CIMA Exam Structure in 2023

In this article, we explore the structure of the CIMA qualification for 2023 and provide you with information that will help you prepare for your exams.

Here we are again. Another year for you to achieve the management accounting qualification you’ve always wanted. 

CIMA affords thousands of students yearly the ability to achieve the most highly prized professional qualification in the world. And every student knows that sacrifices and careful planning are required.

‍ But where do you start?

In this article, we’ll make things easier for you by exploring the structure of the CIMA qualification for 2023 and providing you with information that will help you prepare for your exams.

How are the 2023 CIMA Exams Structured?

Quick Overview of CIMA Exams 

You will write 12 exams called Objective Tests plus 3 Case Study Exams.

Objective Tests

Each level has three objective tests. They are 90 minutes long , computer-based and can be taken any time during the year.  

Case Study Exams

Each case study exam is 3 hours long. They are computer-based and must be taken at specific times (February, May, August, November).

Certificate Level - Providing Introductory Principles of Accounting

Formally called CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting . This level is the formal entry route into the CIMA Professional Qualification.

Underpinning the foundational knowledge provided at this level is BA4 covering the fundamentals of ethics, corporate governance and business law.

The three objective tests are:

• BA1 - Fundamentals of Business Economics
• BA2 - Fundamentals of Management Accounting 
• BA3 - Fundamentals of Financial Accounting

The certificate level teaches core business and financial skills to those with no or limited accounting experience.

Operational Level - Providing Introductory Technical Skills

Consisting of 3 pillars - Enterprise, Performance and Financial. This level will provide you with technical skills in each pillar.

• ‍ Enterprise Pillar - Develops technical skills in risk management, financial strategy and financial management. ‍
• Performance Pillar - Develops technical skills in performance management, cost management and budgeting ‍
• Financial Pillar - Develops technical skills in advanced financial reporting and taxation
• E1 - Managing Finance in a Digital World
• P1 - Management Accounting 
• F1 - Financial Reporting

On completion of the objective tests and case study exam, you will be awarded the CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting.

Management Level - Providing Practical Management Skills 

The focus of this level is to equip you with practical skills allowing you to manage a team within a real-life context. 

• E2 - Managing Performance
• P2 - Advanced Management Accounting 
• F2 - Advanced Financial Reporting

On completion of the objective tests and case study exam, you will be awarded the CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting

Strategic Level - Providing Strategic Management Skills

The focus of this level is to equip you with high-level skills in team and organisational management. Managing strategic relationships at this level enables you to lead a company into a sustainable financial future.

• E3 - Strategic Management
• P3 - Risk Management
• F3 - Financial Strategy

Project and Relationship Management Skills are also covered on this level. 

On completion of the objective tests and strategic case study exam, you will be assessed on the practical requirements of the qualification. Then awarded CIMA Membership with the designation of CGMA.

CIMA Masters Gateway Exam - Fast Route to Strategic Level

If you have a graduate degree in Accounting, you may qualify to enter the qualification at Strategic Level. By passing the Masters Gateway Exam, you will receive permission to skip the lower levels of the qualification.

Permitted Exemptions

If you have an accounting qualification with a recognised provider in the UK, you may be eligible to receive credits for certain exams in the qualification. Scheduling Your CIMA Exam

Exams can be completed online at any time during 2023. In some countries, test centres are available. You can use the test centres if your laptop, computer or internet does not meet the system requirements for the online exam.  

Register with CIMA Global as a student to gain access to a MyCIMA Account. This student portal will allow you to schedule exams in your time zone. 

System Requirements

CIMA advises that you successfully test each requirement before scheduling an examination. The requirements are:

ID Requirements

CIMA requires valid (unexpired) government-issued original IDs. No photocopies will be accepted. The ID must include your name and a recent, high-quality photo. The first and last name on the ID must be the same as the name on the examination.

Acceptable forms of ID:

• International travel passport
• Driver's license
• Identification card (national, state or province ID card)
• Alien registration card (green card or permanent resident/visa)

CIMA Exam FAQs

- when can i schedule my objective test.

You can schedule objective tests up to 24 hours before you want to sit for the exam. You can pick any available slot but cannot reschedule or cancel your exam if you have less than 48 hours before the examination. 

For case study exams, you must check the exam schedule on CIMA Global, as these exams are scheduled four times a year in February, May, August, and November.

- Can I use a calculator, paper or a whiteboard during the exam?

Calculators from the approved list can be found on the CIMA Global website. Online functionality does not allow the use of erasable notes or whiteboards. However, the site does provide a whiteboard that allows you to enter numbers. 

- Will I be able to leave the exam session at any time?

If you leave your exam at any time, the invigilator will close your session, and you will not be able to return. Breaks are not given during the exam. 

- What other rules should I be aware of during the exam?

Mobile phones, headphones or headsets (wired or Bluetooth), handheld computers or other electronic devices, books, notes, notebooks, study guides, and food or tobacco products will not be allowed during the exam.

CIMA Exam dates. Objective and Case study exams

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is a world-renowned professional body that offers the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. To become a CGMA, candidates must pass all three CIMA Professional Qualification exams. In this blog post, we will list down the exam dates for all the three levels so that you can plan ahead.

There are a few differences in the options depending on what type of exam you're booking. 

Booking your CIMA objective test exam

For your objective test exams, you can book them on any date that suits you. You can take these anywhere from the beginning of January, all-inclusive, until November 30th each year!

Booking your case study exams

CIMA Exams are held four times a year. You will need to schedule your exams as per the table given below for Year 2023.

The exam windows take place in February, May, August, and November, with three possible dates per window.

If you cannot sit for an exam during one of the scheduled testing windows, you may be eligible to sit for an exception. Exception settings are offered on a case-by-case basis and require approval from CIMA. To request an exception sitting, log into mycima.cimaglobal.com and submit a Sitting Request form no later than 14 days before your desired exam date.

Closing comments

Registering for and scheduling your CIMA exams is a simple process. You can register for your Operational level exams as soon as you complete your CIMA registration. For the Management and Strategic levels, you must first complete the required work experience before you can sit for the exams.

CIMA Case Study Feb 2023: The Examiners Report

The February 2023 CIMA case study exams are just around the corner.

Students sitting a case study exam this month should be primed and (almost) ready for exam day! Your pre seen analysis is done, the industry analysis has been ticked off and you should have taken at least one mock exam by the stage.

So now is the ideal time to learn from other students mistakes as CIMA released The Examiners Report from the November case study sitting.

It’s a resource that goes under the radar, but you’d be a fool to over look it as CIMA are essentially giving you free advice on WHAT NOT TO DO on exam day!!

I’ve gone through the OCS, MCS and SCS examiners reports and picked out my key takeaways.

OCS: Fireworks Nov 22 Examiner Feedback

Significant number of candidates gave very poor answers, mainly due to;

• Lack of application to the scenario, leading to generic, text-book type answers.
• Lack of clarity and depth in explanations: a focus on identification rather than explanation.
• Candidates answering the task that they wish they had been asked rather than what had been asked or misreading the task given.
• Gaps in technical knowledge and understanding in some of the P1 and F1 areas, meaning that some tasks were answered well and others poorly.

MCS: Happy Playz Nov 22 Examiner Feedback

The examiner gave feedback around the quality of answers provided by students and stated that basic level 1 answers were summary of content from the syllabus with no real insight or application to the scenario, while at the other end of the spectrum, the advanced level 3 answers were evaluated and applied to the scenario with justification.

While another common pitfall was students not answering the requirement OR students were reluctant to commit themselves to solution/proposal in the fear of a “wrong” answer.

SCS: Hottayr Nov 22 Examiner Feedback

The SCS report was in a similar format to the MCS report, illustrating the differences between a weak (level 1) and strong (level 3) answer.

• Recalling syllabus content is helpful, BUT YOU MUST apply it to solving problems presented in the exam.
• There is no substitute to mock exam practice.
• If asked for a recommendation, you must justify it. Even if your recommendation is different from the examiner, you will still gain credit for the quality of the justification.
• Be sure to include real-world examples – low carbon products are discussed widely in the press, so it’s possible to research this easily before exam day.

Cima exam support and preparation, cima exam pass rates – november 2023.

CIMA’s latest pass rates have just been released and are currently available on its website. 

Operational level remains in the same 60% range from August 2023 (69%) to November 2023 (68%). The rates continue to give the impression that OCS students are preparing and handling the case study exams well.

Management level surged again from 58% in August 2023 to 65% in November 2023. The pass rates for Gateway are no longer reported separately, which seems to suggest that the pass rates are now included in the MCS level.

Strategic level improved from dipping below 50% in August 2023, now standing at 59% in November 2023.

New pass rates have been released for the Objective Test (OT). The current pass rates covered the period Nov 2022 to Nov 2023.

Despite the good performance shown in the pass rates, students must not become complacent about studying. Good results do not mean that the exams are any easier. I’d like to think that it’s more about students focusing and dedicating more towards their studies, thereby earning good marks for their exams.

What does it take to pass the CIMA exams in 2023?

We’ve been preparing students to pass the CIMA exams for over 20 years!

However, there have been a lot of changes in that time, including: + changes to the CIMA exams + changes to the CIMA syllabus + changes to the CIMA qualification format + changes to society and CIMA students themselves

With all this in mind we’ve been asking students about their experiences with the CIMA exams in 2023, to see what we can learn from them.

What are the trickiest exams?

Let’s start by looking at the exams that people have had the most difficulty with.

What exams have you passed?

The majority of students surveyed have failed at least one of their CIMA exams. However, there are some exams that students struggle with more than others. P1, P2, F2 and F3 seem to be particularly tricky, which has been the case for some years.

The operational case study also has a fairly high number of failures, however, with this being the first case study exam it’s perhaps not all too surprising that students struggle to adapt to this new format.

Objective test preparation

Let’s take a look at some of the stats from the objective test section of the 2023 survey…

How many weeks did you study ahead of your last OT exam?

There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all when it comes to creating a study schedule.

As you can see from the survey results above, exam preparations vary massively between students.

Typically, we’d recommend studying for anywhere between 4 and 7 weeks, for at least 10 hours per week, but this might not be possible for all students.

Ultimately, as long as the study time you have is spent effectively, and all of the content, and practice questions are covered well, your schedule will be unique to you.
