Applicant Requirements

To apply to the GSSW doctoral program, you must have  one  of the following:

  • a master's degree conferred by a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
  • a master's degree in one of the social sciences and demonstrated evidence of substantial professional experience in the social work field

In addition, you must have:

  • a clear interest in developing advanced theory, policy and research skills in a substantive area relevant to the field of social work
  • a superior academic record in all previous work
  • the maturity, intellectual ability and readiness for advanced study

NOTE: the GRE is no longer required for admission into the PhD program. 

Two years of post-master's practice experience is strongly preferred, but not mandatory.

It is important to have proficiency in descriptive and inferential statistics. This knowledge is necessary for several of the required doctoral courses. An introductory course in statistical analysis and inference is available in the first quarter of study if needed.

The application for the fall 2025 PhD in Social Work Program will be available in August 2024.

PhD Application Instructions

You may submit unofficial transcripts for an initial review of your application. If admitted, you must provide official transcripts from all institutions attended before GSSW orientation day.

Many schools issue transcripts electronically, either through their own web services or through vendors. If this option is available through the institutions you attended, request that your transcript(s) be sent to  [email protected] .

  • Name, mailing address and other current contact information
  • Areas of special interest

  • Continuing Education: List the continuing education experience that you have.
  • Paid Employment History: List your paid work experiences in chronological order, beginning with the most recent. For each position held, please provide the name of employer, location, beginning and ending dates, and a brief job description.
  • Volunteer Experiences: List your volunteer social work or human services experiences in chronological order, beginning with the most recent. Please provide the name of each agency or organization, its location, beginning and ending dates, and a brief description of your responsibilities and activities.
  • Honors and Awards: Identify any academic honors or awards that you received.
  • Professional Affiliations/Licensure: List any professional associations of which you are a member and any advanced certification(s) you received.
  • Research and Evaluation Experiences: List your research and evaluation experiences, including a description of your position, beginning and ending dates, and responsibilities.
  • Teaching Experiences: List all courses you taught; include the course title, level, beginning and ending dates, a brief course description and the educational institution at which it was taught.
  • Paper Presentations at Conferences: List the titles of papers you presented at national, state or other conferences over the last five years; include the date, conference sponsor and any co-authors or co-presenters.
  • Publications: List publications on which you are listed as an author, including journal articles, books, book chapters, technical reports, magazine or newsletter articles, contract or grant applications and program manuals. Please follow the style guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Sixth Edition).

You are required to submit three letters of recommendation, preferably from academic, research or professional supervisors/colleagues.

The PhD Admission Committee considers your Statement of Professional and Educational Intent to be a significant part of your application. Respond openly and honestly to each section. The average statement length is seven pages. Double space your statement and put your name in the upper right corner of each page. The statement must be written solely by you without the use of an editor.

Your statement should include the following elements:

  • Discuss your qualifications and readiness for pursuing doctoral studies in social work.
  • Describe the area(s) of knowledge around which you wish to concentrate your study and research.
  • Explain the social justice importance of your area of interest. In other words, how do power, privilege and oppression contribute to dynamics in your area of interest?
  • How does your personal, professional, or practice experience inform the area in which you plan to conduct research?
  • Describe any cultural, economic, or social challenges and opportunities that influence your lens and perspective in research.
  • Describe the professional or academic position you plan to pursue after your PhD and why you have chosen that career goal.
  • Explain why you feel this program would be a good match for you.
  • Identify any projects at GSSW, or at the University of Denver, in which you have an interest.
  • Discuss any other factors you feel are important in our evaluation of your application.

A PhD in Social Work is a mark of distinction as an expert in the discipline. What Can I Do with a PhD in Social Work?

Many who pursue a PhD in Social Work do so in hopes of securing a faculty position at a university or junior college. They wish to continue conducting research in their area of interest within the field or teach up-and-coming social work students. Others may find employment at think tanks, non-profits, or governmental agencies.

PhD in Social Work Salary and Career Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor includes postsecondary social work teachers on its list of Bright Outlook Occupations because of the job’s rapid growth prospects (9%) over the next decade (2020-2030). 9  Projections are not a guarantee, but the information is encouraging to PhDs looking to go in that direction.

While the mean annual wage for social work professors is $71,570, possibilities exist to earn substantially more. In California, for instance, the mean annual wage stands at $110,020. New York, the state with the highest concentration of postsecondary social work teachers, posts a mean annual wage of $91,680. 7

Some PhDs find employment as social service consultants. They train social service staff members and help organizations implement improvements in procedures and policies. According to PayScale, this type of position brings in an average hourly rate of $32.50. 8

Students in PhD programs usually enter possessing an MSW (Master’s of Social Work) and a social work license. After earning their doctorate, some individuals decide to return to careers in applied social work rather than enter academia. Accreditation

Opportunities exist to pursue doctoral studies in social work online. The majority of such programs lead to a DSW, but some result in a PhD.

Higher education opportunities in social work

Those who seek to improve the lives of others and inspire social change in their communities often pursue careers in social work. But while a master’s in social work is often considered a terminal degree (meaning one can independently practice with that degree) there are two additional degree options for those seeking additional career advancement and opportunities at the top of the profession: a doctor of social work (DSW) or a PhD in social work.

Both DSW and PhD in social work degrees are excellent credentials that provide further specialization and advanced knowledge in social work that can benefit your career and personal growth. These degrees are also often accompanied by wage increases to reflect your enhanced expertise and work experience. 

The primary difference between the degrees is the desired career trajectory: a DSW is considered an advanced clinical practice degree and is best suited for those who want to work directly with clients or lead social service agencies. A PhD is an academic degree and is best suited for those interested in teaching and research at the undergraduate and graduate level. 

Doctor of social work (DSW) degree overview

A DSW degree is ideal if you want additional expertise in order to continue working with clients, as the DSW is considered to be an advanced professional practice degree. Clients can be individuals as in those seeking individual therapy (micro level practice), community groups and organizations (mezzo level practice), or even government officials or others creating, influencing and implementing policies and laws (macro level practice). The DSW degree prepares graduates for management and other leadership roles and advanced clinical practice in a specific area of social work, such as medical social work, addictions, or juvenile justice.

Social work PhD overview

If you are interested in designing and conducting research, a PhD is an excellent option to consider.  You’ll concentrate your studies and research to become an expert in one particular area of interest.  Similarly, if you are excited by the prospect of teaching and training the next generation of social workers, a PhD program prepares you to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  

While most PhD’s work in academia, this is not a requirement. Some may open consulting or research firms, others work in think tanks or international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), while others become speakers or authors. The PhD provides a rigorous academic background to prepare graduates for researching, writing and teaching about their area of expertise. This may be promoting resilience in foster care youth, assessing and improving telehealth/virtual therapy interventions for adolescents with substance use disorder, or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in female veterans.

Similarities and differences between social work DSW and social work PhD programs 

Similarities.

Both PhD and DSW programs have similar admissions requirements. You must have a master’s degree, preferably in social work. Sometimes programs will accept applicants with other graduate degrees but may require additional social work foundation courses as a requirement prior to graduation. 

You’ll need a GPA of at least 3.0 in order to be considered for admission to either type of program. Letters of recommendation are needed from previous employers and/or graduate school professors who can attest to your ability to handle the level of rigorous coursework a doctoral program requires. At least one written essay is required, describing your area of interest, your career goals and how the selected degree program will help you achieve those goals. Some schools require graduate record examination (GRE) scores as well. If you’re an international student, you’ll need to take and submit your scores for the TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language.

While both degree programs prefer that applicants have post-master’s work experience, this is not always a requirement. Some schools have joint MSW/PhD program tracks, wherein a student immediately enters the PhD program upon completion of the MSW courses. However, many DSW programs require that applicants have at least three or more years of social work experience before returning to school for the doctoral degree. Indeed, a number of students have a decade or more of experience in the field before pursuing their DSW.

The tuition you can expect for a campus-based social work doctoral degree depends on several factors. For instance, the cost per credit will affect your overall tuition expenses more than any other factor and can vary both from school to school and whether or not you are attending from out of state. Out-of-state credits usually cost more than in-state credits.

Furthermore, you have to consider the time it’ll take you to complete your Ph.D. program. Certain costs, like general technology fees or student housing expenses will continue to accumulate the longer you take to finish the program. Programs that can be completed more quickly will necessarily be cheaper in the long run unless the savings are offset by extremely high costs per credit.

US News and World Report indicates that doctoral programs in social work usually range between $915 per credit hour to $1730 per credit hour. Thus, most students can expect to pay between $38,000 and $90,000 in total tuition for their doctoral degrees. 

Time to completion

Both DSW and PhD programs have an average of two years of coursework to complete. The final research project for each program can take anywhere from one to four additional years, though this is dependent on a number of factors. On average, most DSW and PhD students complete their degrees within four years. 

Differences

Courses offered

Both types of programs can offer similar foundational courses covering social work theory, research methods and policy. DSW programs then offer specialized courses depending on the track or concentration that the student has selected. For example, if you’re in an advanced clinical practice track you may study psychopathology, pharmacology, and trauma-informed therapeutic interventions. If you are focusing on leadership and administration, you may study program evaluation, financial management of nonprofit organizations and trauma-informed leadership practices.

In contrast, PhD students will have additional courses in statistical analysis, research study design, writing for publication and teaching methods. Within the courses, you can tailor papers and projects to the area of specialization that you have selected and around which your dissertation research will be based.

Licensing requirements

As previously mentioned, some DSW programs require applicants to have a certain number of years of experience in the field prior to entering the degree program. Some even insist that applicants are Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) meaning they have completed the examination and practice hours required to be licensed by their state.  PhD programs do not have this requirement.

Program structure

The structure of the program is another big difference in DSW and PhD programs. Most DSW programs are designed to be completed by working professionals, so classes are offered in the evenings, on weekends or online. This allows students to continue gaining valuable practice experience while also applying topics taught in classes to real world scenarios they are facing in their daily work. Conversely, the majority of PhD courses are offered during the workday and are taught in-person. While this may be slowly changing, few courses are offered online, and relatively few students work full time while completing a PhD program.

Financial assistance

PhD programs are more likely to have fellowships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships for their students. As social work faculty are awarded grant monies, they will often hire doctoral students as assistants to help reduce their workload while also providing valuable hands-on research experience for the student.  PhD students can also offset some of their tuition costs if hired as a teaching assistant. This provides the opportunity to build critical teaching skills while being mentored by a more experienced professor.  Some DSW programs do offer scholarships and other financial assistance packages, but this is much more common in PhD programs. 

Capstone versus dissertation

Finally, the required final project often differs between PhD and DSW degree programs, though this is not always the case. A dissertation is required by PhD programs. The dissertation is the culmination of a unique research project designed by the student, implemented, the data analyzed, and a report written in a standardized format. This may be in the form of one large report or broken down into three articles that are ready to submit to academic journals for publication depending on the program requirements. 

In contrast, DSW programs typically have students complete a capstone project as their final project. This too, is a research project or program evaluation, but on a smaller scale. The capstone project is much shorter, similar to a thesis. A capstone paper runs approximately 30 pages long and while it still has some of the same sections as a dissertation, including a literature review/ statement of the problem, a research component, data analysis and summary, it is not as detailed nor as in depth as a dissertation.

Career outlook for doctoral level social work graduates

Your potential earnings with a social work PhD can vary dramatically depending on your profession, especially as most social work professions don’t require a PhD.

Master’s level social workers earn an average salary of around $52,000 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, with a Ph.D. or DSW, you’ll be able to command a higher salary. According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), PhD and DSW degree holders earn $20,000 to $25,000 more per year than MSW level social workers, and may earn well over $100,000 per year.  In fact, some tenured professors with a PhD can earn well over $175,000 a year. 

In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there will be a 13 percent job growth rate over the next 10 years, meaning there should be plenty of jobs available for future graduates.

How do you decide what degree program is best for you? Below are some items to consider:

  • What are your career goals? Do you want to open up your own nonprofit organization or become a director of a large agency? Then a DSW is a better fit for you. If you want to conduct research and teach social work students, then consider a PhD program.
  • What areas of concentration or specialization does the program offer? This may be of more importance when selecting a PhD program. Does the program have faculty studying a similar or closely related area of interest that you’d like to focus on? If so, this means more opportunities for mentorship and guidance. If you select a program and want to study a specific topic or population that no one on the faculty has experience with, it may be a frustrating or less rewarding experience for you, by not having a closely aligned mentor. This may also limit your networking opportunities with similarly inclined colleagues.
  • Finally, practical considerations are also necessary. Is the program local or would it require you to move, and how does that impact the total costs involved with completing the program? How would a move impact your family? Do you have the time and energy available to devote to doctoral studies? Do you have a strong support system to assist you? Do you have the financial resources to pursue full time education if you are unable to continue working?

PhD and DSW degrees provide specialized education and training for social workers wanting to reach the pinnacle of their fields. The Doctor of Philosophy degree requires a minimum of 51 hours of course work plus 9 hours of dissertation and is designed to prepare academic and professional leaders in social work.  The course work schedule is sensitive to the professional demands of adult learners, making it possible for students to remain in their current location and employment, if they choose to do so. The main goal guiding the curriculum of this innovative program is to develop leaders and educators who can lead visionary social work education or service programs and conduct original research addressing the complex social issues of our world. The program provides a distinct focus on the integration of religion and faith with the ethics, values, and practices of the social work profession.

The Online Program Design

The curriculum is designed to be taught primarily in an online classroom using high definition videoconferencing technology. Each cohort of students will begin classes in May to early June with a required four- to five-day session on campus in Waco, Texas, to enable students and faculty to get to know each other and to introduce the coursework of the program. Throughout the program students will attend classes in a synchronous-format, online classroom on a weekly basis. Classes will meet on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. CST.

Admission to Doctoral Program

Admission to the Graduate School of Baylor University and the PhD program in Social Work is conducted by formal application. Students are admitted every other year through a highly selective admissions process. The committee selects students who have a clear interest in developing theory, policy, and research skills in a substantive area relevant to the field of social work, a superior academic record in all previous work, and maturity, intellectual ability, and readiness for doctoral study. The doctoral committee will specifically look at the critical factors below that are deemed important for success in graduate studies. Documents with information about these factors are part of the application process.

Admissions Process

All applicants must submit an application fee to the Graduate School. Options for submitting payment will be presented when you submit your online application. When the electronic application is submitted, an email is immediately sent to the applicant with instructions about paying the application fee.

The following items must be submitted/completed as part of your online application to the Baylor University Graduate School:

  • Applicants must complete the exam with an earned grade of B or better. There are modules that can be used as a refresher for students prior to taking the exam. The modules and exam are free for students.
  • A passing grade on the statistics exam is required in order for an application to be considered complete.
  • The GRE is not required.
  • Explains your motivation for and expectations of doctoral education in social work
  • Includes particular assets that you would bring to the school and to the profession as well as areas in which you would most like to grow academically and professionally
  • Specifies your areas of academic and research interests
  • Describes briefly your understanding of integration of faith and ethical social work practice, supported by existing literature
  • Demonstrates scholarship potential
  • Published article, book chapter, or excerpt from a published work
  • Unpublished research report
  • A paper written in a graduate level course
  • Grant application that includes significant reflective writing
  • Policy analysis
  • A 7-10 page paper on a topic of interest to the applicant that is written specifically as the writing sample for the application.

Degree Bearing Transcripts from Previously Attended Universities A Master of Social Work from a CSWE accredited program is preferred but not required. Applicants without an MSW will be considered if they have exceptionally strong credentials, a master's degree in a related field, and experience working in social service settings. Exceptions may also be made for applicants from countries without university accreditation but with exceptionally strong credentials. The Graduate School requires applicants to submit transcripts from every institution which has granted a bachelor's degree and higher. Transcripts should indicate the degree granted. If the transcript does not list the degree and date conferred, applicants must also submit a proof of degree (certificate, diploma, etc.).

Three letters of recommendation At least two references should come from academic faculty who can attest to the applicant’s superior ability and potential. A third reference should come from a supervisor, director, or someone that could provide insight into the applicant’s ability and achievement in social work to date.

  • English proficiency exam (foreign national and permanent resident applicants) English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Scores are valid for two years from the time the test is taken.

Upon review of all the information, faculty teaching in the PhD program may contact prospective students for a personal interview. This interview will be of sufficient length to allow the applicant as well as the faculty to make an informed decision about admission.

Faith in Practice

Students can complete their electives at any point in the program of study.  Students will be required to take one elective course which focuses on enhancing their research skills (statistics or methods).  The PhD Program Director must approve all electives.

Candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy degree must present an acceptable dissertation on a problem in the field of their major subject. The dissertation must give evidence that the candidate has pursued a program of research, the results of which reveal scholarly competence and a significant contribution to knowledge.

The PhD Dissertation will focus on a single cohesive theme, consist of one document, and have a single defense. The dissertation document consists of five chapters: an introductory chapter, three publishable articles, and a final chapter that integrates the document into a coherent whole. Each article must include a substantive review of the literature, and one of the articles may be a Systematic Research Synthesis of the literature. Two articles will incorporate data from the student’s research with one article using findings from quantitative analysis and the other findings from qualitative analysis. The final article can be a theoretical or an additional research article.

The Pre-Doc Exploratory Option allows prospective doctoral students to test their interest in and commitment to doctoral education. The program provides students with the time to gain the information and experience needed to make an informed decision about formal application to the program. This option permits qualified students to enroll in up to three of the school’s regular Ph.D. foundation courses and to complete up to 9 credit hours of doctoral course work before deciding to apply formally to the program. If a student later applies and is accepted to the regular Ph.D. program, credits earned during the pre-doc phase will automatically apply toward the Ph.D. degree.

Participation in the Pre-Doc Exploratory Option does not guarantee acceptance into the PhD program. It does, however, provide a unique opportunity for students to explore that possibility. Courses counted toward the PhD degree must be completed within seven years of passing the required qualification examination.

Applicants to the Pre-Doc Exploratory Option should have earned master’s degree in social work or a related field. Admission to the PreDoc Option is based on evaluation of:

  • An online application
  • A professional resume
  • Official copies of all baccalaureate-and master’s- level transcripts. A graduate grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is preferred.
  • At least one letter of reference
  • A sample of scholarly writing
  • A 500-word written statement that outlines the applicant’s reasons for seeking enrollment in the Pre-Doc Exploratory Option

Applications for the Fall semester should be submitted by April 1st. PhD Students enrolled in the Pre-Doc Exploratory Option are strongly encouraged to complete S 718 and S 721 as part of their program of studies. The following is a list of other S 700 level courses:

All applicants to the PhD program must have a master’s degree in social work or a related field. Admission to the PhD program is based on evaluations of

  • an online application
  • a professional resume
  • undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  • three letters of reference
  • an example of the applicant’s scholarly writing
  • a 750-word statement of purpose
  • Graduate Record Examination General Test scores taken within the last five years
  • TOEFL scores for international applicants

Ph.D Requirements

Course requirements.

The student must complete a total of 90 credit hours, including dissertation and research internship. Candidates for the PhD degree may be granted up to 30 hours of graduate credit from other institutions as follows:

  • Of the 30 graduate transfer credit hours counted toward the PhD degree in social work, 15 of these credits must be in an area directly related to research (e.g., research methods, statistics, a mentored research project, etc.).
  • Of these 15 research-related credit hours, at least 6 credits must have been completed within three calendar years prior to the date the student enrolls in his/her first doctoral class following acceptance into the PhD program.
  • All 15 research transfer credits must have been successfully completed as prerequisites for the two advanced research methods courses (S 726 and S 737), the Research Internship (S 725), and the advanced statistics course (S 728).
  • Any or all of the 15 research transfer credits may be taken prior to acceptance into the PhD program and in addition to the 9 credit hours associated with the Pre-Doc Option.
  • All students must have successfully completed a graduate-level statistics course within three calendar years prior to enrolling in the required advanced statistics course. Students who have completed a statistics course more than three years prior to enrolling in the advanced statistics course may petition the director of the PhD program to test out of this requirement.
  • Any research transfer credits not completed prior to acceptance into the PhD program must be completed as part of the student’s doctoral studies in accordance with the above provisions.
  • Foundation research courses offered by the program include S 718, S 721, and S 790.

All courses credited toward the PhD degree must have a minimum grade of B and must receive written approval from the School of Social Work PhD Program Committee and the Dean of the University Graduate School. Specific program requirements include:

  • professional social work component  (33 cr.)
  • specialization component  (18 cr.)
  • research component  (21 cr.)
  • research internship  (6 cr.)
  • dissertation  (12 cr.)

All students in the PhD program, with the approval of the program director, will select 3 faculty members to serve as their academic advisors throughout their doctoral studies, one of whom will represent the student’s area of specialization outside the School of Social Work.

Qualifying Examination Process

The qualifying examination process is comprehensive and integrative in nature. Specific guidelines for the completion of the qualifying process are available from the PhD Program Director. Admission to Candidacy following the passing of the qualification examination and the completion of all course work, the student’s advisory committee will submit a Nomination to Candidacy Form to the University Graduate School. Upon approval of the Dean, the student will be admitted to candidacy and awarded a Certificate of Candidacy.

Research Proposal

After nomination to candidacy, the student, with the approval of the Program Director, will select a research committee of no fewer than four faculty members, including one member outside of the School of Social Work. This committee must approve the proposed dissertation topic.

Final Examination

The final examination is the oral defense of the dissertation.

“Social welfare” is a complex term. Its basic definition is deceptively simple—the collective welfare or wellbeing of a given society. But what constitutes that wellbeing and how it can and should be achieved, who belongs in that society and can and should form and formulate the “social,” are abiding questions that have been posed, debated, and contested for as long as collective human settlements have been in existence. World-shaping works of art, science, and philosophy have been crafted to answer these questions. Disagreements on those answers are at the heart of the social, cultural, and political tumult in which the U.S. is embroiled. Social welfare is, in other words, a weighty, vital, and pressing field of study.

The social welfare field draws from all social science disciplines and the discourses of multiple professions including social work. Whatever the domain of interest—health, poverty, education, incarceration, climate change, racism, migration, philanthropy, homelessness, history, and whether it is framed as a theoretical, methodological, issue-focused, or population-based inquiry—what we seek is students interested in not only finding the answers but in critically interrogating the questions themselves. Given the school’s commitment to advancing social justice in all of its programs, the courses of study students engage in should, no matter the specific domain, actively attend to issues of power, inequality, and disparity.

We believe that the vitality of the social welfare field is maintained by the passion for social justice brought by those who enter it. SP2’s rigorous yet flexible curriculum aims to provide the training necessary to forge the students’ passion into disciplined scholarship. To encourage each student to develop unique work and an individual scholarly voice, the program is intentionally interdisciplinary, designed to expose students to an array of approaches to social welfare offered by the world-class faculty of the school and the university.

The PhD program faculty are here to help you shape your specific area of expertise, drawing on their own decades of scholarship, teaching, and experience in areas including mental health , queer studies , sex work, homelessness , incarceration, gerontology , foster youth , and more .

Coursework provides students with core knowledge and skills as well as the opportunity to develop a specific expertise area. Papers and projects in core courses, combined with strategically selected electives, ensure a broad understanding of the field as well as deep study in the theoretical and empirical aspects of a specific area.

Students work with their academic advisors to develop an individualized plan for five electives. Graduate-level electives can be taken in any Penn department. At least one of these electives must be an advanced methods course, such as advanced statistical methods or qualitative research methodology.

Your Experience

You’ll devote 15 hours per week to a research assistantship during your first year and 20 hours per week during your second through fourth years. You typically begin by working with your first-year advisor to identify research experiences that align with your skills and interests. To develop a broad range of methodological skills, we encourage students to work on multiple faculty projects as well as their own research.

Each student is assigned a doctoral advisor upon entering the program. At the end of their first year, students are encouraged to assess the arrangement and decide whether to continue with that faculty member or to choose another advisor from among the Graduate Group faculty. The advisor helps the student prepare an individual educational plan, choose courses, form a dissertation committee, and become familiar with SP2 and Penn’s wide array of educational resources. Students are responsible for initiating meetings with their advisors at regular intervals.

After completing all required coursework, typically at the end of the second year, students must take the Preliminary Exam.

After completing the required coursework and passing the Preliminary Exam, students defend their dissertation proposal. Upon a successful defense, students become PhD candidates.

A dissertation defense serves as the program’s final examination. Passing this defense completes all degree requirements.

PhD Admissions Application Instructions

All applicants to doctoral study at Berkeley apply for graduate admission online, through the UC Berkeley Graduate and Professional Application for Admission. A separate application to the School of Social Welfare is not required.

The online application becomes available in early September each year. Berkeley Social Welfare only admits for the fall semester each academic year; no spring or summer admissions are offered.

2025-2026 Academic Year PhD Admission

Thank you for your interest in applying for the doctoral program at Berkeley Social Welfare. We are pausing doctoral admissions, including our Combined MSW/PhD program, for entry to the 2025-2026 academic year. 

Over the next several months, our faculty are re-envisioning our doctoral program to reflect changes to the academic landscape, funding opportunities, and feedback from our current doctoral students. We are confident our updated curriculum will equip our doctoral students to shape the future of social work research, and will reflect Berkeley Social Welfare’s multilevel, community-engaged, anti-oppressive, and evidence-informed approach to social work.

Graduate Application Requirements for PhD Admission

To be considered complete, applications for admission to the PhD Program and Combined MSW/PhD Program must include all of the following items :

  • A completed UC Berkeley Graduate and Professional Application for Admission, including payment of application fee and selection of faculty adviser.
  • Transcripts from ALL college-level course work undertaken.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation.
  • A written Statement of Purpose.
  • A written Personal History Statement.
  • A sample of scholarly written work.
  • A current résumé/CV.
  • For international applicants, a TOEFL electronic score report sent directly to Berkeley.

UC Berkeley Online Graduate Admissions Application

Applicants to all Berkeley Social Welfare graduate programs apply for admission by submitting a single online UC Berkeley Graduate and Professional Application for Admission .

All application supporting materials, including transcripts, written statements and writing samples, letters of recommendation, and résumé/CV, must be uploaded as PDF files directly into the online application by the application deadline. No late or paper copies are accepted , without exception.

Accessing the Online Application

When you log onto the graduate admissions application system for the first time, you will be instructed to create an account in order to begin your online application for graduate admission. The online application system will send you an automated e-mail with instructions for updating your log-in credentials (password) and accessing your individual application.

Application Updates and Status Checks

After you begin an application, you may save it and continue working on it later, but once you submit your application, you may no longer change your record online. You will still be able to login to check your application, monitor its status, and communicate with your recommenders. For other changes or questions, please email the Social Welfare Admissions Office directly at [email protected] .

Application Fee

You must submit an application fee when you apply. For U.S. citizens or current permanent residents, the application fee is $135. For all others, the fee is $155.

The application fee is paid directly to Berkeley Graduate Admissions, and payment must be submitted online with a major credit card at the time you submit your completed application. The application fee is nonrefundable.

Faculty Advisor Choice

In your online application you will be required to enter the name(s) of the faculty member(s) you wish to work with and whose research best reflects your interests. You will also be asked to briefly state why you chose these faculty members and why you chose them in your particular rank order. We highly recommend that applicants research and reach out to faculty before submitting an application

Transcripts

Transcripts for ALL college-level coursework undertaken must be uploaded as PDF files directly into the "Academic History" section of the online application. Unofficial copies are acceptable for the graduate admissions application, but all submitted transcripts MUST include:

  • the legible, full name of the applicant;
  • the legible, full name of the issuing academic institution; and
  • name of official degree conferred and date of conferral.

All uploaded transcripts should also display in the correct page orientation (i.e. landscape or portrait), and include the transcript legend (the back page in most cases).

Official copies of transcripts will be requested by the Graduate Division for all applicants who are admitted to and matriculate at Berkeley.

Letters of Recommendation

Three (3) Letters of Recommendation are required. For applicants to doctoral study, recommendations from individuals who have supervised your research and scholarly work (e.g., research project supervisors, thesis advisors, professors) tend to be the most useful to our selection process and should comprise the majority, if not all, letters.

Recommendations are submitted directly to your online application by your recommenders, and must be received by the application deadline. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact potential recommenders as early in the application process as possible to ensure letters are received by the deadline.

Your recommenders will receive an email at the email address you provide when you apply and will be asked to follow a link to submit their recommendation. Please use your recommender's institutional or corporate email address. Submissions from anonymous email addresses (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) may be subject to additional review.

You may waive the right to inspect your letters of recommendation on a voluntary basis. To waive access to your letters, complete the waiver section for each Letter of Recommendation.

Tips for Recommendations

  • Choose your recommenders carefully. If any of your potential recommenders are ambivalent about providing a recommendation for you, consider choosing someone else.
  • Contact your potential recommenders and confirm their contact information early in the process of preparing your application. Let them know that they will be receiving an automated invitation from the application system to complete their recommendation and submit a letter online directly to your application file.  Be sure to inform them of the application deadline .
  • After submitting your application, check your Application Status page frequently to monitor when your recommendations are received, and communicate with your recommenders as necessary.

Statement of Purpose

The Statement of Purpose is required from all applicants. You must upload your statement as a single PDF file to the corresponding page in your online application.

  • Research Interests and Intellectual Fit: Which specific social problems or research questions might you be interested in studying? Please speak to how you might study them by describing your key unit of analysis (e.g., individuals, organizations) and your intended methodological approaches. Please specify why Berkeley Social Welfare would be a good intellectual fit for your research interests, describing potential faculty mentors in Social Welfare and other departments, as well as campus supports and resources you would leverage.
  • Future Career Goals: What career do you intend to pursue after the doctoral program? How will the doctoral degree contribute to your career goals?

Statement of Purpose Tips

  • Statements should follow general APA Style Guidelines. They should be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11") with 1" margins on all sides. Please use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
  • Do not exceed the page limit guideline: 3-5 typed, double-spaced pages.
  • Review the Graduate Division’s essential tips for “Writing the Statement of Purpose.”
  • Proofread your statement for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors before uploading them to your online application.

  • Present a compelling image of you as a person, and your potential for success as a member of the Berkeley Social Welfare graduate academic community.

  • Direct readers’ attention to the evidence of your promise for higher education, and address any potential deficiencies in your academic record.

Sample of Scholarly Written Work

Your sample of scholarly written work must be uploaded as a PDF file to your online application for admission.

For your scholarly writing sample, you may submit published articles, a master’s thesis or portion thereof, papers written for graduate courses, or material written in a professional capacity. The writing sample should give evidence of your ability to think critically and analytically; it should not be purely descriptive.

Résumé/Curriculum Vita

You are required to upload a current CV/résumé to your online application. You may format your CV/résumé however you wish. Please include contact information; educational background; relevant work/volunteer experience; teaching experience; and research experience, publications, and presentations. Previous successful admits typically have had 1-2 years of formal research experience.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Scores

For applications for Fall 2024 admission to the PhD Program or Combined MSW/ PhD Program, the Graduate Record Exam is NOT required.

Evidence of English Language Proficiency (for International Applicants)

International applicants from countries in which the official language is not English, and who do not meet the TOEFL exemption qualifications , must submit official evidence of English language proficiency. This requirement is most commonly satisfied by submitting an official score report for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

For purposes of admission, your most recent TOEFL score must be at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT). Acceptable TOEFL scores are from tests taken between June 1, 2022 and November 15, 2023. TOEFL tests taken after November 15, 2023, will not be accepted for admission into the 2024-25 academic year.

All test scores should be sent electronically, directly to UC Berkeley Graduate Division (Institution Code 4833); they do not need to be sent to the School of Social Welfare.  All official test score reports must be received by the application deadline.

Re-applicants to All Programs

Re-applicants to all graduate degree programs are required to re-submit all elements of the application, including a current résumé/CV and new letters of recommendation.

Admissions Decisions and Notification

All applicants to the PhD Program and Combined MSW/PhD Program will be notified of decisions and offers of funding support in early February.

Enhancing Clinical Leadership Skills In Academia | Supervision | Practice Theories |  Anti-Oppressive Practice

The NYU Silver DSW Program in Clinical Social Work is a practice-oriented doctoral degree designed to prepare professionally licensed students for leadership roles in academic and agency settings. By promoting practice-relevant scholarship, graduates will develop new clinical social work knowledge to advance anti-oppressive praxis toward human rights and social justice.

Building on the NYU Silver School of Social Work’s reputation for excellence in clinical social work education, the DSW Program offers theoretical, evidence-based practice, research, and policy coursework. Additionally, the program provides writing workshops and a choice of a teaching or supervisory internship geared towards the enhancement of advanced clinical practice knowledge and skills. The unique aspects of the program are designed to develop clinical academic leadership skills, prepare students to produce publishable papers under the direction of an advisor, and present at professional conferences.

Admission Requirements

  • A Master of Social Work degree from an accredited school of social work. In exceptional circumstances, a student with a Master’s degree in a related field may be admitted, however, compensatory MSW level work may be required.
  • At least a 3.0 GPA as evidence of superior academic achievement in undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Priority will be given to students who have completed an introductory statistics course (graduate or undergraduate) in the last two years with a final grade of B or better. At a minimum, the statistics course should have covered probability, descriptive statistics, and an introduction to t-tests and the general linear model.
  • A minimum of two years post-MSW social work or related practice experience is recommended, as certification for most institutions requires instructors teaching practice courses to have some practice experience. This experience should demonstrate the applicant’s professional competence, ability to undertake advanced study, and potential for leadership.
  • The University of Utah requires a minimum TOEFL score of 80 IBT or 550 PBT or a minimum IELTS score of 6.50. The College of Social Work, due to the intensive need for excellent communication skills, requires a minimum score of 100 IBT or 600 PBT, or an IELTS score of 7.0 to 7.5.

The Statement of Purpose offers you the opportunity to articulate your self-assessment as a strong candidate for admission to the College of Social Work PhD Program. The doctoral program focuses on developing your scholarly skills in research and teaching in higher education and thus, your views about social work scholarship as well as your future role as a scholar educator are central to assessing your fit with the program. Please be as specific as possible in answering the questions below. Maximum length: 6 (six) double-spaced pages, font size 12. [NOTE: Place your last name and first initial on every page of all documents.]

  • Discuss your qualifications and readiness for pursuing doctoral studies in social work. In doing so, provide examples of your ability in the following areas:         a) academic and prior intellectual and scholarly accomplishments         b) analytical thinking and clear communication         c) working with colleagues of diverse backgrounds and perspectives,         d) self-direction and initiative
  • Describe the development of your research goals (while in the doctoral program and long-term) and the questions you hope to address in your research.         a) How does your work experience inform your research priorities and how will your research inform practice and/or             policy?         b) How do your research objectives demonstrate your commitment to social justice and/or enhancing social             well-being?         c) In what ways do you see our doctoral program and the University of Utah as a good fit for your research goals?             Identify any research projects and social work PhD faculty - or faculty in other departments on our campus – with             whom you might be interested in working.
  • Articulate how your cultural and educational opportunities; structural or systemic issues you have grappled with; and your personal and/or professional experiences in diverse communities inform your research interests and commitment to social justice and equity.
  • What are your career plans after you complete your PhD.  How do you expect to use the research and scholarly skills developed in the doctoral program?
  • Three (or more) academic and/or professional letters of reference from people who can attest to your personal qualifications, character, and dependability. These letters should be submitted directly by the writers, through the online Application for Admission.
  • A sample of writing in the form of a published article, a manuscript that is being submitted for publication, a report that has been completed in connection with a research interest, or a paper that has been prepared specifically for admission to the College of Social Work PhD Program. Some applicants submit a paper that was completed during their MSW studies.
  • A personal Skype interview, if recommended by the PhD Admissions Committee.
  • Completion of the Graduate School Application for Admission, including the upload of all documents requested during the application process. Please note that your application will not be processed without receipt of the non-refundable application fee.

Our PhD Program balances theory-driven research based on strong methodological and analytic skills. We prepare students for exciting roles in which they will contribute to the development of knowledge in the field of social welfare and the profession of social work. Graduates are prepared to be productive researchers and skilled teachers in prominent schools of social work, and we offer competitive support for qualifying students.

We have two curriculum delivery strategies (onsite and distance ) with the same program requirements, standards of rigor, and expectations for students. Designed for students to obtain their degree in three to five academic years, the first part of the program consists of core doctoral coursework followed by independent research culminating in the dissertation process.

Ph.D. Admission Notification 2024

For the Academic Year 2024, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a Deemed to be University funded by Ministry of Education through UGC is announcing admission notification for Ph.D. Programmes across Mumbai Campus and Hyderabad, Guwahati & Tuljapur Off-Campuses.

Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria:

(1) Those clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any of three categories are eligible to apply for the admission to Ph.D. programmes:

Category-1: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.

Catcgory-2: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Processor.

Catcgory-3: Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only and not for the for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor

(2) For admission to Ph.D. in Social Work, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in the subject of Social Work is the eligibility requirement.

(3) For admission to Ph.D., in Applied Psychology, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in the subject of Psychology is the eligibility requirement.

(4) For admission to Ph.D. in Education, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any one of the subjects of Social Science discipline/allied fields, preferably in the subject Education is the eligibility requirement.

(5) For admission to all the remaining Ph.D. programmes mentioned in Serial Numbers 4 to 17, clearing in UGC-NET 2024 in any one of the subjects of Social Science discipline/allied fields is the eligibility requirement.

(6) Those students who are having valid JRF prior to 2024 in Social Work, Psychology are also eligible to apply for Ph.D. in Social Work and Ph.D.in Applied Psychology respectively. The valid JRF holders prior to 2024 in any subject of Social Science discipline/allied fields, preferably in Education are eligible to apply for Ph.D.in Education

(7) Those students who have cleared only NET prior to 2024 are not eligible to apply for any of the Ph.D. programmes.

Eligibility criteria of qualifying degree:

Candidates who have completed: A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed

Or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.

Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time.

Selection criteria for Ph.D. admission:

(1) For those students with category 2 and category 3 of UGC-NET 2024, 70% weightage is given to their NET score and 30% weightage is to their performance in the personal interview

(2) For those students who are having a valid JRF (JRF prior to 2024 or JRF of 2024), the selection will be done based on the personal interview only. The personal interview component carries 100% weightage. The students with JRF of 2024 may also apply with their NET score along with category 2 and category 3 students where both NET score and score in Personal interview will be the selection criteria.

(3) Reservation* – Tata Institute of Social Sciences is Deemed to be University funded by Ministry of Education through UGC and follows all the norms and regulation of Government of India with respect to reservation policy. According to this, in the Central Universities and Institutions which are deemed to be Universities, the reservation of seats shall be as follows:

i. 15% of the seats for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.

ii. 7.5% of seats Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.

iii. 27% of the seats for Other Backward Classes (OBC) Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) candidates as per the Central List

Mode of Ph.D. Programme: Ph.D. Programmes are offered in Full-time and Part-time mode. Both the full-time and part-time Ph.D. programme are offered only through regular mode. TISS does not offer any Ph.D. programme in distance mode.

TISS follows all the guidelines and norms issued by the University Grants Commission from time to time in regulating the Ph.D. programmes such as “ University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.

The full-time and part-time Ph.D. programmes follow uniform standards such as successful completion of coursework, regular presentations before the Research Advisory Committees, stipulated time period to complete Ph.D., the evaluation and assessment methods of coursework and thesis. The Ph.D. degree certificate or Ph.D. award certificate of TISS does not make any distinction between full-time and part-time Ph.D. and both are treated equally.

The part-time Ph.D. students are working professionals who join Ph.D. programme by obtaining a No Objection Certificate from their organizations/employers that assures them providing leave and other support to complete the Ph.D. work. Those students who wish to apply under part-time Ph.D. mode are required to submit a NOC from their employer/organization clearly mentioning that (i) The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis. (ii) His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research. (iii) If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.

TISS encourages professionals working in development sector, government employees, people working with grassroot organizations and corporate groups to join its Ph.D. programmes through part-time mode.

The full-time Ph.D. students are not working professional and devote their full time to the Ph.D. research. They are mostly receipts of various fellowships/scholarships and are required to put their attendance on daily basis in the Attendance Register maintained in the Doctoral Students’ Office (DSO) of the Institute. They are also required to attend the research seminars, talks arranged on regular basis by their schools and the DSO. Whenever, the full-time Ph.D. students get a job, they can request for converting their Ph.D. into part-time Ph.D.

Ph.D. Coursework : All the selected candidates for Ph.D. programme – both part-time and full-time are required to successfully complete the Ph.D. coursework which is a minimum of 12 credits, including a “Research and Publication Ethics” course as notified by UGC vide D.O. No. F.1- 1/2018(Journal/CARE) in 2019 and courses on qualitative, quantitative research methodology.

A Ph.D. scholar must obtain a minimum of 55% marks or its equivalent grade in the UGC 10-point scale in the course work to be eligible to continue in the programme and submit his or her thesis.

The Ph.D. Coursework will be offered in off-line regular classroom mode during the first semester of the Ph.D. programme. The part-time Ph.D. students may join regular classes along with full-time Ph.D. students or they have to attend the Ph.D. coursework that will be organized in six modular workshops in regular off-line mode spread across the first semester.

Department of Social Work, DU celebrates Har Ghar Tiranga and Independence Day with its students, teaching, and administrative staff.

Department of Social Work (Delhi School of Social Work) University of Delhi, celebrates 75 years of committed academic engagement (1946–2021). The Department was founded in 1946 as the National YWCA School of Social Work at Isabella Thouborn College, a reputed Women’s College in Lucknow. It was in 1947 that the School shifted to Delhi and was affiliated to the University of Delhi in 1948 as Delhi School of Social Work. It was taken over by the University of Delhi in 1979 and became its Department of Social Work. The first batch of students from the Department had met Mahatma Gandhi and the best written resolutions of the social work students were put together and gifted as the first copy of the accepted oath to the Mahatma and which became our first oath as social work professionals. The Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Department coincide with the 75 years of India’s independence and 100 years of foundation of the University of Delhi. The Department launched a logo of 75 years on 2nd October 2020, that is onset of Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Since 2020 till 2022 the Department has organised series of activities to include International Women’s Day in offline mode, International and national Webinars, Gandhi Jayanti, birth centenary of Professor Madhav Sadashiv Gore, the founder principal of the Department of Social Work (1921–2010); Platinum Jubilee Annual Days. The events have been graced by the presence of University officials, senior alumni from India and abroad and by partner agencies. The Department continued to function smoothly with minimum impact on teaching-learning pedagogy during the pandemic, with the support of the faculty, students and non-teaching staff working under the able leadership of the Head of the Department. Various milestones were achieved including new recruitments and career advancement promotions. The UGCF for Social Work was framed with active participation of faculty from Department and Colleges and approved. The Department has been able to upgrade its resource infrastructure by renovating its office into a classroom, setting up the LAN connection in the campus, converting our committee room into a fully functional audio-visual room. The Department of Social Work, University of Delhi is one of the partners in the project RISHII (Resources for Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions in India), which is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. As per the result of Best College Survey-2022, conducted by India Today MDRA, our Department has been ranked as ‘The Best Government Funded College in Social Work in Academic excellence in India’, ‘The Best Government Funded College in Social Work in Personality and leadership development in India’. We have also been ranked as ‘The Best Government Funded College in Social Work in Career Progression & Placement’ and also as ‘The Best College of Social Work in Northern India’. As per the ranking conducted by Outlook - ICARE 2022, the Department has ranked high on various parameters such as ‘The Best College in India in Academic Research Excellence’.

The Penn State World Campus Master of Social Work program involves online coursework and in-person supervised fieldwork.  Students concentrate in clinical social work and specialize in one of two areas: 1) children and families across the lifespan; or 2) mental health and substance use.

The MSW program prepares students for advanced clinical social work practice is a range of settings.  The master’s program is designed to address the wide range of skills and functions required of a professional social worker.  Upon successful program completion, students can sit for licensure to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Pennsylvania and other states. 

Admission Requirements

Applicants apply for admission to the program via the Graduate School application for admission . Requirements listed here are in addition to Graduate Council policies listed under GCAC-300 Admissions Policies .

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA .  We seek students passionate about helping their communities and striving for economic and social justice.  Applicants must exhibit potential and professional capabilities essential for effective functioning in the graduate school environment.  Applicants must also have personal qualifications essential for effective social work practice, including sensitivity and responsiveness in relationships, concern for the needs of others, adaptability, good judgement, critical thinking, creativity, integrity, and skill in oral and written communications.

An applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree with a broad liberal arts foundation from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum average of a B (3.0 GPA on a 4 point scale) in all undergraduate work
  • No admissions test (e.g., GRE) are required for admission.  

Consistent with the Council for Social Work Education’s Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards, the Penn State World Campus MSW program does not grant course credit, transfer credit, or exemptions for prior life, volunteer, or employment experience.

The language of instruction at Penn State is English. English proficiency test scores (TOEFL/IELTS) may be required for international applicants. See GCAC-305 Admission Requirements for International Students for more information.

Advanced Standing

Students who have received a social work degree (BSW) within the past five years and have a minimum 3.25 GPA  from a Council for Social Work Education accredited undergraduate program are eligible for advanced standing.  Students who are granted advanced standing during the admissions process can receive credit for the generalist courses offered during Year 1 of full-time study.  The number of advanced credits granted depends on the comparability of the student’s undergraduate courses to the Penn State World Campus MSW program’s courses and on the grades earned in those undergraduate course (i.e., must be a B grade or higher).

In addition, students entering with advanced standing can receive six (6) field education credits.  The six credits of field education are granted based on the number of hours of field experience completed at the undergraduate level, provided that the undergraduate social work practicum totals a minimum of 400 hours and the student achieved at least a B grade.

Degree Requirements

Students must receive a minimum of a B grade in all courses and field work. Required courses are:

MSW 800A , MSW 800B , MSW 800C may be taken in series to fulfill this requirement on a part-time basis.

MSW 801A , MSW 801B , MSW 801C may be taken in series to fulfill this requirement on a part-time basis.

MSW 802A , MSW 802B , MSW 802C may be taken in series to fulfill this requirement on a part-time basis.

MSW 894A , MSW 894B , MSW 894C may be taken in series to fulfill this requirement on a part-time basis.

MSW 894 represents the capstone project necessary for graduation.  Students identify an issue or problem in the field site agency, analyze the issue, and develop a solution/recommendation.  Students will present their capstone project in an oral presentation as well as submit an executive summary.

A graduate minor is available in any approved graduate major or dual-title program. The default requirements for a graduate minor are stated in Graduate Council policies listed under GCAC-600 Research Degree Policies and GCAC-700 Professional Degree Policies , depending on the type of degree the student is pursuing:

  • GCAC-611 Minor - Research Doctorate
  • GCAC-641 Minor - Research Master's
  • GCAC-709 Minor - Professional Doctorate
  • GCAC-741 Minor - Professional Master's

Student Aid

World Campus students in graduate degree programs may be eligible for financial aid. Refer to the Tuition and Financial Aid section of the World Campus website for more information.

Graduate courses carry numbers from 500 to 699 and 800 to 899. Advanced undergraduate courses numbered between 400 and 499 may be used to meet some graduate degree requirements when taken by graduate students. Courses below the 400 level may not. A graduate student may register for or audit these courses in order to make up deficiencies or to fill in gaps in previous education but not to meet requirements for an advanced degree.

Social Work Program Mission

The mission of the Master of Social Work Program at Kennesaw State University is to produce innovative social workers who facilitate and enhance the well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

The Master of Social Work (MSW) degree is designed to prepare students for entry-level professional practice in social work. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) exam, and they may also pursue further clinical supervision requirements to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). The KSU MSW degree is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. 

Our social work degree offers a full-time program of study with a focus in clinical social work practice. The program consists of four academic semesters (two years) of 60 credit hours with 48 of these credit hours spent in the classroom and 12 in supervised field practicum sites located throughout the Atlanta area. It should be noted that the MSW Program is offering Advanced Standing as of spring 2023.

As of February 2021, the Master in Social Work Program in the Wellstar College has been reaccredited by the Council on Social Work Education for the next eight years. The CSWE’s Commission on Accreditation (COA) is responsible for developing accreditation standards that define competent preparation and ensuring that social work programs meet these standards. The CSWE Office of Social Work Accreditation administers a multistep accreditation process that involves program self-studies, site visits, and COA reviews.

Mandatory Fees

Miscellaneous fees, admissions fees.

Full-time rates/fees are charged for enrollment of 8 or more credits for graduate students outside of the Columbus School of Law, 12 or more credits for Columbus School of Law day students, and 13 or more credits for Columbus School of Law evening students. Students are charged the rate for their primary program regardless of whether they are enrolled in courses in another school or department. Students enrolled in joint degree graduate programs where the tuition rates for the individual schools/degrees differ are billed at the higher tuition rate for the entirety of their joint degree program and are considered students in the higher tuition rate school for the purposes of student financial aid and student loans. Students pursuing a certificate as a part of their degree program are charged the tuition rate for their degree program. Students enrolled in joint degree programs with the law school are billed standard law school tuition rates for the entirety of their joint degree program and are considered law school students for the purposes of student financial aid and student loans.

Fall & Spring Semester Fees 

These fees are charged in the fall and spring semesters.  The Graduate Student Association fee is not charged to students in the Columbus School of Law and is waived for students who are enrolled in 100% online programs.

Student Medical Plan 

Enrollment in the university’s Student Medical Insurance plan is required for all domestic students enrolled in 12 or more credits and for all international students, regardless of the number of credits in which they are enrolled, unless an annual online coverage waiver is completed by the published deadline. Additional information on the student medical insurance plan and instructions for waiving coverage are available at the Student Medical Insurance webpage . 

Columbus School of Law Fees

These fees are charged to students in the Columbus School of Law in the fall and spring semesters.

Fees listed as “course fee” or “program fee” are charged in lieu of regular tuition.  All other fees in this section are charged in addition to the regular course tuition.  Graduate students enrolling in undergraduate-level classes will be charged applicable class fees, as listed here .

These fees are paid at the time of application and do not bill to or credit to the student account. 

Registration Deposits 

Deposits are not billed to the student account and are applied as a pre-payment of future fees.  Deposits are non-refundable.

Payment is due by  the published due date  each term. Unpaid balances are subject to late payment fees and interest charges as outlined  here .

Housing charges include cable T.V. connection, laundry, and internet services.  Not all room types are available in each hall. Refer to the Residence Hall Information webpage for descriptions of available room types in specific halls.

Additional per diem charges will be assessed to students approved to reside on campus outside of normal contractual periods.

Serving as a PhD taster programme, the PolyU Research Postgraduate (RPg) Summer School will take place in face-to-face mode on campus this July. Participants will have opportunities to meet professors, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, visit advanced research facilities, participate in knowledge enrichment activities, and interact with students and alumni for experience sharing. We welcome all local and non-local senior undergraduates and master students who are planning to pursue research studies to apply.

The RPg Summer School is a  PhD tasting programme  for participating students to experience wide aspects of postgraduate research studies as well as campus life at PolyU. Participants will have the opportunities to meet professors, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, visit advanced research facilities, participate in knowledge enrichment activities, and interact with students and alumni for experience sharing.

PolyU provides up to HK$10,000 (~US$1,270) scholarship, free student hall accommodation and subsidy of Hong Kong study visa application for each qualified participant, plus conditional offers of admission to our RPg studies .  Senior undergraduates and master students from any discipline of your university who are planning to pursue research studies are welcomed to apply for our RPg Summer School. The PolyU Research Postgraduate Summer School (virtual mode, 13 July - 27 July, excluding Saturdays and Sundays) not only serves as a PhD-tasting programme for the participants to experience wide elements of research studies but also provides them with an opportunity to get familiar with the support that PolyU will offer. 

During the Summer School, students will have opportunities to meet professors and researchers, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, interact with students and alumni for experience sharing, and prepare their research proposal for presentation at the end of the Summer School.

One-to-one mentorship with an eminent professor Successful applicants will be supervised by an eminent professor in HKU to plan and carry out a research project. The Programme office will help participants match with mentors based on participants’ given priorities.

Scholarship for participants A scholarship of HK$10,000 1 will be awarded to each participant of the Programme upon successful completion of the Programme.  

Financial support  Financial support of airfare up to HK$5,000 1 , and university accommodation up to HK$5,000 1 will be provided on a reimbursement basis.

Prizes and awards for top performers Prizes and awards will be available for top performers in the Programme.  The details will be announced in due course. 

Possible conditional offer for a HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship  Selected students with outstanding performance may be awarded a conditional offer for the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship.  The HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship is the most prestigious entrance scholarship to attract top students from around the world to pursue full-time PhD studies at HKU. The scholarship package includes up to HK$420,900 (US$53,960) in the first year, and up to HK$400,900 (US$51,390) in each of the subsequent years during the normative study period.  Click  here for the details regarding the scholarship.

Q1.    Can I apply for Summer Research Programme if I am just a Year 2 UG student? A1:    If you are an outstanding student with excellent academic achievement, or you have ample research experience, you may still submit your application for the summer research programme for the Faculties to consider.  Though senior UG students might have higher priority to be selected.

Q2.    I will have my exam and cannot come to Hong Kong till mid-/late June, can I still apply /eligible for the programme? A2:    If you are selected for the programme, you may apply to attend the Programme via online mode as an exceptional arrangement until you can physically come to Hong Kong.  It is expected that students should arrive Hong Kong in person in week 4 the latest. 

Q3.    I haven’t taken the English Language proficiency test, am I eligible to apply for the summer research programme? A3:    You may still apply for the summer research programme if you have not yet taken the English Language proficiency test, although that would be one of the considerations when selecting candidates for the programme.  

Q4.    I realised that I have submitted wrong information in the form by mistake, what should I do? A4:    Please send in the request for amending submitted information via email: [email protected] . 

Q5.    I have submitted the application and uploaded the required documents, but I haven’t paid the application fee.  What should I do? A5:    Your application will not be processed if you have not paid the application fee.  Please proceed to settle the payment and send an email to [email protected] specifying your full name, registered email address and the receipt number.

Q6.    My official transcript will not be ready before the application deadline.  What should I do? A6:    Please submit the latest transcript available for the application.

Summer Research@ CUHK

The Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) provides an opportunity for undergraduate students from overseas universities to undertake research attachments for eight weeks at CUHK during the summer. Students will be actively engaged in research under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member and earn three credits upon successful completion of the programme.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

USM’s Summer Field Program Offers Students Unique Coastal Research Opportunities

Jump aboard a research vessel and take in the beauty of the Mississippi Sound and unique barrier islands with the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s (GCRL) Summer Field Program, in which students can study marine science in a coastal environment.

Located in Ocean Springs, Miss, the Summer Field Program was established in 1947 at Magnolia State Park; for decades, the program has helped students gain valuable experiences in ocean and marine sciences. It is housed in USM’s School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE), and is offered in two summer sessions, with in-person and online options for undergraduate and graduate students looking to learn more about the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Dr. Laura Blackmon, associate director of the Marine Education Center, looks forward to the Summer Field Program’s 77 th year.

“The Summer Field Program will again bring expert marine science instructors together with students from across the region for amazing education experiences,” Dr. Blackmon said. “It has produced a wide network of alumni, including marine science researchers and educators working across the Gulf Coast and Coastal USM, as well as at numerous other colleges, universities, and marine labs nationwide.”

Classes are set both in a laboratory and field work setting, with USM research vessels allowing students to explore the Mississippi Sound. Overnight trips to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico allow students to fully study the beauty of the coastal habitats. On-site amenities include a dormitory, dining hall, library, and a research specimen museum.

The first session, offered in June, features courses such as shark biology, marine ecology, oceanography, coastal environments and restoration, and environmental photography. An online session offers a comprehensive overview of the biology of marine mammals.

The second session, offered in July, will focus on marine conservation and ichthyology, marine biology, and toxicology. An online session will be offered with a focus on marine invertebrate zoology. Academic credit will be awarded upon completion.

Dr. Kelly Darnell, director of the GCRL, described the uniqueness of the program and all it has to offer.

“Our Summer Field Program gives students the unique opportunity to live at the Gulf Coast Research Lab and be fully immersed in the environment and ecosystems they’re studying,” Dr. Darnell said. “For many students, this is their first experience with marine biology – I can’t think of a better or more memorable way to learn than to dive right in.”

Set up by the Innovation and Technology Commission (“ITC”), HKSAR government, the STEM Internship Scheme (the “Scheme”) encourages STEM students to gain innovation and technology (“I&T”)-related work experience during their studies and to foster their interest in pursuing a career in I&T after graduation, so as to enlarge the local I&T talent pool.

We would like to solicit your support for the Scheme through offering I&T-related internship positions to our students.  Internship Vacancy Posting

Please note that the Job Post Request Form and Eligibility Verification Form are currently CLOSED due to overwhelming responses.

Student’s Eligibility Verification

  • Upon offer confirmation , the employer has to inform PolyU via the Eligibility Verification Form to obtain confirmation from PolyU in relation to student’s eligibility/funding availability. PolyU will advise the employer regarding the eligibility of the proposed student intern (within five working days for local undergraduate students and within 14 days for non-local/postgraduate students) after receiving the student’s online application for the Scheme.
  • Student applications have to go through PolyU for approval, which is subject to student eligibility, internship nature, and funding availability at students’ time of submission.
  • The Scheme will be closed when the provision of funding is exhausted .

Allowance and Reimbursement

  • The allowance for the internship for each student intern is HK$11,190 per month (i.e. 30 days), capped at two months. The abovesaid allowance will be reimbursed to student interns via PolyU .
  • The employer can, at own discretion and expenses, extend the internship duration or offer additional allowance to the student intern(s), provided that the arrangements comply with the Employment Ordinance, the Minimum Wage Ordinance, the Mandatory Provident Fund Ordinance, and other related ordinances.
  • The employer is expected to remind and support the student intern(s) to complete online application(s) upon offer confirmation, the required documents for reimbursement after the internship, and communicate with PolyU as early as possible if any problem arises that would affect the reimbursement of the allowance.

Eligibility As required by ITC, the Scheme is open to undergraduates and postgraduates who are:

  • local or non-local students enrolling on one of the  full-time STEM programmes  (please refer to the “ List of Eligible STEM Programmes ” on this page) recognised by ITC to be eligible for the Scheme;
  • from  any year of studies ; and
  • legally employable  in Hong Kong.

Internship Requirements

  • Full-time placements in Hong Kong  with duration of  at least four consecutive weeks (i.e. 28 calendar days), allowance  capped at two months .
  • The duration of the internship is the number of calendar days in the contract period, and the start and end days of the internship should be working days .
  • I&T-related internship positions , i.e. actual work which contains sufficient I&T elements.
  • The summer internship should commence  no earlier than May 2023 , with a duration of at least four consecutive weeks.
  • The internship funded by the Scheme, as required by ITC,  CANNOT be used to fulfil WIE requirements . However, the internship period IN EXCESS of that required for WIE requirements could be funded by the Scheme. For students who are undertaking an internship period IN EXCESS of that required by WIE requirements, please refer to Appendix 3 in the  Guidelines for Students .
  • Internship positions directly subsidised by the Government DO NOT fall under this Scheme (e.g. internship programmes of the HKSAR Government).

Application Procedures

  • Students may apply for STEM internship positions through PolyU Job Board or Faculties/Schools/Departments, or source on their own.
  • Online Application Form (for applicants undertaking an internship period in excess of their WIE requirements, click HERE )
  • Copy of Employment Contract
  • Signed  Student Charter (for applicants undertaking an internship period in excess of their WIE requirements, click HERE )
  • Copy of Student ID Card
  • Copy of “No Objection Letter” (“NOL”) issued by the Immigration Department (for non-local students only)
  • Home Faculty’s/School’s/Department’s approval for student’s internship participation (for research postgraduate students only)
  • Approval for student applications will be granted by CPS, SAO based on student eligibility, internship nature, and funding availability at students’ time of submission. The first batch of applications will receive priority consideration for approval. CPS, SAO may consider later batch(es) of applications subject to the funding availability.
  • Successful applicants are required to attend an  online pre-internship training workshop  organised by CPS, SAO.
  • Students should submit the following items to CPS, SAO  within two weeks upon the completion of internship:
  • Assessment/Evaluation Form (to be filled in by both employer and student intern)
  • Timesheet (signed by work supervisor)
  • Salary Statement (if applicable)
  • Learning Journal and Photos
  • Submit bank account information to the Finance Office of PolyU (for undergraduates/taught postgraduates ; for research postgraduates ).
  • Allowance for summer internship for each student intern is  HK$11,190 per month (i.e. 30 days),  capped at two months . Student interns may receive the allowance under the Scheme for more than one internship place, PROVIDED THAT
  • the participating employers are different and the internship periods do NOT overlap; and
  • the maximum amount of allowance does NOT exceed three months in one academic year (i.e. current academic year is from 29 August 2022 to 27 August 2023).
  • Only students who have successfully enrolled on the Scheme, completed the entire internship as specified in the employment contract, and submitted post-internship documents are eligible to receive the allowance.
  • Allowance will NOT be reimbursed to students who fail to achieve 80% attendance rate or cannot complete the internship as planned.
  • Unpaid leaves will NOT be taken into consideration in the calculation of allowance under the Scheme, and will be deducted from the calculation of internship duration.
  • The employers may, at own discretion, offer additional allowance to student interns, which the arrangements should comply with the Employment Ordinance, the Minimum Wage Ordinance, the Mandatory Provident Fund Ordinance, and other related ordinances.

Student interns who do NOT receive a minimum wage from employers for the internship under the Scheme should check their eligibility to work as “Work Experience Student” under the Minimum Wage Ordinance , and submit to employers the Confirmation of Student Status and the statutory declaration (Click HERE for details).

  • Attendance of pre-internship training workshop is a mandatory requirement of release of allowance.
  • Students may expect to receive the allowance around three months after the post-internship submission.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
