How to set a static IP address on Windows 11

Here are the steps to set a static IP address on Windows 11 with Command Prompt, PowerShell, Control Panel, and Settings.

Avatar for Mauro Huculak

UPDATED 7/21/2023: On Windows 11, a static IP address is a network configuration that never changes, making it the preferred option to share files , a printer on a local network , or configure port forwarding.

Usually, when a computer connects to the network, it receives a dynamic IP address assigned by the local Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. The only problem is that this configuration can change at any time, as soon as you restart the computer or after the settings expire, and this can cause services like port forwarding and remote desktop to stop working. A static network configuration always maintains the same settings, making it ideal for hosting services that other users can access through the network.

This guide will teach you how to set a static IP (version 4) address on Windows 11 . (See also this video tutorial with the steps to complete this task.)

Assign static IP address on Windows 11 from Command Prompt

Assign static ip address on windows 11 from powershell, assign static ip address on windows 11 from settings, assign static ip address on windows 11 from control panel.

To set a static IP address on Windows 11 with Command Prompt, use these steps:

Open Start on Windows 11.

Search for Command Prompt , right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to see your current networking configuration and press Enter :

Under the network adapter, note the name of the adapter as well as the following information in these fields:

  • Subnet mask
  • Default Gateway
  • DNS Servers

Windows 11 ipconfig all command

Type the following command to assign a static IP address on Windows 11 and press Enter :

In the above command, replace “Ethernet0” with the name of your network adapter. Change “10.1.4.119 255.255.255.0 10.1.4.1” with the device IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway address corresponding to the local area network.

Type the following command to set a DNS server address and press Enter :

In the command, make sure to change “Ethernet0” with your adapter’s name and “10.1.4.1” with the DNS server address of the network.

Type the following command to set an alternate DNS server address and press Enter :

In the command, change “Ethernet0” with the adapter’s name and “8.8.8.8” with an alternate DNS server address.

Windows 11 netsh command to set static IP address

After completing the steps, you can use the ping command (for example ping google.com ) to see if the configuration works correctly.

You can use PowerShell with the “NetTCPIP” module to manage networking settings, including changing the IP address settings to a static configuration.

To set a static IP address with PowerShell, use these steps:

Open Start .

Search for PowerShell , right-click the result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to view your current network configuration and press Enter :

Get-NetIPConfiguration

Confirm the following network information:

  • InterfaceIndex
  • IPv4Address
  • IPv4DefaultGateway

Type the following command to set a static IP address and press Enter :

PowerShell assign static IP address

In the command, replace the “InterfaceIndex” number (10) with the corresponding number of your adapter. Change “IPAddress” with the static IP address you want to assign to your device. Change “PrefixLength” (subnet mask) with the correct bit number if necessary. Typically, on a home network, the setting is “24.” Also, change the “DefaultGateway” option with the default gateway address of the network.

Type the following command to assign a DNS server address and press Enter :

PowerShell assign static DNS address

If you need to set a secondary DNS server address, use a comma to use the same command with another address. For example:

In the command, replace the “InterfaceIndex” number (10) with your network adapter’s corresponding number. Also, change “ServerAddresses” with the DNS IP address.

Once you complete the steps, the new network configuration will apply to the computer.

Regardless of your chosen method, always assign a TCP/IP address in the network range and outside of the DHCP server scope to allow proper connectivity and avoid configuration conflicts. The reason is that multiple computers sharing the same address will cause problems, preventing them from connecting to the internet.

On Windows 11, you can set a static IP address configuration from the Settings app for wireless and wired adapters.

Set static IP address on Wi-Fi adapter

To assign a static IP address configuration to a Wi-Fi adapter, use these steps:

Change TCP/IP settings

TCP/IP defines how your PC communicates with other PCs.

To make it easier to manage TCP/IP settings, we recommend using automated Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP automatically assigns Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to the computers on your network if your network supports it. If you use DHCP, then you don't have to change your TCP/IP settings if you move your PC to another location, and DHCP doesn't require you to manually configure TCP/IP settings, such as Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).

To enable DHCP or change other TCP/IP settings

Select  Start , then type settings . Select  Settings  >  Network & internet .

Do one of the following:

For a Wi-Fi network, select  Wi-Fi  >  Manage known networks . Choose the network for which you want to change the settings.

For an Ethernet network, select  Ethernet , then select the Ethernet network you’re connected to.

Next to  IP assignment , select  Edit .

Under  Edit network IP settings or Edit IP settings , select  Automatic (DHCP)  or  Manual .

To specify IPv4 settings manually

Under  Edit network IP settings or Edit IP settings , choose  Manual , then turn on  IPv4 .

To specify an IP address, in the  IP address, Subnet mask , and  Gateway  boxes, type the IP address settings.

To specify a DNS server address, in the  Preferred DNS  and  Alternate DNS  boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.

To specify if you want to use an encrypted (DNS over HTTPS) or unencrypted connection to the DNS server or servers you specify, for DNS over HTTPS , choose the setting you want:

Off : All DNS queries will be sent to the DNS server unencrypted in plaintext over HTTP.

On (automatic template) : DNS queries will be encrypted and sent to the DNS server over HTTPS. DNS queries will use the default settings for the automatic template or try to discover them automatically.

On (manual template) : DNS queries will be encrypted and sent to the DNS server over HTTPS. They’ll use the settings you enter in the DNS over HTTPS template box.

If you use DNS over HTTPS (automatic or manual template), turn Fallback to plaintext on or off:

When it’s turned on, a DNS query will be sent unencrypted if it can’t be sent over HTTPS.

When it’s turned off, a DNS query won’t be sent if it can’t be sent over HTTPS.

To specify IPv6 settings manually

Under  Edit network IP settings or Edit IP settings , choose  Manual , then turn on  IPv6 .

To specify an IP address, in the  IP address , Subnet prefix length , and  Gateway  boxes, type the IP address settings.

When you select  Automatic (DHCP) , the IP address settings and DNS server address setting are set automatically by your router or other access point (recommended).

When you select  Manual , you can manually set your IP address settings and DNS server address.

When you’re done, select  Save .

Note:  To install IPv4, run Command Prompt as an administrator, type netsh interface ipv4 install , and then press Enter .

Select Start   , then select Settings   > Network & Internet   .

For a Wi-Fi network, select Wi-Fi   > Manage known networks . Choose the network you want to change the settings for, then select Properties.

How to Set Up Static IP Address on Windows 11

If you don’t want your IP address to change every time you reconnect to a WiFi network, you must set up a static IP address on Windows 11. This guide shows you how.

Unlike dynamic IP addresses, which are automatically and randomly assigned by the router, a static IP address remains constant. i.e., your IP address won’t change even after reconnecting to the network. There are several advantages to using a static IP address. It gives your device a constant identity and allows other devices on your network to communicate with your device easily. For example, a static IP address makes it easy to access your device using Remote Desktop. Additionally, assigning a static IP to Windows 11 allows you to set up specific rules, such as network speed limitations, website blocks, etc., in the router to better manage the network connection.

In this small tutorial, let me take you through setting up a static IP address on your Windows 11 system from Settings and Command Prompt.

Assign static IP address on Windows 11 from Settings

To set up static IP address on Windows 11, follow the steps given below.

Step 1: Launch the Settings on Windows 11.

Use the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut or right-click on the taskbar’s Start icon and click on the “Settings” option. This action will open the Settings app.

Step 2: Open the network properties.

In the Settings window, go to the “Network & Internet” tab on the sidebar, click on Wi-Fi, and then click on the current network properties option. If you are using an ethernet connection, click on ethernet and then click on the network properties option.

click on Windows 11 WiFi network properties

Step 3: Click the Edit button next to IP Assignment.

Now, scroll down to the IP Assignment section and click on the Edit button. This action allows you to edit the IP address settings on Windows 11.

edit network IP configuration - click on edit

Step 4: Enable the IPv4 option and add the preferred IP address, Subnet mask, default gateway, and preferred DNS address.

In the Edit Network IP Settings window, enable the IPv4 option and type the below details in their respective fields and click on the “Ok” button to save the changes.

  • Preferred IP address: The IP address you want to assign to Windows 11.55
  • Subnet mask: You can get this from the router’s local network settings.
  • Default gateway: You can get this from the router’s local network settings.
  • Preferred DNS: You can either use the DNS provided by your router or a custom DNS server .

enter IP address details to set up static IP address on Windows 11

That is it. With that, you’ve assigned a static IP address. From now on, the router will automatically assign the static IP address whenever you system connects to it assuming you’ve configured relevant rules in the router.

Assign static IP address on Windows 11 from Command Prompt

Follow the steps below to set up static IP address using Command Prompt on Windows 11.

First of all, open the Command Prompt window . You can do that by searching for Command Prompt in the Start menu. Alternatively, open Windows Terminal and launch the Command Prompt tab in it.

Before you can set up the static IP address, you need a few important details such as the subnet mask, default gateway, and preferred DNS. To get them run the ipconfig /all command . This will list all the network adapters and their configuration details. Next, note down the adapter name and IP addresses of the Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers (note down the IPv4 address).

ipconfig /all command

Now, run the below command while replacing the dummy text with the actual details you noted down.

netsh interface ip set address name="AdapterName" static IPAddress SubnetMask DNSAddress

Once you replace all the details like the adapter name subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server, this is what the command looks like.

netsh interface ip set address name="Wi-Fi" static 192.168.142.42 255.255.255.0 192.168.142.1

This will assign the static IP. From now on, the router will automatically assign the static IP address whenever your system connects to it assuming you’ve configured relevant rules in the router.

That is it. I hope this small tutorial helped you in making Windows 11 use a static IP address.

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows

If you have not configured your IP address, your device must be assigned automatically via your router using a protocol named “Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)”. This is quite useful as you are not required to manually feed in the numbers inside the IPv4 setting. The only downside to this is that it might change from time to time.

Should I assign a static IP address?

Most of the time, your device doesn’t require a static or unchanging IP address. However, this may change if you meet one of the conditions below –

  • To recognize your device using an IP address: This might be a case if you or your friends want to locate your PC using its IP address. Setting a fixed IP even helps in troubleshooting network-related errors.
  • To let apps connect to your network device: If you have certain apps that can only connect to a network device using its IP address.

There might be a few additional reasons why you are looking to make your IP address static. Well, whatever the reason in your case, assigning this is not a difficult task.

Ways to Set a Static IP Address 0n Windows 11/10

If you want to assign a static IP address to your Windows 11/10 or older operating systems, go through all possible ways, and apply the one that seems applicable to your device –

  • Assign a Static IP Address via Settings (Win 11/10)
  • Use PowerShell to assign a static IP address (All versions)
  • Set a Static IP Address via CMD (Win 10 and Below)
  • Via Control Panel (Win 8.1/8/7)

1. Assign a Static IP Address via Settings (Win 11/10)

This is the easiest of all four methods discussed in this guide. All you require is to visit the Ethernet/Wireless setting page and set a static IP address there. Here’s how to configure this setting –

  • Press Win + I to open the Settings page.
  • Select Network & Internet and head over to the right section.
  • If you are on a wired network, select Ethernet else WiFi .
  • Select the device that you are using to establish a network connection.

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows - Select WiFi Properties

  • Click the Edit button available next to IP Assignment .

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows - Edit IP Assignment

  • A pop-up window will appear next. Use the drop-down and select Manual .
  • Enable the IPv4 toggle switch and put a static IP address.
  • Fill in the other areas like Subnet prefix length to ’24’ and Gateway to ‘10.1.2.1’.
  • If you do have some preferred DNS address, use that in the respective blanks. Else, leave it blank.
  • Similarly, enter the Alternate DNS address if you have any.
  • In the end, hit Save, and restart File Explorer.

Open your default web browser and check if you can browse over the internet.

2. Use PowerShell (All versions)

If you love doing things via PowerShell/CMD the most, here’s how to assign a static IP address using PowerShell –

  • Right-click on the Windows icon and select Windows Terminal (Admin) .
  • The default interface setting on the Terminal is the Windows PowerShell. If not, use the drop-down menu and select the same. You may also press “Ctrl+Shift+1” to start PowerShell inside Windows Terminal.
  • Copy/paste the below code and hit Enter to see your current network configuration.

Get-NetIPConfiguration

  • Running this command will display the current configuration on your device.

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows - PowerShell

  • Note down the following details from the list of the available information –

InterfaceIndex

IPv4Address

IPv4DefaultGateway

  • After you have noted down the values of the above items, run this code –

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 5 -IPAddress 192.168.202.149 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.202.15

Note : Make sure to replace the InterfaceIndex, IPAddress, and DefaultGateway values in the above code. By default, the PrefixLength (subnet mask) remains 24 for a home network. So, change it only when the same varies on your device.

  • If you want to assign a static DNS server to your network, run this code –

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 5 -ServerAddresses 192.168.202.15

  • To add a secondary DNS server address, run the above command including an extra address separated with a comma.

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 5 -ServerAddresses 192.168.202.15, 8.8.8.8

That’s it, your IP address and associated server addresses have become now static. Open your web browser and see if everything is working all right.

3. Set a Static IP Address via CMD (Win 10 and Below)

Command Prompt also provides a way that you can use to set a static IP address on the computer. However, this method might not work on the latest versions of Windows including Windows Server 2012.

  • Launch Command Prompt as an administrator .
  • When it opens up, type the code below and press Enter –

ipconfig /all

  • Go to the Network Adapter (Wireless/Wired), and note down the following details –

IPv4 Subnet mask Default Gateway DNS Servers

  • After you have noted down the values of the above items, run this code –

netsh interface ip set address name ="Interface Name" static IP_Address Subnet Mask Gateway

For example – netsh interface ip set address name=”Wi-Fi” static 192.168.202.149 255.255.255.0 192.168.202.15

In the example above, “Wi-Fi” is the interface name while the others are the IP address , Subnet Mask , and default gateway address .

  • If you want to assign a static DNS server address to your device, execute the command below –

netsh interface ip set dns name=”Your DNS Name” static Your_DNS_Server_Address

Now that you have assigned a static IP address, and DNS server to your device, open your default web browser and check if everything is working alright.

Note : Netsh command is deprecated on Windows Server 2012, Windows latest versions. Instead of using the Network Shell command, you can still use the NetTPIP networking module offered by PowerShell.

4. Via Control Panel (Win 8.1/8/7)

Though the PowerShell method will work on all older versions of Windows, if you are not comfortable with running codes, you may use the Control Panel method –

  • First of all, open the Control Panel .
  • Select Network & Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  • On the left navigation pane, hit Change adapter settings .

Network and Sharing Center Control Panel

  • Right-click on the Current Adapter (Wireless/Ethernet), and hit the option – Properties .

Network Connections

  • On the subsequent pop-up window, double-click on the option – Internet Protocol Version 4 ( TCP/IPv4 ).
  • Enable the “ Use the following IP address ” radio button, and fill in all the necessary details like – Your IP address, Subnet Mask, and default gateway.
  • Next, tick the “Use the following DNS server addresses” checkbox, and type your preferred DNS server, and the Alternate DNS server. The computer will try connecting to the alternate server in case the preferred DNS is not reaching.
  • In the end, hit OK and keep doing so on the prior opened windows as well.
  • After you close all windows, restart your PC .

Sign back into your PC and check if you can surf effectively on your default web browser.

I hope you now know how to assign a static IP address to your device.

How to Set Static IP Address on Windows 11/10.

A static IP address is a dedicated, permanent IP address that is manually assigned to a device by a user. Unlike dynamic IP addresses, which are assigned by a DHCP Server and can change over time, static IP addresses remain fixed and do not change over time.

A static IP address can be useful in many situations, such as when hosting a website or server, setting up a virtual private network (VPN) server, forwarding ports to a specific device, accessing a networked printer, and more.

Whatever your reason may be, assigning a static IP address is a simple and straightforward task that can be done directly on the device. In this article, we will cover various methods for setting up a static IP address on Windows 11/10.

How to Assign a Static IP Address on a Windows 11 PC.

  • Set Static IP on Windows 11 Settings.

What Is Static IP Address

What does IP address mean? An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique number assigned to every device on a network; it identifies the computers connected to the internet and used by network devices to communicate with other devices.

What is a static IP address? To be specific, a static IP address is a permanent (32 bit) number assigned to a computer via ISP (Internet service provider). All in all, the static IP address is known as fixed IP address or dedicated IP address that is relative to the dynamic IP address.

Static vs Dynamic IP Addresses

What is a dynamic IP address? Dynamic means change; Dynamic addresses are assigned by the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) servers and they are changed from time to time.

What are the main differences between static IP address and dynamic IP address? The static IP address doesn’t change while the dynamic IP address changes over time.

How To Install And Configure DHCP Server On Your PC

What does DHCP server configuration mean? How to install and configure the DHCP server on the computer you use?

In the following content, I’ll tell you why you need to use a static IP address. Then, I’ll show you how to set a static IP address.

Why Should You Use Static IP Address

What are the reasons for setting up a static IP address on your Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer?

How to Set a Static IP Address on Windows 11?

How to Set a Static IP Address on Windows 11? 1

When your computer connects to an internet source, the local Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server allocates a dynamic IP address to your Windows 11 PC. As the name suggests, the dynamic IP address changes every time the computer reboots, the router restarts, after the settings expire, or when devices leave and join the network. This prevents you from using port forwarding features or problems in connecting with the remote desktop.

This calls in for the static IP address which does not change under any circumstance. A static configuration retains the same settings allowing service hosting when it needs to be accessed across networks. Thus, a static IP address is ideal for sharing files and folders, accessing printers on a local network, or configuring port forwarding settings.

If you are clueless about how to address the static IP address on a Windows 11 PC, we’ve got you covered. In this detailed guide, we have provided a step-by-step tutorial to set a static IP (version 4) address on your Windows 11 PC. So without wasting any time, let’s get started.

Ways to Change the Static IP Address on Windows PC

Below are the different ways offered by Microsoft by which you can change the static IP address on your Windows 11 device.

1. Set the Static IP using the Command Prompt

You can set the static IP address on the Windows 11 PC directly by executing the commands on the command prompt window. Here is the step-by-step process of the same:

Launch command prompt in administrator mode

  • Choose Yes from the User Action Control prompt to provide administrative privileges to the Command Prompt.

Execute ipconfig command

  • When the information is displayed, note down the following details for later use.  IPv4 Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway DNS Servers

For example, the command should look like this: netsh interface ip set address name= “Ethernet” static 10.221.55.4 255.255.255.0 10.201.58.1

Execute netsh command

For instance, the command will look like this: netsh interface ip set dns name= “Ethernet” static 10.211.55.1 windows 11 netsh set dns command

Execute netsh command to set DNS server

As soon as you execute the command, your static IP address will now be allocated.

2. Set the Static IP using the Windows Settings app

If you are not well versed with the command prompt, you can directly set the static IP address using the Windows 11 settings app. However, you need to copy the current network configuration by executing the command in the command prompt window.

Launch command prompt in administrator mode

  • Note down the following details for later use. IPv4 Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway DNS Servers
  • Use the Windows + I shortcut to launch the Settings app on Windows 11 PC.

Select Wifi from Network and internet settings

  • Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and Preferred DNS values that you copied previously and put them in the appropriate fields.
  • Once done, press the Save button to apply the changes.

3. Set static IP on Windows 11 using Windows PowerShell

It is also possible to set the static IP address using Windows PowerShell built inside Windows 11 PC, but there is a catch! Using the Windows Powershell, you cannot set the current IP address to static. To fix this, you need to change the last digit of the IP address to something else.

Run Powershell as administrator

  • Now note down the following details from the information section: InterfaceIndex, IPv4Address, IPv4DefaultGateway, DNSServer
  • Now execute the command and replace the square bracketed placeholders with the values written earlier. Do not forget to replace the last digit of the IPv4 address with something else. New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex [InterfaceIndex] -IPAddress [IPv4Address] -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway [IPv4DefaultGateway]

Set DNS server using Windows PowerShell

4. Set the Static IP using the Control Panel

Launch command prompt in administrator mode

  • Now exit the command prompt window and launch the Start menu by pressing the Windows key. Type Control Panel in the search bar and launch the app from the search results.

How to find your ip address on windows 11.

Everybody has an internet address. Let's find out what it is.

Quick Links

Understanding external vs. internal ip address, how to find your external ip address, find your local ip address in windows settings, find your ip address using the command prompt, key takeaways.

  • To find your local IP address on Windows 11, open Settings -> Network & Internet -> Your Wi-Fi Network.
  • Under Properties, look for "IPv4 address" to find your local IP address.

Sometimes, you need to know your network IP address while using Windows 11, but it's not obvious how to see what it is. Here are two good ways to quickly find out.

Before seeking out your IP address, it's important to know which kind of IP address you're trying to find. For our purposes, there are two main types of IP address: external and internal.

Related: How to Find Your Private and Public IP Addresses

Your external IP address (also known as your "wide area network" or WAN address) is the address that you present to the outside world while using the internet. It's shared between all the devices on your local network . It's also the IP address that others would use to connect to your computer through the internet.

Your internal IP address (or LAN address) is an address assigned to you by your local router or broadband modem. Using dynamic DNS, many routers automatically assign IP addresses, such as 192.168.1.100, to devices on your local network. This address isn't seen by the outside world and is only used on your local area network (LAN) within your home, school, or business. You can also set up a static IP address on Windows or Linux .

Related: What Is A Wide Area Network (WAN)?

The easiest way to find your external (WAN) IP address is by using a web browser. To do so, open your favorite browser (such as Edge, Chrome, or Firefox) and visit the http://ifconfig.me website.

When the page loads, look under the "Your Connection" section. The number listed beside "IP Address" is your external IP address. For example, it might be something like "55.777.777.222."

Your IP address will be different from the example shown above, of course.

It's safe to use this method because every website sees your IP address whenever you visit it anyway. This particular website just shows that information back to you, which can help with network troubleshooting.

You can also find your external IP address in your router's configuration utility , which is usually accessed through a web browser. To use that, you'll need to consult your particular router or modem's documentation.

To find your local IP address, you can use a few different techniques in Windows 11. One of the easiest ways to do so is by using the Settings app.

To start, first, open Windows Settings by pressing Windows+i on your keyboard. Or, you can search for "settings" in the Start menu and click its app icon. When it opens, click "Network & Internet" in the sidebar.

In Network & Internet settings, you'll see your primary internet connection listed near the top of the window. Click "Properties" beside the network connection name.

On your network connection properties page, scroll down and locate the information section near the bottom. Beside "IPv4 Address," you'll see your local IP address in IPv4 format (such as "192.168.1.90"), and your IPv6 address will be listed just above your IPv4 address.

If you need to share this information with others later, click the "Copy" button beside the network information section, and it will be placed in your Windows Clipboard. You can then paste it as text somewhere else (such as in a message or email) to share it later.

You can also find your local IP address quickly in Windows 11 on the command line . One way to quickly get a command prompt is by right-clicking the Start button and selecting "Windows Terminal" from the list.

When Windows Terminal opens (with either PowerShell or Command Prompt, depending on your preferences), type

on a blank line and hit Enter. This runs Windows 11's built-in command-line network utility.

After running

, you'll see a list of all the network adapters that you have in your machine, including Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections.

Locate a section labeled something similar to "Ethernet adapter Ethernet" or "Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi" that has many entries listed beneath it. You'll find your local IPv4 and IPv6 address listed there under "IPv4 Address" or "Link-local IPv6 Address."

If you need to copy an IP address down, select it with your mouse and press Ctrl+c to copy it to the Clipboard. You can paste it somewhere else later to store or share it. When you're done, close the Windows Terminal window, and you're all set. Good luck!

While you're finding IP addresses, you might be interested in finding the IP address of your Windows 10 PC , iPhone , printer , Roku , Wi-Fi router , or other device . You can also figure out what is listening on a specific TCP/IP port or set up a static TCP/IP route .

How to Set Static IP Address in Windows 11

By: Waseem Patwegar | Filed Under: Windows

While the default option in Windows 11 is to connect to internet using a dynamic IP address, it also provides the option to assign or set static IP address.

Set Static IP Address in Windows 11

Assign Static IP Address in Windows 11

As mentioned above, the default option in Windows 11 is to connect to the network using a dynamic IP address, which is assigned by the router or a combined Modem/Router unit.

Since, the IP address assigned by the router is Dynamic in nature, it changes whenever the DHCP lease expires and it can also change when the modem/router is restarted.

While most users do not find the need to change this setup, setting a static IP address on a Windows 11 computer may be required in certain cases.

For example, services like file/printer sharing and port forwarding are best setup on a static IP address, otherwise they will stop working as soon as the computer acquires a new dynamic IP address.

Hence, we are providing below the steps to assign a static IP address on a Windows 11 computer.

Step #1. – Find Router IP Address

The first step is to note down the IP address of the modem/router ( DHCP Server Address ) and also the Subnet Mask Address .

1. Type Command Prompt in Windows search bar > right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator .

Open Command Prompt As Admin

2. In Command Prompt window, type ipconfig/all and press the Enter key.

IP Config all Command

3. Once the command is executed, scroll down the list of entries to “Wi-Fi” or “Ethernet” section as required and note down Subnet Mask Address and the DHCP Server Address (Router IP Address).

Command Prompt Window

4. Close the Command Prompt window.

Step #2. Assign Static IP Address

After noting down the subnet mask and the router IP address (DHCP Server), you can follow the steps below to set static IP address on your computer.

1. Go to Settings > select Network & internet in the left-pane. In the right-pane, scroll down and click on Advanced network settings .

Advanced Network Settings Option in Windows

2. On the next screen, scroll down to “Related Settings” section and click on More network adapter options.

Open Network Adapter Options in Windows

3. On the next screen, right-click on your active Network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and click on Properties .

Open WiFi Network Properties on Windows PC

4. On the properties screen, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties .

Open IPV4 Properties

5. On IPv4 properties screen, select Use the following IP Address option > Enter Default Gateway (Router IP Address), Subnet Mask Address (As obtained in step 1), type Static IP Address and click on OK .

Change IPV4 Address on Windows PC

As you can see in above image, the first 3 number sets (192.175.0 in this case) in IP address field need to be the same as the default gateway address and you can only change the last number set with any number from 1 to 255.

How to manage network adapter settings on Windows 11

Here are the different ways to manage Wi-Fi and Ethernet network adapters on Windows 11.

Windows 11 manage network settings

Although Windows 11 can detect and configure network adapters automatically, you may still need to perform additional steps to connect to a wireless network, enable specific features, review configurations, and troubleshoot problems.

In previous versions, you needed to use Control Panel to manage various aspects of Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters. However, on Windows 11, you can now configure most of the networking settings and features from the "Network & internet" section. For example, you can now enable or disable network adapters and configure DNS over HTTPS to improve security. It's a lot easier to set a static or dynamic IP address, configure data limits, reset the adapters to fix most problems, and more.

In this Windows 11 guide, you will learn the different ways to manage network adapter settings through the Settings app.

  • (Optional) In the "Alternate DNS" setting, specify the IP version 6 address of the secondary address to use with DNS encryption.
  • Click the Save option.

After you complete the steps, the DNS queries will be sent encrypted over the internet.

Confirm DNS encryption

To confirm if the connection is encrypted, use these steps:

  • In the IPv4 DNS servers property, you should now see the new address and the Encrypted status.

Confirm DOH status

  • In the IPv6 DNS servers property, you should now see the new address and the Encrypted status (if applicable).

Once you complete the steps, if you see the "Encrypted" status, DNS over HTTPS is working as expected.

Wi-Fi connection with DOH

To configure DOH for a wireless connection, use these steps:

  • Click the Hardware properties setting.

Hardware properties

After you complete the steps, the wireless connection will transmit Domain Name System queries using the HTTPS protocol.

Confirm DOH on Wi-Fi

Once you complete the steps, if you see the "Encrypted" label, then it means DoH is working on Windows 11.

If you have a computer providing files, media content, and printers over the work, it should be using a static Transfer Control Protocol Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) configuration instead of a dynamic configuration.

The reason is that a dynamic network configuration assigned by the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server can always change. When they do, other devices in the network won't be able to access the network resources. On the other hand, a static IP configuration doesn't change, allowing the service to be always reachable.

Ethernet static settings

To set a static IP address configuration to an Ethernet adapter, use these steps:

  • Click the Edit button for the "IP assignment" setting.

Ethernet IP assignment

  • In the "IP address" setting, specify the IP version 4 to assign the computer. Quick tip: The IP address should be within the network range, and it should be an address outside of the DHCP scope to avoid possible conflicts. For instance, if the network is in the 10.1.4.0 network and the DHCP assigns an address in the 10.1.4.10 through 10.1.4.100 range, a suitable static address could be 10.1.4.22 .

Windows 11 static IP address

  • In the "Subnet mask" setting, specify the network mask — for example, 255.255.255.0 . Quick note: If you are configuring the settings on a home or office network, the subnet mask is typically 255.255.255.0 . However, it might be different if you are in a business environment.
  • In the "Gateway" setting, specify the gateway address (usually the router address) — for example, 10.1.4.1 .
  • In the "Preferred DNS" setting, specify the network DNS address (usually the router address in home and office networks) – for example, 10.1.2.1 .
  • In the "Preferred DNS encryption" setting, select the Unencrypted only option.
  • (Optional) In the "Alternate DNS" setting, specify a secondary DNS address that will be used in case the system can't find the correct route with the primary address.
  • In the "Alternate DNS encryption" setting, select the Unencrypted only option.

After you complete the steps, the computer will start using the new static network configuration.

Wi-Fi static settings

To configure a static TCP/IP configuration for a wireless adapter, use these steps:

Wi-Fi IP assignment

  • In the "IP address" setting, specify the IP version 4 to assign the computer. For example, 10.1.4.23 .

Wireless set static IP address

  • In the "Subnet mask" setting, specify the network mask — for example, 255.255.255.0 .
  • In the "Preferred DNS" setting, specify the network DNS address (usually the router address in home and office networks) — for example, 10.1.4.1 .

Once you complete the steps, the wireless adapter will start using the new static IP address configuration.

We are focusing this guide on IP version 4, but you can also refer to these steps to set up an IP version 6 configuration if your network supports it. You only need to turn on the IPv6 option on step 7 and provide the IPv6 addresses according to your network configuration.

If you have a computer with a static IP address, you can also change its configuration to allow the device to receive the network settings through the local Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server.

To change the IP address of an Ethernet adapter from static to dynamic, use these steps:

  • Select the Automatic (DHCP) option.

Enable Ethernet dynamic IP

To set a dynamic IP address for a wireless adapter, use these steps:

Windows 11 enable automatic IP configuration

After you complete the steps, the Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter will configure its IP address automatically through its Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server.

Windows 11 also comes with the ability to set data limits for a specific network adapter. As you get closer to the limit, the system will send you a warning to help you stay under your data limit.

To configure data limit on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Under the "More settings" section, click the Data usage setting.

Windows 11 data usage

  • Click the Enter limit button.

Data limit

  • Specify the monthly reset day or days until the data expires.

Data limit settings

  • In the "Data limit" setting, specify the data allowance.
  • Confirm the data unit, including megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB).

Once you complete the steps, Windows 11 will notify you when the limit is getting closer to help you stay under the data limit.

When your laptop or desktop computer has connectivity issues, the reset feature will remove and install all the network adapters and reset all the configurations to their defaults to fix the most common problems.

To reset all the network adapter configurations, use these steps:

  • Click the Network reset setting.

Windows 11 network reset

  • Click the Reset now button.

Windows 11 fix network problems

  • Click the Yes button.

After you complete the steps, the feature will remove and reinstall all the network adapters and will reset all the network configurations to their defaults, hopefully fixing any Ethernet or Wi-Fi problems. If you also had a wireless connection, you may need to re-enter the authentication to connect to the network.

To view data usage per network adapter and apps on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Review the device data usage.

Data Usage Statistics

Once you complete the steps, you will better understand the network data usage on your computer.

On Windows 11, you can find the network configuration information within the adapter's properties or through the Advanced network settings page.

Ethernet properties

To find out the IP address and other network settings of the Ethernet adapter, use these steps:

  • Confirm the networking settings at the bottom of the page.

Ethernet Network Configuration

Wi-Fi properties

To determine the properties of the wireless adapter, use these steps:

Wireless Network Configuration

Ethernet and Wi-Fi properties

To view the network information for the adapters installed on Windows 11, use steps:

  • Click the Hardware and connection properties setting.

Hardware Connection Properties

After you complete the steps, you will be able to determine many networking configurations, such as link speed, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, DNS server, driver version and manufacturer, MAC address, and more.
