcome to take most courses at the pace that best suits them.
These degree requirements effective 1 August 2022.
Core Courses
LITZ 5302 Foundations in Critical Reading and Research
Beginning in the Fall 2022 term, all credit students are required to take LITZ 5302 Foundations in Critical Reading and Research. This course must be completed within the first two (2) calendar years of the M.A. program. Students admitted before Fall 2022 are encouraged but not required to take this course.
Concentrations
Students admitted to the M.A. program or the graduate diploma program may choose one of four concentrations :
- Tolkien Studies
- Imaginative Literature
- Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance Literature
- Germanic Philology
One course for each concentration is offered every term. However, it is not required that students choose a concentration in order to complete the Graduate Diploma (or the MA degree).
Students choosing to pursue a concentration must take at least five (5) courses from that concentration for the M.A. degree or four (4) courses for the graduate diploma.
At least one language course is offered in every term.
Capstone Project
All students seeking a M.A. Degree in Language and Literature are required to complete a capstone project, often referred to as the thesis.
In its final form, your thesis should be suitable for publication in a scholarly journal and/or presentation at an academic conference. While it might originate from an idea you explored in a previous course project, the final thesis will be the result of new research, substantive revision, and significant expansion.
The capstone project is divided into three semesters. These courses are taken after the student has successfully completed the required number of credits and the thesis application has been accepted by the Thesis Director .

- LITZ6391 Thesis Development
- LITZ6392 Thesis Revision and Presentation
This three-credit sequence is optional for students who have passed their seventh course toward their M.A. before the beginning of the Fall 2022 term, who may elect the prior two-credit sequence. If a student who meets this criterion elects to take the two-credit sequence, they must enroll in the first semester by Fall 2024 and complete the sequence by Summer 2025. The three-credit sequence is mandatory for all other students.

M.A. Advisory Council
The Advisory Council for the M.A. in Language and Literature program at Signum University was formed in 2020. Our Advisory Committee has three members whose areas of expertise were chosen to align closely with our program and its mission.
Our Advisory Council meets once per year as part of our annual program review process. Their feedback is solicited every term as part of our semester-long course review process.
Dr. Holly Ordway, Fellow at the Word on Fire Institute, Visiting Professor, Houston Baptist University
Holly Ordway is a celebrated writer on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. She received her PhD in English from the University of Massachusetts in 2001, and she has been a literature professor for fifteen years. For the last nine years, she has been a Professor of English at Houston Baptist University, and served as Department Chair for the first three of those years.
Dr Adam Oberlin, Senior Lecturer, Princeton University
Adam Oberlin received his PhD in Germanic Medieval Studies from the University of Minnesota in 2012 and has taught Germanic languages, literatures, history, culture, and world geography to students ranging from middle school grades to retirement in a variety of schools, universities, and adult educational institutes. His research and teaching interests include historical and corpus linguistics, digital approaches to textual analysis, and content-based instruction.
