Filipino students write thank you letters to celebrate teachers.

Filipino students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 are writing letters and sending them in the mail to celebrate and give thanks to their teachers.

The letter writing initiative is part of the campaign “Salamat Po! Nationwide Letter Writing Advocacy program” of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) launched on World Teacher’s Day on October 5.

The PHLPost advocacy encourages students to recognize their teachers and other role models through the art of letter-writing. The campaign awards the best letters sent through the post office.

Students aged 10-15 years old are eligible to join the campaign’s raffle contest and on-the-spot letter-writing competitions for the right to represent the Philippines in an international letter writing tilt.

There are two (2) ways to win in the contest:

1. First, a student can write a letter by saying “Thank You” to their teacher’s through letter writing using the theme: “4A’s of Gratitude: Appreciation, Admiration, approval and attention”. The letters will be sent in a sealed envelope where the complete details of the sender and addressee are clearly written and visible. The thank you letters shall be mailed via the Post Office through Ordinary Mail Service.

The winners in the postal areas will qualify for the National on the Spot Universal Postal Union International Letter Writing Competition.

The winning entry will get PhP10,000 in cash and will represent the country in the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Letter Writing Competition in Berne, Switzerland to compete among entries from the 192 countries who are members of the UPU.

2. Second, upon mailing and sending of letters at the post office, a student will be given a raffle stub to be filled up and dropped in designated boxes located at post offices and shopping malls (SM and Robinson’s Postal Counter). Raffle Prizes will be given to the winners.

PHLPost also launched a special stamp, “Salamat Po Teacher Letter Writing” for World Teacher’s Day.

The stamps feature The special se-tenant pair (two different designs and face value join together) stamps depicts the logo of “My Teacher, My Hero”, “Excellent!”, and “Thank you, teacher” stamped on the outreached hand of a teacher.

The PHLPost Letter Writing Advocacy has been an annual program running on its 7th year.

The Department of Science and Technology has also recognized innovative science and math teachers through the Innobox Project.

Filipino teachers are also known worldwide for their excellence, nurturing, and sacrificing nature, among them, a 12-year-old volunteer teacher in the mountains of Sorsogon, a teacher with Down Syndrome , and a teacher who makes portraits of her students.

Thank-You Letters to Teachers

Sometimes we forget the impact that we have as teachers. Schools are busy places, and teachers are busy people, so it’s not surprising that sometimes we miss out on chances to stop and reflect upon the influence that we wield over the young people in our care. Often, it’s the little conversations, the easily-forgotten asides, the friendly smile or brief compliment that mean the most to young people – and while we might forget them by the time it comes to write the next report or plan the next lesson, those words can remain with a young person for a very long time, shaping their personality and their thoughts.

So, thank you to all the teachers out there. To show you how powerful you are, as individuals and as a profession, here are a collection of ‘Thank-You’ letters written by students thanking the teacher who, in his or her inimitable way, changed their lives for the better.

I hated you when I first met you. I hated the fact that you made me stand up straight. I hated the way you made me wear my uniform right. I hated the way you made me speak correctly. Most of all, I hated the way that you wouldn’t accept my work unless it was the best I could do. And the best always seemed more effort than I was willing to put in.

We had lots of arguments, at the start. I remember being kept in at lunch a lot. And despite my yelling and threats – even tears once or twice – I remember you never lost your temper. You were always patient with me. You always took the time to listen to me, whenever I wanted to be heard.

I look back upon that time as so important in the development of the person that I am today. You taught me discipline. You taught me dignity. Much more than English, which was what you were supposedly teaching me, you taught me that I could achieve more than what I or other people thought that I was capable of. I could be a success, instead of a clown.

For that lesson, I owe you so much.

Online classes may be the norm these days, but nothing can beat an actual classroom experience. Not only will it enable you to communicate with your teachers and classmates more effectively, but it will also help you get the most out of every class you take.

1. Basic Greetings 

In most schools in the Philippines, the only time you would actually hear Tagalog classroom greetings is during classes where Filipino is used as the main language, such as the Filipino subject, or sometimes, Social Studies.

English is the preferred means of communication in Filipino schools , especially private ones. However, in most public schools, students are encouraged to communicate in Filipino or use their dialect.

It’s also essential to learn how to address one’s teachers and classmates and not just what Filipino words to say when greeting them.

Female teachers are addressed either as Ginang (Ma’am/Mrs./Madam) or Binibini (Miss), while male teachers are addressed as Ginoo (Sir). There are no special titles used for addressing one’s fellow students, but showing respect and courtesy to one another is encouraged at all times.

2. Common Instructions and Commands Used by Teachers

The Philippine educational system is largely influenced by the country’s colonial past. It has adopted the Spanish way of teaching, in particular. This is characterized by an authoritarian management style where the teacher has complete control of everything going on inside the classroom. This is no longer a common practice, although courtesy, politeness, and respect are values that are still highly encouraged among students and teachers alike . The following are some of the most basic Filipino phrases used by teachers when addressing their students:

3. Phrases To Use When Asking for Clarifications

Asking for clarification is part of learning. It’s a great way for students to learn new information and better understand what has just been taught. Most teachers allow their students to ask questions regarding the lesson only after giving the lecture. 

Some would take a break midway to give students the opportunity to process what they have heard and ask for clarifications. A few others don’t mind if their students raise a question in the middle of the lesson. Just remember to ask politely and use the expression po as much as possible when addressing the teacher.

4. Phrases To Use When Explaining Absences and Tardiness

As much as we all love learning and would never want to be late or absent, there are times when we can’t help but miss school. This is where the importance of knowing how to provide reasons for your absence or delay comes in. 

Reasonable Excuses

Somewhat silly excuses.

There are valid excuses for being late or absent, and there are somewhat silly ones. But believe it or not, a lot of students still use them. You can’t fool teachers, though, especially the more experienced ones. Years of teaching have honed their intuition and will instantly know if you’re just making up your reasons for being tardy.

Hindi po nag-alarm yung orasan namin. (“Our alarm clock didn’t go off.”)

5. When Talking About Your Favorite Subjects

In the Philippines, most of the names of school subjects are in English. Most have Filipino translations, but they are only used in written communication and seldom in daily conversations. For instance, you won’t hear your classmate say Nagawa mo ba ang proyekto natin sa Sikolohiya? Instead, it’s Nagawa mo ba ang project natin sa Psychology? (“Were you able to work on our project in psychology?”). 

However, it’s still important to learn the Filipino equivalent of the names of common school subjects since they are what you will use when writing formal or academic papers in Filipino. Here’s a list of these subjects and their equivalent in English:

Filipino teachers and the passion that makes learning continuity possible

The new normal may have limited physical interaction, but in no way did it hinder the unyielding commitment and drive of those at the frontlines of education – Filipino teachers. Even if the academic community is facing numerous challenges in preparation for school year 2020-2021, countless Filipino teachers remain passionate about providing quality basic education to their students.

Putting Students First

Cagayan National High School Master Teacher Enrique Garcia remains committed to learning continuity during the pandemic.

Like many others, Mr. Garcia received training through webinars for distance learning. This prepares him and many others for the potential challenges that might come during the school year. “Last April, when we were still under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), I took the initiative to come up with self-paced modules. I thought of coming up with modules because this is one way I could help my students for the coming school year,” said Garcia.

According to Mr. Garcia, he spends his time collaborating with school leaders and his fellow teachers to create efficient class programs that will help the school adapt to the new normal. He also often meets with his colleagues virtually to discuss appropriate and effective learning delivery modalities for the upcoming school year.

Mr. Garcia goes the extra mile by putting his students first and considering what learning delivery modality is apt for each of them. “I have to consider those who have the resources and those who have limited resources. After all, I cannot utilize a one-size-fits-all scheme. I deeply understand that my students are as diverse as the dreams their hearts have known.”  Teachers like Mr. Garcia exemplify DepEd’s resolve by remaining committed to delivering education amidst the pandemic.

Pride of the Panay Bukidnon Tribe

Argy Catolin, a teacher at Aglonok Primary School Iloilo, is a modern-day hero during these unprecedented times. Mr. Catolin is a proud member of the Panay Bukidnon Tribe, which inspired him to teach as a way to make education accessible to his kin.

Even before the pandemic, Mr. Catolin has been going above and beyond to teach the students in Barangay Cahigon, Calinog, Iloilo. Due to the geographical conditions, students and teachers alike need to take a 2-hour motorcycle ride and a 3-hour walk to reach Aglonok Primary School. Nevertheless, these challenges didn’t stop Mr. Catolin. “Teaching is about inspiring others,” Mr. Catolin reiterates. He is fueled by his passion to touch the lives of his students and influence their future.

With the on-going pandemic, Mr. Catolin admits that students and teachers will face more difficulties in learning. The lack of electricity and reception in their area poses challenges in the upcoming school year. Recognizing the limitations of their area, his school has opted to utilize modular distance learning.

Despite the challenges they may face, teachers and parents at the Aglonok Primary School work together to make sure that students can adapt to the new normal in education. “In our case in upland areas, we always give our best in helping our pupils. We did it before the pandemic through the Adopt-a-Child Program,” Mr. Catolin shared. “In the new normal, we can help our students by providing learning materials and we can help our parents by providing accurate information regarding the new normal setting.”

“This pandemic affects everything all over the world.” Mr. Catolin said. “Until there’s no vaccine we have to deal with the new normal setting. Us teachers have to be equipped with a positive attitude towards this crisis.” Mr. Catolin also shared that it is only through the collective efforts of teachers, students, parents, and the Department of Education (DepEd) that they can make a difference during these difficult times.

Mr. Catolin and Mr. Garcia are only two of the countless teachers who have their students’ best interests at heart and are working tirelessly to ensure that they still receive quality education.

Both teachers insisted that learning must continue, even during this pandemic. Mr. Catolin believes that quality education can help reduce poverty, promote peace, and foster development in the community, which is why he is in favor of opening classes this year. “As a teacher, we have to be equipped with a positive attitude towards this crisis. Together, we can make a difference,” he said. 

Likewise, Mr. Garcia supports the various learning continuity initiatives in place for the incoming school year. “Education must continue. It is through it that we develop informed, critical, creative, adaptive, flexible, strong-spirited, culturally-clipped, morally-upright, and happy citizenry.”

The resilience, passion, and commitment of these teachers during these trying times have become a source of inspiration for others. As the teachers prepare for SY 2020-2021, the Department of Education (DepEd) is keen in providing support for these modern-day heroes. This is in line with the Department’s unwavering commitment to work with Filipino teachers to deliver quality education despite the circumstances. The collective efforts of the academic community, as well as the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan, are what will ultimately make the incoming school year a success.
