Ahaana, Arjun Ashokan and Lal in Nancy Rani

Ahaana Krishna has a new film on the way. The first look poster of the film, titled Nancy Rani, was revealed on her 25th birthday. 

Written and directed by debutant Joseph Manu James, the film also stars Arjun Ashokan, Lal, Aju Varghese, and Basil Joseph are among the principal cast. Roy Sebastian Kailath, John W Varghese and Rejanish Babu are bankrolling the film.

Mammootty, Prithviraj and others shared the poster on their social media pages. Sharing the poster, Ahaana wrote, “Meet Nancy Rani - My Next. Thanking the Universe for this beautiful opportunity of getting to be Nancy and getting to work with a wonderful crew and some amazing actors.

This one is close to heart.” The film has Ragesh Narayanan behind the camera and Basodh T Baburaj on the editing. Manu Gopinath and Stephin-Joseph are working on the music. Ahaana, last seen in Luca, is also part of Sunny Wayne-starrer Pidikittapulli.

She has just completed her final year of college and is working towards establishing herself in the film industry.

Eldest daughter of noted film and TV actor Krishna Kumar, Ahaana was born in a Malayalee Hindu family. After having completed her schooling from Holy Angels' ISC School, Trivandrum, she went to M.O.P.Vaishnav College in Chennai, for her degree course. Mallika Sukumaran is a yesteryear actress who debuted in 1974 in the movie Uttarayanam directed by G. Aravindan. She was born in 1954 in Haripad, Alappuzha district, Kerala. She married the late actor Sukumaran in the year 1979 and withdrew from the film industry to devoted her time for her family until her husband’s death in 1997.

She made a comeback with a K.K. Rajeev Teleserial Paithozhiyathe with notable actors like Thilakan and Jayabharathi.  After that she did not have to look back, she continued acting in many serials portraying both positive and negative characters. Some of her noted serials during that time were Valayam, Sthree Oru Santhwanam, Snehadooram, American dreams, Porutham, and Harichandanam. Indrans, who was born as K. Surendran, is a Malayalam actor and costume designer. He has acted predominantly in many comedy films and over 250 films. He is the second child out of the seven children of Gomathi and Palavila Kochuvelu in Thiruvananthapuram, India in the year 1951. Indirans made his schooling at the Government Higher Secondary School in Kumarapuram until his fourth grade.

Sohan Seenulal is a Mollywood movie actor and director; He has worked in films like Thoppil Joppan in 2016, Vanyam in 2016 and Doubles in 2011. He has also appeared in a few movies like Oru Kuttanadan Blog and Parole .

His recent film was Oru Kuttanadan Blog in the year 2018. A list of his few more movies is Vanyam in 2016, The Great Father in 2017 and Doubles in 2017. His film The Great Father of 2017 had done a good collection in the box office and got average ratings from IMDB, but his movie Doubles was a flop, as released in the same year.

Dhruvan is a Malayalam film actor known for his portrayal of Balu in the year 2018, Dijo Jose Antony directed Malayalam movie, Queen, where he played the lead role in the film. The actor was born in the South Indian town of Ottapalam, in the Palakkad city of Kerala. Dhruvan’s debut movie Raag Rangeela, a Malayalam film by Yousef Mohammed, launched in the year 2016.

He is currently involved in Shafi’s 2019 film project Children’s Park. Dhruavn has worked alongside multitudes of popular actors like Niyas Backer, Saniya Iyyappan, and Vjiayaraghavan in the 2018 movie ‘Queen.’ The actor had a notable presence in the Mohanlal starrer movie ‘1971: Beyond Borders.’

Vishak Nair was born on 25th April 1992 in Cochin, Kerala. He is a very famous and talented actor in the Malayalam film industry; he also is a well-renowned theater actor. Vishak grew up in Dubai, where he completed his schooling and then moved to India to complete his bachelor’s degree, he completed his graduation in Mechanical engineering from NIT.

Writer/director Christina Choe , here making her feature debut, frames the first half hour or so of “Nancy” in a boxy, Academy-ratio format. It’s a suitable cage of sorts for the title character, played by Andrea Riseborough . In her mid-thirties, whippet thin and sporting a shag of jet-black hair, she is not a person who projects a lot of confidence and doesn’t seem to have much reason to.

She lives in a filthy hovel in upstate New York with her mom ( Ann Dowd ), who suffers from Parkinson’s disease. Their TV is a CRT type; the house’s climate control is a plastic fan. Nancy works at a local dentistry mill, and regales her colleagues with tales of her vacation in North Korea—one that we are apt to believe she did not, in fact, take.

Nancy’s imaginative life is pretty active. Her glove compartment is filled with short-story rejection letters, the latest one from The Paris Review , showing she aims pretty high at least. But she also keeps a blog, written under an assumed name, concocting tales concerning the birth and death of a child. Through this guise, she connects with and meets a bereaved father ( John Leguizamo ) and fools him into thinking she is once again pregnant. This ruse has consequences when they meet again by happenstance.

In her own little corner Nancy can’t, or at least doesn’t, do a whole lot of damage, but you get the sense that she could be very bad news for someone. After her mother dies, Nancy gets it into her head that she could instead be very good news for a bereaved couple a few hours’ drive away.

Ellen and Leo, played by J. Smith Cameron and Steve Buscemi , are a couple of kind, cozy academics who, 30 years before, lost their five-year-old daughter. In that she disappeared. They go on television to promote a scholarship they set up in her name. Watching the report, Nancy is transfixed. When a simulated picture of what girl, Brooke, would look like today, is put on screen, Nancy is overwhelmed. The “adult” Brooke does indeed look an awful lot like Nancy.

Nancy calls the couple’s home, speaks to a shocked and initially put-off Ellen, but talks her way into a visit. She packs a few clothes and the only object of meaning left to her—of course it’s her cat.

Around this time, unnoticeably, the movie literally opens up. The frame widens, and the rest of the movie plays out in a standard 1.85 format. In the Xavier Dolan movie “ Mommy ,” the director kept most of the movie in a narrow aspect ratio except for one scene set to an Oasis song in which the movie goes very wide, then shrinks down again. Dolan’s trick was to remind the audience who’s boss, a typically obnoxious move by a typically obnoxious filmmaker. Choe’s “opening up,” on the other hand, signifies just that and keeps the audience suspended—there are a lot of questions to come.

Including just what Nancy’s intentions are. As played by Riseborough, Nancy has a quiet, wide-eyed intensity that’s just this side of scary. Cameron and Buscemi, on the other hand, are warm, friendly, accepting. One is more accepting than the other; Ellen is practically ready to make Nancy family as soon as she moves in, while Leo, tiptoeing around his wife’s expectations and clear fragility, is more skeptical. He’s also allergic to cats, which makes the presence of Nancy’s beast a sticking point and eventually a plot point.

The filmmakers—it’s worth noting that this is a movie whose behind-the-camera creative team is almost entirely female—enact a strange but ultimately successful balancing act; the tension as the trio awaits the DNA test that will reveal if Nancy is indeed Brooke has a pall of dread over it. But what the film is finally about is not whether or not Nancy will inflict damage, but whether these lonely people can receive true grace. In this respect and several others, “Nancy” exhibits a seriousness of purpose that’s rare in American movies today.

Kasargold review: The gold smuggling story gets elevated by a stylish Asif Ali and Mridul Nair’s decent craft

Malayalam actor Asif Ali’s latest outing Kasargold focuses on the crime and fraud that take place in the gold business, especially in the Kasargod and Malabar areas.

The movie is written based on real-life smuggling cases, especially those reported in the airports of Northern Kerala. The gold in these cases is reportedly smuggled from the Gulf.

While Kasargold mentions these details, vengeance and backstabbing take its story forward.

This is Asif Ali’s second collaboration with his director-friend Mridul Nair who earlier helmed his debut movie B.Tech (2018).

Kasargold has a story that has elements of revenge, cheating, love and whatever is needed for a commercial entertainer.

The film begins with Alby (Asif Ali) and Nancy (Malavika Sreenath), who arrive at an airport in Kerala, losing the gold they’re smuggling from the Gulf.

Alby and his friend Faisal (Sunny Wayne) plan to loot the smuggled gold from the airport.

Moosa (Siddique) and Firoz (Ratheesh Poduval) are the key people behind the illegal gold business.

Alby and Faisal get into trouble as the entire gold smuggling team led by Moosa and Firoz keeps searching for them.

The movie is extensively shot in Kasargod which is notorious for gold smuggling. A few scenes have been shot in Goa where the story happens.

Layered plot.

There are many layers in the film.

In the beginning, a father narrates to his child a folktale of two friends who kill each other for a treasure (gold). In the end, though Alby and Faisal have their own problems in life, they don’t kill each other but get ready to sacrifice their lives. Now, that’s an irony!

Director Mridul Nair, who is also the co-scriptwriter, tries to convey that humans aren’t always opportunistic and evil by nature. This is a contrast to the folktale mentioned earlier.

The director beautifully portrays the camaraderie between Faisal and Alby. He is also smart enough to weave a story about how they befriend each other.

Another important part of Kasargold is the murder of two brothers in Thalassery which is organised by a political party aligned to the Left. The movie also becomes critical of the political murders.

The proper placement of four political goons (in disguise as tourists in Goa), who are after Alby and Faisai, makes for an interesting watch. Towards the climax, the reality is revealed and there is a fight scene that turns brutal.

The tail end is one of the highlights of the flick.

Technically good

A major highlight of Kasargold is its technical area where the cinematography and music play an important role.

The scenic beauty of Goa, Jose Giri and other parts of Payyanur and Kasargod are captured aesthetically. The song in the bar, too, is shot nicely. The fights and bike chase sequences are breathtakingly good.

The cinematography by Jebin Jacob elevates the movie, especially in the climax.

However, a slight lag in the second half is a disappointment. Some scenes could have been cut.

Performances

Kasargold has some good performances by its lead actors Asif Ali and Sunny Wayne. Their onscreen relationship is too good.

Asif Ali impresses us with his swag. Sunny Wayne gets a meaty role after a long time.

Vinayakan as police officer Alex Joseph is nice. But the audience who had a hangover from his amazing performance in Jailer (2023) might expect more from the actor here.

Siddique as gold smuggler Moosa and PP Kunhikrishnan as Narayanan are decent. They represent two different political parties in the movie and the nexus between them in terms of gold business is shown well by the director.

Ratheesh Poduval as Firoz delivers a decent performance.

Malavika Sreenath as Nancy, Alby’s girlfriend, is good.

Kasargold is a story that’s inspired by the gold smuggling cases reported in Kerala. Brilliant action sequences and Asif Ali’s swag make it a worthy watch.
