David Everhart on 4/29/2019 1:35:50 PM

Review: New control module didn't work at first. Called support and transferred to amp research. Was told to push the wires further into the harness to make it work correctly. Couldn't get wires to go in further, used a grinder and sand paper to remove plastic from the other side and now it works perfect. Be sure you're getting a good connection from the module top the harness if you aren't getting voltage.

Maintenance

How to clean your steps

Cleaning your PowerStep In adverse conditions, debris such as mud, dirt, and salt may become trapped in the running board mechanism, possibly leading to unwanted noise, or binding. Prepare for cleaning Manually set the running boards to deploy: The running boards can me manually set in the deployed position by opening the door, and then place your foot on the step. Leave firm pressure with your foot on the step while you close the door. This will leave your steps in the deployed position. How to maintain your steps: Using a pressure washer to clean the front and rear linkages which are all 4 hinge points for your PowerSteps.  Avoid spraying the motors directly . After washing, apply silicone spray (dry Film lubricant) only, to all 4 linkage arms and all pivot pins, some of these pins will be located up high on the linkage arm as well. Then cycle the door to work the lubrication in to the hinge points. Do not apply silicone, wax, or protectants like Armor All® to the running board. Do not lubricate with any greases, oils, WD-40, or penetrants. This cleaning should be done periodically, or when debris such as mud, dirt or salt becomes trapped in the running board mechanism.

Deployment of PowerSteps

Step is clicking when deploying or retracting

Bolt & Wedge Adjustment

Remove motor from side that is being effected.

Allow step to rest in the fully deployed or down position.

Unscrew ¼ -20x7/8 socket head or gold colored hex cap screw located at the top of the linkage arm in the rear.

Loosen 3-4 turns and strike the head of the bolt with a hammer lightly to push wedge loose from the linkage arm. (note: threaded hole on wedge is not in the center of the wedge.)

Apply light pressure to the running board and reinstall wedge and bolt.

Torque bolt to 12ft lbs.

Re install motor and retest.

If you have any questions or concerns reach out to our technical support team at 1-888-983-2204

My LED lights will not shut off or are not turning on.

Testing LED light voltage

Start by closing all doors on the vehicle

Locate the small 8 pin plug located at your controller. (pic attached labeled override pinning can be used)

Using a DMM (digital multimeter) insert the red lead of your meter into the back of the controller at the red wire.

Insert your black lead into the back of the controller at the black wire.

Set to Volts DC on your meter.

When you open any door your meter should display 12v + or battery voltage and when the door is closed the voltage should go away.

If you are not seeing the voltage effected by the operation of the door proceed to the next step.

Unplug small 8 pin plug from the controller.

Using your multimeter, meter out the pins directly in the controller and run the same test as previous.

If you are seeing that voltage is staying constant no matter if you open or close any door you may be experiencing an issue with the controller.

If you are receiving voltage when you open the door and it goes away when you close the door you may be experiencing an issue in the harness or with your LED lights.

How do I replace a clutch gear or drive shaft?

Click here for the Clutch Gear Change

Disconnected the vehicles battery and my steps no longer deploy or retract.

If you are experiencing this issue, you may have a component in the system that received a spike in voltage. If you believe you may be experiencing this issue, follow the steps below:

Controller Reset:

Locate Amp Research Controller under the hood. The controller will have a red wire going from the red + terminal of the battery directly to the controller.

Locate fuse holder on red wire going to the controller.

Remove the 30/40-amp fuse to the system.

Verify both locking clips are fully locked into the controller.

Push each one of the wires individually deep into the controller.

Let the system sit for 5 minutes.

Reinstall the fuse into the controller and retest.

If your issue is not resolved proceed to the next step.

Controller vs. OBDII Failure:

Complete controller reset procedure before performing this test.

Locate OBDII module plug under dash. This will be plugged in to the vehicles diagnostic port and look like the image below:

Follow black pigtail off side of plug till it splits in to 2 purple wires. (Note: One is purple, and one is purple/black stripe)

Disconnect purple and purple/black stripe wires from splice point under dash.

Put OBDII plug to the side it will not be used.

Locate a solid chassis ground location in the vehicle. (Note: Chassis ground locations can be found on any non-painted bare metal location in the vehicle. If one cannot be found, then a jumper wire from the “- “or black terminal of the battery can also be used)

Ground both purple wires to chassis ground location. This can be performed with both wires at the same time or each wire individually. These are our trigger wires, one driver and one passenger.

When chassis ground is applied to wires it will deploy the step and when ground is removed it will retract the step.

If you are experiencing no deployment and lights for steps are not illuminating you may have a controller failure.

If steps start to deploy and retract when ground is applied and removed, then you may have an OBDII failure.

I believe my motor has failed.

If you believe you are experiencing an issue with a motor that has failed, follow the steps below:

Testing Power to Motor:

(Note: You will need a digital multimeter to perform this test)

Locate the plug at the motor.

Remove plug from the motor.

Using a digital multimeter set meter to volts DC (symbol below)

Insert the red lead of the multimeter into the orange wire black lead into the white wire of the motor plug. (Note: One side of the vehicle will have a solid orange and solid white wire and the other will have orange/black stripe and white/black stripe. If you are not able to remove the plug pierce the wire with DMM lead to complete test)

With multimeter visible open the door on the side of the vehicle the motor we are testing is located.

The meter should display battery voltage for 5 seconds and return to zero. (Note: To check for battery voltage touch red and black lead of meter directly to red and black posts of battery under the same volts DC setting on meter)

Close door and meter should display -battery voltage for 5 seconds and return to zero. (Note: It doesn’t matter if you display “- “or “+” voltage during door open or door close operation just that we are getting voltage for 5 seconds before returning to zero)

If you receive voltage for less than 5 seconds or only in one direction, we may have an issue with the controller.

If test shows accurate voltage readings, then we may be experiencing binding in the linkage or an issue with the motor.

If you want to confirm you are having an issue with your motor, simply switch the motors from side to side and see if the issue follows the motor. (Note: This step will only work if one side has failed, and the other side is working)

If both sides have failed, you can unplug the motor and manually put 12v power+ and ground- to each of the pins on the motor to check if it will move. One contact gets positive+ and the other gets a ground- and the motor moves one way, then you switch the configuration, and the motor will spin the other.

One or both PowerSteps will not deploy/retract.

If you are experiencing this issue, it may be originating from a few possible areas. Follow the steps below to help isolate where the failure may be coming from:

If your issue is not resolved, please proceed to the next step.

PowerSteps are no longer deploying or retracting.

If your steps are no longer deploying or retracting and the LED lights for the steps no longer light up, you may be experiencing an issue with your controller or OBDII module plug if the kit is a plug and play.

Follow the steps below to help identify where the issue may be coming from:

Disconnect purple and purple/black stripe wires from splice point under dash

Put OBDII plug to the side it will not be used

If steps start to deploy and retract when ground is applied and removed, then you may have in OBDII failure.

Testing for binding in linkages

If you believe you are experiencing an issue with binding or seized linkages follow the steps below to test:

Clean PowerSteps following the cleaning procedure shown below:

Remove motor to the PowerStep.

The step will rest in the down position after the motor has been removed so use caution.

From the center of the board, move the step to the fully retracted position remaining cautious of any resistance in the linkage arms.

From the retracted position, keeping legs at a safe distance release board.

The board should return to the fully deployed position quickly.

If any resistance is felt in the linkages when putting the boards in the fully retracted position or if the board falls to the fully deployed position slowly then proceed to the next step.

Remove board from linkage arms.

Individually put each linkage up and down and feel for resistance or binding.

If you feel resistance or experience binding, then that linkage may need to be replaced.

If you are unsure if you are experiencing resistance or binding and you are only experiencing this on one side, then remove the board on the working side and run the same test on the other side.

Using a stopwatch, time both sides to verify that the linkages are dropping at a similar rate of speed consistently.

New 22-23 GM 1500 Refresh / 21-23 GM SUV OBDII Wiring Locations (excludes new Escalade)

When having to wire in the blue and white wire to the vehicles BCM in the driver side kick panel, you will need to make sure we are wired into the locations shown in the photos below.

If you plan to unplug the BCM plug from the BCM to make your connections make sure you have first disconnected the battery.

After making connections, if you are experiencing only the back doors are deploying the step check your connection for the white wire in the green plug. There are 2 of the same color wire in this plug and you may be experiencing a connection issue, or you may be tapping into the incorrect wire location.

After making connections, if you are experiencing only the Front doors are deploying the step check your connection for the blue wire in the grey plug. You may be experiencing a connection issue, or you may be tapping into the incorrect wire location.

Kit # 75113-01A Silverado 1500 Extended Cab mounting Issues

Steps retract, but do not deploy; Kit# 76239-01A/77239-01A/78239-01A/76243-01A; Fits 18-22 Ram 1500-3500, 1500 Classic; All Cabs

If you are experiencing this issue, it most likely has to do with an incorrectly placed can bus connection.

Locate the blue and white wire at the OBDII plug supplied by Amp Research.

Verify that the connector at the end of the blue and white wires is plugged into the Green, double row can bus port located up high in the dash.

The recommended port is in the lower left-hand corner of the dual row receptacle.

If the lower left-hand port is already occupied, connect to the first available open port from the bottom in the dual row Green receptacle. Photo below:

Front idler linkage is sagging when retracted; Kit# 76140-01A; Fits 19-22 Ranger/Bronco

If you are experiencing this issue, it is most likely needs to be adjusted.

Start by following the torque procedure below:

If you are still experiencing issues move to the next step and perform the adjustment below.

If everything is tight deploy the step, loosen the rear mounting points at the body. Remove the bolts and break the board free from the front linkage. Lift the board off the lower mount about 2”. While holding the board up tighten the body mounts. Reinstall board to front lower mount and retest.

Unable to mount front motor linkage to front mounting location, pointing towards front wheel; Kit# 75122-01A/77122-01A/78122-01A/75132-01A/77132-01A/78132-01A/75135-01A/77135-01A/78135-01A: Fits Wrangler JKU/JL, Gladiator

If you are experiencing this issue, it is most likely due to not mounting to the correct mounting location.

Front linkage should be mounted to the mounting location to the rear of the front door similar to the illustration shown below.

Please refer to instructions for more detail.

If you have any questions or concerns reach out to our technical support team at 1-888-983-2204 Mon-Fri 7:00am – 5:00pm PST

Steps retract, but one or both steps are sagging in the front; Kit# 76254-01A Fits 19-21 Slv/Sra 1500,22 LTD/Lmtd, 20-22 Slv/Sra HD, Db/Cw

If you are experiencing this, then the rear motor linkage mounting location needs to be adjusted.

Crew cabs should be mounted to the mounting location 16” from the back of the cab.

If you have confirmed that you are mounted to 16” to the back of the cab and you are having the same issue, then move the linkage to the 33” from the back of the cab mounting location and retest.

Kit has been installed but my steps are working in reverse; Kit# 76254-01A, 77254-01A - Fits 19-21 Slv/Sra 1500, 20-22 Slv/Sra 2500/3500, Crw Cb

If you are experiencing this issue it is most likely caused by having the rear motor linkages on the wrong side of the vehicle. Look at your instructions to verify.

The driver and passenger side rear motor linkages should have the motor mounted on the side of the linkage facing the front tire. If the motor is on the side of the linkage closest to the rear tire, then the entire rear motor linkage arms will need to swap sides. Driver to passenger and passenger to driver.

Acoustic Research Integrated Amplifiers

Acoustic Research A-03

My recently purchased AR Amplifier (with the wooden cover) is overhauled and sounds more than fantastic! Really wonderful: very complete soundstage overall and a tight punchy bass. Phono stage is very well built. Any Japanese brand amplifier has to leave the building... I think the sound character is comparable to old vintage The Fisher amps (TX-2000 for instance) but I prefer this AR Amp. The ultimate vintage sound you want.

Have this on my bench for cleaning and check out. It sounds very nice consisting it's age (almost 50), but it does have that vintage sound, a little soft & tubey, slightly colored midrange. There are four large electrolytic caps that are bulging and should be replaced, I'm sure this is the source of the 'vintage' sound. Has anyone found a good source for replacement caps? I'll need to get a solid parts estimate before I can economically justify offering the service to the customer.

I am rating this amp as a nine for this reason: regardless of any source I had at the time, it never failed to deliver an exciting, unbridled sound that really surprised owners — friends and fellow audio-fans — who owned much more expensive and more modern equipment. About 12 years ago, before shipping it to Japan where I was working, a friend who had a then recent edition of the NAD amp agreed to to have a shoot-out.The unit had been idle for so long I was reluctant to power it up, let alone let it fly. Nevertheless, we ran these little beasts to the tits. In the end we agreed it was a draw. One amp had this and the other had that. And even then, it was close. CODA: not bad for an amp that had not been powered up for a decade ... and had performed for thousands of hours with no service or even a dusting. This music machine was not dummied down for the zombie masses of consumers. It proceeded that era. Like the NAD, it's a balls out, no-prisoners-taken instrument for nasty hard rock, but at the same time, the AR will move your heart to your mouth when rendering a baroque opera. I am not sure about the NAD, but that was years ago. I still have this amp and plan on restoring it to its true place in audio glory. That's why it is a NINE. Ten? Well ... it earns points for shear guts and superior engineering. I've listened to systems costing vast fortunes more, but his little machine has delivered more passion than most of the boutique systems costing a galactic amount of money more than I paid for this classic instrument. There was a time when as a poor student I had the AR, a Dynaco FM-3 and the CBC-FM as a source — all I needed, and always a to-the-bone, passionate experience. Cheers — Thol

A doctor points to PET scan results that are part of a previous study on Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists claim to have found another distinct genetic form of Alzheimer’s

Study suggests almost everyone with two copies of genetic variant ApoE4 goes on to develop disease

Having two copies of a gene variant known to predispose people to Alzheimer’s could in fact represent a distinct genetic form of the disease, researchers have said.

The variant, known as ApoE4, has long been known to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, with two copies conferring greater risk than one.

Now research has revealed almost everyone with two copies of the variant goes on to develop Alzheimer’s disease (AD), suggesting it is not only a risk factor but a cause.

“Over 95% of the individuals [with two copies of ApoE4], have AD pathology either in the brain or in the biomarkers that we analysed,” said Dr Juan Fortea, the co-author of the research from the Sant Pau hospital in Barcelona.

His team said the predicability of the age at which symptoms began was similar to other genetic forms of the disease such as autosomal-dominant Alzheimer’s disease (ADAD) and Alzheimer’s disease in Down syndrome (DSAD).

Dr Victor Montal, a co-author from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, said the research had catalysed a paradigm shift in the understanding of the disease.

“Whereas previously, the etiology of dementia was known in less than 1% of cases, our work has now enabled the identification of causative factors in over 15% of instances,” he said.

However, the study did not shed light on the risk of developing dementia itself for people with two copies of ApoE4.

Writing in the journal Nature Medicine , the researchers reported how postmortem results from 3,297 brain donors revealed nearly all of the 273 donors with two copies of ApoE4 showed signs of Alzheimer’s in the brain.

The researchers also analysed clinical data from more than 10,000 people, revealing that by the age of 65, almost all of the 519 people with two copies of ApoE4 had abnormal levels of a protein involved in Alzheimer’s, known as amyloid beta, in their cerebrospinal fluid, and 75% had positive amyloid scans. The prevalence of biomarkers for the disease also increased with age.

The team added that the age of symptom onset was about seven to 10 years earlier in people with two copies of ApoE4, at about 65 years, compared with those without the variant.

The researchers said that with approximately 2% of the general population thought to have two copies of ApoE4, this form of Alzheimer’s constituted one of the most frequently occurring diseases that was down to alterations in just one gene.

However, with much of the data gathered from people with European ancestry, further work is needed to explore whether the findings hold in people of different ethnicities.

Prof Reisa Sperling, a co-author of the study from Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston, US, said while concerns had been raised about using Alzheimer’s drugs such as lecanemab in people with two copies of ApoE4, the new work flagged the importance of further research in the area, as well as around other approaches for treatment and prevention in such individuals.

Writing in an associated opinion piece, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco and the city’s Gladstone Institutes, said that defining having two copies of ApoE4 as a distinct genetic form of Alzheimer’s disease had important consequences, from allowing those affected to receive support through educational and counselling programmes, to prompting new avenues of research, including targeted drug-development. They added that it could also lead to changes in the diagnosis and management of the disease and influence the way clinical trials are designed.

Not everyone agreed with the conclusions of the study. “I do not see anything in this paper to justify the claim that carrying two copies of ApoE4 represents some ‘distinct genetic form’ of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Prof David Curtis, an honorary professor at the University College London’s Genetics Institute.

“No matter how many [copies] of ApoE4 one carries the underlying disease processes seem similar across cases of Alzheimer’s disease, suggesting that any effective treatment and prevention strategies, which have yet to be developed, would have broad applicability,” he added.

Which is better for your dog, kibble or raw meat? Research yields surprising health results

In recent years, the practice of feeding dogs raw meat-based diets instead of kibble has grown, in part because raw meat does not require heavy processing or include binders and preservatives that could negatively affect a dog's health.

Common advice for humans is that a diet rich in unprocessed plant-based foods is best. Among its health advantages are anti-inflammatory benefits that promote heart and gut health, and a lower risk of diseases, including cancer.

Similarly, some proponents of raw meat -based diets for dogs believe that such regimens reduce the risk of gut health issues, support better dental health, and protect against inflammatory conditions. Nowadays, ads promoting the practice of feeding fresh and raw food diets to dogs are ubiquitous in print and media.

But some veterinarians caution against raw pet food diets. Raw food can contain bacteria that may cause diseases in pets who consume the food, as well as in humans who handle and prepare it. Studies have documented that such bacteria may be resistant to antibiotics. Additionally, raw food diets created by pet owners may be nutritionally imbalanced; a 2022 study found nutrition deficiencies in over 90% of dogs on a raw meat-based diet within its study group .

With such considerations as a background, a U.S. research team from Oklahoma State University and the University of Florida has conducted the first study to evaluate how canine feeding regimens might affect anti-inflammatory markers in the gut. Their work appears in Frontiers in Veterinary Science .

Within cells, metabolites are small molecules (those of low molecular weight) that are responsible for metabolism and cellular function, maintenance, and growth; these comprise a cell's metabolome. Food intake is among many factors that affect metabolism, and through metabolomic profile screens, researchers can test generally for inflammatory disease.

The researchers of this new study compared inflammation in dogs fed kibble-based diets (KD) vs. raw meat-based diets (RMBD). The paper states, "We hypothesized that dogs fed RMBD would have alterations in their microbiota and metabolome that correlated with changes in fecal and systemic inflammatory markers."

The study population included 55 clinically healthy adult dogs, all weighing more than 9 kg, who had been either fed a kibble-based (n = 27) or raw meat-based (n = 28) diet for longer than one year, according to their owners. Because many owners reported occasionally offering their dogs human food, leftovers, and dog treats, the researchers placed both groups on restricted diets for 28 days before beginning their testing; "either a single brand of kibble (Purina Pro Plan Savor) or RMBD (Titan Blue, Ross Wells) and a single ingredient treat," the study explains.

The research notes that starch comprised approximately one-third of the KD group's food consumption, while starch represented less than 1% of what the RMBD group consumed due to an absence of dietary plant sources. However, each group ate similar amounts of protein; 3.6 g/kg bwt/day for the RMBD group and 3.2 g/kg bwt/day for the KD group.

The dogs remained with their owners for the duration of the study, and the owners recorded the dogs' weekly food consumption, with instructions to report any deviation from the prescribed study diets. On day 28, the dogs returned to the lab for physical examination and collection of blood and stool samples.

The team found similar inflammatory markers—including serum metabolites specific to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions—in the blood samples of both groups, but significantly different results in the two groups' intestinal inflammatory markers. They also observed differences between the groups' metabolomes and fecal microbiota.

In the RMBD dogs, the researchers found higher levels of fecal IgA (a mucosal antibody that protects against infection), IgG (an antibody that protects the immune system against previously encountered bacteria and viruses), and IAP (another gut-protecting antibody).

"We theorize these increases in RMBD fed dogs may reflect improved gastrointestinal homeostasis and immune function as well as increased feed digestibility," they write.

However, they were unable to determine whether the observed differences were beneficial or not, due to the study's short duration and inclusion of only healthy dogs. They had expected to find a parallel between the differing fecal inflammatory marker results and systemic inflammatory marker results, but did not, and suggest that this could result from a low level of biomarker sensitivity.

As next steps, the researchers suggest that larger studies of longer duration, including more sensitive markers—functional assays—might shed more light on the effects of the two diets. They also note that with respect to intestinal inflammation, a study design exposing the same dogs to both diets could reveal the effects of each.

Interlayer phenomena, revealed by high‐voltage electron microscopy (HVEM) and high‐resolution electron microscopy (HREM), are presented as they occur in various SiC(Nicalon) fibre‐reinforced Duran glass composites (differing in the specific sol‐gel supported production processes). Their dependence on the production parameters and their influence on the materials properties are discussed, taking into account the results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) in situ tensile tests.

Besides graphitic carbon, textured to a variable degree and influencing the tensile behaviour, oxycarbide formation is indicated.

A reactive matrix additive, such as, e.g. TiO 2 , resulted in a decrease in strength and a brittle behaviour, while the addition of ZrO 2 markedly improves the mechanical properties.
