All my school friends have chosen something as their hobby while promoted to high school from the primary standard. I also chose book reading as my hobby. I love to read different kinds of books since my early childhood. I still remember that my mother used to tell me stories at night when I was a child.

Probably my passion for reading storybooks got developed from that time. I prefer reading detective as well as ghost stories. One of my teachers has asked me to read travel stories by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. I have read the book Chander Pahar written by him. The character Shankar from the novel Chander Pahar has become very close to my heart.

My Hobby Reading Book

Everybody in their life pursues something as a hobby. A hobby is something that any person is passionate about. People spend their leisure time pursuing a hobby. Like other people, I have chosen reading books as my hobby. This hobby of mine is not about reading regular academic books. Rather I love to read books on different topics and incidents happening all around the world.

Especially, I love to read books on real travel stories as well as adventures. My habit of reading books developed since I was a child. We had no television or mobile phone in our house but a lot of books. I used to read from them whatever I wanted to. Most of those I hardly understood. I still remember those days when my father used to buy me monthly child magazines like Anandamela and Suktara.

I still love reading comics from those magazines. My favorite comics are Tintin, Chacha Chowdhury as well as Nonte-Fonte. I have recently read a book named Aranyak written by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. It is all about the life experience of the author in a remote rural location of India. In this book, the description of nature is so vivid that any passionate reader will get lost in an amazing experience. All my teachers as well as my parents appreciate this hobby.

A hobby is something that a person pursues to take a break from the same monotonous regular routine. That’s why everyone chooses something as a hobby that they love. Because as wise men say that love can be the ultimate motivation to do something.

So, we all need to choose something as our hobby that we are passionate about. Without passion, all our efforts to do something creative go into the vein. Our hobbies necessarily can enrich us both physically and mentally. That’s why my father says that hobbies are needed to be chosen wisely and very carefully for proper utilization of both time and effort.

Hobbies can be of many different types. Many of my classmates have chosen singing, gardening, painting as their hobbies. My best friend Piyush chose stamps collection as his hobby. These all hobbies bring refreshment to them. Like my friends, I have also chosen reading books as my hobby. I enjoy my hobby the most.

I love to read about everything no matter what topic it is. Since my early childhood, I developed a passion for reading. My parents used to gift me so many books since then. Every year, I go to the Kolkata International Book Fair with my parents. Moreover, After getting promoted to high school from primary, I got exclusive student access to my school library.

Nowadays, I borrow more books from the library than buying them. Not only the school library but my father has also helped me to get a membership of the district library Khardah.

I love reading all kinds of books. But especially I am passionate about reading historical fiction. For this reason, Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay is one of my most favorite writers. Besides these, I also love to read adventure fiction as well as mythologies.

Essay on My Hobby Reading Book within 500 Words

What is a hobby? What a person should choose as a hobby? Before going deep into the discussion of my hobby, let’s talk about the hobby itself. A hobby is something that people do especially in their leisure time mostly for enjoyment. We do not expect to get paid for our hobbies.

These are some habits that come from inside us due to our natural internal tendency as well as passion. Hobbies include a wide range of activities. It can be collecting something like coins or stamps or leaves, fine arts activities like painting, dancing,  Creative works like gardening, writing poetry, etc. Or it can simply be reading books, like what I have chosen as my hobby of life.

At the very beginning, I want to say that I literally admire my hobby, and one of my playschool teachers inspired me to fall in love with reading books when I was at my very early age. I still remember she used to bring me many kinds of colorful interesting books full of amazing stories as well as pictures.

At that age, I fond of those kinds of books. Later on, I came to know that those books are known as comics. I have read so many comics since my early childhood. Tintin, Phantom, Dennis the Menace, Hada Bhoda, Nonte-Phonte is a few among them. My parents always appreciate my hobby of reading books. For me, reading any book is the way of my utmost relaxation.

When I get tremendously bored of my regular monotonous life, at that point my storybooks help me to travel in some dream location being a part of some exciting adventure of imagination. After going to high school, I got exclusive access to my school’s students’ library and a different world opened there for me. From then, I borrow books so many kinds of books from my school library and read them thoroughly.

Here, I would like to mention my school librarian sir Mr. Paresh Pathak who helps me to choose the proper book according to my age and reading tendency. From my school library, I have read many works of great authors like Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Satyajit Ray, and many more.

Recently, I have developed a special interest in magic realism. Very recently, I was reading a work of the great Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The name of the book is very famous One Hundred Years of Solitude. It is an amazing work that led me to a different fantasy world along with the dark humorous touch of eternal truth.

I’ve also read some works of Franz Kafka. His famous work The Metamorphosis will be very close to my heart always. For these also all credit goes my school librarian sir. He first suggested me to read something unconventional out of the box.

I got the first book of Gabriel Garcia Marquez from him. Moreover, I learned about magic realism from him as well. I believe that no matter what happens with human beings, but books, stories, and realization are eternal. They will never abandon me in my entire life.

That was all about essay writing on my hobby reading books. Here in the session, I have tried to write some essays on the very topic following every method and all possible perspectives. Moreover, I have also tried to write them for students of different classes. Besides, I maintained the word limit relevant for various examinations.

Hope you found this session helpful as per your requirement. Let us know your valuable opinion as well as suggestions for this session in the comment section below. Thank you; see you again very soon.

My hobby is reading books. Reading a book is one of my favorite pass times and since I work with words for a living it is also one of my favorite work tasks. There are no words that can describe my admiration and respect for the written word and the modest book that houses them. Even though great thinker of antiquity like Socrates despised the written word calling it unresponsive and dead we have to give out thanks to its ability to conserve knowledge for generations.

My hobby reading books is the best way to escape from the torment of the world and to rest in a world of imagination. Undisturbed by the troubles of my life, my mind can rest from all the stress it goes through every day and find comfort in the words of wise writers or happiness in those that like more light-hearted topics.

Not only do I read books but I also collect them and spend endless hours searching for the right edition for their collection. I even save up money so that I can buy books and extend my library or spend fortunes on rare historic manuscripts.

The fact of the matter is that there is no better way for me to rest and at the same time practice my brain by reading a book, so as far as my hobby reading books goes this way, it is the best pass time I can have. Believe me, once you start exploring the sea of stories written on paper you will never want to stop exploring.

Hobby is something that is of our interest and keeps us engaged in our free time with a free mind. A good habit will not only help us to escape from our daily cores but also keeps us peaceful. Studies prove that practicing a good hobby will keep us away from many mind related problems and loneliness as well.

Reading books as My Hobby:

Hobby is something that develops with us from an early age. I find happiness in reading books in my lonely time to free my mind of stress and study pressures. My hobby is reading books. Reading books is the best knowledge gaining hobby. My hobby reading books has helped me to improve my language too. When I start reading, I create my own imaginary and creative world to travel with the story.

Reading thriller novels will help me to travel to that world with mystery and stories with adventures will improve my creative side, as I am constantly imagining the scenario that’s happening in the story and so on. Thus my hobby reading books interest me the most, has helped me to understand the language better, create noble and ideal thoughts in me and more.

Inspirational and instructive books have always inspired my growing mind to follow the better path to achieve my life goal. By reading books I can be updated on the present world. A person with understandability towards anything will be able to acquire their desired heights more easily and books are molding me to be one.

Living amidst books makes me feel happier and loneliness has never touched me at any point in my life. Books have become my best friend since childhood and I can feel the positive changes they create in me.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

We have all heard of this adage time and again and it also throws light on how important it truly is to make sure that we all have a hobby.

The game of cricket:

Well, my hobby is cricket as I have been enjoying this sport since a very tender age. I remember gazing from the winnow of my room and watching the grown-ups immerse themselves in a game of cricket. I would spend hours watching them and remembering the different shots, the way the bowlers threw the ball at different angles and even imagined myself excelling at cricket.

The need for passion:

I believe that regardless of what we choose, it is important for each one of us to have a hobby. My hobby is something which keeps me going and it adds to my verve and energy. If you develop a good hobby, it will make sure that you would have something to unwind your mind.

When I go out to play cricket, in that moment, I do not think of anything else as I am cool, composed and nothing else matters. So, if you have not yet found your thing which you can truly call as a hobby, I suggest you do so.

I knew my hobby since a tender age and it soon grew into my passion and I can say with utmost pride that I am quite good at cricket. When you truly love something, your zest will give you the kick to excel in it too.

I have a lot of hobbies to pass my time. One of such things is drawing. Even when I was a little child, drawing has always made me happy. Sitting quietly in a place, I can draw for hours. It keeps me busy and relaxes my mind. There is a little secret to why I love drawing so much.

As a person, I am less talkative. Because of that, there are very few friends in my life. The thing is that, instead of speaking out everything, I prefer to express my emotions silently. And drawing just helps me do that.

Sketching is not merely a pass time to me. God has given me a beautiful way to share my thoughts and feelings through drawing. It is an art that becomes my voice when I wish to be quiet. Moreover, drawing also helps me connect more with nature. Trees, birds, animals, rivers, clouds are some of the favorite things that I like to draw.

My art teacher praises the passion I have for drawing. She also appreciates the blending of shades and strokes of brushes when I paint something. My parents and friends always encourage me for the same.

I wish to pursue drawing for the rest of my life. It is my dream to become a true artist one day and that is only possible with regular practice and devotion.

Introduction:

My hobby is dancing. Dancing is the art of performing purposefully selected sequence of movements by humans. Dance is a beautiful hobby that slowly builds in an individual. Dancing becomes a hobby to people who like to listen to music because as they listen, they tend to accompany the beats with dance moves. Although some people might be enjoying music but they are unable to dance because dancing is a performance that requires a skill that not everyone can master.

How it began:

Ever since I was a child, I have been chubby and so my parents had to sign me up for dancing lessons so that I can get physically fit. The dancing lessons seemed enjoyable but when I joined the first class I was unable to dance. I developed a strong determination to learn how to dance because by nature I do not like to accept failure. Within a few weeks, I had learned how to dance and it grew in me and dancing became my hobby. I would dance everywhere and that is how I grew fond of my hobby dancing.

Benefits of My Hobby Dancing:

Through my hobby dancing, I was able to lose weight and my chubbiness was gone. The regular dancing that I have been doing has kept me fit. Sometimes I make money from dancing especially during the holidays. Dancing at events or festivals earns me money. At school, I have won awards because I participate in dance as an extracurricular activity. It is a great feeling to have dancing as my hobby because it is what I love and enjoy.

Who are we without our hobbies? Apart from our physical appearances, the collection of the things we do is what makes us distinct from the next person. While there are things we do simply because we have to, we do others because we love to.

Hobbies are things we do because we have a natural inclination to do so. They give us so much pleasure that we would spend our life time doing it. This is why people try to build their respective professions around their hobbies. By so doing, an ordinarily difficult task suddenly becomes simple.

My love for sewing:

Though I have a lot of hobbies, my love for sewing stands out from the crowd. It all started when my mother bought a sewing machine when I was younger. I was immediately fascinated by the mechanical excellence of the equipment. First, it was the way the machine rolled. Then I was puzzled about the thread movement and how it miraculously turned torn pieces into masterpieces.

Subsequently, my curiosity became a source of entertainment. I would play around the machine and time would disappear while I do so. I would cut my old clothing and run it through the machine just to see it move. Slowly and surely, I became enchanted with sewing so much that it dominated my thought and became my hobby.

Now, I would not leave a single week without creating something adorable with the sewing machine. A few moments spent away from this intriguing environment feels like an eternity. What’s more, I have found that sewing has a therapeutic effect on me. It helps clear my thought and keeps me focused on a single task. Though there is financial gain in this endeavor I do it simply for the thrill.

Me and my hobby:

Sewing is my hobby and it is refreshing to me but over time I realized that by virtue of my love for this craft I became interested in related fields. First, I have to create a sketch of what to sew. This process is a purely creative one. As I draw, I can picture what I would do to the real fabric when I eventually get on the machine. I also visualize what the eventual dress would look like on me or whoever would eventually wear it.

Then, I cut pieces of the fabric as outlined in my drawings. The cutting stage is mainly about precision. The materials have to be systematically shaped in such a way that it fits the measurement taken. Any deviation from this would lead to undesired results.

Finally, the pieces are carefully held together by the automated needle of the machine. This is the most fulfilling part of the process. This is so because seeing the conceptualized idea come to bare serves as an icing on the cake. However, the feeling of excitement I experience after the cloth is made quickly evaporates. I am immediately left with the desire to start over again. Though the process might seem mechanical or even uninspiring to an onlooker, I wouldn’t trade my hobby of sewing for anything else in the world.

Any activity which one does for pleasure is called as a hobby. It can anything ranging from reading books, spending time with your pets, travelling around, talking to new people, just anything which gives immense pleasure to a person and relieves a person of the tensions of daily life. I too have a hobby which is quite common in the world as so many people do it.

Overall these years, I have the pleasure of reading the Harry Potter series, which still remain the best, The Shiva Trilogy from Amish Tripathi, books from good authors both from India and abroad.

We all participate in some kind of activity in line with our interests that we derive joy and happiness from; this activity is our hobby. We all have different hobbies based on our interests, dislikes and likes.

Types of Hobbies:

There are a lot of different types of hobbies that we can show interest in and develop, examples of hobbies are singing, dancing, playing outdoor or indoor games, drawing, collecting antiques, bird watching, writing, photography, reading, eating, playing, sports, music, gardening, cooking, watching TV, talking and any other activity you can think of. Our different hobbies that become a source of earning money and a means of livelihood and we can build a very successful career out of our hobbies. A hobby is meant to be enjoyed in our leisure time but it can become a lot more than that.

My Hobbies:

One popular misconception is that we can have only one hobby; this is totally not true. As a child growing up, I loved and enjoyed cooking and I would spend hours watching cooking programmes and watching my parents cook. Sooner rather than later, I also started trying out different recipes and dishes I had seen on TV and sometimes even tweaked a few things and made delicacies of my own. Cooking gave my childhood so much joy and bliss which made it one of my hobbies, I could cook all day and I get just happy at the thought of trying out a new recipe. Another hobby of mine is soccer which is kind of an accidental hobby (if there is anything like that). I had always loved watching football (or soccer) and was pretty good at analysis and understanding of the game but I never really tried playing the sport because of my first hobby that is cooking which meant I was more of the indoor person. Fate would have it that one of my close friends was on the varsity soccer team and all the goalkeepers got injured so he told me about an open audition for the position of goalkeeper and I just decided to try out. I was wonderful at the try outs and got a spot on the varsity soccer team, I became a pretty brilliant goalkeeper and I look forward to every opportunity to get on the field of play. There is this feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction I get anytime I am on the field of play. It is very possible to have more than one hobby so open yourself to the possibilities of all the different activities and interesting things around us.

My Favourite Hobby:

My favourite hobby is gardening. I spend most of my leisure time when I am not cooking or playing soccer in gardening. Gardening has been a huge source of knowledge, education, delight and entertainment to me. I have had the opportunity to learn a lot of new things on flowers, plants, vegetables, butterflies and even birds from gardening. My parents have a little plot of land where I pursue and practice this hobby. I have different varieties of vegetables, flowers and a few fruit trees in my garden. Some of the vegetables I grow are carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, radish, chillies, bitter gourd, etc. I also grow flowers like jasmine, roses, lilies, merry gold, carnation, poppies, flux and forget-me-not. These flowers make the garden a delight to behold and give the garden a soothing fragrance.

There are a few fruit-trees in the garden including banana, mango, guava and pomegranate. The garden is visited often by quite a number of birds and there are even some birds are live permanently on the fruit trees. The chirping sound made by the birds and their sweet music gives the garden the perfect condition and makes it the ideal place to be.

Gardening has also helped my other hobby (soccer) by keeping me mentally alert, physically fit and very fresh. The ambience of the garden is highly invigorating, fresh and soothing; there is calmness to the atmosphere of the garden. The processes and activities involved in gardening include weeding, digging, grafting, cutting, maturing, watering and the tilling of the soil. All of these activities get me the needed physical exercise I need to make my body fit and keep me sharp mentally.

A lot of family members and friends appreciate my hobby gardening. Over the years, I have been able to develop skills needed in gardening, sometimes; my father also helps me maintain the garden. I have a worthy and wonderful collection of magazines and books on vegetables, flowers, fruit trees and also gardening overall. It is quite a wonderful experience to watch plants grow, develop and blossom.

I am not full of knowledge in gardening; sometimes, I get advice and help from a professional gardener so as to know the right thing to do. I spend a large chunk of my money purchasing manure, seeds, fertilisers, books on gardening and gardening tools and implements. I try to catch all the programmes on television about gardening, I visit plant and flower shows and also fruit and vegetable exhibition. I try my possible best to balance all my hobbies, studies and other engagements without hurting any one of them for the others.

Gardening motivates me and gives me a sense of purpose about what I can achieve with my life. Once I am gardening, I forget about all of my worries, troubles and problems of the world. I am my happiest when I am working in the garden or when I get to give my friends and my family members fruits from the garden.

My Favourite Hobby

If I were to pick one favourite hobby of mine out of the many I have, I will definitely pick gardening. I developed a taste for dancing when I was very young. The way my feet moved to the rhythm of the music convinced my parents that I was a born dancer. Dancing is very uplifting as well as economical.

I have always had a love for music and dance. However, I never realized the utter joy they bring to humans. Dancing gives us a lot of exercises. It teaches us to move our body rhythmically and feel the beat of every song. This kind of physical exercise is extremely delightful and enjoyable.

Moreover, dance also taught me how to stay strong and push my limits. I have had many injuries while dancing, too many bruises and cuts but that didn’t stop me from pursuing it further. In fact, it pushes me to do my best and realize my potential more than ever.

I have enrolled in dancing classes because I wish to make my hobby my career. I feel we all should do things which we enjoy doing. Everyone is running after money and in this race, they give up their likings and preferences. I have learned from this race and decided to not take part in it. I wish to take the road less traveled by and take on challenges most people don’t dare to.

In short, my hobby of dancing makes me feel alive and well. It is the only thing I look forward the most to. Thus, I hope to achieve my dream of being a professional dancer and making way for people who wish to make careers out of their hobbies.

Long Essay on My Hobby 500 Words in English

Below we have given a long essay on My Hobby of 500 words is helpful for classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Competitive Exam Aspirants. This long essay on the topic is suitable for students of class 7 to class 10, and also for competitive exam aspirants.

My habit of reading started at an early age, when my mother or my grandmother would narrate me a story at bedtime. They would narrate me moral and other fairy stories. I would become very involved in these stories by asking different questions. I used to try to picturise the stories by adding my own elaborative version to it. As I grew, my eagerness and curiosity was only increasing, making me realise that there are many more towns to be built, many more scenes that needs a new shape of my imagination. That is how I fuelled this passion for reading even more.

In my readings, I have been a king who has won nations, I have been an angel helping the needy, I have wandered places in search of the treasure, and I have also shed tears being a forgotten beloved. Through my readings, I have travelled the farthest of the universe and have met zillions of aliens. Additionally, once I start to read the novel, I can’t stop reading it because it makes me wonder and want to know what would be the ending of it. When I read, I can exactly relate the author’s feelings, experience and his intention in delivering the message. I genuinely believe in Walt Disney when he says:

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on treasure island”.

I like reading books. But my reading is not limited to any particular genre. I like reading everything like Shakespeare, John Milton, Jane Austen, Mythological books, Rabindranath Tagore, and contemporary genre too like that of Chetan Bhagat, Paulo Coelho, Arundhati Roy etc. For that matter, I also like reading newspaper and magazines. “If a book is well written, I always find it too short”, exclaimed Jane Austen and such is the case with me.

Reading has endless number of advantages. By reading a good book, one cannot only earn knowledge but also gain experience in life, and realise the eternal truth. Reading broadens the horizon of thinking of a person, improves vocabulary and cultivates sensitivity towards people of different cultures. A good book can guide one in the right direction in his journey of life. In fact, it has been proved that the mind of a reader is more concentrated and focussed about various aspects of life.

When the mind is focussed, it has the capability to be more attentive in practical situations of life. As a result, the body and mind of such people remain calm; they look at the problem objectively and are better decision makers.

Additionally, reading improves memory as when one reads a book, he/she has to remember an assortment of characters, their backgrounds, ambitions, history, and nuances, as well as the various arcs and sub-plots. Reading, according to me is one habit that is without any drawbacks. In my opinion, everyone should cultivate the habit of reading, be it reading just anything.

And no movie can match up the charm of reading. All the characters looked better and justified in the book rather than in the movie based on it. I also believe that after reading so much I have a lot to narrate to the world. Well, who knows this hobby turned into passion can turn me into a writer someday, or may inspire me to open my own library someday.

Essay on My Hobby

Essay generator.

Hobbies play a pivotal role in shaping our personalities and offering us a respite from the monotony of daily routines. They provide an outlet for stress, an opportunity for learning new skills, and a way to explore our passions. In this essay, I will delve into the essence of having a hobby, my personal experience with my hobby, and the multitude of ways it benefits individuals, especially students.

A hobby is more than just a pastime; it is an activity that brings joy and enriches our lives. Engaging in hobbies offers a unique blend of personal satisfaction and creative expression. Whether it’s painting, reading, gardening, playing a musical instrument, or any other activity done for pleasure, hobbies have the power to transform our leisure time into moments of productivity and joy.

My Personal Journey with My Hobby

Among the many hobbies that people enjoy, mine is reading. Reading has always been a window to the world for me, allowing me to travel through time and space, understand different cultures, and gain insights into various aspects of life without leaving the comfort of my home. It began as a casual activity in my childhood, but soon, it burgeoned into a voracious passion for exploring the vast realms of fiction, history, science, and philosophy.

Why Reading is More Than Just a Hobby

Reading is an adventure of the mind. It challenges our perspectives, broadens our horizons, and enriches our understanding. Each book is a new journey, a dive into the depths of knowledge and imagination. Through reading, I have encountered myriad characters and ideas, each teaching me lessons about life, resilience, love, and the complexity of the human condition.

The Benefits of Reading as a Hobby

  • Improves Cognitive Functions : Reading enhances brain connectivity, improves vocabulary and comprehension, and boosts cognitive function. It’s an exercise for the brain, much like physical activity is for the body.
  • Enhances Knowledge : Every book offers new information, providing insights into different aspects of life, science, culture, and philosophy. This continuous learning process enriches one’s understanding and perspective.
  • Develops Critical Thinking Skills : Analyzing plots, understanding character development, and evaluating the themes of a book enhance critical thinking skills, which are invaluable in academic and professional settings.
  • Promotes Empathy : Reading about diverse characters and their struggles promotes empathy and understanding towards people from different backgrounds and with different life experiences.
  • A Stress Reliever : Immersing oneself in a good book can be a great stress reliever. It allows one to escape from the pressures of everyday life and lose oneself in another world.

Integrating Reading into Daily Life

Making reading a part of daily life doesn’t require monumental changes. It starts with setting aside a specific time for reading each day, choosing books that align with personal interests, and gradually expanding one’s reading list to include a variety of genres. Joining book clubs and participating in discussions can also enhance the reading experience, offering new perspectives and making the hobby even more engaging.

The Impact of Reading on My Life

Reading has profoundly impacted my life. It has been my constant companion through various phases, offering comfort during difficult times and adding joy to my happiest days. It has shaped my personality, my values, and my aspirations. Moreover, it has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to excel academically and professionally.

Encouraging Others to Read

Encouraging others to take up reading as a hobby is about sharing the joy and benefits it brings. It’s about recommending books, sharing reading lists, and creating environments that foster a love for reading. Schools and communities can play a significant role by organizing book fairs, reading clubs, and author meet-and-greets, making reading accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

In conclusion, hobbies are essential for personal growth, relaxation, and enjoyment. My hobby, reading, has opened up a world of knowledge and imagination, providing countless benefits and shaping the person I am today. It stands as a testament to the transformative power of hobbies and their ability to enrich our lives in myriad ways. For students and individuals looking to explore their passions, develop new skills, and find a fulfilling escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, I highly recommend finding a hobby that resonates with you. It could be reading or any other activity that brings you joy and fulfillment. Hobbies are not just pastimes; they are pathways to discovering our passions, enhancing our lives, and experiencing the world in new and exciting ways.

Since childhood, I have developed an interest for drawing and love to make sketches, filling a white sheet of paper with life and colors. I don’t know what prompted me towards drawing; nevertheless it is my favourite pastime and my favourite hobby.

Drawing has many mental benefits apart from improving your drawing skills with every new sketch you make. It improves your imagination as your mind constantly juggles through the thoughts of making new figures and filling it with colors.

To draw a sketch in detail you need to be focused and keep your mind concentrated, eliminating any kind of external distraction. The attention to detail that you put in the drawing will require all your imagination and concentration. The ability to concentrate while doing a particular job stays with you always in other works as well.

Drawing is good for the development of the brain and hand-eye coordination. You will constantly think new thins to draw and immediately start giving it shape on paper, working your eyes, brain and hand in synchronization. My Hobby Essay 500 Words

Everyone has a hobby which he/she wants to involve in, whenever the time permits. It makes one physically active and builds mental stamina. I too have a hobby and that is to play cricket during holidays or whenever I get time.

My Hobby – Cricket

Cricket is a hobby I’m truly passionate about. I’ve been playing it since I was a kid, and I’ve always loved the excitement and fun it brings. Cricket is a sport I find challenging and rewarding, and it makes me feel satisfied and happy.

Advantages of Playing Cricket

There are several health benefits of playing cricket; moreover it is also good for building up of mental strength and happiness.

Playing cricket improves your physical stamina, makes your reflexes sharp, and improves your agility and overall physical fitness. Playing it regularly isn’t only beneficial for your body as well as for the mind, besides it also instills confidence, ability to coordinate and work as a team, leadership quality etc.

Getting Selected for Cricket in India

The Indian cricket team selects its players through the BCCI’s zonal selection policy. In this policy, there is one selector for each of the five zones, and the BCCI appoints one member as the chairman of the selection committee.

The Traditional Way

If you are a normal player hopeful of getting selected in India Cricket Team one day, then the traditional procedure for you is to begin from playing in your school or club level cricket team. Not only that, you must also make a mark by playing in local tournaments and get noticed. If you play good enough, you will be selected for the under 13 cricket team of your district. Remember this all has to happen during your early teens.

After getting selected in District under 13 team, you need to maintain your form and get selected for under 13 state team from then on moving up to under 16 and then under 19. The Indian under 19 cricket team is selected out of the state under 19 teams that play against each other.

There are many factors that come into play here including your luck, skills and competitors.

The Non-Traditional Way

If for some reason you cannot get into the cricket teams by the traditional ways as described above, there is still hope, but I must remind you that the nontraditional way is very difficult and no one, not that I can remember, had been selected this way.

You begin with enrolling in a good cricketing club in your city or town and practice for unusually longer hours. In fact, practice is what you must be doing 24/7, and money also should not be a problem for you. All you should be caring about is your fitness and game.

Thereby, by performing well in club cricket, you should get noticed by the upper-division teams. If you are lucky enough you will be asked by the team to join them. From there on it all depends on you and by performing extraordinarily you can play for state team or the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Cricket is one of the most popular sports of the world and offers an extraordinary career option. However, the key to become a successful cricketer is to practice hard and also to start early in life. If your are passionate about cricket and in your early teens the chances of your getting selected in the under 19 India Cricket Team one day are brighter.

A Thing I Used to Love

Parenthood took cooking from me. here’s how i’m getting it back..

In the small town where I live, there are few takeout options. The community has worked around this fact with active use of meal trains . I always sign up. And as I press foil-wrapped containers into my children’s hands, sending them to knock on the doors of friends and acquaintances—or to not knock, to drop on a doormat and retreat quietly—I tell them why cooking and delivering food to people who have new babies, or who are ill or impacted by natural disasters, is important. Food is the thing that we all share , I say; it’s a way to tell someone you see them.

I do not tell them about my own ambivalence about making that food. It’s new. “I used to love to cook,” says nearly every parent I know, “until I had children.”

I enjoyed cooking, too, probably thanks to my own mother. She is enthusiastically present while cooking and eating. She paid attention through meals, coaxed me to talk as a reticent teenager by assigning me cooking tasks. I made jubilant, chaotic, casual dinners in dorms, apartments, and hostels, in various cities, every year of my adult life. But with small kids, I am nearly always low on time, deluged with physical labor, and cleaning something up long before I enter a kitchen. At the same time, magazines, influencers, and occasionally the New York Times Parenting section tell me that what and how I feed my children will shape their immune systems, palates, and eating habits for life, not to mention the environment and foodways around us. The result is that I spend more time than I’d like to thinking about what my children eat.

The change happened slowly. I never stopped cooking; children need to eat. But suddenly, I could not remember the last time I felt joy, creativity, or pride while making or serving food.

At first I thought my pleasure had been felled, as for others experiencing post-COVID cooking burnout , by stale recipes. Fine. We live in an era of briskly selling cookbooks and so many food blogs they have meta-guides . Yet none of these helped me. The knowing authoritarianism of the domestic goddess, the inaccessibility of the lauded chef, the science-of-food authors who complicated things beyond my means to care or clean up—they all made my malaise worse.

The always growing “quick and easy” genre felt especially tricky. These recipes mostly fell into two camps. First were those that were, despite their claims, quite complex, with hard-to-find ingredients and 16-step instructions that would surely take me longer than the projected 15 minutes. On the other hand, some simple “quick school-night recipes” produced bland food that, mommy blogs seemed to say, was just my lot now. Optimistic advance-prepped casseroles, meatballs, and one-pot meals estranged me from life with small dependents far more than my three funny, hearty-eating children had.

Could I research my way back to joy? I tried to. I talked to friends: sympathetic but unhelpful; those with children missed enjoying cooking, too. A chef: vaguely amused— joy? In cooking? Food journalist Elizabeth Dunn, whose podcast explores the many issues around children and food: The physicality of having small kids, she told me, stole her enjoyment of “the sensory quality of cooking.”

Political scientist and Cookbook Politics author Kennan Ferguson hinted at why books had not helped me. Cookbooks, he said, “both bring you into and demand a collective response.” Many reinforce traditional gender roles and family dynamics. And others are “about performance and enjoyment of performance.” I disliked both categories.

“Our contemporary food culture makes multiple ethical demands on parents,” Ferguson explained. “Cookbooks similarly can feel particularly oppressive about a sense of perfection and performance.”

Finally, I understood my own reaction. Parenting small children can, in its harder moments, feel theatrical to me: performing patience, performing familiarity with new school and playground communities, performing confidence in the precarious social and political systems around our family. And food, obviously, is not only about eating or nourishment. We talk easily these days about how what we eat encompasses logistics, care, attention, economics, politics, environment, culture , a relationship to a physical body. As Ferguson put it, food is about the entire “human sensorium.”

But the sum of the proliferation of food culture, to someone raising a young child, is pressure and judgment . It stems, researchers have found, from the precarity and stress that dominate many aspects of raising small children in this country, and it’s felt by American parents across the economic spectrum . Well-meaning emphasis on the many ways that childhood food exposure shapes our children often leaves out an essential element of preparing and sharing food, one that fights against the anxiety that cripples many contemporary parents: sheer pleasure.

In the same way that children’s eating gets fraught when they’re forced to clean their plates, the joy a parent might take from cooking often dissipates under pressure. And a parent’s happiness matters to children’s physical and mental health and to broader political activism , too.

Holding the importance of my own lost pleasure in my mind alongside the stakes of what my children eat hasn’t exactly brought it back. As Dunn told me, “I still don’t love cooking anymore.” Instead, I’ve looked at the sincere joy in cooking-adjacent moments. Watching my 3-year-old son cut mushrooms with gorgeous determination, or realizing that my elder child learned to crack an egg at school. Listening to them all giggle as they vigorously mix rice, dal, tomatoes, and yogurt together—feeling gratitude for the Indian takeout place a few towns over—and call the process “making butter.” They understand, already, how food can feel alchemical.

One book, though, helped me feel certain that my earnest love of cooking will someday return. A collection of novelist Laurie Colwin’s food essays reminded me of all the things cooking does far beyond nourishing children—offering social connection, aesthetic experimentation, political engagement, sheer deliciousness. She does not emphasize performance or perfection, her recipes are devastatingly simple, and my copy of Home Cooking contains zero photos. Colwin is suggestive rather than prescriptive. I made her chicken with paprika and apples.

A chicken, quartered; two apples, sliced; paprika, dusted; a little butter.

Catch in the Act

Jeanne Breen makes her New York Times debut with a puzzle in collaboration with Jeff Chen.

Actors perform as the Washington Senators baseball team in the musical comedy “Damn Yankees.”

By Sam Corbin

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — Having spent the last few days in bed recovering from a bug — but enjoying Wordplay, thanks to my colleagues — I can attest to the restorative effects of leisurely distractions. I convalesced with a cocktail of old movies, crosswords and frantic trips to the patio to stare at my soon-to-be-thriving vegetable garden (the red kale is doing well, thank you). How lovely to be reminded, once back at my desk, that one of these wonderful distractions is, in fact, my day job.

Today’s crossword was constructed by Jeanne Breen and Jeff Chen. The elixirs in their theme may not be the kind that doctors recommend for getting over a cold, but the joke that connected them all made me laugh — which really is the best medicine of all.

Today’s Theme

Bartenders who solve crosswords are finally having their day. The entries at 17-, 26-, and 36-/38-Across feature ingredient combinations for various cocktails, and our first job is to name them. Safe to say, this was not my forte: I can barely say “I’ll take a dry gin martini” without making it sound like a question. This is an example of why using your crossings — a skill we cover in our (beginner-friendly!) guide to solving crosswords — can make all the difference for a successful solve.

“Vodka + coffee liqueur + Irish cream + heavy cream” make up a MUDSLIDE (17A). Combine “Light rum + dark rum + orange juice + passion fruit syrup,” and you’ve got a HURRICANE (26A). And if you light “rum + brandy + pineapple juice + orange juice + orgeat syrup” on fire — only for cocktail-making purposes, please — you get a FLAMING VOLCANO (36/38A).

The names of these drinks imply danger — and that, dear reader, is what makes each clue a RECIPE FOR DISASTER (46/56A).

Tricky Clues

19A. One definition of the word “Skimpy” refers specifically to body-baring clothing. Here, the term describes a more general lacking quality: MEASLY.

24A. It brings me no pleasure to inform those of you who may be beginning to solve crosswords that, yes, an entry can just be a string of consonants. But we usually get a hint in the clue: “Some LG products,” for example, uses a brand name that consists of only consonants. Its answer, HD TVS, follows suit.

31A. The first time that I (a Canadian) got stuck on the clue “ ___ Miss,” my partner (an American) answered automatically: OLE. The University of Mississippi is simply known as OLE Miss, though the origins of the nickname are somewhat less simple to identify.

64A. These “Hard knocks?” aren’t the kind that made the orphans in “Annie” so weary. They’re RAPS .

3D. If you are “In the thick of things, so to speak,” you may be MIDSTREAM.

7D. Crossword purists may balk at the inclusion of a certain article in this entry for “Currency debut of 2002,” THE EURO. (While EURO has appeared over 300 times in past puzzles, THE EURO has appeared only twice.)

18D. So long as car companies keep releasing models with common nouns as names, crossword constructors will keep using those names to trick you. “Explorers and others, in brief” features a veiled capital, which is a hidden proper noun (in this case, it’s Explorers). Ford Explorers are S.U.V.S.

Constructor Notes

Jeanne Breen: Just a little over a year after diving into crossword construction, I’m thrilled to be making my New York Times debut in collaboration with Jeff Chen. I’m an infectious disease physician, an instructor at Yale School of Medicine and a consultant to the biopharmaceutical industry. When not working, there’s a good chance you’ll find me swimming laps, reading or being amused by my Chihuahua, Griffin. In April of 2023, after many years of solving crosswords, I decided I wanted to learn how to construct them. I took Brooke Husic and Natan Last’s four-session construction course, bought Patrick Berry’s “Crossword Constructor’s Handbook,” consulted several online tools and set about attempting to create my own puzzles. When I contacted the Times puzzle editors about possibly connecting with a mentor, Tracy Bennett pointed me in the direction of Jeff, who couldn’t have been more gracious toward this rookie. We batted ideas back and forth across the continent via email (I’m in Connecticut, Jeff’s in Seattle), testing out phrases that might generate good themes. Jeff mentioned RECIPE FOR DISASTER, and I immediately thought of HURRICANE and MUDSLIDE — and Dairy Queen’s Blizzard treat, which didn’t end up in the final version. Once we had our final theme set, Jeff let me take the lead in laying out the grid and was both encouraging and patient as I did so. Filling the grid was similarly collaborative. In addition to serving as a wonderful new hobby, constructing has introduced me, both in person and virtually, to so many inspiring, encouraging, friendly and witty people from whom I know I’ll continue to learn. Gratitude! Jeff Chen: Jeanne is a pleasure to work with! Quite the opposite of a 46/56A.
