Essay on Ayodhya Ram Mandir: The Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue has been one of the most heated and long-standing religious disputes in modern Indian history. It involves the ownership and the right to construct a temple dedicated to Lord Ram at the site of the former Babri Masjid in the city of Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

Hindus believe that the site is the birthplace of Lord Ram and that historically there was a Ram temple that was destroyed by the Mughals and the Babri Masjid was constructed on top of its ruins in the 16th century. Muslims, on the other hand, claim that the land has historically been used for Islamic worship and that they have never interfered with Hindu religious practices.

This controversial issue has been in disputes for over a century now. It first came to prominence in 1949 when idols of Ram reportedly appeared inside the Babri Masjid, leading to clashes between Hindus and Muslims. This eventually led to the demolition of the mosque by Hindu kar sevaks in 1992, resulting in nationwide riots.

The matter reached the Supreme Court which finally delivered its verdict in November 2019, handing over the disputed land to a trust to build the Ram Temple. This settled one of India’s most contentious land disputes. However, the issue has still left behind deep scars on India’s social fabric.

This article seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue, trace its history, key events, disputes and finally the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment. It aims to present an objective analysis of this sensitive religious-political issue that has impacted the nation.

Major Architectural Highlights of Ram Mandir

The grand dimensions and intricate details of the temple design can be summed up as a blend of artistic vision and traditional architectural prowess. Around 550 temples across India were studied to find the best possible architectural design for the Ram Mandir.

  • A 14-metre thick layer of roller-compacted concrete, looking like an artificial rock, has been used to construct the foundation of the temple.
  • A 21-foot-high plinth of Granite has been constructed for protection against ground moisture.

The Main Temple

  • The main temple is built in Nagara Style .
  • This reflects a conscious effort to blend aesthetic grace with ancient wisdom.
  • The Sompura family has a rich legacy of temple craftsmanship and has been associated with the design of some renowned Indian temples such as Somnath. Thus, their association brings a sense of continuity to the architectural design of the Ram Mandir and adds a historical and artistic dimension to it.
  • The ground floor of the temple has been designed to depict the story of the birth and childhood of Lord Rama.
  • The first floor is designed like Lord Rama’s Darbaar.

  • Some other temples proposed to be constructed within the temple complex are those dedicated to Maharishi Vashishtha, Maharishi Valmiki, Maharishi Vishwamitra, Maharishi Agastya, Nishad Raj, Devi Ahilya, and Mata Shabri.
  • Kuber Tila is located in the southwestern part of the complex. The ancient temple of Lord Shiva located in this part has been restored. Also, a bronze idol of the Ramayana character ‘Jatayu’ has been installed here.
  • A sewage treatment plant
  • A water treatment plant
  • A fire service
  • An independent power station.
  • A Pilgrims Facility Centre of 25,000 capacity to provide medical facilities and locker facilities to the pilgrims.
  • A separate block with a bathing area, washrooms, washbasin, open taps, etc.
  • Learning from the damage caused by lightning strikes to some old temples in Mathura and Kashi, around 200 KA light arresters have been installed over the temple structure.

  • Images of river goddesses, Ganga and Yamuna, are placed outside the Garbhagriha.
  • The temple is usually constructed on an upraised platform.
  • The portico has a pillared approach.
  • The vertical end of Shikhara is shaped like a horizontal fluted disc, called Amalak. On the top of the Amalak, a spherical shape is placed, called Kalash.

Introduction: Namaste, dear readers. In today's blog, we delve into the profound spiritual insights and cultural significance of the Ram Mandir, a topic of immense importance to our Indian civilization and the world at large. As Swami Mukundananda Ji eloquently explains, the construction of the Ram Mandir is not merely an architectural feat but a pivotal step in solidifying our spiritual roots and cultural identity. Let us explore these enlightening perspectives, understanding the deeper essence of this monumental undertaking.

The Timeliness and Divine Intent of the Ram Mandir

The debate surrounding the timing of the Ram Mandir's construction brings to light a significant spiritual principle: the supremacy of pure intention (Bhakti) over material considerations. Citing the example of King Dasharath and Guru Vashishta from the Ramayana, Swami Ji elucidates that when actions are driven by a sincere desire to please the Supreme Lord, they transcend mundane calculations of time (Muhurat). This principle is vividly demonstrated in the context of Ram Mandir's construction, where the collective desire of the Indian people to see Lord Ram in his sacred abode transcends political timelines and worldly concerns.

3 Reasons WHY We Need Ram Mandir Now

Ram Mandir: A Pillar of Indian Civilization and Global Spirituality

The Ram Mandir stands as a beacon of spiritual and cultural heritage for India and the world. Swami Ji highlights how Indian civilization, revered as the Jagat Guru (World Teacher), is deeply rooted in its spiritual epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. These sacred texts have shaped our arts, music, dance, and architecture, fostering a civilization steeped in spirituality. As India strides forward in economic and technological development, the Ram Mandir symbolizes a harmonious blend of progress and cultural integrity. It's a testament to India's commitment to a development model that honors its spiritual heritage, setting an example for holistic growth.

The Multi-Dimensional Importance of the Ram Mandir in Modern Times

In addressing concerns about the funds used for the Ram Mandir, Swami Ji underscores the necessity of spiritual institutions alongside material infrastructure like hospitals. He stresses that health is not just physical but encompasses emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. The spiritual nourishment provided by temples like the Ram Mandir plays a crucial role in addressing the inner health of individuals and society. In a world grappling with mental and emotional challenges, places of spiritual solace like the Ram Mandir serve a vital function, uplifting and purifying the hearts and minds of humanity.

The Unifying Power of Bhakti and the Future of Indian Civilization

As we reflect upon the significance of the Ram Mandir, it becomes clear that it is more than a structure; it's a symbol of unifying bhakti (devotion) and a guiding light for India's role as a spiritual leader in the world. The temple's construction, fueled by the collective devotion of people rather than government funds, epitomizes the power of faith in action. As India emerges as a major global power, the Ram Mandir stands as a reminder of the country's spiritual legacy, ensuring that India's growth remains rooted in its rich spiritual traditions.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the Ram Mandir is not just a monument but a living testament to India's spiritual depth and cultural richness. It embodies the collective aspiration of a nation to honor its divine heritage while progressing in the modern world. As Swami Mukundananda Ji reminds us, true development encompasses not just economic growth but the flourishing of our spiritual and cultural values. May the Ram Mandir continue to inspire and guide us on this path of holistic development. Namaste.

Ram Mandir: What is the ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony? Why is it important?

On 22 January, the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya will have a grand opening with the pran pratishtha ceremony. This Hindu ritual is important, as it is the moment when the ‘deity is brought to life’ and can be prayed to

Ram Mandir: What is the ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony? Why is it important?

We are days away from the historic Ram Mandir launch in Ayodhya, which is scheduled for 22 January. On this day, the idol of Lord Ram Lalla will be installed at the temple after the consecration ceremony.

And ahead of D-Day, which will see several VVIPs and celebrities from across the world in attendance, preparations are in full swing. On Tuesday (9 January), Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath inspected the temple site.

However, what exactly is a pran pratishtha ceremony? Why is such a ritual performed? We get you these answers and more.

What is pran pratishtha?

Pran pratishtha is a sacred Hindu ritual, which is performed to invoke a deity into an idol, making it sacred or divine. The term ‘pran’ translates to life whereas pratishtha means ‘establishment. Hence pran pratishtha means ‘establishing of the life force’ or bringing the ‘deity to life’.

Once the pran pratishtha is completed, the idol turns into a deity, which, in turn, can accept prayers and grant boons to worshippers.

What are the rituals before the pran pratishtha?

To bring the ‘deity to life’, several rituals need to be followed. According to experts, the number of steps involved depends on the scale of the ceremony.

For the Ram Mandir, the temple trust – Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra – said that the consecration ceremony would be preceded by seven days of ritual starting on 16 January. On the first day, the priests will begin with touching the Saryu river embankment, starting “Vishnu Puja” and conducting “Gau Dan”.

On 17 January, the selected Ram Lalla idol will be taken on a ‘shobha yatra’. It is here that the idol will be cheered by onlookers, transferring their devotion into it. In the following days, other pujas will be carried out, including the ‘nav grah shanti hawan’, which is performed to “please all the planets”.

On 20 January, the temple’s sanctum sanctorum will be washed with the waters from the Saryu river, followed by the washing of Ram Lalla’s throne.

How is the pran pratishtha ceremony conducted?

On the day of the pran pratishtha ceremony, the idol is first brought to the temple. Until then, it is submerged in various materials – water and grain.

On being brought to the temple, the idol is then bathed in milk and various fragrances are applied. It is then placed in the sanctum sanctorum and placed in the eastward direction. According to Hindu customs, all idols should face the east, as it is said to have positive energy, and also the sun rises in that direction.

After installing it in the right place, the priests start singing the hymns and mantras and performing rituals.

The final stage is the opening of the statue’s eyes and this ceremony is nuanced. According to an Indian Express report, the ceremony includes the application of anjan – similar to kohli – around the deity’s eyes, with a gold needle. This process is carried out from behind, as it is believed that if one looks into God’s eyes the moment they open, their brilliance can be too much to take.

Once this is done, the idol is believed to have been brought to life and can be prayed to.

How long does the pran pratishtha last?

It is said that once the pran pratishtha is completed, it remains for eternity.

What’s special about D-Day?

In light of this historic day and anticipating huge crowds, the state of Uttar Pradesh has announced a holiday for all schools and colleges. Moreover, Chief Minister Adityanath said that there would be no sale of liquor across the state on 22 January.

All government buildings will also bedecked on the day and a firework show has also been planned for that day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the consecration of the Ram Mandnir in Ayodhya. Invitation cards for the ceremony have been sent out to over 7,000 guests , including 3,000 VVIPs, including priests, donors, and several politicians.

In the meantime, the temple is also getting ready for the big moment. A 620 kg bell, originating from Tamil Nadu, has been installed at the religious site earlier last week and on Tuesday, the first swarn dwar (golden door) was installed. Reports say that as many as 13 golden doors would be installed in the Ram Temple within the next three days.

The Ram Mandir, constructed in the traditional Nagara style , is a three-storied shrine, measuring 380 feet in length (east-west direction), 250 feet in width, and 161 feet in height. It has a total of 392 pillars and 44 doors. It features five Mandaps (halls) – Nritya Mandap, Rang Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Prarthna and Kirtan Mandaps.
