23 March Pakistan Day Speech in English Essay Resolution Day

This 23 date in month of March is an important one in the history of Pakistan. This is remembered as Republic day or Pakistan Resolution day. This day is celebrated to remember the efforts and the achievements of the Muslims of sub-continents. On this date, our great leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah gave the historic speech and presented the idea of a separate nation. Before this resolution accepted, the Muslims of sub-continent had no hope, no goals, no views and no future. Moreover, the Muslim politicians were remained in the hands of people with conflicting inclinations and interests. As the Muslim League passed the resolution, the Hindu correspondents began condemning and starts calling it Pakistan Resolution.

Hindus also criticized Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the other prominent leaders of that time. The purpose of mentioning these sacrifices is that our leaders and forerunner faced a lot of criticism and made endless efforts to give us an Islamic independent state.

So 23 rd march is the day of pride, day of feelings for every Pakistani as on this day a dream of an independent state was laid for Muslims so that they can live on the teachings of Islam, can freely follow their culture, traditions and have their own life style. On this day all the Muslims gathered together on one platform to raise voice for Resolution whether they had different mindset, speaks different languages or belong to different cultures and due to their efforts they were accepted as a separate state.

Every year this day is celebrated with full zeal and zest and people of Pakistan express their love and feelings for their beloved land. Now it is the time to again show unity that our leaders had made. Followed by 23 rd March, 1940 Pakistan became the first ever nation to become the first Muslim Republic of the world on March 23 rd 1956. Therefore this date in this month had two important events.

From last so many years a public holiday is announced every years, military parade is also arranged to pay tribute and salute for all the ones who paid their role for independence of Pakistan. On this day every single Pakistani should make a promise to work for the betterment of Pakistan as our Quaid dreamed. In addition, should also make steps to free this country from the menace of extremism and militancy which has ruined our country badly.

Furthermore, on this day we must consider all causes of the destruction and make a strategy to eliminate them from the society and also take an action against the people who are destroying the Pakistan’s sovereignty, against the fraudulent people, injustice and terrorism to bring peace and give a good message across the world.

Pakistan Independence Day – August 14, 2024

Pakistan Independence Day on August 14 could be considered a double day of liberation. Muslim Indians also fought to be free of British rule and later re-armed to battle for their own nation-state, present day Pakistan —  once part of the Indian subcontinent. After the British put down the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Crown assumed full control during the British Raj period. This lasted until Pakistan’s independence in 1947.  The Mountbatten Plan split Pakistan (comprised of West and East Pakistan) from India, creating an independent Muslim nation. In 1971, East Pakistan gained its own independence, becoming known as Bangladesh.  Today, West Pakistan is known simply as Pakistan.

The main Independence Day ceremony ceremony is organized in Islamabad, where the national flag is hoisted at the Parliament and Presidency buildings. This is follow up by the national anthem and widely circulated and televised speeches by the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan.

“Unity, Faith, and Discipline” is the guiding principle and national motto of Pakistan. The country celebrates its Independence Day on August 14.

History of Pakistan Independence Day

The creation of Pakistan is an astounding one, and quite a unique occurrence in modern history. 

Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh were originally part of one giant territory called the Indian subcontinent. Ever since the religion of Islam was introduced and embraced in the subcontinent, peace was disturbed due to clashes and the oppression of Muslims by Hindus. To safeguard the Muslim minority, intellectual thought and philosophies were set into motion after the War of Independence in 1857.

The circumstances were not in favor of the Muslim community but, with courage and faith, the downtrodden Muslims residing in the subcontinent were successful in actualizing their dreams of freedom. In 1906, the All-India Muslim League was founded and, on October 1 the same year, the first delegation of 36 Muslim leaders presented their demand to the viceroy of India at Simla for a separate state for Muslims. 

The concept of Pakistan and liberation for Muslims would have remained a pipe dream, had it not been for one man’s superhuman efforts and struggle to make it a reality. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a barrister and politician, who later on became the father of the nation of Pakistan. Jinnah was the leader of the All-India Muslim League from 1913 onwards, until Pakistan’s independence. 

Allama Muhammad Iqbal was another visionary who propelled the idea of the separation of Muslims from India. In his presidential address on December 29, 1930, at Allahabad, Iqbal proposed the idea. The Allahabad Address is now revolutionary in history. The name ‘Pakistan’ first appeared in a pamphlet called “Now Or Never” in 1933. 

It was quite a big day in history. Prominent Muslim leaders from all over India attended the session, and there was finally a legitimate solution to the centuries-old struggle of Muslims to gain sovereignty and freedom. On February 20, 1947, the turning point happened when British Prime Minister Clement Attlee made an announcement to grant India complete self-governance by June 1948. After multiple consultations with the British government and Congress leaders, the last viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten, released the ‘June Plan.’

Both India’s Congress and the Muslim League welcomed Mountbatten’s plan. In July 1947, the British parliament introduced the Indian Independence Act. Separate provisional governments were established for Pakistan and India on July 20. Finally, the great subcontinent of British India was partitioned into the two countries of India and Pakistan on August 14, 1947. 

The partition was full of bloodshed and carnage. Since the inception of the idea of a separate nation for Muslims, Hindu brutality intensified and there was great opposition to Jinnah and the rest of the Muslim leaders’ ideas to create a sovereign identity for Muslims. Lineages and families were destroyed and tales of partitions are still collected and archived today.

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Pakistan on Saturday marked the 75th anniversary of its creation and independence from Britain with a series of celebrations and military ceremonies.

At dawn, a 31-gun salute in Islamabad marked the start of festivities to commemorate August 14 1947, the day colonial rule ended.

Overnight, revellers poured onto streets throughout the country despite monsoon rains, waving the olive green and white flag and setting off firecrackers.

The chief feature of the celebrations was a national flag hoisting ceremony at the President House in Islamabad attended by President Dr Arif Alvi, among others, Radio Pakistan reported.

Similar flag hoisting ceremonies were also held at provincial, divisional and district headquarters-level across the country. Buildings, streets, and markets were illuminated to mark the event.

‘ON PATH OF DEVELOPMENT’: ALVI

Addressing the gathering, Alvi, who was the chief guest at the event, congratulated the nation on the completion of 74 years of independence.

He observed the country was on the right track and all set to become a stronger economy, stressing the need to inject hope into the people and reject the propaganda and fake news maligning the country.

He pointed out Pakistan successfully curbed terrorism, observing the security forces and the society deserved appreciation for defeating the menace.

‘NAYA PAKISTAN’ MEANS ECONOMY: IMRAN

In his message, Prime Minister Imran Khan said as the nation hoisted the national flag to mark the occasion, “we must reiterate the firm resolve to uphold our national values of unity, faith and discipline as envisioned” by Jinnah.

Imran said Pakistan consistently stressed there was no military solution to the conflict and reaffirmed it will continue lending support to a negotiated political settlement for lasting peace and stability in its war-torn neighbour.

“We want peace within and peace without, to pursue our socio-economic agenda. The Naya Pakistan has shifted its focus from geo-politics to geo-economics, with the well-being and welfare of our people as the topmost priority,” he said.

SAUDI SENDS GREETINGS:

King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia sent felicitation messages to Alvi on the eve of independence day.

According to the kingdom’s official news agency, SPA , the royals wished the president good health and happiness while hoping for steady progress and prosperity for the people of Pakistan.

The two countries have always cherished close diplomatic relations and are collaborating with each other in a number of areas.

صدر محترم و معزز حاضرین! السلام علیکم! کم لوگ جانتے ہوں گے کہ ہمارا پیارا وطن پاکستان خدا کا ایسا عطیہ انعام ہے جو نزول رحمت کی رات یعنی 27 ماہ رمضان جو شب قدر کہلاتی ہے عالم وجود میں آیا تھا۔ جی ہاں اتفاق سے 14 اگست 1947 کا دن 27 ماہ رمضان کو آیا تھا گویا پاکستان کا تحفہ اللہ پاک نے بھی لیلۃ القدر کو عنایت فرمایا تھا جو انتہائی نیک شگون بات ہے۔ میرے خیال میں 14اگست یا 27 ماہ رمضان کو اللہ کے فرشتے آسمان کی بلندیوں سے اترے اور ایشیا پر ایک نئے ملک کی لکیر کھینچ گئے۔ ایسا ملک جس کے بانیوں اور باسیوں نے تحریک پاکستان کے دوران کئی بار اپنے اللہ سے یہ عہد باندھا کہ اس ملک پر ہم اپنے مالک رب الکریم اور اپنے پیارے نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی شریعت کا نفاذکریں گے۔

قائد اعظم نے اپنی قوم سے اپنے ایک خطاب کے دوران اعلان کیا تھا کہ” پاکستان کا حصول محض زمین کا ایک ٹکڑا نہیں بلکہ ایک تجربہ گاہ کی حیثیت سے چاہتے ہیں، جہاں ہم اپنے اللّٰہ اور اسکے حبیب صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی بتائی ہوئی راہوں اور اس کے اصولوں کو عملی جامہ پہنا سکیں” نزول رحمت بازی نے اس عہد کو شرف قبولیت بخشا اور ہم دولت بیدار سے نواز دیے گئے جس کا نام پاکستان ہے۔ صدر محترم! سچ تو یہ ہے کہ بر صغیر کے مسلمانوں نے کوئی دو سو سال تک یہ خواب دیکھا تھا اور اس خواب کی تعبیر دیکھنے کے لئے کئی خونریزہ جنگیں لڑی گئیں۔ جی ہاں شاہ آباد اور بریلی کے تین سو تیرہ مجاہدین نے دشت و بیاباں سے گزر کر بالاکوٹ کی زمین کو لہو سے لالہ زار بنایا۔ علمائے حق نے مالٹا کی ہولناک اسیری جھیلی، اپنے عزیزوں اور اپنے جگر گوشوں کے ٹکڑے کروائے اور اس تاریخی سعی بسیار، بے مثل قربانی کے بعد وہ شب قدر آئی جو بلاشبہ نزولی رحمت سے کم نہیں۔ سامعین کرام مان جائیے یہ خوش کن حقیقت حضرت کی آزادی کی یہ نعمت ہمیں بے مثل قربانیوں کے صلہ میں میسر آئی۔ الحمدللہ پاکستان کے چمن کو اس کے مالیوں نے پھول سے بچوں کے معصوم خون کیساتھ سینچا۔ اس گلستان کی آبیاری ہزاروں بے گناہ نو جوانوں اور بزرگوں کے رنگین لہو سے کی گئی۔ پاکستان کے وجود کی خاطر بے شمار سہاگنوں کے سہاگ لوٹے، لوگوں نے اپنے معصوم جگر گوشوں کو اپنی آنکھوں کے سامنے سنگین کی نوک پر چلاتے اور تڑپتے دیکھا۔ بتائے محترم وہ آزادی حیرت جو اتنی قربانیوں کے بعد نصیب ہوئی کوئی سنگدل ہو گا جو اس متاع بے بہا کو دل وجان سے پیار نہ کرے۔ ہم سب کو ایک شاعر دردمند کے اس دعوی سے مکمل اتفاق ہونا چاہئے کہ پیارے وطن!

تیری بنیاد میں ہے لاکھوں شہیدوں کا لہو ہم تجھے گنج دو عالم سے گراں پاتے ہیں صدر محترم! میرے قائد نے ایک دفعہ اپنی قوم سے خطاب کے دوران فرمایا تھا کہ پاکستان ایک باغ کی مانند ہے اور ہم پاکستانی اس باغ کے مالی، لہذا ایک فرض شناس باغباں کی حیثیت سے ہمیں اس پاک چمن کی حفاظت کرنی ہے اور آبیاری کا فرض خلوص و محبت سے انجام دینا چاہیے۔ سامعین کرام! مادر وطن کے ساتھ عقیدت و محبت کے اس طرح اظہار اور پیار کے بعد اب ہم اس کی تاریخ پر نظر ڈالتے ہیں۔ لوگ عموماً تحریک پاکستان کو 23مارچ 1940سے 14اگست 1947 سات سالوں میں مقید کرتے ہیں حالانکہ ایسا نہیں ہے۔ پاکستان کا قیام صرف انہی دو تاریخی ایام کی تقسیس کا محتاج نہیں، پاکستان اس روز کا قائم ہو گیا تھا بلکہ قائد عظیم کے الفاظ میں پاکستان کی بنیاد اس دن رکھ دی گئی تھی جس دن ہندوستان کے پہلے باشندے نے کلمہ لا الہ الا اللہ محمد الرسول اللہ پڑھا تھا۔

دراصل پاکستان نام ہے تاریخ کے تسلسل کا، تحریک پاکستان درحقیقت صدیوں کی مسلسل جدوجہد پر محیط ہے۔ اس کا آغاز انگریزوں کی ہندوستان میں آمد اور مغلیہ سلطنت کے زوال یعنی اٹھارویں صدی عیسوی سے ہوچکا تھا۔ اس تحریک کے اولین مظہر تھے جنہوں نے مسلمانوں کے لئے اسلامی مملکت کے قیام کی کوشش کی اللہ تعالی کے اس شعر کی شہادت کے بعد یہ تحریک کچھ عرصہ کے لیے زیر زمین اپنا جادو جگاتی رہی۔ جی ہاں بالکل پہاڑی ندی کی طرح اٹکتی پچکتی اور لڑکھتیہوئی شاہ ولی اللہ اور سید احمد شہید کی تحریکوں سے عملی ویو سے ٹکرانے کے بعد یہ تحریک پھر کچھ وقفے میں زیر زمین میں پلتی بڑھتی تحریک خلافت کی شکل میں پھر منظر عام پر آگئی۔ علی برادران نے اس تحریک کی خوب آبیاری کی ان کے بعد تحریک پاکستان کا پرچم علی گڑھ کے مجاہدین کے ہاتھ آیا۔ سرسیداحمدخان، ڈپٹی نذیر احمد، شبلی اور حالی جیسے مادران خفا کی کوشش نے اسکی آبیاری کا فریضہ خوب اچھی طرح ادا کیا۔ اس کے بعد علامہ اقبال اور پھر مولانا ظفر علی خان سے ہوتا ہوا آخر کار اس قافلہ سخت جان کی سر براہی جناح جیسے مرد جری کے کندھوں پر آ پڑی۔ الحمدللہ بس اس کارواں کو اصل امیر مل گیا بقول اقبال؀

ع ہوتا ہے جادؤ پیماں پھر کارواں ہمارا

صدر محترم! سچ تو یہ ہے کی یہ ہماری پاک سرزمین محمود غزنوی کے اس خواب کی تعبیر ہے جب اس مرد مجاہد نے سومنات کے بھارتی پتھر کو پاش پاش کیا تھا۔ اس مقصد خون کا نذرانہ جو ظالم انگریز کے مد مقابل سرنگاپٹم کی دیواروں کے نیچے بہایا تھا۔ محترم سامعین مان جائیے یہ حقیقت لاہور کے عالمگیری شاہی مسجد اور دو قدم آگے مینار پاکستان کے درمیان جو تھوڑا سا فاصلہ ہے، اہل جنوں نے یہ مختصر راستہ خون کےبے شمار دریا عبور کرنے کے بعد طے کیا تھا۔ اس طرح اس میں نہ جانے کتنے مشکل مراحل آئے، کتنی بار عشق کا امتحان ہوا۔ اس راستے پر قائد اعظم اور ان کے رفقا اہل کار کی فکری کاوشوں کے نہ جانے کتنے انمنٹ نقوش اس پاک دھرتی کی بنیادوں پر ثبت ہوۓ۔ اس راستے سے منزل مراد تک پہنچنے والوں نے اپنی نیک تمنا اور آرزوؤں پر نہ جانے کتنے پھول نچھاور کیے اور پھر اس راستے کو نہ جانے کتنے گمنام شہیدوں نے اپنے خون سے لالہ زار بنایا۔ القصہ تحریک پاکستان کی صدیوں پر محیط ان کٹھن راہوں کی کھا کے ذروں کے ساتھ ایثار اور قربانی کی ایک طویل داستان وابستہ ہے۔ بس صدر محترم! آج کے دن جب ہم یوم پاکستان منارہےہیں آئیے سمیع کل کے ساتھ عہد کریں کہ بادشاہی مسجد سے مینار پاکستان کی اس سے کھلی راہ پر ہم بھی اپنے دو قدم ڈال کر پیارے پاکستان کی محبت و عقیدت کا عملی دم بھریں گے انشاء اللہ۔ پاکستان۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔پائندہ باد

14 th August is an auspicious day in the history of Pakistan, for freedom from servitude is one of the great achievements for a nation. Since 1947, this day is celebrated all around the country with great zeal, vigor and enthusiasm. This essay does not attempt to provide the state history regarding the Independence Day available in the text books rather to offer an alternative perspective to understand the factors working behind the creation of Pakistan apart from the efforts made by the Great Leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and to analyze the extent to which this country is still living under the impression of colonization. Furthermore, the essay will attempt to investigate whether the nation's manner of celebrating Independence complements with the sacrifice and trauma faced by their ancestors during the havoc of Partition.

This essay argues both France and India used a language of terror and fear and constructed the figure of the goonda as the Other of democracy to undermine the referendum and associated decolonial movements that questioned the inevitability of state-based nationalism.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, as postcolonial regimes in Africa and Asia hauled down imperial iconography, to the surprise and approval of many Western observers, India evidenced little interest in sweeping away remnants of its colonial heritage. From the late 1950s onwards, however, calls for the removal British imperial statuary from India’s public spaces came to represent an increasingly important component in a broader dialogue between central and state governments, political parties, the media, and the wider public, on the legacy of British colonialism in the subcontinent. This paper examines the responses of the ruling Congress Party and the British government, between 1947 and 1970, to escalating pressure from within India to replace British statuary with monuments celebrating Indian nationalism. In doing so, it highlights the significant scope that existed for non-state actors in India and the United Kingdom with a stake in the cultural politics of decolonisation, to disrupt the smooth running of bi-lateral relations, and, in Britain’s case, to undermine increasingly tenuous claims of continued global relevance. Post-war British governments believed that the United Kingdom’s relationship with India could be leveraged, at least in part, to offset the nation’s waning international prestige. In fact, as the fate of British statuary in India makes clear, this proved to be at least as problematic and flawed a strategy in the two decades after 1947, as it had been in those before.

Shab-e-Barat

Unlike other national holidays of Pakistan, Shab-e-Barat is considered an optional holiday in terms of going to work. The festival is celebrated on the night between the 14 th and 15 th of the month of Sha’ban and is regarded as a night when fortunes are decided, and Allah forgives sinners.

The South Asian sweet known as halwa is associated with Shab-e-Barat: families enjoy it amongst each other and donate some to the poor.

Mela Chiraghan

Translating to the “ Festival of Lights ,” Mela Chiraghan is a 3-day festival commemorating the death of S hah Hussain , a Sufi saint and poet that lived in Lahore in the 16 th century.

The celebration takes places at Madho lal Hussain’s shrine , which is one of my favorite places to visit in Lahore . The zealous event–which is located in the Baghbanpura section of the city–is filled with dhamal (Sufi meditative dance), live music, oil lamps for days, and as is common at Sufi celebrations, hashish.

This Pakistani mela used to be the largest Punjabi festival, but now ranks second. While it used to take place in the famed Shalimar Gardens, it was moved to the shrine in 1958 .

Nevertheless, the Mela is one of the oldest continuing celebrations of the Subcontinent, and the story of Shah Hussain is quite a compelling one.

You see, the shrine is actually named Madho lal Hussain, which fuses the name of Shah himself and his Hindu lover, Madho.

Shah Hussain was a pioneer of Punjabi Kafi poetry , and Madho started off as a follower of his work. Their relationship bloomed despite serious societal taboos, and today the shrine symbolizes unity against all odds.

Personally, I’m a sucker for anything Sufi as the poetry, dhamal, and beautiful shrines are nothing short of enchanting.

So while I might be a bit biased, this festival of Pakistan is truly one you MUST attend… especially if you’re looking to experience something really unique on your Pakistan itinerary !

Lal Shahbaz Qalandar Urs

I personally think all Urs celebrations are worth seeing, but the one of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar might be one of the most fantastic in all of Pakistan.

Lal Shahbaz Qalandar is perhaps one of the most popular Sufi saints in South Asia, and his annual Urs mela attracts nearly 1 million pilgrims from all across Pakistan.

Lal Shahbaz Qalandar lived from 1177 to 1274 and was known to preach religious tolerance. In fact, he became both a scholar of religion and a polyglot.

His beautiful shrine- which is located in the town of Sehwan in Sindh province – becomes the annual centerpiece of a town-wide mela.

Dhamal and qawwali are performed in fervor- malangs (wandering Sufi holy men) consider this to be the chief shrine of the Sufi order.

Folk singing and traditional Sindhi wrestling can also be seen throughout the 3-day-festival, which is certainly a unique and rare event that should be on your Pakistan bucket list!

If you do plan to go, you should definitely try to book a hotel several months in advance. Accommodation is very limited in Sehwan , and spots fill up quick!

You don’t want to be stuck without a room in boiling Sindhi temps.

Ramadan is the 9 th month of the Islamic calendar and is observed throughout the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam , and all able-bodied adults fast of both food and water from sunrise to sunset for the duration of the 30 days.

Aside from food and drink, tobacco must also be refrained from during the month of Ramadan. Pakistani Muslims devote this month to salat (prayer), recitation of the Quran , and the doing of charitable deeds.

Fasting is not for 30 days straight though! During Ramadan, two meals occur each day . Suhoor occurs just before dawn and is followed by the first prayer of the day while Iftar is eaten at sunset.

So you might be wondering what does this mean for travelers? While restaurants and food stalls will be closed during the day , it should still be possible to buy packaged snacks.

Many tourists report friendly folks going out of their way to help them find food, so no need to fear going hungry while traveling in Pakistan during Ramadan!

Youm-e-Ali is an important religious holiday in Pakistan , particularly for Shia Muslims. The day commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali, cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad.

The day is of utmost importance for Shias as they believe that Hazrat Ali was the rightful, immediate successor to the Prophet.

Like Ashura and Chehlum, Youm-e-Ali is marked by processions of mourning. Mourners cry, beat their chests, and often carry a smaller, symbolic coffin through the streets.

But unlike other religious holidays of Pakistan, keep in mind that Youm-e-Ali is NOT a joyous event .

Eid-ul-Azha

Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid ul Azha is one of the most important religious festivals in Pakistan.

Eid ul Azha commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son at Allah’s command, though in the end, Allah intervened with the provision of a lamb to be sacrificed instead.

As such, the three-day event is marked by the slaughtering of a sheep, cow, goat or in some cases-  camel.

If you’re a traveler looking to experience Eid in Pakistan, you won’t have to look far! Pakistanis are incredibly hospitable and from my experience, many families will be happy for you to share in the festivities.

After the slaughter, which usually takes place in the early morning (though can occur later in the day), the meat is divided into thirds: 1/3 is kept at home, 1/3 is given to the poor, and the last 1/3 is shared with friends and relatives.

Though some families raise their sacrificial animal up over the months preceding Eid al Azha, it’s also possible to buy one last minute.

Like other Eids, Eid ul Azha is a multi-day event , with the first two being a public holiday in Pakistan.

Travel Tip: Though Eid ul Azha is celebrated across the country–it’s even something you can see in Hunza Valley –I highly recommend travelers head to Lahore to fully immerse themselves in this unique Pakistani festival!

Baba Bulleh Shah Urs

Another Urs festival?

You got it- there’s tons of them in Pakistan! Baba Bulleh Shah was a famous Sufi philosopher and poet who lived in the early 1700’s. Like Shah Hussain who lived before him, Bulleh Shah was also known to employ the Kafi verse form in his work.

Aside from his poetry, he emphasized and practiced non-violence, which was especially well-received as he lived in a time of intense fighting between Muslims and Sikhs.

Thus, his popularity stretches across religions and many come to commemorate the anniversary of his death.

The Urs takes place at his shrine in Kasur, a small city in Punjab about an hour from Lahore. Like other Urs fests, you can find yourself amongst glittering lights, qawwali music, and of course: malangs performing dhamal.

Ashura takes place from the eve of the 9 th of Muharram – a holy month for all Muslims- through the 10 th .  But what really is this national holiday of Pakistan?

Ashura is a major holiday for all Muslims, though it’s particularly significant for Shia Muslims . Ashura marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali – grandson of Prophet Muhammad- in the battle of Karbala.

It’s important to note that while Ashura can be classified as a holiday, it is actually a period of intense grief and mourning for Shia Muslims in Pakistan and beyond-unlike some other Pakistani festivals, you won’t find joy here .

In Pakistani cities, large processions take place on Ashura: on the eve of the 9 th of Muharram, thousands of mourners flood the streets in organized events where poetry is read, songs are sung, and many men engage in self-mutilation in memoriam of Hussain’s death.

Due to large Shia populations, you can also encounter Ashura processions throughout Gilgit Baltistan, everywhere from Hunza Valley to Gilgit, Skardu, and Astore.

The evening is also marked by the decoration of a white horse called Zulijana . Zulijana represents the horse Imam Hussain rode into battle and such symbolism is a notable part of the procession.

Like many Pakistani holidays , cities are your best bet for really taking in Ashura. Keep in mind that, due to safety precautions, cell service is often shut down in metro areas during the commemorations.

If you do plan to attend, I recommend not heading out alone and to have a meeting spot in case you get lost.

Though security is a bit amped up during Ashura, travelers curious to see an authentic Pakistani cultural event will definitely appreciate the experience.

  Chehlum

Chehlum takes place exactly 40 days after Ashura , and the two look very similar in practice. The 40 days comes from the usual length of mourning after death in Muslim tradition.

As with Ashura, Chehlum is marked by large processions in cities , where mourners often carry flags and tabuds – a symbolic coffin of Imam Hussain.

Chehlum takes place in the month of Safar, the second month of the Islamic Calendar- though like most holidays in Pakistan, the official date changes each year.

As a tourist, the same protocols taken to observe Ashura can be used during Chehlum.

Data Darbar Urs

One of the many religious festivals in Pakistan, the Data Darbar Urs commemorates the death anniversary of Sufi saint Data Ganj Baksh , who is believed to have lived in Pakistan in the 11 th century.

His shrine, Data Darbar, is the largest in all of South Asia and is considered to be the most sacred place in Lahore .

Though you can visit the shrine 24/7, attending the Urs ceremony is a whole new experience. Over 1 million devotees come during the 3-day festival, many of which stay overnight on the shrine’s grounds.

Unlike other Sufi shrines, Data Darbar has segregated entrances for men and women, though it’s still possible for women to see his tomb. On the streets that surround the complex, you can see malangs performing dhamal and take a gander at qawwali performances.

Eid Milad-un-Nabi

Perhaps the most decorative of all the festivals of Pakistan, Eid Milad un Nabi is the observance of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad and is known for being celebrated with millions of lights-literally.

Pakistani cities literally become awash with color as strings of lights and garnishments brighten up buildings and winding streets in the week before the holiday. Fireworks are lit, joyous parades occur, and cakes are baked to celebrate the Prophet’s day of birth.

Celebrating Eid Milad un Nabi is a MUST if you happen to be in Pakistan at the time- we intentionally chose to stay longer just to see it and it was beyond worth it.

Though Eid Milad-un-Nabi is a national holiday of Pakistan, if you really want to see the decorations in their full glory you’ll have to head to a city. I might be biased, but Lahore’s Walled City is THE place to be. It was truly lit- both literally and figuratively!

Cultural Festivals of Pakistan

If you’re wondering when the best time to visit Pakistan is, it’s during one of these epic cultural fests!

Basant is (was) a kite festival in Pakistan marked by the flying of… you guessed it: kites! This historic Punjabi festival celebrates the start of spring, with its traditional “hub” being in central Lahore.

Despite being a tradition since the 19 th century, unfortunately, the Basant festival in Lahore is not what it once was.

In 2005, the Pakistani government banned kite manufacturing and flying, and then Basant in 2007 due to increasing injuries from electrocution, dangerous types of kite strings, falls, and more.

Sadly, as of 2022, the celebration has yet to be reinstated – a move that has devastated a once-thriving industry. Today, kite flying remains illegal in Lahore, though many still choose to fly. We can only hope that one of the most beautiful festivals of Pakistan is somehow able to be revived safely.

When was it?

When it was celebrated, Basant typically took place in late January or early February .

The Sibi Mela is a Pakistani cultural festival that’s been occurring in Sibi, Baluchistan for several centuries. Today, the festival is known for its animal markets, camel racing, folk dancing, and local handicrafts.

This Pakistani mela usually takes place near the end of February, when temperatures are still manageable in the region. The 5-day event is a prime opportunity to experience the rich culture of Balochistan, and is an important provincial holiday for Balochis.

Though this part of Pakistan is relatively safe , it will be difficult to attend the Sibi Mela as a foreigner as most of Balochistan is restricted.

Though an NOC might be technically required, those can be tricky if not impossible to get. Nevertheless, Pakistanis are free to attend- Sibi is located approximately 3 hours from the Sindhi city of Sukkur and 3 hours from the Balochi capital Quetta.

Kalash Festivals

The Kalash are a small and very unique ethnic group that resides in the Chitral district of KPK. They have a culture and dress that is very distinct from other Pakistanis and are known for their colorful festivals… and their homemade mulberry wine!

The Kalash have three festivals each year that are open to the public, all of which are interesting events to experience in Pakistan.

The festivals are:

Chilam Joshi- Chilam Joshi welcomes spring with hours upon hours of music and dancing. This is the most popular Kalash festivals of Pakistan in terms of tourism.

If you’re looking to attend, be sure to reserve a place to stay well in advance- both foreign and domestic tourists flock to Chilam Joshi these days!

Uchal- Whereas Chilam Joshi celebrates the coming of spring, Uchal is all about harvest season. Along with traditional Kalash partying, special foods are prepared for this event including cheese, buttermilk and cornbread.

As there are numerous valleys and villages in the Kalash region, this festival moves around a bunch, though you can expect things to start off in the largest valley- Bumburet.

Choimus- The coldest of all the Kalash festivals of Pakistan, Choimus takes place in December and celebrates Balomain, the heroic demigod of the Kalash. Like the other fests, special food is eaten, and many hours of dancing and singing are performed.

Some say this is the most sacred of all the Kalash festivals, and due to the time of year, it attracts the least amount of tourists. So if you’re looking to see an authentic Pakistani mela- this might be your best bet!

Shandur Polo Festival

Looking to attend one of the epic and famous festivals of Pakistan ? Well look no further than the Shandur Polo Fest- which happens to be held at the highest polo ground in the world!

The fest takes place on the Shandur Pass, a beautiful high-mountain pass that connects Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Gilgit-Baltistan.

At 3700 m, you’ll be able to say you witnessed the world’s highest-altitude games of polo. This historic Pakistani festival has been held annually since 1936 and gives onlookers a chance to see polo played in its rawest form.

Players from Gilgit and Chitral battle it out, while folk music, dancing and camping can also be enjoyed during the 3-day event.

If you do attend, I highly recommend driving through the entirety of stunning Shandur Pass. To really maximize your trip, visiting Phander Valley on the Eastern side of Shandur is definitely worth the drive!

Or you can head further to Yasin Valley, which is home to some of the best treks in Pakistan .

Broghil Festival

Looking to experience an offbeat festival of Pakistan? Head up to Broghil, an extremely remote valley with incredibly unique traditions.

Broghil Valley is located at the far north of Pakistan’s Chitral District and shares a border with Afghanistan’s peaceful Wakhan Corridor.

Every year, the Broghil Festival- which features epic games of Yak Polo – is beginning to attract more and more visitors.

The fest is held in Ishkarwaz , which can only be reached by Jeep from the small transit town of Mastuj.

A tent village is set up where onlookers can camp and experience traditional Wakhi folk music and dancing.

Though foreigners can visit Yarkhun Valley , getting to Broghil is very hard, but Pakistani citizens shouldn’t have this issue.

National Festivals of Pakistan

The following are national festivals in Pakistan that are celebrated across the country by people of all religions and ethnic groups.

Pakistan Day

While Independence Day celebrates Pakistan’s official independence, Pakistan Day ( also called Republic Day) commemorates the adoption of the Lahore Resolution and the adoption of the first constitution of Pakistan.

The resolution- which passed on March 23, 1940- sought to create a separate homeland for the Muslims of what was then British India whereas the adoption of the first constitution of Pakistan on March 23, 1956 made Pakistan the world’s first Islamic Republic.

The day is considered a national festival of Pakistan and is marked by military parades in large cities and of course, lots of green and white décor!

Pakistani Independence Day

Pakistan’s Independence Day is an outright party, especially in cities! People celebrate at home, attend parades, join other parades with their own vehicles, and of course: wear lots of green!

  In the days and weeks leading up to the event, which celebrates the day on which Pakistan became an independent nation, shops sell all types of items bearing Pakistan’s green and white colors. Cities and towns dazzle with lights and flags of all sizes- it’s truly a sight to see!

If you’re looking to experience this festival of Pakistan in all its glory- head to the city! In Lahore, hordes of motorbikers head through Mall Road, blaring plastic horns and honking the ones on their vehicles.

But even if you can’t make it to a city- you’re sure to experience all the Pakistani pride and excitement no matter where you celebrate from.

If you could only attend ONE festival of Pakistan, I’d recommend picking either Mela Chiraghan or the Urs of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar . Both are seriously epic in every sense of the word.

But regardless of which one you pick, it’s sure to be an interesting time–as surprising as it might seem, Pakistan knows how to party!

Some people dress up in green and white to show their love for the country while others visit national monuments like Minar-e-Pakistan and Quaid-e-Azam’s Mausoleum. Many people also use this opportunity to meet up with relatives and give gifts to their loved ones.

Children also enjoy this day to the fullest. There are functions arranged across all schools in the country where children sing national songs, dress up in green and white and enjoy scrumptious meals. They do not have regular classes on this day which allows them to have free time off due to which children look forward to the Independence Day. There is also a trend in many homes to decorate their houses with flags and paper flags and from adults to children everyone participates in doing the decorations. Such is the spirit of the people of Pakistan as patriotism runs in their veins.

It is necessary that people of the country pay tribute to their heroes as it was only their efforts which allowed them to have an independent nation. The people of Pakistan also remember and pay tribute to those who dedicated their lives to earn freedom for them. A change of guard ceremony is conducted on the national monuments of the country including the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah the founder of Pakistan and at the Mausoleum of Allama Iqbal who was also the father of the ideology of Pakistan. There are various Independence Day programs aired on the television throughout the day and multiple concerts held during night time in various parts of the country.

Canadian Arrests Highlight Alleged Gang Role in India’s Intelligence Operations

India’s external spy agency, the Research and Analysis Wing, has long been accused of tapping into criminal networks to carry out operations in South Asia. Is the agency now doing similar operations in the West?

Months after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada accused India’s government of plotting a murder on Canadian soil — plunging diplomatic relations between the two countries to their lowest level ever — the first arrests in the killing, which came on Friday, did little to demystify the basis of his claim.

The police didn’t offer clues or present any evidence that India had orchestrated the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh nationalist leader who was gunned down at the temple he led in Surrey, British Columbia, in June. What they did say was that three Indian men had committed the killing and that an investigation into India’s role was ongoing.

Before the arrests, Indian officials had maintained that Canada was trying to drag New Delhi into what it described as essentially a rivalry between gangs whose members were long wanted for crimes back in India.

After the arrests, a report from the CBC, Canada’s public broadcasting corporation , based on anonymous sources, also said the suspects belonged to an Indian criminal gang.

But analysts and former officials said that the possible role of a gang in the killing does not necessarily mean the Indian government was not involved in the crime.

India’s external spy agency, the Research and Analysis Wing, or RAW, has long been suspected of tapping into criminal networks to carry out operations in its immediate neighborhood in South Asia while maintaining deniability.

Canada’s accusation, if proven, that India orchestrated the Nijjar killing — and a similar accusation made soon after by the United States in a different case — may suggest that RAW is now extending its playbook of working with criminals to carry out operations in Western countries, analysts said.

U.S. officials have produced strong evidence in their accusation that an agent of the Indian government participated in a foiled attempt to assassinate a dual American-Canadian citizen. And Canada and allied officials have maintained that Canada has evidence supporting Mr. Trudeau’s claim that Indian agents carried out Mr. Nijjar’s killing.

But the Canadian failure to reveal any evidence that India took part, nine months after Mr. Trudeau’s explosive allegation, leaves the killing of Mr. Nijjar in the realm of accusations and counter-accusation in what is a highly tense political environment in both countries, analysts said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been flexing his muscles as a nationalist strongman, pitching himself during his ongoing campaign for a third-term in office as a protector of India who would go as far as it takes to target security threats.

During speeches, he has boasted about how his government eliminates enemies by “descending in their homes.” While he has made those references in relation to the country’s archenemy — Pakistan — right wing accounts on social media had celebrated the slaying of Mr. Nijjar in Canada as a similar reach of Mr. Modi’s long arm.

Mr. Trudeau, on the other hand, had been facing criticism of weakness in the face of Chinese election interference activities on Canadian soil, and his getting ahead of the Nijjar killing was seen as compensating for that.

Canadian police announced on Friday that they had arrested the three Indian men in Edmonton, Alberta, the same day and charged them with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the killing of Mr. Nijjar. The suspects had been living in Canada for three to five years but were not permanent residents of Canada, the police said.

The gang that the CBC reported that the hit-men are connected to is led by Lawrence Bishnoi, 31, who is accused of several cases of murder, extortion and narcotics trafficking. He has orchestrated much of it from an Indian jail, where he has been held since 2014 . His members are seen as being behind the murder of a popular Punjabi rapper, and threats of attacks on Bollywood celebrities.

Indian security officials have frequently arrested criminals connected to Mr. Bishnoi, often with allegations that the gang’s network stretched as far as Canada and overlapped with those promoting from Canadian soil the cause of Khalistan, a once deeply violent separatist movement with the goal of carving out the Indian state of Punjab as an independent nation.

A large Sikh diaspora resides in Canada, many of them having migrated there after a violent and often indiscriminate crackdown by the Indian government in the 1980s against the movement for an independent Khalistan. While the cause has largely died down inside India, it continues to have supporters among some segments of the diaspora. The Indian government has accused Canada, and several other Western countries, of not doing enough to crack down on the separatists.

Analysts and former security officials said that in India’s immediate geographic neighborhood, RAW has often been willing to venture into murky spaces to recruit killers. Senior officials of Mr. Modi’s administration, including Ajit Doval, the storied former spymaster who now serves as his longtime national security adviser, have in the past been accused of reaching into the underworld to find hit men willing to go after targets both inside the country as well as abroad.

Mr. Bishnoi has demonstrated enormous power from behind bars, even giving a television interview from jail last year to pitch himself as a nationalist warrior rather than a criminal mastermind. That, one former security official said, was a signal of his trying to align himself with the spirit of nationalism for a potential deal.

“I am a nationalist,” Mr. Bishnoi said in that interview. “I am against Khalistan. I am against Pakistan.”

Ajai Sahni, a security analyst who runs the South Asia Terrorism Portal in New Delhi, said the exploitation of criminal gangs by spy agencies to carry out operations with deniability was something that “happens all over the world.”

“It is definitely possible for agencies like RAW to use gang rivalries instead of exposing their own covert operators,” Mr. Sahni added. “But just because that is generally how one would expect it to be done, it doesn’t necessarily mean we know this is exactly the case in Nijjar’s killing.”

The failed plot on American soil had some of the sloppy hallmarks of an agency trying to extend an old playbook into a different, unfamiliar space.

A U.S. indictment in November laid out evidence, including electronic communication and cash transactions between the hired hit man — who turned out to be an undercover cop — a boastful middleman, and an Indian intelligence handler whom The Washington Post recently identified as Vikram Yadav .

The Indian government’s response suggested worry: India’s top diplomat said the action was not government policy, while the government announced an investigation into the matter and promised cooperation with the United States.

Canada’s case has played out very differently. The country has not publicly disclosed any evidence backing up Mr. Trudeau’s claim, even as allied officials said in September that Canadian officials had found a “smoking gun”: intercepted communications of Indian diplomats in Canada indicating involvement in the plot.

Indian officials have pushed back against Mr. Trudeau’s claims with the kind of aggression that suggested it either wasn’t involved or that it was confident of its deniability.

The Indian government expelled Canadian diplomats , and doubled down by putting out a list of individuals on Canadian soil that it said were long wanted as part of what it described as a crime and terror nexus.

Last week, officials in Mr. Modi’s government jumped on scenes of an event that Mr. Trudeau had attended to say it showed his accusations were simply to appease what they say is a Sikh vote bank for him. They pointed to videos of an event where Mr. Trudeau was the chief guest and where chants of “long live Khalistan” were shouted. Mr. Trudeau, in his speech, said he will always be there “to protect your rights and your freedoms, and we will always defend your community against hatred.”

After the speech, the Indian foreign ministry summoned Canada’s second highest ranking diplomat in New Delhi to lodge a complaint.

“His remarks to us illustrates once again the kind of political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and people who practice violence,” Randhir Jaiswal, the foreign ministry spokesman, said at a news conference.
